Despite having spent the last four years in Government, the Green Party is potentially facing a total wipeout in the current election. You can keep up to date with all the General Election results throughout the weekend through Newstalk’s live blog and video stream. The party’s Deputy Leader, Senator Róisin Garvey, faces certain defeat in her Clare constituency, having received 6% of the vote. “Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael robbed everything we did,” she told Newstalk . “It's that simple – and look, traditionally, smallest parties get kicking, so we get a kicking – but I'm still really proud of what we achieved.” Senator Garvey said the Green Party had been ‘pigeonholed’, but believed they would ‘rise again’. "People like polarisations in media and in politics," she said. "You had the Healy-Rae's talking about the child of Prague, which is the complete opposite to what we're talking about - the reality of [climate change]. “When you ask people what is their problem with us, it's very hard for them to pinpoint what the problem is." “So, I think we just got blamed for things that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil didn't do, and Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil got credit for the things we did do.” However, Senator Garvey said her party’s time in Government had been ‘positive overall’. “I suppose maybe climate wasn't on the agenda or top of people's minds, but the Greens have always stood for that - and [there are] huge concerns around nature and flooding in [Clare] county," she said. “I just hope Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil look at what we achieved as a Green Party in the last four and a half years and continue our good work on public transport, retrofitting – none of those things existed before we entered Government.” Senator Garvey said she is going to 'go to bed early tonight' and sleep on her position in politics in Clare. Newstalk reporters will be at count centres around Ireland bringing you all the results as they come in. We will also be running election specials throughout today and tomorrow, and you can follow all the action on our live blog and on our social channels.A melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football. At the end of the day, some people got to learn how to lose, man. "You can't be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We had 60 minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting. Now people want to talk and fight. That's wrong. It's bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People got to be better." Once order was restored, officers cordoned the 50-yard line, using bicycles as barriers. Ohio State coach Ryan Day in his postgame press conference said he wasn't sure what happened. "I don't know all the details of it. But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't going to let that happen," he said. "I'll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we're embarrassed at the fact we lost the game, but there's some prideful guys on our team that weren't just going to let that happen." The Big Ten has not yet released a statement on the incident. --Field Level Media
Power Nickel Inc. (TSXV: PNPN) New 52-Week High's Amid Breakthrough Discoveries and Strategic Growth see more stocks inside....California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his decision to convene a special session of the state’s legislature to safeguard the state’s progressive economic and social policies. He said, “The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack, and we won’t sit idle.” Newsom’s decision reminds me of the USSR’s action to build a wall around East Berlin to ostensibly safeguard that bastion of liberty and prosperity from the evil forces of capitalism. And just as East Berliners found ways around the wall and ultimately to break it down, Californians are finding ways to leave the state in droves. Those California ex-pats are apparently more than willing to give up the “freedoms” that Newsom holds dear. The recent IRS report on “Gross Migration for Selected Income Items by State of Adjusted Gross Income” throws light on that issue. It presents a wealth of hard data based on actual federal taxpayer returns that pinpoint the migratory inflow and outflow of people for all 50 states. The 2022 report shows that the outflow of individuals from California to other states was 701,000, while the inflow was 398,000. California’s net outflow of 303,000 was the highest of all 50 states. It was followed by New York state with a net outflow of 221,000 and Illinois at 87,000. In addition to people flows, the IRS report includes the inflows and outflows of adjusted gross income (AGI) by state. So, it’s also possible to determine the impact of California’s net outflow of 303,000 people on AGI. For example, the average AGI for people leaving California was $134,000 versus a significantly lower $113,000 for those moving into the state. The migration of people with higher incomes leaving the state versus those moving out resulted in a net loss of $24 billion in California’s total AGI in 2022. That loss was the highest of any state. New York’s net loss of $14 billion was the second highest. Not coincidentally, the Tax Foundation’s ranking of state and local taxes placed California at second highest and New York at third. In sharp contrast, Florida’s gain of $36 billion in total AGI was the highest, followed by Texas at $10 billion. Both of these states have no state income tax. Kennedy, Jr. Commentary | Our seat at the table: Two Latina Republican lawmakers share their wisdom Commentary | Regulation could put working families’ jobs on the line and imperil our supply chain When the migratory flows of AGI for all 50 states are compared to the Tax Foundation’s tax ranking, a clear pattern emerges. The ten states that ranked lowest in taxes (1-10) experienced