Built on proximity, high stakes and decades of tradition, the blood pumps a little harder for players and fans alike this week. With seven at-large bids for the first 12-team College Football Playoff up for grabs, not to mention spots in next week’s conference championship games, some of these games take on even more significance. Rivalry Central will be College Station, Texas. That’s where the “Lone Star Showdown” will be renewed for the first time since 2011 on Saturday night. The winner between No. 3 Texas (No. 3 CFP) and No. 20 Texas A&M (No. 20 CFP) advances to the Southeastern Conference game to play Georgia. Speaking of No. 6 Georgia (No. 7 CFP), the Bulldogs host Georgia Tech on Friday in the game known as “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” The Bulldogs are double-digit favorites — ask Miami how that worked out when it played the Yellow Jackets — and they can save themselves a lot of playoff anxiety by taking care of business here. Michigan, which has taken a step back since winning the 2023 national championship, will have plenty of motivation to play the spoiler’s role in “The Game” at No. 2 Ohio State (No. 2 CFP). The Wolverines have won three straight against the Buckeyes, and an upset Saturday could keep Ohio State out of the Big Ten championship game again and dent its playoff dreams. No. 12 Clemson (No. 12 CFP), still alive for a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game against SMU, hosts No. 16 South Carolina (No. 15 CFP) in the “Palmetto Bowl” on Saturday. The winner keeps its playoff hopes alive. No. 13 Alabama (No. 13 CFP) will have its slim playoff chances squashed if it doesn’t beat Auburn at home in the Iron Bowl. Same with No. 15 Mississippi (No. 14 CFP), which hosts Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Friday. And then there’s the mess in the Big 12 that needs to be sorted out. Nine teams — yes, nine — remain alive for the conference championship game. No. 14 Arizona State (No. 16 CFP), picked to finish last in the 16-team league, goes to Tucson for the Territorial Cup against Arizona. The Sun Devils, with a win, have the best chance of advancing — though Big 12 number crunchers could be sorting through tiebreakers by Saturday night. No. 3 Texas (10-1, 6-1 SEC, No. 3 CFP) at No. 20 Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2, No. 20 CFP), Saturday, 7:30 p.m. EST (ABC) The tradition is back after a 13-year hiatus. That’s a big deal, and even bigger with the winner going to Atlanta next week to face Georgia in the SEC championship game. The Aggies probably need to win the SEC to make the playoff; the Longhorns can get to the playoff if they lose this game but their seeding could take a hit. Texas has won 10 straight road games and takes a top-20 offense and top-five defense to Kyle Field. Texas A&M has dropped two of its last three, including last week’s four-overtime loss at Auburn. The Longhorns are 5 1/2-point favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. This week’s Heisman Trophy polls indicate a two-man race between Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. Ballots go out Monday to the 928 voters. Hunter had eight catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns and made seven tackles and broke up a pass in last week’s loss to Kansas. The Buffaloes play Oklahoma State at home on Friday. Jeanty has put together the nation’s first 2,000-yard rushing season since 2019. He’s gone over 100 yards in all 11 games, including four over 200. The Broncos host Oregon State on Friday. 6 — Tulane’s nation-leading defensive touchdowns, according to Sportradar. 7 — Illinois wins secured in the final minute or overtime since the start of the 2023 season. 9 — Collin Rogers' career field goals of 50-plus yards for SMU, most in the nation since 2022. 14 — Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter’s career lost fumbles, most in the nation since 2021. 16-2 — UTSA’s record in November games under fifth-year coach Jeff Traylor. Miami (Ohio) (7-4, 6-1 MAC) at Bowling Green (7-4, 6-1), Saturday, noon EST (ESPNU) Miami, the defending Mid-American Conference champion, will go to the league championship game in Detroit next week for the third time in six years if it wins. Bowling Green will play for the MAC title for the first time since 2015 if it wins. The RedHawks enter on a six-game win streak; the Falcons have won five in a row. The spotlight will be on BG tight end Harold Fannin Jr., who could give the MAC an NFL first-round draft pick for the second straight year (Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell went to Philadelphia as the No. 22 pick in April.) UCF has regressed in Gus Malzahn’s fourth season, and second since it moved from the American Athletic