Tech billionaire Elon Musk spent at least $270 million to help Donald Trump win the US presidency, according to new federal filings, making him the country's biggest political donor. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Musk, the world's richest person, was an ardent supporter of Trump's White House campaign -- funneling money into door knocking operations and speaking at his rallies. His financial backing, which has earned him a cost-cutting advisory role in Trump's incoming government, surpassed spending by any single political donor since at least 2010, according to data from nonprofit OpenSecrets. The Washington Post reported that Musk spent more this election cycle than Trump backer Tim Mellon, who gave nearly $200 million and was previously the Republican's top donor. Musk donated $238 million to America PAC, a political action committee that he founded to support Trump, filings late Thursday with the Federal Election Commission showed. An additional $20 million went to the RBG PAC, a group that used advertising to soften Trump's hardline reputation on the key voter issue of abortion. Musk has been an ever-present sidekick for Trump since his election victory in November, inviting him to watch a rocket launch in Texas by his SpaceX company. Meanwhile, billionaire astronaut Jared Isaacman, who has collaborated with Musk's SpaceX, was named the head of US space agency NASA. pgf-bjt/acbBRAINERD — Alleged conflicts of interest and continued heated discussions about funding of the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport played into budget talks at the city of Brainerd on Monday, Dec. 2. Council members voted 6-1 to review a proposed 2% levy increase at the next meeting on Dec. 16, when they are expected to approve the final 2025 budget and property tax levy. Kara Terry was the sole vote against that proposal, saying she could not support a budget with only $1,000 dedicated to the airport’s levy and describing current discussion between the county and the city as a “pissing” contest. The decision for that levy came on Sept. 16, when the City Council set the preliminary 2025 property levy at an 8% increase over this year, with the goal of decreasing the final number before the December approval. Terry was absent during the meeting, leading to a split 3-3 vote to set the airport levy at $150,000. That tie was broken by Mayor Dave Badeaux, who was opposed. A subsequent motion to approve a $1,000 levy for the airport passed 5-1, with Tiffany Stenglein as the sole no vote. ADVERTISEMENT Further discussion on the airport levy took place in November, when the city’s Personnel and Finance Committee recommended setting the airport levy at $125,000, but that motion failed 5-2, with Terry and Stenglein opposed. The proposed levy, then, stayed at $1,000. The airport levy issue is ongoing and one council member, Jeff Czeczok, has spoken about it several times, stating the residents of Brainerd are double taxed for the airport because they pay into both city and county airport levies. The airport is jointly owned by Brainerd and Crow Wing County, and both entities levy funds for its operations. In November 2023, the Crow Wing County Board agreed to increase its airport levy by 6%, which represents Brainerd’s share of the county’s tax base, while the city decreased its airport levy by the same amount to offset the cost. That 6% amounted to $9,420, leaving the city’s 2024 airport levy at $146,080. In May 2024, the council voted to establish a work group to discuss the future of airport funding and operations with county staff and officials. One of the ideas from the council was the county assuming sole ownership, which would get rid of the need for the city to levy for the airport. According to City Attorney Joe Langel, the joint powers agreement between the city and county stating both entities should levy for the airport is unclear on how the levy needs to be split up. An email from County Administrator Deborah Erickson in August stated the county was not interested in any ownership changes at the airport and would not entertain any such requests from the city. County Commissioner Steve Barrows told the Dispatch in November the county was willing to talk about ownership, but it was too late in the game for the 2025 budget. After Monday’s budget discussion, Terry said she had several points she wanted to make, starting with the idea of double taxation on Brainerd residents for the airport. That, she said, is not happening, as double taxation would mean the county and city are each taking $1 of taxes from residents for the airport. “While the city is taxing its residents, let’s say, $1 for example, the county is taking approximately 6% of that dollar,” Terry said. “... So technically, it’s not double taxation. Is it right? No. Is it double taxation? No. Is it something that should be remedied? Yes.” While last year’s scenario of the county increasing its airport levy by 6% might not have been the perfect solution, Terry said it showed a good faith effort by the county to help with the issue. As the community services director for Crow Wing County, Terry said she is aware of the county’s budgeting process, which begins in March and lasts throughout the year. The council’s discussion about the airport levy, she said, came in the last minutes of the budget session and was not fair to the County Board, nor is the low levy fair to airport employees. ADVERTISEMENT “With the pissing contest — and yes I did use that word — we’re in now with the County Board and the $1,000 allocation to the airport, what message do you think that that sends to our airport staff who are now questioning the funding of their employment?” Terry said. “How much confidence does that give to those staff who work hard to ensure we have a fully functioning airport? Let me tell you, it doesn’t make them feel secure or like their work matters, especially this late in the budget season.”The last issue