(AP) — Minnesota Vikings linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. has been placed on injured reserve after hurting his hamstring Sunday in a 30-27 overtime victory over the Chicago Bears. The move announced Tuesday means that Pace must miss at least the Vikings next four games. The Vikings also activated outside linebacker Gabriel Murphy from injured reserve and signed linebacker Jamin Davis off the Green Bay Packers practice squad. Pace, 23, had started each of the Vikings nine games this season. The 2023 undrafted free agent from Cincinnati had 56 tackles — including six for loss — and three sacks. Murphy, 24, signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent this spring. He was placed on injured reserve Aug. 27. Davis had joined the Packers practice squad Oct. 29 after getting released by the Washington Commanders a week earlier. Washington selected him out of Kentucky with the 19th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The 25-year-old Davis has 282 tackles, seven sacks, one interception, two forced fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in his NFL career. He led the Commanders with a career-high 104 tackles in 2022. The Vikings (9-2) host the Arizona Cardinals (6-5) on Sunday. Japan has started devising a strategy to strengthen its defense industry and promote exports of equipment, hoping to lay out medium to long-term goals for a sector that has struggled with small market scale and other challenges, government sources said Friday. The so-called national defense industry strategy may be compiled next year. The planning will involve not only the Defense Ministry but also others such as the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, making the process different from the strategy the Defense Ministry came up with in 2014 on defense production and technological bases. The new strategy is expected to encourage collaboration among businesses, government and academia by showing the future direction of the necessary technology and production bases, according to the sources. The move is in line with the 2022 National Security Strategy, which pledged to advance defense production and technology bases, describing them as "defense capabilities themselves." In the document, which was updated amid the security challenges posed by China and North Korea, the government also said the transfer of defense equipment and technology is "a key policy instrument" to create a "desirable" security environment for Japan and to provide assistance to countries facing the fear of the use of force. Based on long-term policy guidelines, Japan has gradually eased its strict rules on defense equipment transfers, which had been maintained under its war-renouncing Constitution. The government's focus on reinvigorating the domestic defense industrial base is a boon for the sector, which has faced low profitability with sales channels limited to the Self-Defense Forces as well as a series of withdrawals from smaller companies. To forge the new national defense industry strategy, the government also plans to set up a panel of experts to look into issues such as which industrial fields and technologies should be maintained and strengthened, and resilient supply chains should be built, according to the sources. The strategy is expected to be revised every five years. Major global powers have renewed their awareness of the importance of the resilience of their defense industries amid Russia's prolonged full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has underscored the importance of weapons and ammunition supplies. In January, the United States released its first Defense Industrial Strategy, which laid out long-term priorities to shore up its industrial base amid the military buildup seen by its adversaries. The European Union also announced in March its first-ever defense industrial strategy, setting goals such as procuring at least 40 percent of its necessary defense equipment in a "collaborative manner" by 2030.Two huge Japanese companies set to merge to take on growing Chinese rivalsNone

Everything we know about Christopher Nolan's 'Odyssey' filmJackson State coach TC Taylor said his team did nothing wrong, despite allegations it watched stolen practice film of Arkansas-Pine Bluff ahead of a game with the Golden Lions on Nov. 2. Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save The Southwestern Athletic Conference has cleared the Jackson State football program of wrongdoing in an investigation into theft of Arkansas-Pine Bluff practice video prior to the teams' game Nov. 2. Players from Jackson State allegedly watched the video in the week before Jackson State's 41-3 victory, and the allegation came to light when a UAPB player said a Jackson State player told him that Tigers defensive players had viewed the video, according to sources in an ESPN story. The SWAC released a statement Tuesday. “After conducting a comprehensive review of the information received, which included an IT analysis provided by DVSport INC, both oral and written statements, written statements from both institutions, individual interviews, along with the consultation of legal counsel, the Conference Office does not have enough substantial evidence to prove any allegations of unethical conduct by Jackson State University," the statement said. “The Southwestern Athletic Conference has officially concluded its investigation but reserves the right to review any additional information received on this matter.” After the UAPB player reported the allegation to UAPB coach Alonzo Hampton, the