LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Jimmy Carter was honored with a moment of silence before the Atlanta Falcons’ game at the Washington Commanders on Sunday night, hours after the 39th president of the United States died at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia. Beyond being a Georgia native who led the country from the White House less than 8 miles (12 kilometers) away during his time in office from 1977-81, Carter was the first president to host the NFL’s Super Bowl champions there when he welcomed the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1980. Falcons owner Arthur Blank in a statement released by the team before kickoff said he was deeply saddened by the loss of his dear friend and mentor, calling Carter “a great American, a proud Georgian and an inspirational global humanitarian.” “He lived his life with great civic responsibility and took it upon himself to be the change he wished to see amongst other,” Blank said, recalling meeting Carter at The Home Depot. “President Carter’s kind and uniting spirit touched so many lives. He was a man of deep faith, and did everything with principal and grace, doing things the right way for the right reasons.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
Marcus Rashford takes up new sport to keep in top condition for Man UtdLOS ANGELES — The Dodgers’ signing of Blake Snell became official Saturday, adding the two-time Cy Young Award winner to front a starting rotation stocked with question marks. Snell, who will turn 32 next week, agreed to a five-year, $182 million contract that includes a $52 million signing bonus and $65 million in deferred salary. That deal was pending a physical which Snell passed. The 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner with the Tampa Bay Rays, Snell won the National League Cy Young in 2023 after going 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA for the San Diego Padres. He became a free agent last winter but stayed on the market well into March looking for a long-term deal that never materialized despite his Cy Young history. The Dodgers were involved with Snell at one point before he signed a two-year, $62 million contract with the San Francisco Giants that included an opt-out clause. He exercised that opt-out after going 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in an injury-interrupted season with the Giants. He had 145 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 104 innings. But he made just 20 starts due to two trips to the injured list with a groin injury (likely related to his late signing affecting his preparation for the season). The 20 starts were his fewest in a full season since his rookie year in 2016 (19 starts). Snell goes to the front of a rotation that includes a number of players returning from injury and/or surgery. Shohei Ohtani is expected to return to pitching after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in September 2023. But his return to the mound will be delayed by surgery on his non-throwing shoulder following the World Series. Yoshinobu Yamamoto finished the 2024 season healthy but missed three months with a rotator cuff strain. Neither he nor Ohtani will be asked to pitch on less than five days of rest and the Dodgers are planning to go with a six-man rotation in 2025. Tyler Glasnow’s 2024 season ended early with an elbow injury and his status for 2025 is uncertain. Tony Gonsolin will be returning from Tommy John surgery. Dustin May did not pitch in 2024 while recovering from his own elbow surgery and a torn esophagus. Emmet Sheehan is expected back at some point in 2025 after his Tommy John surgery. Clayton Kershaw is expected to re-sign at some point. But he underwent foot and knee surgeries in November and is not likely to be available for a full season. Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty are free agents. The Dodgers will start the 2025 season early again with another trip to Asia. They are scheduled to open the regular season with two games against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19 in Tokyo.

The Pittsburgh Steelers knew they needed a serious change on the offensive side of the football. After a dismal showing in the 2023 season, the front office made bold moves, bringing in Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith and reshaping the quarterback room with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields . While the offense has shown flashes of improvement in 2024, lingering issues, such as missed opportunities in the red zone and slow starts, have prevented the unit from reaching its full potential. One player feeling the impact of these changes is tight end Pat Freiermuth . Though his production hasn’t reached the level he or Steelers fans envisioned, his role within Smith’s system has highlighted his potential as a dynamic playmaker. Freiermuth’s route-running and reliability as a target have made him an integral piece of the offense, even as the team works through its growing pains. Despite the struggles, Freiermuth has expressed confidence in Smith's vision for the offense. He recently explained that the coordinator’s scheme and play-calling are not the root of the team's issues, suggesting that execution on the field remains the primary challenge. "It's execution, I believe in the calls," Freiermuth said. "I believe in the coaches. The players have got to do better. We'll be alright." Freiermuth’s comments reflect a belief in the system and a commitment to helping the Steelers turn things around as the season progresses. The goal has been to jump out to early leads and avoid playing from behind, but Freiermuth acknowledged that this goal fell short in the Steelers' 24-19 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football . "We put our defense in bad situations [against the Browns]," Freiermuth said. "That was the goal, to get up on them early. We didn't do that. We gave ourselves a chance at the end. It happens. We'll move past it." The Steelers' offense has shown flashes of promise throughout the 2024 season. When Wilson was named the starter, the offense came alive in ways Steeler Nation hadn’t seen in years, but there are still plenty of flaws to address. At times, the play calling has been questionable, and Smith has been working through some growing pains as he looks to get the offense fully up to speed. Freiermuth, a player with immense potential, has been held back by a struggling system and inconsistent quarterback play, with the exception of his rookie season when Ben Roethlisberger was under center. Now, with Wilson at quarterback and Smith—who has a strong track record of utilizing tight ends—working tirelessly to fix the offense, Freiermuth