( MENAFN - The Rio Times) The London stock exchange faces its most significant challenge since the 2009 financial crisis. In 2024, 88 companies abandoned the British market, with only 18 new listings to offset the losses. This exodus represents £94 billion in market value leaving the exchange, with £84 ($67) billion from FTSE 350 companies alone. High-profile departures include Ashtead Group, Flutter Entertainment, and CRH, with a combined market capitalization exceeding £100 ($80) billion. These companies chose to relocate to the New York Stock Exchange, citing better valuations and a deeper investor pool. The exodus began in 2022 when BHP, a mining giant worth $125 billion, shifted its primary listing to Sydney. While some argued this move reflected BHP's Australian-centric operations, others saw it as a sign of London's declining influence. The reasons for this shift are multifaceted. UK-listed companies often trade at a discount compared to their US counterparts. The FTSE 100 rose only 7.5% in 2024, while the S&P 500 surged 27.5%. Brexit's impact lingers, creating regulatory uncertainty and shrinking the potential investor base. Mergers with US companies have also contributed to the trend. These consolidations often result in the relocation of corporate headquarters and stock listings to the larger market. This pattern reflects the UK's economic challenges compared to the US. London Stock Exchange Loses Record Number of Firms Since 2009 Crisis UK pension funds have dramatically reduced their investments in domestic shares , from over 40% three decades ago to just 4% today. This shift further erodes the appeal of London's market. The consequences extend beyond the financial sector. London's status as a global financial hub faces a serious threat, potentially impacting job markets, tax revenues, and the UK's overall economic standing. Experts suggest several measures to stem the tide, including encouraging UK pension funds to increase domestic equity investments, establishing a UK ISA for retail investors, and cutting stamp duty on shares to improve competitiveness. As 2025 approaches, the financial world watches London closely. The city's ability to adapt and reclaim its position will shape its role in global finance for years to come. This situation holds significant implications not just for investors, but for the future of international economic power dynamics. (The Center Square) – President Donald Trump has promised to reduce government waste and employed wealthy businessmen Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the charge. So far, spending on federal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies are prime targets for Musk and Ramaswamy, and a recent report shows just how widespread federal DEI spending has become. The report from Do No Harm shows 500 ways the Biden-Harris administration “infused DEI into the federal government.” Those examples include federal agencies starting dozens of equity training programs, doling out federal contracts and jobs based on race and gender, and teaching Americans more about their country’s racism, both past and present. The DEI explosion took off after Biden issued executive orders on his first day in office as well as another in June of 2021. The first executive order “established that affirmatively advancing equity, civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity is the responsibility of the whole of our Government.” The second order established “that it is the policy of my Administration to cultivate a workforce that draws from the full diversity of the Nation.” Biden also issued other executive orders, including around gender and sexuality, to the same effect his first year in office. Those orders gave federal bureaucrats not only permission but actually direct orders to embrace DEI policies across the board. And Do No Harm’s report shows they did, full-throttle, citing 80 “Equity Action Plans” submitted by agencies that promised over 500 taxpayer-funded actions. Some of the actions are seemingly mild, such as the U.S. Social Security Administration tracking more racial data. Other examples of DEI policies, though, made the federal government the nation’s teacher. For example, a blog for the U.S. Treasury Department lectures Americans on racial inequality. More directly, the federal government began implementing training programs for many federal employees that fully embrace racial ideology labeled “woke” by its opponents. For instance, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission invested in training for employees to consider equity more in its regulatory decisions. “Training will address how equity and environmental justice involves removing barriers underserved communities may face in the context of the Commission’s practices, processes, and policies,” FERC said in its Equity Action Plan. “Training also will address how, consistent with FERC’s mission and statutory duties, the Commission considers the impact of its actions on such communities. More specific trainings geared toward the responsibilities of different program offices and issue areas also may be identified or developed and offered.” Other actions seem to favor some groups over others. Changing the “percentage” of benefits received necessarily requires giving contracts, grants, or other federal resources to certain groups, almost always at the expense of white Americans, even more often white men. For example, the American Battle Monuments Commissions in its Equity Action Plan called for “expanding the percentage of U.S.-based contracted goods and services awarded to minority-owned, women-owned, and service disabled veteran-owned enterprises.” In fact, the ABMC pledged to pay a worker for this sole purpose. In another instance, the Smithsonian Institute pledged to recruit more Black and indigenous interns. “One of the simplest ways to ensure equity and accessibility in internships is to provide a livable stipend and advertise it clearly in promotion materials,” the federal group said in its Equity Action Plan. “Many units include a statement directly in their internship description about their commitment to equity. They also are intentional about making the application process simple and transparent, offering access services for interviews and allowing for multiple formats in place of a required essay.” The Smithsonian Institution , the federal steward of America’s past, also promised to begin promoting a historical framework that emphasizes American racism in the past and today. The federal group pledged to “Address the historical roots and contemporary impacts of race and racism in the United States and globally through interdisciplinary scholarship, creative partnerships, dialogue, education, and