first thought was practice video had been accessed via UAPB's video software program by a former UAPB walk-on player who had been cut from the team in the spring. But Hampton said he’s not sure who did it. “We realize that our system was compromised,” Hampton said Monday. “I had coaching changes in the summertime, including our video guy, and we did not remove those young men. Someone used his account to log in and watch film. “Everybody knows it’s illegal to share your credentials. [The former player] said he didn’t do it. Well, someone logged in to his account. I’m not the judge or the jury. We know our system was compromised, and someone logged in and watched some film.” Jackson State went on to win the East Division title and will play Southern on Dec. 7 in Jackson, Mississippi, for the conference championship. Tigers coach TC Taylor said his program is innocent and is leaving the rest up to the conference office. “I’ll leave everything up to the SWAC offices to clear that up,” Taylor said. “I do want to say this: We don’t need to go that route in order to beat any football team. I’ve been doing this a long time and I pride myself on doing it the right way. I’m going to leave it at that.”

By MIKE CATALINI CHATHAM, N.J. (AP) — That buzzing coming out of New Jersey? It’s unclear if it’s drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, the saga of the drones reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: Lawmakers are demanding (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what’s behind them. Gov. Phil Murphy wrote to President Joe Biden asking for answers. New Jersey’s new senator, Andy Kim, spent Thursday night on a drone hunt in rural northern New Jersey, and posted about it on X. But perhaps the most fantastic development is the dizzying proliferation of conspiracies — none of which has been confirmed or suggested by federal and state officials who say they’re looking into what’s happening. It has become shorthand to refer to the flying machines as drones, but there are questions about whether what people are seeing are unmanned aircraft or something else. Some theorize the drones came from an Iranian mothership. Others think they are the Secret Service making sure President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster property is secure. Others worry about China. The deep state. And on. In the face of uncertainty, people have done what they do in 2024: Create a social media group. The Facebook page, New Jersey Mystery Drones — let’s solve it , has nearly 44,000 members, up from 39,000 late Thursday. People are posting their photo and video sightings, and the online commenters take it from there. One video shows a whitish light flying in a darkened sky, and one commenter concludes it’s otherworldly. “Straight up orbs,” the person says. Others weigh in to say it’s a plane or maybe a satellite. Another group called for hunting the drones literally, shooting them down like turkeys. (Do not shoot at anything in the sky, experts warn.) Trisha Bushey, 48, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey, lives near Round Valley Reservoir where there have been numerous sightings. She said she first posted photos online last month wondering what the objects were and became convinced they were drones when she saw how they moved and when her son showed her on a flight tracking site that no planes were around. Now she’s glued to the Mystery Drones page, she said. “I find myself — instead of Christmas shopping or cleaning my house — checking it,” she said. She doesn’t buy what the governor said, that the drones aren’t a risk to public safety. Murphy told Biden on Friday that residents need answers. The federal Homeland Security Department and FBI also said in a joint statement they have no evidence that the sightings pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” “How can you say it’s not posing a threat if you don’t know what it is?” she said. “I think that’s why so many people are uneasy.” Then there’s the notion that people could misunderstand what they’re seeing. William Austin is the president of Warren County Community College, which has a drone technology degree program, and is coincidentally located in one of the sighting hotspots. Austin says he has looked at videos of purported drones and that airplanes are being misidentified as drones. He cited an optical effect called parallax, which is the apparent shift of an object when viewed from different perspectives. Austin encouraged people to download flight and drone tracker apps so they can better understand what they’re looking at. Nonetheless, people continue to come up with their own theories. “It represents the United States of America in 2024,” Austin said. “We’ve lost trust in our institutions, and we need it.” Federal officials echo Austin’s view that many of the sightings are piloted aircraft such as planes and helicopters being mistaken for drones, according to lawmakers and Murphy. That’s not really convincing for many, though, who are homing in on the sightings beyond just New Jersey and the East Coast, where others have reported seeing the objects. For Seph Divine, 34, another member of the drone hunting group who lives in Eugene, Oregon, it feels as if it’s up to citizen sleuths to solve the mystery. He said he tries to be a voice of reason, encouraging people to fact check their information, while also asking probing questions. “My main goal is I don’t want people to be caught up in the hysteria and I also want people to not just ignore it at the same time,” he said. “Whether or not it’s foreign military or some secret access program or something otherworldly, whatever it is, all I’m saying is it’s alarming that this is happening so suddenly and so consistently for hours at a time,” he added. Associated Press reporter Hallie Golden in Seattle contributed to this report.