NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana civil court judge on Monday halted state agencies' plans to forcibly clear homeless encampments in New Orleans. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Ethel Julien issued a temporary restraining order blocking state police and two other agencies from evicting homeless people from their encampments in New Orleans or seizing their property without following city laws and due process. Republican Gov. Jeff Landry had called earlier this month for the City of New Orleans to remove a large encampment before Thanksgiving and warned he would intervene if the city did not comply. “If a judge believes that people have a right to be on whatever public space they choose, maybe that judge should have them move into her chambers and courtroom," Landry said after the judge issued the restraining order Monday. Louisiana State Police spokesperson Sgt. Katharine Stegall said the agency’s legal team and the state Attorney General’s Office are reviewing the order. State police have “promptly halted activities” and are “complying with the restrictions” of the order, Stegall said. Landry and New Orleans officials have repeatedly clashed over how to address the issue of homelessness in the city. New Orleans City Councilmember Lesli Harris said Monday that directing more resources towards moving homeless people into stable housing was “infinitely more effective than punitive sweeps” of encampments. “Coordination between the government and service providers on the housing of people is imperative, and continuously moving people only makes it that much harder to house them,” Harris said. But the governor has pushed to clear homeless encampments. In late October, Louisiana State Police, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Department of Transportation and Development converged on a homeless encampment under a highway to remove and relocate dozens of people prior to pop star Taylor Swift’s concerts in the nearby Superdome. Some people who had been away at the time of the clearances returned to the area to find they had lost their personal property including family heirlooms, identification documents and medication, according to testimony in court documents. City officials and advocates for homeless people decried the evictions and said they disrupted ongoing efforts to secure long-term housing for these individuals because they became harder to locate. A judge later granted a temporary restraining order preventing more clearances but declined to extend it beyond early November after lawyers representing the state police indicated in court that removals tied to the Taylor Swift concerts had ceased. But on Friday, homeless people began receiving flyers from state police officers ordering them to leave their encampments within 24 hours, according to a motion for relief filed on behalf of two homeless plaintiffs by the Southern Poverty Law Center and two other legal groups. The planned sweeps preceded the Bayou Classic football game on Saturday between Southern University and Grambling State University at the Superdome. “Your presence is considered a violation,” the flyers stated, according to the motion for relief. However, they were halted by the new temporary restraining order. On Dec. 3, the judge is scheduled to deliberate on whether to issue a preliminary injunction against the three state agencies. “The vulnerable people with disabilities who make up the vast majority of people living in the street deserve to be treated with sensitivity and compassion,” said Joe Heeren-Mueller, director of community engagement for Unity of Greater New Orleans, a homeless outreach organization. There are about 1,450 homeless people in New Orleans and neighboring Jefferson Parish, according to a January survey by the nonprofit Unity of Greater New Orleans. More than that, George's addition was supposed to replace what James Harden once brought to the Sixers as an iso scorer. Thus far, the results have not been promising when comparing the two. Harden may not be the same player he was at the peak of his powers with the Houston Rockets, but he's still lethal enough in that department to still be considered one of the best isolation scorers in the NBA. In fact, Harden leads all NBA players in points scored in isolation with 131 points, according to NBA.com. With Kawhi Leonard out, the Los Angeles Clippers have asked Harden to shoulder the scoring load, and he's risen to the challenge. In that same respect, compare that to George, Harden's former teammate, and the results are not pretty. Paul George’s isolation scoring has also been putrid Again, George came to the Sixers with the reputation of a wing scorer. He has that reputation because he’s earned it from his time with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Clippers. However, he has not started the season well in isolation. George has scored 27 points in isolation in the eight games he’s played for the Sixers. It's, of course, worth noting Harden has played in 18 games, but the trends do not point to George matching Harden's impressive total with additional appearances. That is well short of what the Sixers wanted to see from George when they signed him. Seeing how much better Harden has been in that department makes it harder to stomach how underwhelming George has been as a player. The Sixers may have other scorers around him, like Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, but George was supposed to take the pressure off them and vice versa. At age 34 and with his injury history, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that George has declined a bit. However, his numbers tumbling to this extent is a major