engagement.” The Center Square has reported on other examples of DEI policies and grants becoming the norm in recent years as well, though much of this kind of spending began before the Biden-Harris administration took power. Notable quotes by Jimmy CarterThe Buffalo Bills (9-2) are slated to face the San Francisco 49ers (5-6) on "Sunday Night Football" amid an ongoing lake-effect snowstorm in the Buffalo metro area this weekend. Leading up to kickoff, Bills quarterback Josh Allen made waves on social media on Friday after announcing he was engaged to actress Hailee Steinfeld. According to People , the star-studded couple made their relationship " Instagram official " in July, but "were first linked in May 2023, shortly after rumors circulated that Allen had called it quits with his longtime girlfriend, Brittany Williams." After a 10-year relationship with the 28-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback, Williams addressed the split , which reportedly occurred in early 2023, back in February. In the early morning hours on Saturday, the social media influencer shared her first post since the Allen-Steinfeld engagement news just hours earlier. Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images "My accounts have been hacked several times tonight. Trying to get it resolved. If anyone has any tips please lmk 🙏🥺," Williams wrote on his Instagram story. Brittany Williams via Instagram (@brittwilll) Williams told the "Martinis and Bikinis" podcast earlier in 2024 that, "I was with my ex-boyfriend for, on and off, like 10 years I would say. Coming into the dating world was very, very, very difficult for me at first because I never thought I'd be here again. But here I am. "I am very happy now. The dating life in New York is absolutely crazy but it’s so much fun. It's so entertaining. I makes you realize everything that you want." On the field, Allen has led the Bills to a 9-2 record entering Week 13, tied with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings for the second-best mark in the NFL. Through 11 games he has thrown for 2,543 yards (231.2/game), 18 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding an additional 316 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Dorn scores 21 as Elon knocks off Navy 69-63Jimmy Carter: Many evolutions for a centenarian ‘citizen of the world’
DELAWARE 72, RIDER 66Some quotations from Jimmy Carter: We have a tendency to exalt ourselves and to dwell on the weaknesses and mistakes of others. I have come to realize that in every person there is something fine and pure and noble, along with a desire for self-fulfillment. Political and religious leaders must attempt to provide a society within which these human attributes can be nurtured and enhanced. — from 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” Our government can express the highest common ideals of human beings — if we demand of government true standards of excellence. At this Bicentennial time of introspection and concern, we must demand such standards. — “Why Not the Best?” I am a Southerner and an American, I am a farmer, an engineer, a father and husband, a Christian, a politician and former governor, a planner, a businessman, a nuclear physicist, a naval officer, a canoeist, and among other things a lover of Bob Dylan’s songs and Dylan Thomas’s poetry. — “Why Not the Best?” Christ said, “I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.” I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do — and I have done it — and God forgives me for it. But that doesn’t mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. — Interview, November 1976 Playboy. This inauguration ceremony marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our Government, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people can provide it. — Inaugural address, January 1977. It’s clear that the true problems of our nation are much deeper — deeper than gasoline lines or energy shortages, deeper even than inflation and recession. ... All the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America. ... It is a crisis of confidence. — So-called “malaise” speech, July 1979. But we know that democracy is always an unfinished creation. Each generation must renew its foundations. Each generation must rediscover the meaning of this hallowed vision in the light of its own modern challenges. For this generation, ours, life is nuclear survival; liberty is human rights; the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants. — Farewell Address, January 1981. We appreciate the past. We are grateful for the present and we’re looking forward to the future with great anticipation and commitment. — October 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children. — December 2002, Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. Fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, and have managed to change the nuances and subtleties of historic debate into black-and-white rigidities and the personal derogation of those who dare to disagree. ... The influence of these various trends poses a threat to many of our nation’s historic customs and moral commitments, both in government and in houses of worship. — From 2005 book “Our Endangered Values.” I think that this breakthrough by Barack Obama has been remarkable. When he made his speech (on race) a few months ago in Philadelphia, I wept. I sat in front of the television and cried, because I saw that as the most enlightening and transforming analysis of racism and a potential end of it that I ever saw in my life. — August 2008, commenting on then-Sen. Barack Obama’s candidacy. I think it’s based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president. ... No matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect. — September 2009, reacting to Rep. Joe Wilson’s shout of “You lie!” during a speech to Congress by President Barack Obama. I’m still determined to outlive the last guinea worm. — 2010, on The Carter Center’s work to eradicate guinea worm disease. You know how much I raised to run against Gerald Ford? Zero. You know how much I raised to run against Ronald Reagan? Zero. You know how much will be raised this year by all presidential, Senate and House campaigns? $6 billion. That’s 6,000 millions. — September 2012, reacting to the 2010 “Citizens United” U.S. Supreme Court decision permitting unlimited third-party political spending. I have become convinced that the most serious and unaddressed worldwide challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare, unfortunately following the example set during my lifetime by the United States. — From 2014 book “A Call to Action.” I don’t think there’s any doubt now that the NSA or other agencies