Quarterbacks in spotlight when No. 6 Miami visits SyracuseLANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Ekeler was concussed in the final minute of the Washington Commanders’ loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Coach Dan Quinn said he and general manager Adam Peters got to visit with Ekeler before he went to the hospital. A team spokesperson said the decision to transport Ekeler was made out of an abundance of caution. Ekeler, 29, was injured when he was tackled by Damone Clark and Nick Vigil on a kickoff return with 9 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Ekeler remained down on the field for some time being attended to by medical personnel, and players from each team knelt around him with their helmets off. Lineman Andrew Wylie was also concussed and fellow running back Brian Robinson Jr. sprained an ankle in Washington’s third consecutive defeat. Ekeler is in his first season with the Commanders after spending his first nine years in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

The promotion of a three-star general who was part of the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has been paused by Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, three sources familiar with the move confirmed to CBS News Saturday. Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue was slated to be promoted to a four-star rank and take command of the U.S. Army in Europe. However, he was not included in a batch of nearly 1,000 promotions that moved through the Senate Armed Services Committee this week despite receiving a Pentagon recommendation. Mullin has put a hold on the promotion. The intention is to allow for the new Republican-controlled Congress and President-elect Donald Trump to weigh in on the promotion given Donahue's involvement in the Afghanistan withdrawal, two sources familiar with the situation told CBS News. Behind the scenes, there is an effort underway by the Army and other allies to convince Congress to move forward and lift the hold, which appears to be politically motivated, sources said. During the campaign , Trump frequently mentioned his surprise that no officers were consequently fired by President Biden for the chaotic withdrawal. Military officers execute U.S. policy but do not create it. It was the Trump administration that in February 2020 brokered the deal with the Taliban to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan, but it was Mr. Biden who decided to execute that withdrawal despite the Taliban breaking the terms of that U.S. agreement. Donahue was the last U.S. soldier to exit Afghanistan in 2021. The U.S. evacuated about 125,000 people, including 6,000 Americans, over the course of its withdrawal, during which dozens of Afghans and 13 U.S. service members were killed in a suicide bombing outside Hamid Karzai airport in Kabul. The U.S. underestimated the speed with which the Taliban would capture Kabul and the well-documented U.S. logistical and planning failures have been a focus of multiple internal probes at the Pentagon, State Department, and in Congress. An extensive State Department report released last year found that "insufficient" planning, communication failures and an inability to grasp "the scale and scope of the operation" contributed to the chaotic operation. CBS News has reached out to Mullin's office but did not receive a response. It is not clear whether Trump is aware of the hold. Olivia Gazis contributed to this report. Major poll puts Ireland’s lead parties near neck-and-neckThe Detroit Lions will play without two high draft picks in rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while possibly getting back veteran Emmanuel Moseley against the host Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Arnold was downgraded Saturday from questionable to out because of a groin injury. He was limited at practice on Thursday and participated in a full practice on Friday. The Lions drafted Arnold with the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Arnold, 21, has started all 10 games and has 38 tackles and six passes defended. Rakestraw (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve after not practicing all week. He already had been ruled out for Sunday's game. Detroit picked Rakestraw in the second round (61st overall) out of Missouri. He has played in eight games and has six tackles. Rakestraw, 22, has played on 46 defensive snaps (8 percent) and 95 special teams snaps (42 percent). Moseley had full practice sessions all week and was activated from injured reserve on Saturday but was listed as questionable for Sunday. The 28-year-old is in his second season with Detroit and appeared in one game last season before going on IR in October 2023. He was placed on IR on Aug. 27 with a designation to return. Moseley played from 2018-22 for the San Francisco 49ers and had 162 tackles, four interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and 33 passes defensed in 46 games (33 starts). Detroit elevated linebacker David Long on Saturday for game day. Long, 28, signed with the practice squad on Tuesday after the Miami Dolphins released him on Nov. 13. He had started six of eight games for the Dolphins this season and had 38 tackles. In other Lions news, the NFL fined wide receiver Jameson Williams $19,697 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making an obscene gesture during a touchdown celebration in last Sunday's 52-6 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL Network reported Saturday. Williams, 23, scored on a 65-yard pass from Jared Goff with 12:55 remaining in the third quarter. --Field Level Media