Conference to the Big 12. The Knights are 10-16 since the end of the 2022 regular season and have lost seven of their last eight entering Friday’s home game against Utah. The papers will be rigorous yet provocative, continually pushing the boundaries of intellectual and policy debates. In this Marshall Paper, Ford Hart argues that Chinese Communist Party (CCP) political institutions, the CCP’s practical behavior, and continued veneration of Marxism-Leninism in the CCP constitution highlight the Soviet model’s deep influence on Beijing. As such, lessons from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) can help us understand the CCP’s approach to governance today. Soviet-origin governing institutions and processes exert enduring influence on the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Its substantially imported political structure arguably has at least as much practical impact on Beijing’s behavior as the ideology it also imported from Moscow. While the PRC is not a carbon copy of the USSR, Soviet lessons still have much to teach observers about Chinese governance. PRC policy shifts over the past two decades have reinforced the relevance of these lessons, and the increased opacity of the Chinese political system makes it necessary to exploit all available tools to assess its behavior. The Soviet experience illuminates, for instance, the impact of the Leninist apparatus on PRC regime behavior, the challenges for understanding China, and the future of its political system. Key insights include the following: The Soviet model is not China’s destiny; it is only one of several factors that have shaped PRC history and will continue to influence its future. Nonetheless, understanding it is indispensable to making sense of China’s behavior and prospects for change. The CCP embraces a Leninist apparatus that exhibits strong continuity with the party-state transferred to Beijing by the Bolsheviks and the Soviet Union between the early 1920s and 1950s. Vladimir Ilyich Lenin pioneered its operating norms before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and led the system’s improvisational build-out during its early years in power. Other Soviet leaders, especially Joseph Stalin, contributed to its development. Leninist regimes—especially the surviving communist states (China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam, and Cuba) and the two former European ones established principally through indigenous struggle (the USSR and Yugoslavia)—represent a category of authoritarianism with characteristic institutions and processes that manifest recurring patterns of behavior. (The Leninist regimes of other East European communist states were largely external creations that ended with the USSR’s demise.) All authoritarian regimes are repressive, and some practices of Leninist regimes are common among them, but most of them are not Leninist. A Leninist system features an authoritarian regime in which the ruling elite monopolizes political power in the name of a revolutionary ideology through a highly articulated party structure that parallels, penetrates, and dominates the state at all levels and extends to workplaces, residential areas, and local institutions. Party members are subject to strict discipline and ideological indoctrination, regardless of whether they work in the party apparatus or, like most, outside it. In its struggle to seize and then hold power, the Bolshevik Party pioneered hallmark institutions long familiar to outside observers: a Central Committee, a secretariat with specialized departments (e.g., propaganda, personnel, and internal discipline), and a supreme leadership body at the very center commonly known as the Politburo—all mirrored at subordinate levels. From the capital to the most distant locality, a Leninist party controls leadership appointments and transfers not merely within itself and the state but also among the military and security forces, the economy, academia, the media, the arts, religious institutions, social organizations, and beyond. Classic Soviet operational practices—such as centralization, mobilization, united front operations, and cadre self-criticism—endure in China. A ruling Leninist regime always seeks to maintain robustly coercive security services that are loyal, first and foremost, to the party itself. It also exhibits high levels of intervention in the economy, ranging widely from state capitalism to command economics. Control of the economy is as important to party dominance as it is to overall national strength or the popular welfare. The foundations of CCP ideology also came from Moscow. This body of thought combined a Marxist, class-based economic interpretation of history progressing inexorably toward utopia, Lenin’s