monitor or record almost every telephone call made in the United States, including cellphones, and I presume email as well. We’ve gone a long way down the road of violating Americans’ basic civil rights, as far as privacy is concerned. — March 2014, commenting on U.S. intelligence monitoring after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks We accept self-congratulations about the wonderful 50th anniversary – which is wonderful – but we feel like Lyndon Johnson did it and we don’t have to do anything anymore. — April 2014, commenting on racial inequality during a celebration of the Civil Rights Act’s 40th anniversary. I had a very challenging question at Emory (University) the other night: “How would you describe the United States of America today in one word?” And I didn’t know what to say for a few moments, but I finally said, “Searching.” I think the country in which we live is still searching for what it ought to be, and what it can be, and I’m not sure we’re making much progress right at this moment. — October 2014 during a celebration of his 90th birthday. The life we have now is the best of all. We have an expanding and harmonious family, a rich life in our church and the Plains community, and a diversity of projects at The Carter Center that is adventurous and exciting. Rosalynn and I have visited more than 145 countries, and both of us are as active as we have ever been. We are blessed with good health and look to the future with eagerness and confidence, but are prepared for inevitable adversity when it comes. — From 2015 book, “A Full Life.”Broncos stock report: Jaleel McLaughlin makes most of 14 snaps vs. Bengals. Daily Post Nigeria Gov Sani sacks Kaduna’s Internal Security Minister Samuel Aruwan Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport News Gov Sani sacks Kaduna’s Internal Security Minister Samuel Aruwan Published on November 30, 2024 By Matthew Atungwu Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, in a major cabinet reshuffle, has sacked the pioneer Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan. VESTAL — It had been a quarter of a century since the Salamanca football team last booked itself a spot in the NYS Final. A streak that was snapped as the Warriors emerged victorious in their business trip to Vestal High School where they took down Section 4 Champion Chenango Forks by a score of 34-13 in a NYSPHSAA Class C Semifinal. After a grueling, time-draining affair in which his Warriors answered his calls to respond to setbacks, Salamanca coach Chad Bartoszek told his team in their post-game huddle that what he saw was “football at its highest caliber.” “That game had everything,” Bartoszek said. “That game had it all. We knew that (first) third-quarter drive by Chenango was going to be their ‘Mike Tyson uppercut.’ They brought it too. They drive down and score (and) they hold us. That's the difference in this year's team, though, they responded to that punch. Were able to put together a drive and Maddox (Isaac) made a couple plays today that weren't scripted, he called them. Defensively, what can you say? Man, they were all over the field, flying. (Chenango Forks is) a tough out right there, and it's a storied program.” In the buildup to their semifinal appearance, Bartoszek had been emphasizing the importance of coming up with the answers when posed with setbacks or challenges. Something his team was unable to do last year when they fell to Waverly in the NYSPHSAA Semifinal. This year, the Warriors answered with a score of their own after conceding a touchdown on the back of a near-nine minute opening drive from the Blue Devils. They responded once again after Chenango Forks scored on its first drive of the second half by scoring 19 unanswered points. The second-half response from his team was critical according to Bartoszek. He knew that there was not a point where they could take their foot off the pedal considering how comfortable their opponent was in close games. “(The message at) half time was just expecting their best punch,” Bartoszek said. “We just told these guys that that program over there has been in this game before. In fact, they were in it against Waverly in (their) sectional final. So they were coming out of half OK, they felt good. We had to respond.” And while Salamanca’s streak of scoring 40-plus points in each postseason game so far this year may be over, Bartoszek won’t mind much considering how his team matched the physicality they were confronted with. “You had to match that team over there, you had to match their physicality,” Bartoszek said. “I know we have it, but it just keeps coming at you. You're in a fist fight. I hate to use all these violent terms to describe what just happened, but that's what it was, and we knew that's what it was going to be. We can play the fast game. We had to answer the physicality.” A LARGE part of the physicality the Warriors brought came in the form of hard-fought runs from quarterback Maddox Isaac and running back Xavier Peters. “(The strong runs) gave us a lot of energy,” Isaac said. “It gave us light on the outside, it gave us the ability to spread the ball on the outside as well as put it up the middle. ... They had a lot of kids in the box that could play well.” Isaac ran the ball 14 times for 54 yards while Peters took 17 handoffs for 138 yards and a touchdown. The majority of the damage Isaac, who Bartoszek credited as just having played the “game of his career,” did was through the air. He went 5-for-9 on passing attempts, recording 111 yards and connecting with Cory Holleran, Payton Bradley and Zach Trietley for three passing touchdowns. But it was not just the offense that managed to bring the heat to Chenango Forks. Defensively, Salamanca came away with a number of crucial stops, forced two fumbles, both of which it recovered, and reeled in an interception to all-but seal the win. Trietley led the Warriors with 14 total tackles with Holleran and Warrick Kyler also notching double-figures in that department with 12 and 11 respectively. With the win under its belt, Salamanca avenged their loss from a season ago and according to Isaac, is a dream come true for the team. “It's surreal, man, you dream about this as a kid, going to the state championship, but you never really think it's real, especially being in a small town like Salamanca,” Isaac said. “I think we're one of the smallest schools in the state in Class C. So, coming out and playing like this, it's insane.” Now, the Warriors will have a shot at the state title. In order to bring home the big prize, they will need to defeat Section 2 Champion Schuylerville at the JMA Dome at Syracuse University. Kickoff for that game will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