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress as he accused the party of repeatedly disrespecting 'the architect of India's Constitution' B R Ambedkar during his lifetime and undermining his legacy after his death. Adityanath also claimed that India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was against Ambedkar's inclusion in the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. He made the remarks in a press conference at his official residence 5 Kalidas Marg, amid ongoing controversy triggered since Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Ambedkar in Rajya Sabha last week. He also attacked the Samajwadi Party, saying the same Congress approach of disrespect for Dalits and deprived was adopted by the SP. The chief minister, however, did not mention the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which also organised country wide protests against Shah's statement demanding his resignation. Flanked by ministers Swatantra Dev Singh and Asim Arun, Adityanath highlighted that the press conference's purpose as an effort to expose what he described as the "unethical" and "unconstitutional" conduct of the Congress and other opposition parties against Ambedkar. "Dr B R Ambedkar played a monumental role during India's freedom movement, the drafting of the Constitution and the early years of independent India. Despite facing numerous social hurdles, he earned the highest degrees in law, finance and economics. "His contributions to the nation remain unparalleled. Every Indian holds deep respect and reverence for him," the chief minister said. Adityanath contrasted the BJP 's reverence for Ambedkar with the Congress' history of disrespect. He detailed the BJP's efforts to honour Ambedkar's memory, including creating memorials at significant locations tied to his life, such as in Mhow, Nagpur, Mumbai and in London where Ambedkar studied. "Under the BJP leadership, whether it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government or Prime Minister Narendra Modi's, every effort has been made to respect Ambedkar's ideals. In contrast, the Congress has a long record of insulting him and marginalising his contributions," he asserted. The chief minister cited instances of the Congress' alleged apathy, including its initial reluctance to include Ambedkar in the Constituent Assembly and the Drafting Committee. He credited Mahatma Gandhi's intervention for ensuring Ambedkar's position. "During the UPA regime, the Congress displayed its malice when a textbook portrayed a derogatory cartoon of Ambedkar being prodded by Pt Nehru. It was only after widespread protests that the book was withdrawn and the then HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, had to apologise," Adityanath stated. He also accused the Congress of working to defeat Ambedkar in elections, including the 1952 general elections from Mumbai North and the 1954 byelections. "Even Pt Nehru campaigned against Ambedkar to ensure his defeat. The Congress consistently worked to keep him out of Parliament and to silence the voice of Dalits and marginalised communities," the chief minister claimed. Adityanath also criticised the Congress for refusing to bestow national honours upon Ambedkar during his lifetime. "It was only during a government with BJP support that Ambedkar was finally awarded the Bharat Ratna," he said. Adityanath further highlighted the BJP's efforts under Modi's leadership to fulfil Ambedkar's vision through initiatives benefiting Dalits and marginalised communities. He reiterated the BJP's dedication to preserving Ambedkar's legacy and ideals while accusing the Congress of continued disrespect and divisive politics. Attacking the SP, he said, "In 2012, the then SP chief minister talked about demolishing memorials. In Kannauj the name of Dr Ambedkar was removed from the medical college and the same was done in Saharanpur medical college. Names of districts were changed showing SP's hatred for Dalits and deprived sections," he added. Defending Union Minister Amit Shah, Adityanath said a portion of his statement was shown and hue and cry has been created by these parties (Congress and SP) to hide their misdeeds. He asked the Congress whether the attack on BJP MPs was constitutional. "Was pushing away an elderly (MP) constitutional? Was tearing bills on SC/ST and women's interest constitutional?" He said the Congress and the SP should apologise to the people of the country for, what he said, creating schism of hatred in the country. PTI Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . Netanyahu says he supports proposed ceasefire with Lebanon's Hezbollah JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will recommend his Cabinet adopt a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, as Israeli warplanes struck across Lebanon, killing at least 23 people. The Israeli military also issued a flurry of evacuation warnings — a sign it was aiming to inflict punishment on Hezbollah down to the final moments before any ceasefire takes hold. For the first time in the conflict, Israeli ground troops reached parts of Lebanon’s Litani River, a focal point of the emerging deal. In a televised statement, Netanyahu said he would present the ceasefire to Cabinet ministers later on Tuesday, setting the stage