Hospitals and houses were inundated in Chennai and its neighbourhoods on Saturday following Cyclone Fengal induced heavy downpour, as civic authorities said clearing works were on in a 'war-footing.' Barricades and umbrellas were swept away by gusty winds and road users scurried for cover as rains poured, with cyclone Fengal inching closer to the shoreline on Saturday, leaving many areas in and around Chennai under water. Curiously, a lot of people, especially young men and women, frolicked at beaches, and strangely, visitors could be spotted at the Mamallapuram world heritage site too, despite the government warning people against going near beaches, in view of the high tides. Wind speed was pretty high in coastline areas such as Marakkanam in Villupuram district. Rainwater entered the premises of two state-run hospitals at Chromepet, a general hospital and a facility for thoracic medicine, both of which are located side by side and frequented by people. Water was close to the level of one's ankle even inside the hospital, leaving health care seekers and doctors in a tight spot. Police and local authorities placed sandbags at entry points and said all steps were being taken to address the issue. From Desmond Mgboh, Kano Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has reiterated his administration’s dedication to leveraging technology to strengthen democracy and improve governance in Jigawa State. Speaking while declaring open a Gombe State House of Assembly Retreat in Dutse, the governor stressed the critical role of technology in modernizing legislative processes and ensuring better service delivery for citizens. The retreat, themed “Technology Adoption in a Democracy,” was organized to help members of the Gombe State House of Assembly integrate technology into their legislative functions. Commending the initiative, Governor Namadi praised the Assembly for taking proactive steps to tackle the challenges of contemporary governance. “Democracy thrives when people are given a voice, and in today’s digital world, technology amplifies that voice. It’s not just an option anymore—it’s essential. Transparency, inclusivity, and accountability all depend on how well we use technology in governance.” Governor Namadi reflected on Jigawa State’s early strides in ICT, including its key contributions to the establishment of Galaxy Backbone and the pioneering role of institutions like the Informatics Institute Kazaure, which is now an ICT polytechnic. He described these achievements as the backbone of Nigeria’s ICT revolution and highlighted how Jigawa continues to lead by example in technology adoption. He shared insights into his administration’s use of e-governance and data-driven strategies to improve critical sectors such as education, health, and finance, stating that these efforts are proof of his government’s commitment to digital transformation and efficient service delivery. The governor also called on lawmakers to champion policies that enhance digital literacy, protect citizen data, and expand access to e-participation tools while safeguarding democracy through robust cybersecurity measures. He emphasized that collaboration among states is vital to building a democratic system powered by technology. It’s looking more and more likely the Vikings will be without veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore for a second straight game. He hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury against the Arizona Cardinals a couple of weeks ago. ADVERTISEMENT Though he has an extra 24 hours to prepare this week with the Vikings set to host the Chicago Bears on Monday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, the fact that Gilmore still hasn’t practiced in any capacity isn’t a good sign. After not participating in the walkthrough on Thursday afternoon at TCO Performance Center, Gilmore was listed as a non participant in practice on Friday afternoon. It would make sense for the Vikings to be cautious with Gilmore considering how important he’s been to the secondary this season. They want to make sure he’s back at 100 percent for the playoffs. In the absence of Gilmore, veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau has logged more playing time. There also has been more responsibility placed on fellow cornerbacks Byron Murphy Jr. and Shaq Griffin, with safety Josh Metellus also mixing in at nickel. ADVERTISEMENT It appears that edge rusher Pat Jones II is getting closer to making his return given that he was listed as a full participant in practice on Friday afternoon. He has been working through a knee injury and missed last Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Having Jones back would be a major boost for the Vikings on defense, as he has found a role as a situational pass rusher. He has a career high 7.0 sacks this season while showcasing the ability to apply pressure off the edge or up the middle. In response to his philanthropy near and far, safety Cam Bynum has been named the NFLPA Community MVP for Week 15. Not only has Bynum