is working to become a key focal point. While it hasn't always been smooth sailing, there have been clear improvements, and Freiermuth is confident that with better execution, the offense will continue to grow. Steelers Need To Beat The Bengals To Get Bad Taste Out Of Their Mouth Freiermuth doesn't believe Smith is the problem. He’s happy in the system and eager for the offense to put together a complete game, showing Steelers fans exactly what they’re capable of. The entire team is focused on bouncing back against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. While it's not technically a must-win game, it certainly feels like one. A victory over the Bengals would help erase the disappointment of the loss to a struggling Browns team and get the Steelers back on track. According to Magalli Meda, an adviser to opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the residence has been without power for over a month. The Venezuelan government attributes the power cut to unpaid electricity bills. The opposition members have been residing there since arrest warrants were issued in March. While both President Nicolas Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez claimed victory in July's contested presidential elections, the opposition has provided detailed vote counts favoring their side, whereas Maduro has not. Tensions have escalated as Gonzalez is now in Spain, and Machado remains in hiding following her disqualification from the election. Argentina and Peru's support for the opposition's victory strained diplomatic relations with the Maduro government, leading Brazil to oversee both embassies. A recent arrest of an Argentine security officer in Venezuela has further fueled tensions, complicating the diplomatic standoff. By MIKE CATALINI, Associated Press TRENTON, N.J. — A large number of mysterious drones have been reported flying over New Jersey and across the eastern U.S., sparking speculation and concern over where they came from and why. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and U.S. Sen. Andy Kim have both gone out on drone hunts, hoping for answers. The FBI, Homeland Security, state police and other agencies are investigating. Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the drones don’t appear to be a threat to public safety, but many state and municipal lawmakers have nonetheless called for stricter rules about who can fly the unmanned aircraft — and to be allowed to shoot them out of the sky. Dozens of witnesses have reported seeing drones statewide since mid-November, including near the Picatinny Arsenal, a military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Murphy, a Democrat, said Monday that equipment supplied by the federal government has yielded little new information. He declined to describe the equipment except to say it was powerful and could even “mitigate” the drones, though he added that’s not currently legal on U.S. soil. The state tallied 12 sightings Saturday and just one on Sunday. Murphy urged Congress to give states more authority to deal with the drones. The growing anxiety among some residents is not lost on the Biden administration, which has faced criticism from Trump for not dealing with the matter more aggressively. White House national security spokesman John Kirby on Monday said the federal government has yet to identify any public safety or national security risks from reported drone sightings in the northeast, saying officials believe they were lawfully flown drones, planes or even stars. “There are more than 1 million drones that are lawfully registered with the Federal Aviation Administration here in the United States,” Kirby said. “And there are thousands of commercial, hobbyist and law enforcement drones that are lawfully in the sky on any given day. That is the ecosystem that we are dealing with.” The federal government has deployed personnel and advanced technology to investigate the reports in New Jersey and other states, and is evaluating each tip reported by citizens, he said. The FBI received more than 5,000 tips in recent weeks, he added, with only “about 100” deemed credible enough to require additional investigation. Authorities say they do not know. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI said they have no evidence that the aircraft pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” Speculation has nevertheless raged online, with some expressing concerns that the drones could be part of a nefarious plot by foreign agents. Officials stress that ongoing investigations have found no evidence to support such concerns, but U.S. Rep Chris Smith, a Republican, on Saturday echoed such speculation. “The elusive maneuvering of these drones suggests a major military power sophistication that begs the question whether they have been deployed to test our defense capabilities — or worse — by violent dictatorships, perhaps maybe Russia, or China, or Iran, or North Korea,” he said. On Monday, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder cast doubt on the idea that the drones are engaged in intelligence gathering, given how loud and bright they are. He said about 1 million drones are registered drones in the U.S. and about 8,000 flying on any given day. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh has said the aircraft are not U.S. military drones. Drones flying around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, forced base officials to close its airspace for about four hours late Friday into early Saturday, said Robert Purtiman, a base spokesperson. It was the first time drones had been spotted at the base, one of the largest in the world, and no sightings have been reported since, Purtiman said Monday. He said the drones had no impact on any facilities on the base. Trump has said he believes the government knows more than it’s saying. “Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!” he posted on Truth Social. Kim said he’s heard no support for the notion the government is hiding anything. He said a lack of faith in institutions is playing a key part in the saga. “Nothing that I’m seeing, nothing that I’ve engaged in gives me any impression of that nature. But like, I get it, some people won’t believe me, right? Because that’s the level of distrust that we face,” Kim said Monday. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut last week called for the drones to be “shot down.” Rep. Smith urged the Pentagon to authorize the use of force to bring down one or more drones to try to figure out who deployed them. The objects could be downed over the ocean or in an unpopulated area on land, Smith said Saturday. “Why can’t we bag at least one of these drones and get to the bottom of it?” Smith said.