Science fiction promised us robot butlers, but it seems they rather fancy themselves as artists instead. And who can blame them? On November 7, a painting of the mathematician Alan Turing by an AI-powered robot called Ai-Da sold at auction for a cool $1,084,000 (around £865,000). That's a more appealing lifestyle than having to sprint around a Boston Dynamics assault course. The Sotheby's auction house said Ai-Da is "the first humanoid robot artist to have an artwork sold at auction." It probably also set the record the most online grumbling about a painting, which is understandable – after all, shouldn't robots be sweeping up and making the tea, while we artfully dab at the canvases? The Ai-Da robot (seen here standing in front of her record-setting 'AI God' painting) uses a combination of cameras in her eyes, AI algorithms, and a robotic arm to make her artworks. (Image credit: Ai-Da) Naturally, the Ai-Da robot and its maker Aidan Meller don't agree that art should be ring-fenced by humans. As Marvin from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy once noted: "Here I am, brain the size of a planet and they ask me to take you down to the bridge. Call that job satisfaction? 'Cos I don't." But rather than rely on Douglas Adams to fill in the blanks, we asked Ai-Da and Meller what they'd say to those who are skeptical about AI-generated art – and what the landmark 'A.I. God' painting means for the future of creativity... The latest 'non-artist' Ai-Da herself usually prefers to let her art do the talking. When we asked her why she paints her answer was: "The key value of my work is in its capacity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue about emerging technologies". Fortunately, her creator Aidan Meller, a gallerist and veteran of the art world, was more forthcoming on why team Ai-Da doesn't think the painting or her work should be considered a threat to human artists. Peters’ push to turn Europe’s eyes southAccording to the party members, Duterte's statements against the First Couple had no place in democracy and at a "Bagong Pilipinas" that values accountability, peace, and order. Members of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) have renewed their support for President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos as they condemned the recent threat of assassination made against them. "We reaffirm our unwavering support for the administration of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, Jr., trusting that under his leadership, democracy, the rule of law, and national progress will prevail," they said. PFP members said this in a joint statement after Vice President Sara Duterte announced that she had contracted an assassin to kill the First Couple and House Speaker Martin Romualdez if she was murdered. "We, the members of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), strongly and unequivocally condemn any attacks against our democracy," the members said. "We reject all forms of violence, threats, or actions that jeopardize the safety of our people and the stability of our nation," they added. According to the party members, Duterte's statements against the First Couple had no place in democracy and at a "Bagong Pilipinas" that values accountability, peace, and order. "The statements made by Vice President Sara Duterte against the President and the First Lady are deeply alarming as they undermine the rule of law and foster a culture of lawlessness and impunity," they said. The PFP members urged the country's leaders to transcend personal and political interests, prioritize unity over division, and commit to fostering peace and moral recovery. "As public servants, we must exemplify humility, discipline, and accountability in both our words and actions," they said. "Now more than ever, we call on our fellow public servants and the Filipino people to stand in solidarity with the President and work together to safeguard the future of our nation," they added. During a Zoom presser, Vice President Duterte said she had already asked someone to go after the three in case something happened to her. "May kinausap na ako na tao. Sinabi ko sa kanya, 'Kapag pinatay ako, patayin mo si BBM, si Liza Araneta, at si Martin Romualdez.' (I have already talked to someone and told him that if I got killed, kill BBM, Liza Araneta, and Martin Romualdez). No joke. No joke," she said. "Nagbilin na ako, Ma'am. 'Pag namatay ako, sabi ko, ''Wag kang tumigil ha, hanggang hindi mo mapatay sila.' (I told him that if I died, don't stop until you have killed them). And then he said yes," she added. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin has tapped the Presidential Security Command (PSC) to take immediate, proper action on Vice President Sara Duterte's threat to the life of the First Couple. "The Executive Secretary has referred this active threat to the Presidential Security Command for immediate proper action," the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said. "Any threat to the life of the President must always be taken seriously, more so that this threat has been publicly revealed in clear and certain terms," it added. In a statement late Saturday afternoon, the PSC said it has already heightened and strengthened its security protocols following the Vice President's pronouncements. "We are also closely coordinating with law enforcement agencies to detect, deter, and defend against any and all threats to the President and the First Family," it said. The PSC said it was taking Vice President Duterte's remarks seriously and considering it a matter of national security. "Any threat to the life of the President and the First Family, regardless of its origin—and especially one made so brazenly in public—is treated with the utmost seriousness," it said. "We consider this a matter of national security and shall take all necessary measures to ensure the President's safety," it added.