for an end to nearly 14 months of fighting. Trump's sharp tariff hikes could speed up China's shift to new markets and offshore factories YIWU, China (AP) — U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to sharply raise tariffs on all Chinese imports and close some loopholes Chinese exporters currently use to sell their products more cheaply in the U.S. If enacted, his plans would likely raise prices in America and squeeze sales and profit margins for Chinese exporters. Smaller Chinese companies like those in Yiwu — an eastern Chinese city that is home to the world’s largest wholesale market — are bracing for the impact. Exporters are maneuvering to cope with the potential tariffs by becoming less reliant on the American market and selling more elsewhere. Some are moving production to Southeast Asia and elsewhere to avoid the duties. Mexico suggests it would impose its own tariffs to retaliate against any Trump tariffs MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own, after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican goods if the country doesn’t stop the flow of drugs and migrants across the border. Sheinbaum says she is willing to engage in talks on the issues, but said drugs were a U.S. problem. She says "one tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses,” referring to U.S. automakers that have plants on both sides of the border. Trump won about 2.5M more votes than in 2020, some in unexpected places Republican Donald Trump’s support has grown broadly since he last sought the presidency. In his defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris, Trump won a bigger percentage of the vote in each one of the 50 states, and Washington, D.C., than he did four years ago. According to an Associated Press analysis, he won more actual votes than in 2020 in 40 states. Even with turnout lower, Trump received 2.5 million more votes than he did in 2020. Trump cut into places where Harris needed to overperform to win a close election, especially in swing-state metropolitan areas that have been Democrats' winning electoral strongholds. Now Democrats are weighing how to regain traction ahead of the midterm elections in two years. Childhood cancer patients in Lebanon must battle disease while under fire BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese families with children diagnosed with cancer are now grappling with the hardships of both illness and war. One family now has to drive three hours to reach the center where their 9-year-old gets treatment. It used to take just 90 minutes. Other families have been displaced by an intensified Israeli bombardment that began in late September. The Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon quickly identified each patient’s location to ensure treatments remained uninterrupted, sometimes facilitating them at hospitals closer to the families’ new locations. Doctors too have struggled during the war. Biden proposes Medicare and Medicaid cover costly weight-loss drugs for millions of obese Americans WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of obese Americans would be eligible to have popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound covered by Medicare or Medicaid under a new rule the Biden administration proposed Tuesday morning. The proposal, which would not be finalized until after President-elect Donald Trump takes office, could cost taxpayers as much as $35 billion over the next decade. It would give millions of people access to weekly injectables that have helped people shed pounds so quickly that some people have labeled them miracle drugs. New rule allows HIV-positive organ transplants People with HIV who need a kidney or liver transplant will be able to receive an organ from a donor with HIV. That's according to a new rule announced Tuesday by U.S. health officials. Previously, such transplants could be done only as part of research studies. The new rule takes effect Wednesday. It's expected to shorten the wait for organs for all, regardless of HIV status, by increasing the pool of available organs. The practice is supported by a decade of research, during which 500 transplants of kidneys and livers from HIV-positive donors have been done in the U.S. Surveillance tech advances by Biden could aid in Trump's promised crackdown on immigration President-elect Donald Trump will return to power next year with a raft of technological tools at his disposal that would help deliver his campaign promise of cracking down on immigration — among them, surveillance and artificial intelligence technology that the Biden administration already uses to help make crucial decisions in tracking, detaining and ultimately deporting immigrants lacking permanent legal status. One algorithm, for example, ranks immigrants with a “Hurricane Score,” ranging from 1-5, to assess whether someone will “abscond” from the agency’s supervision. Ukraine says Russian attack sets a new record for the number of drones used KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The Ukrainian air force says Russia launched 188 drones against most regions of Ukraine in a nighttime blitz, describing it as a record number of drones deployed in a single attack. It said Tuesday that most of the drones were intercepted, but apartment buildings and critical infrastructure such as the national power grid were damaged. No casualties were immediately reported in the 17 targeted regions. Russia has been hammering civilian areas of Ukraine with increasingly heavy drone, missile and glide bomb attacks since the middle of the year. The Russian Defense Ministry, meanwhile, issued a rare official acknowledgement of its assets being hit on its own soil by U.S.