CHICAGO (AP) — Cairo Santos had a field goal blocked — again. DeAndre Carter muffed a punt in the second half. And those were just the special teams mistakes for the struggling Chicago Bears. Santos' blocked field goal and Carter's turnover were part of another sloppy performance for Chicago in its fifth consecutive loss. The pair of miscues helped set up two of Minnesota's three touchdowns in a 30-27 overtime victory . The Bears (4-7) closed out a miserable three-game homestand after they won their first three games of the season at Soldier Field. They were in position to beat Green Bay last weekend before Santos' 46-yard field goal attempt was blocked on the final play of the Packers' 20-19 win . “It’s tough. ... When things just aren’t going your way, you gotta put your head down and just keep going to work,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “It’s not easy to do but that’s kind of where we’re at.” Chicago and Minnesota were tied at 7 when Caleb Williams threw incomplete on third-and-4 at the Vikings 30 early in the second quarter. The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. west of Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County, about 130 miles (209 km) from the Oregon border, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was felt as far south as San Francisco, some 270 miles (435 km) away, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds. It was followed by multiple smaller aftershocks. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury. The tsunami warning was in effect for roughly an hour. It was issued shortly after the temblor struck and covered nearly 500 miles (805 km) of coastline, from the edge of California’s Monterey Bay north into Oregon. “It was a strong quake, our building shook, we’re fine but I have a mess to clean up right now,” said Julie Kreitzer, owner of Golden Gait Mercantile, a store packed with food, wares and souvenirs that is a main attraction in Ferndale. “We lost a lot of stuff. It’s probably worse than two years ago. I have to go, I have to try and salvage something for the holidays because it’s going to be a tough year,” Kreitzer said before hanging up. The region — known for its redwood forests, scenic mountains and the three-county Emerald Triangle’s legendary marijuana crop — was struck by a 6.4 magnitude quake in 2022 that left thousands of people without power and water. The northwest corner of California is the most seismically active part of the state since it’s where three tectonic plates meet, seismologist Lucy Jones said on the social media platform BlueSky. Shortly after the quake, phones in Northern California buzzed with the tsunami warning from the National Weather Service that said: “A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now. Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.” South of San Francisco in Santa Cruz, authorities cleared the main beach, taping off entrances with police tape. Numerous cities urged people to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution, including Eureka. “I thought my axles had fallen apart,” said Valerie Starkey, a Del Norte County supervisor representing Crescent City, a town of fewer than 6,000 about 66 miles (106 km) north of Eureka. “That’s what I was feeling ... ‘My axles are broken now.’ I did not realize it was an earthquake.” Gov. Gavin Newsom said he has signed off on a state of emergency declaration to quickly move state resources to impacted areas along the coast. State officials were concerned about damages in the northern part of the state, Newsom said. The campus in was not in the tsunami hazard zone and after inspections, “all utilities and building systems are normal and operational,” the university said in a statement. Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said residents experienced some cracks in their homes’ foundations, as well as broken glass and windows, but nothing severe. There also have been no major infrastructure problems, building collapses or roadway issues, and no major injuries or deaths have been reported, he said. Honsal said he was in his office in the 75-year-old courthouse in downtown Eureka when he felt the quake. “We’re used to it. It is known as ‘earthquake country’ up here,” he said. “It wasn’t a sharp jolt. It was a slow roller, but significant.” Michael Luna, owner of a Grocery Outlet in Eureka, said that besides a few items falling off shelves, the store on Commercial Street was unscathed by the earthquake. “We didn’t have any issues but a couple of deodorants fall off.... Last week, the Private Schools’ Association JK arranged an interaction with some of the people’s representatives in the present government at the Conference Hall of the Institute of Hotel Management, Srinagar. For many, it might sound like a routine event that ends up with a news story in the local media or some sound bites in the social media. May be it is actually that, but there is another way of looking at it. It can become a part of a vibrant civil society dialogue over matters that really matter, and education is a priority area. In the room–conference hall– there were well-meaning people, all accomplished in their respective fields, and watching them face to face with people’s representatives, holding a candid conversation on the state of affairs related to the handling of private schools in J&K, was soothing to the eyes. A celebration of sorts To begin with, if there