Terry brought up was the idea that she has a conflict of interest on certain council matters because she works for the county. She went back to Mayor Badeaux’s accusation of a conflict of interest on her part when the council discussed homelessness and a camping ban in July. At that time, Terry spoke about her experience at the county being valuable in dealing with certain city issues and insisted there was no issue with her correspondence with city staff through her county email, as Badeaux alleged, as her city email is all routed to her county address. Now, Terry said it was brought to her attention there are worries of her being influenced by the county in her vote on the airport levy. “God forbid that I would have my own mind, my thoughts, my beliefs, the data, the community input to make my own decisions on this issue,” she said. “But also, I have integrity, and I would not be influenced to vote for something I don’t agree with.”She went on to say County Administrator Erickson and County Board members also have integrity and would not ask her to do that. “I find this conflict of interest thing to be quite entertaining and interesting, as I have been the only one questioned on my conflicts of interest when we have sitting council members who own small businesses within the city, and no one has questioned their ability to make recommendations or to vote on anything having to do with small businesses,” Terry said. She wrapped up her comments by saying she was not in favor of a $1,000 levy for the airport and, while the issue needs to be solved, urged the council to take a more planful approach and have a more thoughtful discussion on the matter next year. Since setting the preliminary levy, several changes have impacted the budget. During a meeting Nov. 18, the council agreed to reduce the capital levy by $100,000 for future park capital items. Finance Director Connie Hillman told council members at their Monday, Dec. 2, meeting of decreases to the city’s estimated insurance rates. The city budgeted a projected increase of 5% for workers’ compensation insurance renewal rates, but that rate ended up being much lower, decreasing the working funds budget by $135,200. The League also suggested an increase in rates for property, liability, auto and equipment insurance, though the actual rates lowered the budget by about $27,000. The most recent budget projections show an increase of $513,884 in personnel services, largely due to contracts that were settled and employees moving through the city’s wage scale. Decreases to the debt levy, capital levy and airport levy, however, come close to offsetting much of the needed levy increase, Hillman said, meaning the city would only need to set its levy at $6,984,745 — or a 0.37% increase over 2024 — for a perfectly balanced budget. Included in that budget, though, is the use of $113,188 in the city’s fund balance to offset the levy. That money was levied for the 2024 budget, as the council was unsure of the cost of a rate study, but it was not used. Hillman said the council could elect to keep that money in the fund balance, knowing the city was not in compliance with its fund balance policy at the end of 2023, and then raise the levy by 2%. A final option to set the levy at an increase of up to 4%, Hillman said, could result in increases in the capital levy, permanent improvement levy and the fund balance. The last option would also result in a more steady levy increase instead of peaks and valleys from year to year. The same reductions are not promised next year to offset the increasing costs of personnel services, Hillman said. With the council’s direction, Hillman will prepare a budget presentation with a 2% levy increase for the next meeting on Dec. 16, when the council is expected to approve the final budget and levy. NEW YORK — “Barbenheimer” was a phenomenon impossible to manufacture. But, more than a year later, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to make “Glicked” — or even “Babyratu” — happen. The counterprogramming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in July 2023 hit a nerve culturally and had the receipts to back it up. Unlike so many things that begin as memes, it transcended its online beginnings. Instead of an either-or, the two movies ultimately complemented and boosted one another at the box office. And ever since, moviegoers, marketers and meme makers have been trying to recreate that moment, searching the movie release schedule for odd mashups and sending candidates off into the social media void. Most attempts have fizzled (sorry, “Saw Patrol” ). This weekend is perhaps the closest approximation yet as the Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” opens Friday against the chest-thumping sword-and-sandals epic “Gladiator II.” Two big studio releases (Universal and Paramount), with one-name titles, opposite tones and aesthetics and big blockbuster energy — it was already halfway there before the name game began: “Wickiator,” “Wadiator,” “Gladwick” and even the eyebrow raising “Gladicked” have all been suggested. “'Glicked' rolls off the tongue a little bit more,” actor Fred Hechinger said at the New York screening of “Gladiator II” this week. “I think we should all band around ‘Glicked.’ It gets too confusing if you have four or five different names for it.” As with “Barbenheimer," as reductive as it might seem, “Glicked” also has the male/female divide that make the fan art extra silly. One is pink and bright and awash in sparkles, tulle, Broadway bangers and brand tie-ins; The other is all sweat and sand, blood and bulging muscles. Both films topped Fandango’s most anticipated holiday movie survey, where 65% of respondents said that they were interested in the “Glicked” double feature. Theaters big and small are also pulling out the stops with movie-themed tie-ins. B&B Theaters will have Roman guards tearing tickets at some locations and Maximus popcorn tubs. Marcus Theaters is doing Oz photo ops and friendship bracelet-making. Alamo Drafthouse is leaning into the singalong aspect (beware, though, not all theaters are embracing this) and the punny drinks like “Defying Gravi-Tea.” “Rather than it being in competition, I think they’re in conversation,” “Gladiator II” star Paul Mescal said. “This industry needs a shot in the arm. Those films gave it last year. We hope to do it this year.” And the hope is that audiences will flock to theaters to be part of this moment as well. It's a sorely needed influx of could-be blockbusters into a marketplace that's still at an 11% deficit from last year and down 27.2% from 2019, according to data from Comscore. “Competition is good for the marketplace. It’s good for consumers,” said Michael O'Leary, the president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. “Having two great movies coming out at the same time is simply a multiplier effect.” “Glicked” is currently tracking for a combined North American debut in the $165 million range, with “Wicked” forecast to earn around $100 million (up from the $80 million estimates a few weeks ago) and “Gladiator II” pegged for the $65 million range. “Barbenheimer” shattered its projections last July. Going into that weekend, “Barbie” had been pegged for $90 million and “Oppenheimer” around $40 million. Ultimately, they brought in a combined $244 million in that first outing, and nearly $2.4 billion by the end of their runs. It’s possible “Glicked” will exceed expectations, too. And it has the advantage of another behemoth coming close behind: “Moana 2,” which opens just five days later on the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday. “Glickedana” triple feature anyone? “These are 10 important days,” O'Leary said. “It’s going to show the moviegoing audience that there’s a lot of compelling stuff out there for them to see.” There are infinite caveats to the imperfect comparison to “Barbenheimer,” as well. “Wicked” is a “Part One.” Musicals carry their own baggage with moviegoers, even those based on wildly successful productions (ahem, “Cats”). “Gladiator II” got a head start and opened internationally last weekend. In fact, in the U.K. it played alongside “Paddington in Peru,” where that double was pegged “Gladdington.” “Gladiator” reviews, while positive, are a little more divided than the others. And neither directors Ridley Scott nor Jon M. Chu has the built-in box office cache that Christopher Nolan’s name alone carries at the moment. The new films also cost more than “Barbie” ($145 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($100 million). According to reports, “Gladiator II” had a $250 million price tag; “Wicked” reportedly cost $150 million to produce (and that does not include the cost of the second film, due next year). The narrative, though, has shifted away from “who will win the weekend.” Earlier this year, Chu told The Associated Press that he loves that this is a moment where “we can root for all movies all the time.” Close behind are a bevy of Christmas releases with double feature potential, but those feel a little more niche. There’s the remake of “Nosferatu,” the Nicole Kidman kink pic “Babygirl” and the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.” The internet can’t even seem to decide on its angle for that batch of contenders, and none exactly screams blockbuster. Sometimes the joy is just in the game, however. Some are sticking with the one-name mashup (“Babyratu”); others are suggesting that the fact that two of the movies feature real-life exes (Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp) is enough reason for a double feature. And getting people talking is half the battle. Umanmielen, who spent three years at Florida before transferring to Ole Miss, left the stadium with a number of officers surrounding him. And the defensive end still tried to get at heckling fans. Recommended Videos It started when Umanmielen left the sideline in the waning seconds of a 24-17 loss to the Gators . He was walking toward the visiting locker room when at least one fan yelled at him from the stands. Umanmielen clearly didn't like what he heard and made his way toward the seats. Officers quickly stepped in and escorted Umanmielen back toward the locker room. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. It was the latest bit of oddness for Umanmielen, who wore an orange Gators ski mask through Ole Miss' practice facility late in the week. Patiala: A day after he survived an assassination attempt at the entrance of Golden Temple in Amritsar, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday performed “sewa” (service) at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib town of Ropar district amid tight security. Policemen in plainclothes formed a protective ring around the former deputy chief minister as he arrived at the shrine to serve the religious punishment decreed by the Akal Takht , the temporal body of Sikhs, for “mistakes” committed by Akali Dal and its govt in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. Seated in a wheelchair with a placard around his neck and a spear in his hand, he performed the duty of “sewadar” at the main entrance for an hour. He then listened to “Gurbani Kirtan” for another hour and proceeded to the langar hall to wash used utensils as part of his service. Punjab Police made a three-layered security arrangement, including the deployment of two SP-ranked officers, for the former deputy chief minister, who is under Z-level protection. Police confirmed that foolproof security arrangements had been made. Sukhbir’s wife and MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and his son Anantbir Singh Badal also reached Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib. At the same time, SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia, Sucha Singh Langah and Daljit Singh Cheema too performed “sewa”, in compliance with the orders of the Akal Takht.