-made longer-range missiles that the U.S. recently authorized Ukraine to use. UK Supreme Court hears landmark legal challenge over how a 'woman' is defined in law LONDON (AP) — The U.K. Supreme Court has begun hearing a legal challenge focusing on the definition of “woman” in a long-running dispute between a women’s right campaign group and the Scottish government. Five judges at Britain’s highest court are considering a case which seeks to clarify whether a trans person with a gender recognition certificate that recognizes them as female can be regarded as a woman under equality law. While the case centers on Scottish law, the women's campaign group bringing the challenge has said its outcome could have U.K.-wide consequences for sex-based rights as well as everyday single-sex services such as toilets and hospital wards.ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Senate Republicans recommended on Friday that the state write laws banning transgender girls and women from participating in high school and college sports, setting the stage for action in the 2025 legislative session. The vote by a committee that was studying the issue is hardly a surprise. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones — a possible Republican contender for governor in 2026 — announced almost identical goals at the panel's first meeting in August . It’s an issue that’s already been addressed in Georgia. Legislators in 2022 empowered the Georgia High School Association to regulate transgender students' participation in sports. The association, which regulates sports and activities for all public schools and some private schools, then banned transgender boys and girls from playing on the school sports teams matching their gender identity. Jones and others argue that doesn't go far enough and that lawmakers themselves need to act. It's a sign Republicans believe there is more political gain in fears about transgender women playing women’s sports or using women’s bathrooms. At least 26 mostly Republican states have passed laws or rules to restrict transgender girls from participating high school sports and, in some cases, transgender women from college sports , according to the Movement Advancement Project, a gay rights group. In Georgia, additional action appears more likely now after House Speaker Jon Burns and Gov. Brian Kemp, both Republicans, have voiced support for further legislation. Jeff Graham, executive director of the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Georgia Equality, said his group is playing defense, concerned about the possibility of other bills that could further restrict gender-affirming care or ban transgender people from using public bathrooms that match their gender identity. “We’re expecting that it’ll be at least what we saw in 2023 and 2024, with the number of bills and more than likely laws,” Graham told reporters Friday. But Burns, from Newington, has said he's not interested in other bills dealing with transgender people besides those dealing with girls' and women's sports. Republican State Sen. Greg Dolezal, of Cumming, who led the Senate study committee, said Friday that he, too, is not interested in a broader bill regulating bathroom usage, although his committee recommended that schools that host sporting events require athletes to use locker rooms based on their assigned sex at birth. Dolezal said senators would seek to write legislation that regulated public schools and colleges, as well as private institutions that compete against public schools and colleges. The committee also recommends that people be able to sue or file grievances if schools break the rules, and that state money be withheld from schools that break the rules. Supporters of more action have focused on the 2022 NCAA women’s swimming championships at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, where Lia Thomas, a transgender woman, swam for the University of Pennsylvania and won the 500-meter freestyle . The NCAA has since revised its policy on transgender women’s participation, saying it will follow the rules of respective athletics federations. World Aquatics, the swimming governing body, banned transgender women who have been through male puberty from competing in women’s races. That means Thomas wouldn’t be allowed to swim in NCAA events today. “My basic contention that this is a solution in search of a problem remains,” Graham said. He said he fears that many people who oppose laws that seek to restrict transgender people will be afraid to testify and lobby at the Georgia Capitol, citing assault charges against a man accused of shaking U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace in a Capitol office building in Washington, D.C. Dolezal repeatedly tried to turn down the emotional temperature of the issue on Friday. “I think that there’s a group of people that wants to be respected and I think that they deserve respect,” Dolezal told reporters. “But I also think that you can be respectful, but also recognize that in the sporting arena, fairness and competition is important.”