regularly used his platform in the NFL to help with natural disaster relief in the Philippines, he has continued to spread joy in and around the Twin Cities through charitable events hosted by his Bynum Faith Foundation. ADVERTISEMENT The NFLPA will donate $10,000 to his foundation or charity of choice. In turn, Bynum will take part in a special visit to a local school, children’s hospital, or community center. The recognition also makes Bynum eligible for the Alan Page Community Award, the NFLPA’s highest player honor, which includes an additional $100,000 donation to the winner’s charities. The rest of the injury report was good news for the Vikings as running back Aaron Jones (back), tight end Josh Oliver (wrist/ankle), and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel (hip) were all listed as full participants. Laura Benanti is looking back on her experience working with Zachary Levi on Broadway, how she did not like him back then, and how she really doesn’t like him right now. The two actors played the romantic leads in a production of the musical She Loves Me back in 2016. Zachary came under fire this year when he publicly endorsed Donald Trump for president and he received further backlash for claiming She Loves Me actor Gavin Creel ‘s death was caused by the COVID-19 vaccine. Now, Laura is slamming Zachary in a new interview. Keep reading to find out more... “I never liked him,” Laura said on That’s a Gay Ass Podcast . “Everyone was like, ‘He’s so great!’ And I was like, ‘No, he’s not. He’s sucking up all the f–king energy in this room. He wants to mansplain everybody’s part to them.’” Laura said that Zachary tried to get the She Loves Me cast to do dance parties before the show every night, which some people enjoyed, but not her. She said, “He really sucked everybody in with his like dance party energy. Like, ‘We’re doing a dance party at half-hour.’ I was like, ‘Good luck. Have fun.’” Laura also addressed Zachary ‘s comments about Gavin. “To use his memory for his political agenda and to watch him try to make himself cry until he had one single tear, which he did not wipe away, I was like, ‘F–k you forever,’” Laura said. Watch the full podcast below!AQABA, Jordan (AP) — Top U.S. officials were in the Middle East on Thursday, pushing for stability in Syria and an end to Israel’s 14-month war in the Gaza Strip in a last-ditch diplomatic push by the outgoing Biden administration before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in a few weeks. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Jordan and Turkey for talks on how to ensure a peaceful transition of power in Syria following the ouster of longtime President Bashar Assad , while White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan was in Israel in a bid to wrap up a ceasefire with Hamas militants. A ceasefire would give President Joe Biden a final diplomatic victory after a turbulent term in which his administration has been unable to halt a brutal war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in Gaza and plunged the territory into a humanitarian crisis. Trump has demanded the immediate release of hostages , threatening on social media that otherwise there would be “HELL TO PAY,” and has urged the U.S. not to get involved in Syria , where some 900 troops are based to combat the Islamic State militant group. Speaking to reporters in Tel Aviv, Sullivan expressed cautious optimism that conditions were ripe for halting the long-running conflict before the Biden administration leaves office. “I wouldn’t be here now if I didn’t think this thing was just waiting until after January 20,” he said. That's when Trump will be inaugurated. The war erupted with Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, cross-border attack, in which militants killed some 1,200 people in Israel and took 250 others hostage. Israel’s retaliatory offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 45,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza health officials, caused widespread displacement and led to severe hunger across the territory. U.S.-led ceasefire efforts have repeatedly faltered throughout the war, with the warring sides blaming each other for the failure. Israel has said it is seeking the destruction of Hamas’ governing and military capabilities, and at times has pressed ahead with the offensive in the face of U.S. calls for restraint. Hamas, meanwhile, has stuck to its demands that any ceasefire include a permanent end to the fighting and full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The U.S. has backed Israel with key military and diplomatic support. But at times, it also has appeared helpless in urging Israel to minimize civilian casualties and to enable the delivery of more humanitarian aid into Gaza. Sullivan said the rapid-fire changes across the region have improved the chances for success. He said Israel’s ceasefire with Hezbollah last month, ending more than a year of fighting, the collapse of Syria’s government and the heavy blow Israel has inflicted on Hamas have