own theoretical revisions to Marxism, and, crucial to governance, his advocacy of an elite revolutionary party’s unique role in leading the masses. To a ruling communist party, Marxism-Leninism’s single greatest ideological value may well be in granting the secular equivalent of divine right rule through its role as the sole interpreter of “laws” of history. Karl Marx’s thoughts on social and economic justice remained enormously appealing, but it was Lenin’s ruthless pragmatism that enabled communist regimes to seize and hold onto power. Chinese communists learned from Moscow that although the content of the ideology could vary substantially, its mere existence was functionally vital to the party’s survival. It is telling that while communist regimes around the world have extensively revised their ideologies, they have been less liberal in modifying core structures, norms, and processes.Carbon Capture And Storage’s Deal KillerNations strive for climate funding consensus as COP29 deadline nears
Emboldened by the view from the top of the NFC North, the Detroit Lions are out to eliminate nightmare holiday gatherings when the Chicago Bears come to town Thursday for a lunchtime division duel. The Lions (10-1) are streaking one direction, the Bears (4-7) the other in the first matchup of the season between teams on opposite ends of the division. Riding a nine-game winning streak, their longest since a 10-game streak during their first season in Detroit in 1934, the Lions are burdened by losses in their traditional Thanksgiving Day game the past seven seasons. Three of the defeats are courtesy of Chicago. The Bears and Lions get together for the 20th time on Thanksgiving -- the Bears have 11 wins -- this week in the first of two meetings between the teams in a 25-day span. Detroit goes to Soldier Field on Dec. 22. "I think there's two things," Campbell said of the Thanksgiving losing streak. "Number one -- Get a W. And it's a division win that's why this huge. Number two is because the players are going to get a couple of days off. So, they have family, friends in, it'd be nice to feel good about it when you're with everybody because it's just not real fun. It's not real fun to be around." Detroit (10-1) owns the best record in the NFC but the Lions aren't even assured of a division title. Minnesota sits one game behind them and Green Bay is two games back. The Bears (4-7) sit in last place and would likely need to run the table to have any chance of making the playoffs. The Lions have been dominant in all phases and haven't allowed a touchdown in the past 10 consecutive quarters. Detroit's offense ranks first in points per game (32.7) and second in total yardage (394.3) The Lions defense has not given up a touchdown in the last 10 quarters. Rookie placekicker Jake Bates has made all 16 of his field goal attempts, including four from 50-plus yards over the past three games. Chicago shows up in a foul mood. The Bears are saddled with a five-game losing streak and Chicago's defense has been destroyed for nearly 2,000 total yards in the last four games. The Bears failed to reach the 20-point mark four times in five outings since they last won a game. In their latest defeat, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense perked up but they lost to Minnesota in overtime, 30-27. "We have to play complementary football for us to be able to win these games," coach Matt Eberflus said. "The games we have won, we have done that. The games we have been close we've missed the mark a little bit. Over the course of the year, it's been one side or the other, this side or that side. In this league you have to be good on all sides to win. That's what we are searching for." Williams threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. The wide receiver trio of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Romeo Odunze combined for 21 receptions and two touchdowns while tight end Cole Kmet caught seven passes. "What I've been impressed with is just how he has grown," Campbell said. "He has grown every game but these last two I really feel like he's taken off and what they're doing with him has been really good for him and he just looks very composed. He doesn't get frazzled, plays pretty fast, and he's an accurate passer, big arm, and he's got some guys that can get open for him." Detroit's banged-up secondary could be susceptible against the Bears' veteran receivers in their bid to pull off an upset on Thursday. The Lions put two defensive backs on injured reserve in the past week and top cornerback Carlton Davis isn't expected to play due to knee and thumb injuries. Detroit offensive tackle Taylor Decker (knee) and top returner Kalif Raymond (foot) are also expected to miss the game, though