a net increase in total AGI of $48 billion; the next ten (11-20) added $13 billion; the next ten (21-30) added $1 billion; the next ten (31-40) lost $11 billion; while the states that ranked highest in taxes lost $49 billion. Note that the loss in total AGI for the ten states that ranked highest in taxes was almost the same as the gain in total AGI for the states with the lowest state taxes. Even worse for California’s economic future is that the largest percentage of the state’s net outflow in 2022 of 303,000 is in the 35 under 45 age cohort. That represents 90,000 or 30% of the net outflow. The 2022 IRS AGI report is not an anomaly. California experienced net losses in AGI every year between 2017 to 2022. Those losses total almost $100 billion. What should be particularly alarming to Newsom and his super majority of Democrats in the legislature is that these annual losses are cumulative. That is, the net outflow of AGI in one year continues on to the next and beyond. So, as Newsom calls for a special legislative session to figure out how to protect Californians from losing their freedoms, taxpayers are voting with their feet by leaving Newsom’s much-ballyhooed inner sanctum and uprooting their families and taking their earning power with them. Strachan urged both Rashford and United to make a definitive decision regarding the forward’s future, urging the 27-year-old to either fully commit to his role or explore opportunities elsewhere, thereby allowing the club to move forward. Speaking to , Strachan remarked: “Well, that’s one of the problems that Man United have – we’ve just got to hold our breath for Marcus Rashford to play well. “And we’ve just got to go through this again every season where we’ve got to hope Marcus gets better. ‘I hope he starts smiling and I hope he starts enjoying the game.’ Do me a favour. If you don’t enjoy it at the club, leave. Just leave and then we can all get on with it. You’re a good footballer, son. “As Man United fans, do you want to just keep waiting for Marcus to do well? I think that conversation should be moved on now and just put away. You either want to play or you don’t want to play. Do me a favour, if you’re not enjoying it, do something else then.” These comments come despite Rashford showing signs of improvement since Amorim’s arrival. Under the new manager, the forward has netted three goals in his last five games, offering a glimpse of his potential to thrive in the revamped system. For the season, Rashford has tallied seven goals and three assists in 23 appearances across all competitions—a respectable return, albeit not at the elite level expected of him. Having renewed his contract last year, Rashford is tied to United until the summer of 2028. As an academy graduate and a player who has been integral to the club over the years, his future continues to be a key talking point among fans and analysts. Amorim’s revamped approach seems to suit Rashford’s strengths, but the lingering question remains: can he sustain this form and deliver consistently? Rashford’s performances in the months ahead will likely determine whether he remains central to Amorim’s vision for United or embarks on a new chapter in his career. It has been recently reported that the club will be keen on cashing in on him, due to his declining stock. , the 27-year-old’s value is now as low as £40m, a figure they say United would gladly accept to get the player off their books.
CLEVELAND — With snow falling, Nick Chubb plowed forward. On a play that looked eerily similar to the one in Pittsburgh last year that threatened to end his career, Chubb kept his legs moving and pushed his way into the end zone for a touchdown he and his teammates won't forget. Chubb ran for a 2-yard touchdown w ith 57 seconds left, and the Cleveland Browns stunned one of their division rivals on Thursday night, beating the Steelers 24-19 and ending their five-game winning streak. Chubb's score came in his first game against the AFC North-leading Steelers (8-3) since the running back sustained a season-ending left knee injury in Week 2 last September in a Monday night game against the Steelers. Chubb, who had injured the same knee while playing at Georiga in 2015, had to endure grueling rehab sessions to make it back on the field, and the sight of him scoring against the dreaded Steelers was almost poetic. “It meant a lot to me. I know it means a lot to him,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks. “He won’t say it, but it’s true. I’ll say it because this time last year we were sick to our stomachs. There was just so much in the air, so for him to come back and be pivotal in this game just speaks to the kind of resilience and the man that he is. "We absolutely love him.” Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (24) carries for a touchdown in the second half of an NFL football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, in Cleveland. Credit: AP/Sue Ogrocki Chubb also scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. The Browns (3-8) had blown a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter and were down 19-18 before getting the ball back with 3:22 remaining after Pittsburgh punter Corliss Waitman shanked a 16-yarder. With snow piling up and covering the yard lines on the field, Cleveland's Jameis Winston c ompleted a third-down pass to Jerry Jeudy to the Pittsburgh 9. Two plays later, Chubb barreled into the end zone. Chubb did not speak to the media afterward, but his teammates were overjoyed and couldn't wait to share his story. Credit: AP/Sue Ogrocki “I'm his No. 1 fan when he's out there," Browns running back Jerome Ford said. “If I could, I would start the ‘Chubb’ chant every time he steps on the field.” The Steelers had one last chance, but Russell Wilson's Hail Mary on the final play was knocked down by Browns safety Grant Delpit in the end zone, touching off a wild celebration