all changed the negotiating climate. He also said there has been good cooperation with the incoming Trump administration , with widespread agreement between them. “The surround sound of these negotiations is different today than it has been in the past,” Sullivan told reporters after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I got the sense from the prime minister that he’s ready to do the deal,” Sullivan added. “We see movement from Hamas.” Sullivan is now scheduled to head to Qatar and Egypt — two Middle Eastern powers that have served as mediators throughout the war. Any deal would include the release of hostages held by Hamas, an exchange of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and a surge in badly needed humanitarian aid into Gaza. Israel says Hamas is holding about 100 hostages — at least one-third of whom are believed to have died. As Sullivan was in Israel, Blinken was meeting with Jordanian and Turkish leaders to push for a peaceful transition of power in post-Assad Syria. “We’re back in the region at a time of both real promise but also peril for Syria and for its neighbors,” Blinken told reporters in Aqaba, Jordan, after meeting with King Abdullah II. He said the U.S. was working with its partners across the region to help Syria “transition away from Assad’s brutal dictatorship” and toward a new government that isn’t dominated by any single religious or ethnic group or by an outside power or the Islamic State militant group. “We’re determined to do everything we can, working in close coordination with partners, to help the Syrian people realize that aspiration,” Blinken said. Syria is home to an array of armed groups with competing interests and allies. In northern Syria, U.S.-backed Kurdish separatists are battling to fend off fighters supported by Turkey. In the country’s center and northeast, the extremist Islamic State group maintains a presence that generates concern for the U.S. And the rebels, hailing mainly from the Sunni Muslim majority in Syria, face the daunting task of creating a transitional government for the war-ravaged country. The leader of Syria’s biggest rebel faction is a former al-Qaida commander whose Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group is poised to chart the country’s future. The U.S. and the U.N. have designated the hard-line Sunni Islamist group a terrorist organization. The goal of creating a free and pluralistic Syria will be a challenge given the bad blood stretching across Syria’s sectarian lines after over half a century of Assad family rule and more than 13 years of civil war that claimed an estimated 500,000 lives. Blinken started his trip in Jordan, a close U.S. ally whose fragile economy has been strained over the years by an influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. Next, he was headed to Turkey — a backer of Sunni rebels but a foe of the Kurds. Israel, meanwhile, has sent troops into Syria — its northern neighbor — and seized a former buffer zone that had been demilitarized since a 1974 truce. Israel has described the move as defensive, meant to protect its border and to prevent armed groups from seizing weapons left behind by Assad’s army. Netanyahu said Thursday that the move was temporary. But he said Israel would remain inside Syria until another party can secure the border, raising the likelihood of a prolonged and open-ended presence. Sullivan tried to play down the Israeli move, noting that Assad was toppled just days ago and it is too early to jump to any conclusions. But Blinken was more cautious as he called for restraint by all regional players with interests in Syria. He said the U.S. is “already talking to Israel” and others about the future of Syria. “Across the board, when it comes to any actors who have real interests in Syria, it’s also really important at this time that we all try to make sure that we’re not sparking any additional conflicts,” he said. ESPN to pull the plug on 'Around the Horn'Kendrick Lamar — rap’s undoubted MVP of 2024 — surprised fans on Friday (Nov. 22) with the release of his GNX album. The project seemingly dropped out of the sky without warning around 12 p.m. ET. Filled with 12 tracks, GNX boasts a pair of assists from former TDE running mate SZA , Sam Dew as well as emerging artists such as Deyra Barrera, Ink, Dody 6, AzChike and more. Kendrick was rumored to be cooking up an album in the wake of battling Drake , and the Compton native came through. GNX follows Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2022, which topped the Billboard 200 with 295,000 total units earned in the first week. Sounwave notches co-production credits across the project while Jack Antonoff and Kamasi Washington also make appearances. Lamar dropped off a teaser before the album hit streaming services with the clip featuring what appears to be a 1987 Buick Grand National Regal GNX, which inspired the album title. With the Super Bowl on the horizon, K. Dot will have new music with him when he heads to New Orleans to take the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show