Campbell expressed optimism that running back David Montgomery (shoulder), formerly of the Bears, would play. Bears safety Elijah Hicks was listed as a DNP for Tuesday's walkthrough. --Field Level MediaFormula 1 had reached an “agreement in principal” for Cadillac to join the grid as an 11th team for the 2026 season. The US car-making giant also announced plans to produce their own F1 power unit “by the end of the decade”, making Cadillac a true full works operation. GM president Mark Reuss said: “It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world. “This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.” “General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM [original equipment manufacturing] world and is working with impressive partners,” said Ben Sulayem. “I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application to bring a GM/Cadillac branded team onto the grid for the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship. “All parties, including the FIA, will continue to work together to ensure the process progresses smoothly.” The FIA approved an application to enter the world championship from Andretti Global in October last year. However Formula One Management must also give its approval for any new team to join the grid, and it rejected the application earlier this year. Rumours during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend claimed FOM was preparing to announce a reversal of its position which would allow the new entrant to arrive in 2026. F1 confirmed today it has reached an “agreement in principle” with Cadillac. Andretti obtained the backing of Cadillac, which originally announced it planned to enter as as the team’s power unit supplier in 2028. Last month Michael Andretti has stepped down in charge of the Silverstone-based project, prompting speculation Cadillac would rebrand the entire entry. The FIA selected Andretti from four potential entrants which reached the second phase of its application process. The unsuccessful rival bids included Formula Equal , which was backed by former BAR F1 team principal Craig Pollock; Formula 2 team Hitech GP, whose team principal Oliver Oakes has since taken charge at Alpine; and an Asian entrant under the name LKY SUNZ . F1’s statement announcing the impending arrival of Cadillac made no mention of the Andretti name. “General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “We look forward to seeing the progress and growth of this application, certain of the full collaboration and support of all the parties involved.” This article will be updated Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-freeThe AP Top 25 college football poll is back every week throughout the season! Sanders helped the Wolfpack (6-1) earn a second win following one-possession games against Vanderbilt and VCU. After hitting the decisive 3-pointer with five seconds left in Friday's 64-61 win over VCU, Sanders made 7 of 10 shots, hit three 3s and sank 10 of 13 free throws Sunday. Nick Davidson added 223 points as Nevada led by as many as 19 and shot 58.9 percent. Brandon Love contributed 11 on 5-of-5 shooting as the Wolfpack scored 46 points in the paint and scored at least 85 for the fourth time this season. Marchelus Avery led the Cowboys (4-2) with 15 points and Arturo Dean added 13. Robert Jennings and Abou Ousmane added 11 apiece but leading scorer Bryce Thompson was held to seven points on 1-of-9 shooting as Oklahoma State shot 42 percent and 73.2 percent (30-of-41) at the line. After Avery's 3 forged a 12-12 tie with 13:41 remaining, Nevada gradually gained separation. The Wolfpack took a 24-15 lead on Chuck Bailey's jumper in the paint with 8:28 left but the Cowboys inched back, getting within 33-31 on a dunk by Avery with 4:11 left. Another Bailey jumper staked Nevada to a 40-33 lead by halftime. Nevada began pulling away early in the second half as it scored eight in a row for a 52-40 lead on a basket by Love with 16:44 left. A 3 by Sanders opened a 62-43 lead with 14:06 remaining before Oklahoma State charged back. After Nevada made eight straight shots, the Cowboys countered with 11 straight points and trailed 62-54 with 11:19 left on a 3-pointer by Avery. Thompson made his first basket by sinking a jumper with 10:37 left to get Oklahoma State within 64-56 left, and Keller's triple cut the margin to 70-64 nearly three minutes later. The Cowboys were within 78-72 on a basket by Avery with 3:56 remaining, but he fouled out about a minute later and the Wolfpack outscored Oklahoma State 12-6 the rest of the way as Sanders sank five free throws. --Field Level Media