US-Pakistan ties have historically been marked by distrust, intermittent strategic alliances and periods of relative indifference. President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration will take office next month but it's already sparked fresh speculation on how the Republican-led government may recalibrate the approach to Islamabad after years of indifference during Joe Biden's administration. Richard Grenell, Trump's newly appointed envoy for special missions, has been at the forefront of the rhetoric through his words of support for imprisoned former Prime Minister . Statements from Grenell, primarily on social media platform X, are causing a stir among Pakistan's governing elite. Privately, several leaders from Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party told Middle East Eye that the expectation of potential support from the incoming Trump administration has put pressure on the Pakistani government and its military. "Several factors, including the persistent protests by party supporters and fears of external pressure from the incoming US administration, amplified by the efforts of the party's overseas chapter in the US, have compelled the government to initiate meaningful dialogue with us," said a PTI core committee member in the capital Islamabad, who requested anonymity to speak freely. On Monday, the first formal meeting between a government-appointed committee and PTI representatives took place in Islamabad, signalling a potential shift in the political deadlock. The stir was triggered by posts where Grenell criticised Pakistan's treatment of Khan, who was ousted in April 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence vote following a fallout with the country's influential military. On 26 November, Grenell "Release Imran Khan!" in response to a violent crackdown in Islamabad against PTI supporters demanding Khan's release. Khan's legal troubles, resulting in over a year of incarceration and a crackdown on his party supporters, remains a contentious issue in Pakistan's fragile democracy. Initially drawing limited attention, Grenell's statement gained momentum after Trump announced Grenell's role as special envoy for global missions on 15 December. PTI supporters amplified Grenell's message, deepening the debate over his influence. Geo News, a major Pakistani channel often aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government, ignited further controversy by introducing Grenell's sexual orientation into the discussion. A headline on X read, "Trump appoints homosexual Richard Grenell as special envoy", prompting Grenell to reaffirm his stance on 16 December. He , "I'll say it again. Free Imran Khan", highlighting the traction his original tweet, viewed 12 million times, had received. Grenell's tweets were followed by a number of posts from lawmakers in the US, including Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna who filmed a video to elaborate on the former cricketer-turned-politician's plight. "This is bipartisan. We need to not recognise the rigged election in Pakistan and the new government. We need new elections in Pakistan and Imran Khan needs to be out of jail," Khanna said in a posted to X. On Monday, Grenell X's owner Elon Musk, to extend Starlink satellite internet services to Pakistan. His request touched a nerve there, given the lack of reliable internet access in a country grappling with censorship and a ban on X itself, largely tied to the crackdown on Khan's supporters, who wield outsized influence on social media platforms. Grenell, a seasoned foreign policy adviser, has held several critical roles during Trump's first administration, including US ambassador to Germany, Special Envoy for Serbia and Kosovo Peace Negotiations, and Acting Director of National Intelligence. His actions now place him at the centre of an evolving narrative on US-Pakistan dynamics and Islamabad's democratic trajectory. In Pakistan, a widespread belief persists that Washington holds significant sway over the country's political landscape and its fortunes. Historically, the US has played a critical role in shaping Pakistan's foreign and security policies, a notion frequently echoed by political analysts. That belief was amplified when Khan, after his ousting, accused the US of orchestrating his removal - a claim that resonated strongly with his supporters. Now, with Trump re-entering the political arena, many of Khan's followers are hopeful that American influence could extend to advocating for Khan's release from jail, further fuelling perceptions of US involvement in Pakistan's domestic affairs. Although the PTI leadership has not officially commented on Grenell's tweets supporting Khan, many leaders and analysts believe that remarks from a close confidant of Trump could signal a shift in Khan's fortunes after Trump assumes office on 20 January. Following Trump's victory in the US presidential election in Noember, a from Khan's official X account congratulated him, acknowledging the American people's will "held against all odds". The tweet added: "We hope he will push for peace, human rights, and democracy globally." Khan, currently in jail, has his official X account managed by party representatives. However, PTI leadership, including Khan's sister Aleema, has vehemently rejected the notion that the party is relying on Trump for Khan's release. "Are we slaves? Is Trump our Abba [father]? Are we a US colony?" Aleema responded sharply last month to journalists suggesting PTI leaders were pinning hopes on Trump's victory as a pathway for Khan's release. Aleema and other leaders said that the PTI is pursuing its struggle through state institutions, like the judiciary and parliament, while also exercising its right to peaceful protests. But the political climate grew more tense when, on Sunday, a military court sentenced 25 PTI activists to rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in the 9 May riots, which included attacks on military installations. The move drew a sharp response from the US State Department on Tuesday, expressing "deep concerns" over the use of military courts, citing concerns over their lack of judicial independence, transparency and due process. The role of Pakistan's diaspora in shaping political narratives has never been more evident, experts say. Recent tweets by Grenell highlight the growing prominence of this community in the context of Pakistan's ongoing political tensions. Grenell's social media activity aligns with the "battles of hopes" between Pakistan's military and the PTI, analysts suggest. 