stage in February. Even prior to the album’s arrival, Lamar notched seven Grammy Award nominations earlier this month — five of which came tied to his “Not Like Us” Drake diss. Check out the album and all of the 12 tracks ranked from worst to best below. Kenny weaves through the distorted bounce with a hazy flow with some help from Ink, Siete and Roddy Ricch. The West Coast tribute fails to break through like some of the other stronger tracks on the LP so it’s forced to blend in with the background. “Peekaboo” is a perfect descriptor aligning Lamar’s career. He only comes out of hiding on his own terms to shake up the game and then can go back into hibernation for months without anyone hearing a word, a social media post, a TMZ paparazzi photo or anything from him. As Charlamagne Tha God described him, K. Dot really is rap’s boogeyman or the rap version of WWE legend Undertaker. Was that Kendrick mimicking NBA star Kawhi Leonard’s viral “hey, hey, hey” clip? This guy can work just about anything into the flow of a song. Only Kendrick can turn irrelevant sayings like “Hey now, say now” into a menacing chorus. “The Black know I just strangled me a GOAT,” he raps in a possible jab at Drake following their battle. The pulsating reverb transitions to traditional Cali bounce and Kendrick opens the floor for an assist from emerging L.A. rapper Dody 6. In the midst of the Kendrick-Drake feud, a repeated take in an attempt to ding Lamar was that he rarely uplifted younger artists coming up from Los Angeles. It feels like he intentionally made that part of his story with GNX . Especially with the title track, he shouts about putting the “West Coast back in front of s–t.” Then he takes a back seat as if he’s iconic UCLA head coach John Wooden and allows Young Threat, Peysoh and Hitta J3 to run the three-man weave. “Gloria” serves as Kendrick’s version of Common’s memorable “I Used to Love H.E.R.” In what starts out as a love song, Lamar vulnerably opens up about the complications and toxicities of his relationship with what appears to be his fiancee Whitney. While she had other suitors on their journey, he also had commitment issues. However, the final line reveals K. Dot was talking about his love for his pen with references to writer’s block placating his enduring journey to the top of the food chain in this rap game. A second hat tip to Nas as Kendrick seemingly interpolates the Queensbridge icon’s 2002 “One Mic.” Lamar draws up a scenario of being at heaven’s gates seeking eternal life. He builds out a case about how his life’s practices have prepared him for this moment while powering through trials and tribulations. “I did it with integrity and n—-s still try to hate on me/ Just wait and see, more blood will be spillin, it’s just paint to me,” Kenny promises. A haunting intro sprinkled in with some Latin flavor courtesy of Deyra Berrara. Kendrick balances an ego boost coming off his dominant Drake victory and spewing his version of a State of the Union. All while riding in his GNX bumping Anita Baker. Dot grapples with his Lil Wayne fandom while taking what he hoped was his spot at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in Weezy’s hometown. He was baffled by the backlash and shouted out Nas for showing him love. There aren’t many direct references to his Drake feud, but Lamar lets his disappointment in Snoop be known after the Doggfather reposted Drizzy’s AI-assisted “Taylore Made Freestyle.” “I prayed it was the edibles/ I couldn’t believe it, it was only right for me to let it go,” he raps. An all-star lineup of Jack Antonoff, Sounwave, Cardo and Kamasi Washington are among the cast lending their talents to the luscious production of “Luther” — which builds around a sample of Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s “If This World Were Mind.” SZA joins the party for her and Kendrick’s fifth collaboration and their chemistry hasn’t taken a step back as they mix vocals with ease for a smooth blend of rapping and singing. K. Dot takes away the world’s darkness and reimagines a society without pain and suffering. Drake attempted to mock Kendrick’s “The Heart” series with his own installment in the decorated series that originated in 2010, but as Lamar made a habit of in their feud, Dot flipped the script to up the score with the real sixth addition on “Heart Pt. 6.” Sounwave and Jack Antonoff lay out an ethereal soundscape built around a soothing Neptune-produced SWV sample for Kendrick to reminisce on his humble beginnings surrounded by his TDE family members like Jay Rock and Ab-Soul. Lamar briefly allows his ego to creep in: “Time flies, I’m carryin’ debates of a top five,” he raps. But also takes accountability for his Black Hippy supergroup falling flat. “I jog my memory, knowin’ Black Hippy didn’t work ’cause of me/ Creatively, I moved on with new concepts in reach,” he candidly admits. It’s another worthy chapter in the books. Sampling Debbie Deb’s “When I Hear Music” banger makes this some of the most fun production across the entire