Palanpur: Close to 4,500 kg of red sanders worth Rs 2.5 crore, which was smuggled from Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, was seized in Hajipur village of Patan district on Friday. In a joint operation, teams of the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) of Andhra Pradesh and Patan police raided a godown near Hajipur village on Patan-Sidhpur highway where the smuggled stock was stored. The police arrested Uttamchand Soni of Deesa town in Banaskantha district, Hansraj Joshi of Mehsana, and Paresh Thakor of Patan, who illegally transported the red sanders from Tirupati district. The Patan police said the three accused acquired the red sandalwood logs from one Charamthe Venkat Raju of Mandapalli village nearly three months ago and brought them to Patan in a truck by concealing them under vegetables. The logs were from the Sundupalli-Sanipaya forest range in the southern state. KK Pandya, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Patan, told reporters that recently, an FIR was registered at Tirupati police station about red sandalwood theft, and the AP cops detained some suspects who revealed that it was transported to Patan. "Based on the information shared by the Task Force in Andhra Pradesh, we raided the godown today. Using human sources and technical surveillance, we narrowed down in the godown in Hajipur and caught three people along with 155 logs of red sanders," Pandya said. He said the primary interrogation of the accused revealed that they were preparing to further smuggle all 155 logs of red sanders to countries in South Asia and China where it is widely used for medicinal purposes. MD Sharif, Deputy SP, RSASTF, said, "We will seek the custody of the three accused from the court and take them to AP for further questioning." Red sanders or red sandalwood is an endangered species endemic to South India, especially AP. It is highly valued in international markets for its medicinal and ornamental properties. The Seminoles (6-1) won their third consecutive game and went 2-0 in the event as they pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 36 points. It's Florida State's best start since the 2019-20 season when it went 7-1. UMass (1-5) dropped its fifth in a row following a season-opening win over New Hampshire despite a strong game on Sunday from Jaylen Curry, who scored 17 points. Curry, with six free throws, helped propel the Minutemen on a 10-0 run over a four-plus minute span in the first half to take a 24-23 lead with 4:22 left. FSU closed the half on a 13-3 run to lead 37-27 at halftime. A 15-4 surge to open the second half helped the Seminoles break the game open. Florida State's defense frustrated UMass shooters throughout the contest, especially on the perimeter, limiting the Minutemen to 3-for-24 shooting (12.5 percent) from 3-point range and 18-for-58 (31 percent) overall. The Seminoles finished with 22 points off 17 UMass turnovers. On the flipside, Florida State had one of its best shooting games of the season. The Seminoles moved the ball well throughout the game and finished with 25 assists while only turning the ball over 10 times. The Seminoles shot 33 for 58 (57 percent) from the field and made 9 of 18 three-pointers to put together a season-high scoring output. Once again, Florida State shined thanks to its depth as 10 players scored and four scored in double figures. The Seminoles were able to have 16 players participate in the game as well. Jamir Watkins finished with 14 points while Jerry Deng and Justin Thomas each had 10 points. For UMass, Daniel Rivera finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Nate Guerengomba had 10 points. Finance Minister Siobhan Coady said affordability matters to the province. (Mark Quinn/CBC) Certain items on your holiday shopping list will be cheaper in Newfoundland and Labrador this December, after the provincial government announced Thursday that it will match the federal government's GST/HST tax break between Dec. 14 and Feb. 15. That means toys, children's clothes, Christmas trees, alcohol, and many grocery items will become tax-free across the province for two months. But NDP Leader Jim Dinn raised an eyebrow at the move after the legislature met Thursday. Last week, his party proposed removing the provincial portion of HST from home heating in the House of Assembly, and the province voted no. He said Finance Minister Siobhan Coady couldn't understand why the NDP would propose a policy that would also benefit the rich. Now, Dinn says the government is doing just that in its latest affordability measure. "The only explanation I can have is that there was an ethereal visitation last night, and to me, it smacks of hypocrisy, or they've got a very good sense of irony," Dinn told reporters on Thursday. He suspects an election is coming soon. Dinn said federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Sign proposed the federal government remove GST/HST on everyday essentials. Canada instead got a break. "You know, there must be an election coming when they start stealing NDP ideas," Dinn said. N.L. NDP Leader Jim Dinn said the NDP proposed a tax break on home heating in the House of Assembly last week. (Mark Quinn/CBC) N.L. PC Leader Tony Wakeham said the revenue lost through the upcoming tax break could have been better used elsewhere. "Instead of taking the HST or the GST off a bag of potato chips, why don't we take it off home heating fuel? Why didn't you take it off electricity rates?" he said. "Those things would really have an impact on people and help people all over Newfoundland and Labrador." Wakeham believes the federal government caught the province by surprise. He said they matched the tax break for political points ahead of a provincial election. "I think ... the premier found out about it yesterday," Wakeham said. "That's just an example of a government that's desperately trying to move up in the polls and get re-elected. "I think the people of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador see right through that." PC Leader Tony Wakeham said the province's decision to cut HST temporarily is more about politics than people. (Mark Quinn/CBC) Coady said the province will forego tens of millions of dollars in revenue by eliminating their proportion of HST when the tax break is active. Despite the loss, Coady said affordability matters. "Even though our economy is good, our employment is good, people are still finding the pinch in their pockets. [This] will help them in the next number of months," she said. The Department of Finance also anticipates the tax break will benefit businesses following the removal of HST and GST at restaurants. "Restaurants and prepared foods are included, helping busy families when they go about their day-to-day activities," Coady said. "I would hope that this also spurs on restaurants and fast food restaurants and restaurants downtown, restaurants throughout the province. Certainly, this would be helpful to them as well." People will be able to buy the following goods GST and HST free: Prepared foods, including vegetable trays, pre-made meals and salads, and sandwiches. Restaurant meals, whether dine-in, takeout or delivery. Snacks, including chips, candy and granola bars. Beer, wine, cider and pre-mixed alcoholic beverages below 7 per cent alcohol by volume (ABV). Children's clothing and footwear, car seats and diapers. Children's toys, such as board games, dolls and video game consoles. Books, print newspapers and puzzles for all ages. Christmas trees. "I'm hoping that people will get out there and take advantage of that," Coady said. Download our free CBC News app to sign up for push alerts for CBC Newfoundland and Labrador. Lara Trump will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as she considers a number of potential options with her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump , set to return to the White House. Among those possibilities is replacing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump tapped to be the next secretary of state. If Rubio is confirmed, his replacement — who would be chosen by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — would serve for two years until the next regularly scheduled election in 2026, at which point the seat would be up for election again. “It is something I would seriously consider,” Lara Trump told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.” Elected as RNC co-chair in March, Lara Trump was a key player in the Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a narrow House majority. What she does next could shape Republican politics, given her elevated political profile and her ties to the incoming president. The idea of placing a Trump family member in the Senate has been lauded in some Republican circles. Among the people pushing for her to replace Rubio is Maye Musk, mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk . “The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X. Lara Trump is 42. Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump on election night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, responded to his mother’s post: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.” Led by chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting roughly 230,000 volunteers and an army of lawyers for what it called its “election integrity” effort, four years after Donald Trump lost his reelection bid to Democrat Joe Biden, citing false or unproven theories about voter fraud. Outside groups such as Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took a greater responsibility for advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts. While Whatley will remain RNC chairman, Lara Trump said she felt she had accomplished her goals in the co-chair role. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.” President-elect Donald Trump endorsed RNC Treasurer KC Crosbie to replace Lara Trump as co-chair of the committee on Monday. “As Treasurer, she helped the RNC smash every fundraising record in History, and fortified our Party’s financial foundation. KC has been with me from the very beginning, helping REAL Republicans get elected across the Country, and would be a tremendous Co-Chair of the RNC!” President-elect Trump wrote on Truth Social. Lara Trump praised Musk’s new endeavor, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE , a nongovernmental task force headed by Musk and and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy . They’ve been tapped to fire federal workers , cut programs and slash federal regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term. “I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.” She said she expects a different presidency this time, beginning with the structure of the administration: While Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner served as White House advisers in his last administration, Lara Trump said she doesn’t see any family member taking any position in the White House this time around with her father-in-law. “He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years, and he’s out.” Lara Trump also says she expects the Republican Party to be more unified than it has ever been. When she became co-chair in May, the Trump campaign and the RNC merged, with staffers fired and positions restructured. She said the result could spell trouble for GOP lawmakers who do not agree with Trump’s agenda. “The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she said. “I think people are feeling a little more bold in coming out with their political views.” This story has been corrected to clarify that Rubio’s Senate seat would be filled until 2026 when an election would be held for the seat. Linderman reported from Baltimore and Mendoza from Santa Cruz, California.

The NFC’s No. 1 seed will come down to the final week when the Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings. The winner takes the NFC North and gets a first-round playoff bye and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl. The loser becomes the No. 5 seed and must play on the road in the wild-card round. The Vikings (14-2) held on for a 27-25 victory over the Green Bay Packers to set up the high-stakes showdown in Week 18. The Lions (13-2) visit the San Francisco 49ers (6-9) on Monday night in a rematch of the NFC title game. Win, lose or tie, they have to beat the Vikings again. Detroit beat Minnesota 31-29 in Week 7. The Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East and locked up the No. 2 seed with a 41-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. However, coach Nick Sirianni has a tough decision to make this week. Saquon Barkley is 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season record for yards rushing in a season. Sirianni has to decide whether to rest Barkley and most of his starters to prepare for the playoffs or let his star try for the 40-year-old record. The Los Angeles Rams (10-6) were on the verge of clinching the NFC West. They would lock it up Sunday night if the Commanders beat the Falcons. The outcome of the Atlanta-Washington game has a major impact on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7). If the Falcons win, they’d remain first in the NFC South and would win the division with a victory against Carolina next week. If the Falcons lose, the Buccaneers would take over first place and would secure the division with a victory over New Orleans next week. The Commanders would secure a wild-card spot with a win against Atlanta. If they lose, Seattle stays mathematically alive for a wild card and the Buccaneers could also find a path to the playoffs as a wild-card team. Three teams in the AFC have already secured their seeds. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (15-1) won the AFC West weeks ago and clinched the No. 1 seed. The AFC East champion Buffalo Bills (13-3) are the No. 2 seed. The AFC South champion Houston Texans (9-7) are the No. 4 seed. The Baltimore Ravens (11-5) would win the AFC North and get the No. 3 seed with a win or tie against Cleveland next weekend or a loss or tie by Pittsburgh, which hosts Cincinnati. If they don’t win the division, the Steelers have already clinched a wild-card berth. The Los Angeles Chargers (10-6) also secured a wild-card spot. They’ll be no lower than the sixth seed. The final AFC playoff spot comes down to the Broncos (9-7), Dolphins (8-8) or Bengals (8-8). Denver clinches with a win or tie against the Chiefs. The Dolphins need the Broncos to lose and they must beat the Jets on the road to get in. The Bengals must win and the Broncos and Dolphins have to lose for them to get in.