'PTI is working to instill hope in its supporters, suggesting that Khan's release could be facilitated after Trump takes office' "The military is actively trying to quash any hope among PTI supporters regarding Imran Khan's release, emphasising that he will face punishment for allegedly inciting last year's violence and corruption charges," Qamar Cheema, executive director at the Sanober Institute, an Islamabad-based think tank specialising in foreign affairs, told MEE. "Meanwhile, PTI is working to instill hope in its supporters, suggesting that Khan's release could be facilitated after Trump takes office." Grenell's social media activity has increasingly focused on Pakistan, sparking discussions about the influence of PTI supporters abroad. "His tweets are a testament to the connectivity and influence of Pakistan's diaspora, which predominantly aligns with PTI," said Fayaz Naich, a Pakistani journalist, currently based in Washington DC, who studies Pakistan-US ties extensively. Although Trump himself has refrained from commenting on Pakistan's internal affairs, Grenell's interactions with Pakistani diaspora bodies, such as the Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee, underscore the diaspora's growing political clout. Pakistani Americans have the greatest name for their PAC. "Grenell's tweets reflect his proximity to PTI supporters," said Ayesha Siddiqa, a Pakistani political analyst currently based in London. She pointed out that since 2001, the Pakistani diaspora in the US has evolved into a politically engaged and influential community. "Most of the diaspora are well-off professionals or entrepreneurs, part of the post-9/11 generation whose identity remains deeply tied to Pakistan," she noted. "This demographic has not only maintained strong connections with Pakistan but has also actively engaged in its political discourse." Grenell's recent tweets, while ostensibly personal, carry the implicit weight of his association with Trump, which could have a tangible impact on Pakistan's political landscape. Experts suggest these remarks hint at enduring complexities in US-Pakistan relations under the incoming administration, echoing the unpredictable nature of Trump's foreign policy during his first term. Trump's relationship with Pakistan was marked by volatility. In January 2018, he Pakistan of giving the US "nothing but lies and deceit" while harbouring "terrorists". However, ties improved after Khan's election in July that year, with both leaders finding common ground on Afghanistan peace talks. "Trump's foreign policy has always been transactional," said a senior official in Pakistan's foreign ministry, noting that Trump's stance softened when cooperation in Afghanistan served US interests. The official added that Grenell's tweets blur the lines between public posturing and actual policy, a hallmark of Trump-era diplomacy. Cheema suggested Grenell's tweets could be part of a broader public relations campaign. "Typically, serious concerns are communicated through formal statements, not informal tweets," he told MEE, emphasising that official statements from institutions like the US State Department or Department of Defense carry far more weight. "In Grenell's case, the series of tweets appears informal, reflecting a certain lack of seriousness," he said. Despite this, Siddiqa argued Grenell's comments should not be dismissed outright. She stated that Pakistan's global image is already under scrutiny, with recent concerns from the UK, US and European Union over the trials of PTI supporters in military courts reinforcing perceptions of undemocratic governance. As Grenell's tweets hint at potential shifts in US policy, experts agree that any future Trump administration would inherit a strained US-Pakistan relationship shaped by counterterrorism concerns, economic challenges and regional politics. Last week, the United States announced it was imposing new sanctions related to Pakistan's long-range ballistic missile programme, including the state-owned defence agency that oversees the programme. But Pakistan's geopolitical relevance remains a topic of debate. While some argue its strategic importance has diminished after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, others point to its location bordering China, India, Iran and Afghanistan as evidence of its ongoing significance. Naich said that a Trump administration would likely focus on pressing foreign policy challenges, including China, the Ukraine war and the Middle East crisis. "Pakistan will remain relevant in US foreign affairs, largely due to its ties to China and Iran," he said.Chiefs head to Pittsburgh on Christmas hoping to lock up the top seed in the AFCAustralia’s consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released its latest which provides a general overview of the current state of the National Broadband Network (NBN). As has been the case with previous reports (released every quarter) one of the