at Huntington Bank Field. Amid a disastrous season, beating the Steelers eased pressure on coach Kevin Stefanski and gave Cleveland fans something to savor. “Our guys love playing under the lights," Stefanski said. "They love playing in front of these fans. Add the snow element, it was pretty cool." With early snow flurries giving way to blizzard-like conditions in the fourth quarter that blanketed the field in white — Amazon Prime Video used graphics on its telecast to show the otherwise invisible numbers and hash marks — the Steelers quickly erased an 18-6 deficit, scoring two touchdowns in just over a minute. Wilson’s 23-yard TD pass to Calvin Austin III with 6:15 left put Pittsburgh ahead by one. Nick Herbig's strip-sack of Winston set up the go-ahead score and put the Steelers in position to win their sixth straight and open a two-game lead in the AFC North over Baltimore. However, the Browns responded and pulled off their second divisional win after beating the Ravens last month. “We should’ve won that game,” Wilson said. “We felt like we battled in a tough environment. The way we answered in the fourth quarter was pretty special and we had a chance at the end, too.” Jaylen Warren scored on a 3-yard run midway through the fourth to pull the Steelers to 18-13. Then, as always seems to be the case, Pittsburgh’s defense came up with the big play as Herbig got to Winston and safety DeShon Elliott recovered the fumble. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt — like he planned. Garrett dominated the first half, sacking Wilson and putting constant pressure on the Steelers’ QB. The performance came during a week in which the Browns star commented about Watt’s seeming slight when Garrett was named Defensive Player of the Year over him last season. “I wanted to make it known that I’m the guy, I’m No. 1 as an edge defender. That was a statement I was intending to make and I think I made.” Garrett set up Cleveland’s second score with a strip-sack of Wilson. As he was being blocked, Garrett popped the ball from Wilson’s grip and linebacker Winston Reid recovered. The Browns drove to the 16 and settled for a 34-yard field from Dustin Hopkins, who missed two kicks weeks a week ago in a loss at New Orleans. Chubb’s TD dive in the second quarter capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive by the Browns, who gained just 19 yards and had two three-and-outs in the first quarter. The Steelers drove inside Browns territory on their first three possessions, but came away with just three points. Chris Boswell, who made six field goals last Sunday for all of Pittsburgh’s points in a win over Baltimore, missed a 58-yard field goal in the first quarter while the field was still in good shape. It was only his second miss in 31 attempts this season. Injuries Steelers: WR Van Jefferson (quadriceps) left briefly in the first half but returned. ... NoneTheir ages vary. But a conspicuous handful of filmmaking lions in winter, or let’s say late autumn, have given us new reasons to be grateful for their work over the decades — even for the work that didn’t quite work. Which, yes, sounds like ingratitude. But do we even want more conventional or better-behaved work from talents such as Francis Ford Coppola? Even if we’re talking about “Megalopolis” ? If Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” gave audiences a less morally complicated courtroom drama, would that have mattered, given Warner Bros.’ butt-headed decision to plop it in less than three dozen movie theaters in the U.S.? Coppola is 85. Eastwood is 94. Paul Schrader, whose latest film “Oh, Canada” arrives this week and is well worth seeking out, is a mere 78. Based on the 2021 Russell Banks novel “Foregone,” “Oh, Canada” is the story of a documentary filmmaker, played by Richard Gere, being interviewed near the end of his cancer-shrouded final days. In the Montreal home he shares with his wife and creative partner, played by Uma Thurman, he consents to the interview by two former students of his. Gere’s character, Leonard Fife, has no little contempt for these two, whom he calls “Mr. and Mrs. Ken Burns of Canada” with subtle disdain. As we learn over the artful dodges and layers of past and present, events imagined and/or real, Fife treats the interview as a final confession from a guarded and deceptive soul. He’s also a hero to everyone in the room, famous for his anti-Vietnam war political activism, and for the Frederick Wiseman-like inflection of his own films’ interview techniques. The real-life filmmaker name-checked in “Oh, Canada” is documentarian Errol Morris, whose straight-to-the-lens framing of interview subjects was made possible by his Interrotron device. In Schrader’s adaptation, Fife doesn’t want the nominal director (Michael Imperioli, a nicely finessed embodiment of a second-rate talent with first-rate airs) in his eyeline. Rather, as he struggles with hazy, self-incriminating memories of affairs, marriages, one-offs with a friend’s wife and a tense, brief reunion with the son he never knew, Fife wants only his wife, Emma — his former Goddard College student — in this metaphoric confessional. Schrader and his editor Benjamin Rodriguez Jr. treat the memories as on-screen flashbacks spanning from 1968 to 2023. At times, Gere and Thurman appear as their decades-young selves, without any attempt to de-age them, digitally or otherwise. (Thank god, I kind of hate that stuff in any circumstance.) In other sequences from Fife’s past, Jacob Elordi portrays Fife, with sly and convincing behavioral details linking his performance to Gere’s persona. We hear frequent voiceovers spoken by Gere about having ruined his life by age 24, at least spiritually or morally. Banks’ novel is no less devoted to a dying man’s addled but ardent attempt to come clean and own up to what has terrified him the most in the mess and joy of living: Honesty. Love. Commitment. There