project. Initially teased as a snippet tentatively titled “Broccoli” over the summer, fans were happy to hear the full track live up to the hype. “Squabble Up” gets the shoulders bobbing as Kendrick basks in his status as his most brash self. “Tell me why the fuck you n—s rap if it’s fictional/ Tell me why the fuck you n—s fed if you criminal,” he fires at the opposition. Kendrick yelling “MUSTARD” has to be the next little Kendrick-ism to go viral on social media. The meme possibilities are endless and the “Not Like Us” producer has to at least sample that in the future, right? The beat makes a stark transition from G-Funk to triumphant horns as Lamar lets society know how disgusted he is with where things are at. As we’ve seen on plenty of other tracks, Kenny has no issue letting his hate for certain pockets of culture fly. Songmaking at its finest. Kendrick’s versatility along with his vivid storytelling ability allow him to shine brightest on “Reincarnated,” which samples 2Pac’s “Made N—-z.” Lamar pays homage to the West Coast deity while mirroring an aggressive flow from Pac. He cinematically connects to the spirits of a 1940s guitarist (possibly John Lee Hooker or Jackie Wilson) and a ’60s singer on the Chitlin Circuit (Tammi Terrell or Dinah Washington) who struggled with substance abuse using 8-balls of cocaine as medicine. Dot then turns the camera lens on himself for the final poignant verse as he battles his demons while looking to rewrite the devil’s story. CASPER, Wyo. — The first surgeries using the new da Vinci 5 surgical system for robotic-assisted surgery have been performed at Banner Wyoming Medical Center, the first hospital in Wyoming to use the system. “We are thrilled to become first hospital in Wyoming with the latest, greatest da Vinci 5,” said Lance Porter, chief executive officer of Banner Wyoming Medical Center. “Surgeons who operate at Banner Wyoming Medical Center have a great deal of experience in robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery and this new tool reflects our commitment to providing access to high-quality, excellent care for our patients.” The da Vinci 5 is designed to enhance surgeon precision with the goal of improving patient outcomes. More than 150 new enhancements have been developed to support surgeon autonomy and care team efficiency. Banner Wyoming Medical Center was the first hospital in Wyoming to use any da Vinci robotic system, beginning with the da Vinci S in 2008. The S model was replaced with the da Vinci Xi system in 2017. “We have been using da Vinci technology at Banner Wyoming Medical Center for many years, and the da Vinci 5 will help us expand our surgical program and provide advanced surgical care for our patients,” said Dr. Aimee Gough, the robotic surgery champion for Banner Wyoming Medical Center and surgeon at Wyoming Surgical Associates in Casper. “We’ll continue to use our existing da Vinci system alongside the new da Vinci 5.” Joy Anderson was the first patient to have a procedure done with Gough on Dec. 2. She moved to Casper from Rock Springs about four years ago and is impressed with the level of technology offered at Banner Wyoming Medical Center. “I didn’t expect Casper to have something like this,” she said. “I feel like it majorly improved my recovery time. I literally have no pain since I left the hospital. I feel like I could go run a marathon, even though I know I shouldn’t.” The new system complements the hospital’s existing robotic surgery technology, which enables surgeons to make smaller incisions which may decrease recovery time. Dr. Gough and several other surgeons began training on the system in November. It will be used across many specialties, including general surgery, urology, gynecology and more. "It's not so different to learn, just a lot of refinements," Gough said. "I'm pretty excited, it's been a big team effort, and all came together quickly." This system enables surgeons to feel more and see more during procedures with a next-generation 3D display and image processing. The da Vinci 5 provides new surgeon controllers, making their movements smoother and more precise. In addition, the new system has innovative features that help streamline surgeon and care team workflow with an optimized user interface. “As a Level II Trauma Center, we care for everyone from complex traumas to major cardiac events and everything in between,” Porter said. “We look forward to using the new system to continue our mission to care for Wyoming.” As with previous da Vinci models, the da Vinci 5 can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally-invasive surgical procedures. Patient benefits may include reduced trauma to the body, shorter hospital stays, reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain and discomfort, less risk of infection and less scarring. “This system is a step forward in robotic surgery,” Gough said. “I am excited to be the first team in Wyoming to have this technology available to our patients.” We're always interested in hearing about news in our community.