was one solid piece of education for all in the room, it was the value we can experience in the live interaction between the people’s representatives and the people who they represent. This interaction was something to be celebrated. And we all know why, at the moment, it is a celebration with a capital C. And that puts an extra burden on both, people and the people’s representatives. And that is to be truthful to each other. There might have been times for ‘privileges’ and ‘concessions,’ but that is certainly not there anymore. We should now develop the habit of building an argument and working in a normative, not to be confused with regulatory, atmosphere. The regulatory requirements are a small part of that normative framework; may be there are glaring contrasts between the two, at times. This normative framework is more about societal expectations and the very essence of the thing called e ducation . On either side we should identify the relevant questions and collaboratively find answers to them. Without each other, we will only be harming each other. It is in that spirit that I look at schools and the functions they render. Regulation, a faulty idea As an independent observer, I may agree with the things people associate with private schools, or I may disagree. But in the larger scheme of things, our approach to private schools is inadequate and mostly faulty. The idea of ‘strict control’ smacks of intoxication of power, whosever enjoys it, and at whatever level it is enjoyed in the bureaucracy. What is being projected as ‘Regulatory Requirement” and what are the actual requirements of a school to impart education-there is a huge mismatch. There is also a mismatch between the societal requirements of education and the way government may want us to run a school. A dialogue can happen only if people are allowed to talk, and those in the government have the will to listen. The regulatory framework should evolve from that dialogue, and not be imposed from the top with a humiliating disapproval of the larger societal mind. Organic, Autonomous, and Authentic When I was lining up my idea on this, my daughter, student of a private school, was singing this line with herself: ‘ Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader .’ If that is what education should aim at, we need to reconfigure our approach towards schools. Leaders are not born in an atmosphere of control, in an atmosphere of disrespect and limitations. Leaders are born in an organic, autonomous, and authentic space. Schools should be treated like that. The government and those who run the private schools should work collaboratively to ensure that schools become organic, autonomous, and authentic spaces. By reducing this lofty ideal of education to things like NoCs, fee fixation, and a strict adherence to the govt announcements on when to go for summer and winter vacation, we make a mockery of everything. One would love to see our schools as organic, autonomous and authentic spaces where teachers are respected and rewarded as they should be, where each service is adequately compensated, in monetary terms, and where those who run these schools are respected for their enterprising spirit. Build a realistic understanding If that has to be achieved, the government must simplify the processes, make the systems efficient, and build a realistic understanding around the concepts like Free Education , Charitable Trust and Not-for-Proft. In absence of that, our understanding of education and the private schools will always revolve around things like fee, with a ring of populism around it. Our fixation with the bathtub endangers the life of the baby in it, as we throw the baby out with the bathwater. Danger of control More we make it difficult to run a private school, we will see well meaning people, those who really work selflessly, leave this space. More we make it difficult, we will see enterprising people divert their energies and resources towards some other activity. And all this will only result in either our students leaving Kashmir to get quality education or remaining content with a downgraded form of education that will only waste their lives. Let’s pause and dispassionately think about it. A complaint here and there, about a private school here and there, should not guide our understanding about how to deal with private schools. It needs a visionary grasp of what education means, and an actual understanding of how institutions are run. You cannot squeeze such a vast territory within the noose of regulation. The government shouldn’t look at the private schools just through the prism of regulations, and the private schools also shouldn’t look back through the same prism. Make this discussion wider and focus on where the focus should be – education of our children. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. Starmer offers ‘plan for change’ in reset bid after 150 daysThe ongoing Canada Post strike has reached the three-week mark as the two sides continue to trade proposals through a government-appointed mediator. The work stoppage centres around a variety of issues, including disputes over wages and weekend delivery. Here’s a snapshot of the issues underpinning the standoff between the Crown corporation and union. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 55,000 Canada Post workers, said at the start of the strike that wage increases must be kept in line with inflation, with cost-of-living adjustment payments rolled into the basic wage rate. The union initially called for a cumulative wage hike of 24 per cent over four years. CUPW negotiator Jim Gallant said that figure has moved since the start of negotiations, but declined to comment on the union’s latest proposal. “We have just lived through the worst cost of living crisis in a generation,” the union’s national president Jan Simpson said in a post on Tuesday. Canada Post says it has offered what it calls “competitive” wage increases totalling 11.5 per cent over four years and more paid leave. It notes labour costs rose by $242 million in 2023, or about 6.5 per cent, compared with 2022. The organization declined to comment on Thursday. One of the main snags in negotiations has been a push to expand delivery to the weekend, but the two sides are at odds over how to staff the expansion. Canada Post has pitched seven-day-a-week delivery as a way to boost revenue and “secure the future of the company” as it struggles to compete with other delivery companies. The Crown corporation says it would staff weekend delivery shifts with a mix of new permanent part-time positions and some full-time, which would “create flexibility while not adding significant long-term fixed costs.” But the union characterizes Canada Post’s proposals as “attacks on full-time work,” accusing the Crown corporation of wanting to increase the part-time mix to more than 50 per cent of the workforce. It says it is concerned some part-timers could be scheduled for as few as eight hours per week and wouldn’t be eligible for benefits until they reach 1,000 hours. “Canada Post has every ability today to deliver parcels on the weekend, inside our collective agreement at straight time,” Gallant said in an interview. “We think it can be done with full-timers ... We’re just saying, ‘Instead of hiring 10 part-timers, you can hire three full time.” The union has highlighted a number of its demands for better job security, including a request for “improved protections against technological change.” Gallant said Canada Post is “always looking for new technology” that could threaten workers’ duties. “This loading and unloading of trucks by robots is one that they’re really, really looking at (and) forklifts that drive themselves through a plant,” he said. “We’re always afraid.” When it comes to retirement, CUPW says Canada Post wants new workers to accept a defined contribution pension plan, even though its defined benefit pension plan is overfunded by 140 per cent. “All workers deserve the right to retire with dignity, and for us, that means postal workers — present and future — maintain their defined benefit pension plan,” Simpson said. Canada Post says its proposals are “focused on protecting and enhancing what’s important to current employees ... while protecting the defined benefit pension and their job security.” The union has said it wants job security rights for rural and suburban mail carriers in line with those granted to urban postal workers. It has outlined a number of issues affecting its Rural Suburban Mail Carrier bargaining unit, saying it wants an hourly rate system with appropriate time values, union involvement and “safeguards against (Canada Post’s) unilateral change.” The union says Canada Post must maximize and maintain eight-hour routes for rural workers, grant improved rights for on-call relief employees, and uphold paid meal and rest period rights. It says the Crown corporation must also ensure the bargaining unit’s involvement in service expansion projects. Earlier this week, Simpson called on Canada Post to commit to working with the union “to expand services at the post office including postal banking and electric vehicle charging stations.” The union has demanded the full elimination of Canada Post’s “separate sort from delivery” system, which entails certain employees spending the entirety of their shifts sorting mail for letter carriers to go out and deliver — as opposed to carriers performing both tasks. It says this system overburdens carriers, who as a result spend more time outdoors and potentially exposed to extreme weather events. “Postal workers suffer the second highest rate of disabling injury among workers under federal jurisdiction, behind only the road transportation sector,” Simpson said. “Growing neighbourhood mail volumes and changing work methods like separate sort-from-delivery are only making things worse.” The union has also proposed increases to short-term disability program payments and injury on duty payments, along with more paid medical days. We triple-dog-dare you to find a better depiction of the holidays. When “A Christmas Story ” premiered in 1983, screenwriter Jean Shepherd pulled antidotes from his own life to create the Christmas comedy — including the infamous leg lamp. And Quentin Schultze, the author of “ You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out! Life Lessons from the Movie “A Christmas Story ,” taught storytelling with Shepherd, leading the pair to become fast friends. From their time together, Schultze gained a deeper insight into the holiday classic — and it turns out it was a rocky start for the late screenwriter, who died at 78 in 1999. “Jean Shepherd wrote scripts that he wanted done exactly the way he wrote them,” Schultze exclusively told The Post. “And I have a copy of [the] script the way he wrote it, and it’s almost twice as long as it needs to be for a 90-minute film. So, he was at constant loggerheads with the director, Bob Clark, over this.” The author continued, “So the stuff is getting cut, and Jean Shepherd is getting angrier and angrier about this and at the same time, at the shooting, Jean is going to the actors and telling them how to deliver their lines in tune with the parables.” Clark, who died in 2007 at age 67, had eventually had enough. “Finally, Bob Clark literally kicked him off the set,” Schultze shared. “He said, ‘You cannot be here anymore. I can’t make this film with you hanging around.’ That hurt Jean. But, Jean understood it because he was there telling the characters how to act, including Ralphie [played by Peter Billingsley].” There was also one scene in particular that got the axe. “I can think of a lot of the material that Bob Clark took out, both from the script and actually shooting scenes. Whole scenes that they shot that they took out. Including two more dream scenes,” Schultze revealed. Another interesting twist at the start of making “A Christmas Story” is that Jack Nicholson was originally supposed to be casted. “The studio wanted Nicholson to play the old man,” Schultze confessed. “And Nicholson was too expensive, this was not a high-budget film, and at the same time, both Jean Shepherd and the director Bob Clark, both of them said, ‘We don’t want Jack Nicholson anyway.'” And Schultze couldn’t help but agree. “I can’t think of Jack Nicholson having the kind of heartwarming yet curmudgeonly character,” he said. “Maybe he could, but Darren McGavin, it was perfect casting.” Although the studio said no more than 90 minutes and Clark had to give Shepherd the boot, the life lessons still shined brightly in the film. While writing his book about the Christmas classic, this stuck out to Schultze the most. “What surprised me the most was how well Shepherd was able to get in the meaning of each life lesson,” he reflected. “If you don’t just look at the movie and what’s happening and what the characters say, but if you pay attention to what the older Ralphie is saying, he gives away the lessons.” “That was the technique that Jean used because if you say, ‘Well, the meaning of this story is,’ it doesn’t quite work. So you want the story to work on the entertainment level but then to add the overview — line after line.” Regarding which lines stuck out to Schultze the most, he shared, “Jean has the line about the old man wanting to put the lamp in the window to turn on the neighborhood. “OK, well, it’s a double meaning. Obviously, you turn on the light. Turn on the neighborhood — that sexual connotation there is extremely important to understand that leg lamp as a trophy wife.” Shepherd was a master at interweaving themes into the script and characters from his own life. “The old man in the movie is not real warm and fuzzy with Ralphie,” Schultze emphasized. “He’s not cold, he’s not nasty, he’s not abusive, but he doesn’t call Ralphie by name, and he doesn’t do all kinds of things. He’s kind of distant.” He shared that this reflected someone in Shepherd’s childhood. “Jean said to me that, along with the leg lamp, he said, ‘Well Quinn, my old man abandoned us.’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Yeah, he was never around anyways,'” Schultze began. “He was always out with women, didn’t come home at night a lot of the time,” Schultze recalled Shepherd saying. “One day, the old man came home from work, and Jean watched while his dad started packing up his suitcase, and his dad said, ‘You’ll understand when you grow up, kid.’ Finishes packing up his suitcase, and Jean watches as his father goes down the front steps of the house and gets in a convertible with his secretary from work and leaves and never comes home. Jean never saw him again.” That is something that plays into the roles of the old man and Ralphie’s mom. “When you think about what can shape somebody’s view, for example, the difference between male and female,” Schultze mused, “and his mom had to raise him and take care of everything. I think that single event in his life shaped his view of what men are or can be like more than anything else.” And with a script written with that much emotion, it’s no surprise that “A Christmas Story” has stood the test of time. “If you go online and you look at most-watched movies and then you narrow it down by year, what you see is ‘A Christmas Story’ has gone up and up and up,” said Schultze. “Right now, the reports are that between the two cable channels alone that carry it 24 hours, it is up over 50 million American adults seeing it a year, and that’s continuing to go up.” “I got to know the screenwriter just before the movie came out,” Schultze reflected, “because I wanted to learn how to teach storytelling, and I had heard about him and heard some of his radio shows, and then the film came out, and it bombed at the box office.” “And I had all these notes from teaching with Shepherd, and I thought, ‘Someday, maybe I’ll write something about this because these parables, it’s these stories that have a deeper meaning.’ But I thought, ‘Nah, the movie’s never going to go anywhere.’ I thought it should but it bombed in the box office.” But, of course, running it 24 hours a day and the VCR stores stocking the film helped its success. “It’s all this charm,” Schultze told the Post. “It’s multi-genre, and it’s great characters.”Future-Proof Your Mobile: Best 5G Phones Under ₹20,000 in 2025