are elements of “Oh, Canada” that soften Banks’ conception of Fife, from the parentage of Fife’s abandoned son to the specific qualities of Gere’s performance. It has been 44 years since Gere teamed with Schrader on “American Gigolo,” a movie made by a very different filmmaker with very different preoccupations of hetero male hollowness. It’s also clearly the same director at work, I think. And Gere remains a unique camera object, with a stunning mastery of filling a close-up with an unblinking stillness conveying feelings easier left behind. The musical score is pretty watery, and with Schrader you always get a few lines of tortured rhetoric interrupting the good stuff. In the end, “Oh, Canada” has an extraordinarily simple idea at its core: That of a man with a movie camera, most of his life, now on the other side of the lens. Not easy. “I can’t tell the truth unless that camera’s on!” he barks at one point. I don’t think the line from the novel made it into Schrader’s script, but it too sums up this lion-in-winter feeling of truth without triumphal Hollywood catharsis. The interview, Banks wrote, is one’s man’s “last chance to stop lying.” It’s also a “final prayer,” dramatized by the Calvinist-to-the-bone filmmaker who made sure to include that phrase in his latest devotion to final prayers and missions of redemption. “Oh, Canada” — 3 stars (out of 4) No MPA rating (some language and sexual material) Running time: 1:34 How to watch: Opens in theaters Dec. 13, running 1in Chicago Dec. 13-19 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. By JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Tuesday he was “stupid” not to put his own name on pandemic relief checks in 2021, noting that Donald Trump had done so in 2020 and likely got credit for helping people out through this simple, effective act of branding. Biden did the second-guessing as he delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution defending his economic record and challenging Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month. As Biden focused on his legacy with his term ending, he suggested Trump should keep the Democrats’ momentum going and ignore the policies of his allies. The president laid out favorable recent economic data but acknowledged his rare public regret that he had not been more self-promotional in advertising the financial support provided by his administration as the country emerged from the pandemic. “I signed the American Rescue Plan, the most significant economic recovery package in our history, and also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said at the Washington-based think tank. “He signed checks for people for 7,400 bucks ... and I didn’t. Stupid.” The decision by the former reality TV star and real estate developer to add his name to the checks sent by the U.S. Treasury to millions of Americans struggling during the coronavirus marked the first time a president’s name appeared on any IRS payments. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris , who replaced him as the Democratic nominee , largely failed to convince the American public of the strength of the economy. The addition of 16 million jobs, funding for infrastructure, new factories and investments in renewable energy were not enough to overcome public exhaustion over inflation, which spiked in 2022 and left many households coping with elevated grocery, gasoline and housing costs. More than 6 in 10 voters in November’s election described the economy as “poor” or “not so good,” according to AP VoteCast, an extensive survey of the electorate. Trump won nearly 7 in 10 of the voters who felt the economy was in bad shape, paving the way for a second term as president after his 2020 loss to Biden. Biden used his speech to argue that Trump was inheriting a strong economy that is the envy of the world. The inflation rate fell without a recession that many economists had viewed as inevitable, while the unemployment rate is a healthy 4.2% and applications to start new businesses are at record levels. Biden called the numbers under his watch “a new set of benchmarks to measure against the next four years.” “President-elect Trump is receiving the strongest economy in modern history,” said Biden, who warned that Trump’s planned tax cuts could lead to massive deficits or deep spending cuts. He also said that Trump’s promise of broad tariffs on foreign imports would be a mistake, part of a broader push Tuesday by the administration to warn against Trump’s threatened action. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also issued a word of caution about them at a summit of The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council. “I think the imposition of broad based tariffs, at least of the type that have been discussed, almost all economists agree this would raise prices on American consumers,” she said. Biden was also critical of Trump allies who have pushed Project 2025 , a policy blueprint from the Heritage Foundation that calls for a complete overhaul of the federal government. Trump has disavowed participation in it, though parts were written by his allies and overlap with his stated views on economics, immigration, education policy and civil rights. “I pray to God the president-elect throws away Project 2025,” Biden said. “I think it would be an economic disaster.” Associated Press writer Fatima Hussein in Washington contributed to this report.CHARLESTON, S.C. , Dec. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Blackbaud (NASDAQ: BLKB), the leading provider of software for powering social impact, today filed a Form 8-K with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stating that the Company concluded a material pre-tax noncash impairment charge, which may be up to approximately $415 million , is required for its EVERFI asset group and will be recorded during the fourth quarter of 2024.