Hyderabad, November 24: Hyderabad police arrested three persons, including a couple from Andhra Pradesh, for the kidnapping of a month-old baby boy from the government-run Niluofer Hospital for children in the city, and restored the child to his family. The baby was kidnapped from the hospital on the evening of Saturday and was rescued by the police early on Sunday in Jogu Lamba Gadwal district while the kidnappers were taking him to Andhra Pradesh. Woman Befriends Mother and Kidnaps Her 1-Month-Old Baby at Niloufer Hospital; Police Launch Investigation. According to police, a couple from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh kidnapped the baby with the help of their relative as they were desperate to have a male child. The baby boy was kidnapped by a woman who approached his mother Haseena Begum and grandmother to help them in completing the formalities for discharge at the Aarogya Shree ward. Haseena, 27, had given birth to a baby boy at a hospital in Zaheerabad town of Telangana on October 25. As the newborn was suffering from jaundice, on the advice of local doctors, she brought the child to Niluofer Hospital in Hyderabad. After the treatment, Haseena with her mother were signing discharge papers when a burka-clad woman offered to help them in completing the formalities. She diverted their attention and escaped with the infant. Vikhroli: Lawyer Befriends and Rapes Woman on Promise of Marriage After Helping Victim’s Mother Get Bail in Theft Case, Arrested. Haseena filed a complaint with the Nampally Police Station. The police formed five teams to rescue the baby. Based on the CCTV footage, police found that kidnappers were proceeding on National Highway 44 towards Kurnool. DCP Central zone Akshansh Yadav informed SP Gadwal and in turn, SP Gadwal alerted DSP Gadwal and Manapadu and Undavalli police stations on the Kurnool highway. The police intercepted a vehicle at the Pullur Toll Plaza and found the kidnappers with the baby. After confirming the baby boy’s photo with the complainant, the accused were arrested. The accused have been identified as Shaheen Begum, Abdulla alias Venkatesh and his wife Reshma alias Renuka. The couple hails from Anantapur district and resides in the First Lancer area in Hyderabad. According to police, Abdulla and Reshma married in 2009 and they are blessed with three daughters. Reshma was eight months pregnant and they feared having one more girl child. Desperate for a male child, they hatched a plan to kidnap a baby and executed it with the help of Shaheen, the younger sister of Reshma, who had come to Hyderabad from Anantapur to assist her during pregnancy. Police said Shaheen and Abdulla went to Niluofer Hospital to execute their plan. While Shaheen kidnapped the baby boy, Abdulla was waiting near the hospital and they sped away in an autorickshaw. Maresca led the Foxes to the Sky Bet Championship title last season before joining Chelsea over the summer. Leicester famously toasted their improbable Premier League success in 2016 with an impromptu bash at Vardy’s house. But the venue for last April’s party was not at the striker’s abode, but at Maresca’s house when the players turned up unannounced at 2am. Maresca recalled: “The best present I had from last season was when we got promoted and they arrived at my home. All the team. “This showed the connection between the players; they could go for a party at a different place but they all arrived at my home. It was a fantastic connection and I will always be thankful for them. “I was at home celebrating with my staff and my family and about two o’clock in the morning all the squad was there. We celebrated all together. Last night at Enzo’s 🏡 💙 pic.twitter.com/dqP8BFsDn3 — Leicester City (@LCFC) April 27, 2024 “When I was a player and I won things I never thought to go to the manager’s home. That shows the connection.” Similarly to when they clinched the Premier League crown, Leicester were not actually playing when they found out they were promoted after Leeds lost at QPR. “To be honest I was at home watching the game and when it finished all the staff came over – and later the players,” added the Italian. “They didn’t knock on the door, they were in the garden and knocked on the window. What time did they leave? I don’t remember.” Vardy might not be having a party at the end of this season but he is still banging in the goals at 37 and Maresca rates the striker even more highly than England’s two top goalscorers – Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney. “People don’t realise how good he is,” added Maresca. “I know England have been quite lucky because of Kane and Rooney, this type of striker, they are fantastic. “But Jamie is, if you ask me, the best one.” Maresca returns to the King Power Stadium for the first time with Chelsea on Saturday, but he will be without captain Reece James due to a hamstring problem.