key takeaways from this latest release is that users who connect via a fibre to the node (FTTN) connection type are more likely to experience what is known as an underperforming service, compared to those on fibre to the premises (FTTP) connection types. FTTP connections are capable of supporting the with gigabit download speeds. The findings highlight the attractiveness of NBN Co’s program, which is currently available for approximately 80% of the fixed-line network around the country. NBN Co recently said 90% of the fixed-line network – around 10 million homes – will be able to . Numbers don't lie Overall, all 11 internet service providers (ISPs) monitored in the ACCC’s report achieved close to, or exceeded, 100% of advertised plan speeds across all hours of the day, including busier evening hours of 7pm to 11pm. However, when underperforming services are separated, it doesn’t make for quite as impressive reading. The ACCC’s report says “underperforming services represented 3.0% of the 1181 NBN services tested.” While this might not seem like a high figure, the report also found that “FTTN services made up 89% of underperforming NBN services, and NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans accounted for 94% of the underperforming services.” In fact, it was also found that customers connected via FTTN on an NBN 50 plan achieved an average download speed 5Mbps slower than other technologies. The average download speed of NBN 100 plans was around 15Mbps slower than other technologies. What does this mean? In the grand scheme of things, a 5Mbps to 15Mbps difference likely won’t make a huge amount of difference in the real world. But if someone is paying for a service, they should reasonably expect to receive the speeds they’re paying for. It’s not an ISP’s fault that a customer may not achieve maximum plan speeds because of their equipment. FTTN connections employ fibre cabling from an exchange to a cabinet (node) likely somewhere on a street and copper cabling from the node to a premises. It’s this copper cabling that is the likely culprit for the slower speeds. In contrast, FTTP connections utilise fibre cabling throughout the entire process. It’s capable of supporting gigabit speeds – and up to by this time next year – and is less susceptible to damage or interference. The ACCC added “The number of fibre-to-the-node connections included in the Measuring Broadband Australia program has declined over time due to many volunteers upgrading their connection to fibre-to-the-premises.” Although it did also stress that even with upgraded equipment, consumers need to ensure their in-home equipment – a modem and/or router – is up to the task of supporting faster speeds. Next steps The ACCC’s report makes it clear that FTTN connection types are inferior to FTTP. Fortunately, NBN Co’s free fibre upgrade program makes it easy to have the superior technology installed. The vast majority of NBN providers support the program and make it easy to switch. All you need to do is sign up for one of the and your ISP will take care of the rest. Pat Fallon (R-TX) and Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe got into a heated yelling match during a hearing Thursday on the two assassination attempts on President-elect Donald Trump after the congressman implied that there was a security lapse at a September 11 memorial service this year. During the final hearing of the House’s bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempts, Fallon displayed a photo of President Joe Biden and Trump standing at New York City’s Ground Zero during the ceremony: Fallon said that Rowe, who also attended the event, should have been standing near the president for security purposes. “Who is usually at an event like this closest to the President of the United States?” he asked, gesturing at the photo. “Were you the special agent in charge [SAC] of the detail that day?” “Actually, let me address this. ... Congressman, what you’re not seeing is the SAC of detail falls out of the picture’s view,” Rowe shot back, just before the tension bubbled over. “That is the day where we remember more than 3,000 people that have died on 9/11. I actually responded to Ground Zero. I was there going through the ashes of the World Trade Center,” the acting director continued, before he was cut off by an enraged Fallon. “I’m not asking that, I’m asking you, if you were ... were you the special agent in charge?” the congressman shouted into his microphone. “I was there, Congressman! I was there to show respect for a Secret Service member that died on 9/11!” Rowe yelled back. The screaming continued as the committee chairman banged the gavel to regain order. “Do not invoke 9/11 for political purposes!” Rowe shouted at Fallon. “I’m not,” the lawmaker shouted back. “You are, sir. You are out of line, congressman! Way out of line,” the security official argued. “Don’t try to bully me,” Fallon said, pointing his finger at Rowe, before accusing him of “endangering” the lives of Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris because “you put those agents out of position.” “No, I didn’t sir, and you are out of line,” Rowe jabbed, before the floor was given to Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL). According to an October interim report released by the House panel, the July assassination attempt against Trump at his Butler, Pennsylvania, campaign rally occurred after “stunning security failures” that were entirely “preventable and should not have happened.”Accurate Wealth Management LLC reduced its position in NVIDIA Co.