red flag that the Sixers may be unable to ignore if things don’t pick up soon. (NASDAQ: MARA) (“MARA” or the “Company”), a global leader in leveraging digital asset compute to support the energy transformation, today announced the closing on December 4, 2024 of its offering of 0.00% convertible senior notes due 2031 (the “notes”). The aggregate principal amount of the notes sold in the offering was $850 million. MARA also granted the initial purchasers an option to purchase an additional $150 million aggregate principal amount of the notes within a 13-day period beginning on, and including, the date on which the notes were first issued. The notes were sold in a private offering to persons reasonably believed to be qualified institutional buyers in reliance on Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”). With special counsel Jack Smith’s decision to drop his election case and classified documents appeal against President-elect Donald Trump, the soon-to-be 47th president’s legal woes appear to be mostly behind him. In the case, Smith had charged Trump in Washington over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and for his activity around the breach of the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. “Working with a team of private co-conspirators, the defendant acted as a candidate when he pursued multiple criminal means to disrupt, through fraud and deceit, the government function by which votes are collected and counted—a function in which the defendant, as President, had no official role,” Smith’s office wrote. Trump had pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing they are politically driven and designed to interfere with the Nov. 5 election. At the time, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said the brief was “falsehood-ridden” and accused Smith of being “hell-bent on weaponizing the Justice Department in an attempt to cling to power.” On Truth Social, meanwhile, Trump said the case would end with his “complete victory” during the 2024 election. “In ruling otherwise, the district court deviated from binding Supreme Court precedent, misconstrued the statutes that authorized the Special Counsel’s appointment, and took inadequate account of the longstanding history of Attorney General appointments of special counsels,” Cannon wrote at the time. Weeks later, Smith filed an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit to reverse her order, which Trump’s lawyers had opposed in subsequent court filings. BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo’s WNY Sophomore Externship Experience (SEE) program is set to return in 2025, offering paid opportunities for undergraduate sophomores from UB and across the region to gain hands-on experience with some of Western New York’s top companies. Designed to help students develop their skills, expand their networks, and deepen their understanding of professional opportunities in the region, the program aims to foster a new generation of talented individuals who can make a lasting impact on the local economy. The program is run by the Division of Student Life’s Startup and Innovation Collaboratory Powered by Blackstone LaunchPad (UB CoLab) at UB. Through the SEE program, participating students are matched with leading Western New York companies and organizations, where they can apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, explore career paths, and enhance their professional readiness. Each extern will receive a $4,000 stipend for the nine-week program, which will run from June 2 to July 31, 2025. Additionally, externs will earn one course credit through UB (pass/fail) and a micro-credential they can showcase on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes. The SEE program is supported by The Prentice Family Foundation and administered by UB CoLab, powered by Blackstone LaunchPad, with collaboration from a wide range of campus and community partners. “We were thrilled by the success of last year’s inaugural SEE program, which exceeded our expectations in terms of student engagement and employer participation,” said Hadar Borden, director of UB CoLab. “With more than 200 applicants and 47 students placed in externships across 25 host companies, the program demonstrated the immense value of exposing students to real-world opportunities in Western New York.” Borden adds: “This year, we are looking forward to expanding the program to include even more students, businesses and industries. It is an exciting time to grow this initiative and help connect our students with the workforce of the future while also showing them the incredible professional possibilities right here in our region.” The SEE program is open to all undergraduate sophomores who have completed their fourth semester by the spring of 2025. This includes students from UB, other Western New York colleges and universities, and those who graduated from a local high school. The externship is designed to be a part-time, immersive experience, with approximately 25 hours per week working with the host company and engaging in professional development activities. Externs will have the opportunity to engage in various professional development activities, including weekly meetups with fellow students, community-building events like Food Truck Tuesdays, and cultural experiences such as Shakespeare in the Park and an Explore Buffalo tour of Silo City. Last year’s program saw participation from students across a variety of majors, including arts and sciences, engineering, business, and health fields. The host companies and organizations in 2024 included ACV Auctions, Buffalo Zoo, Chautauqua Institution, M&T Bank, Kaleida Health, NOCO Energy Corp., People Inc., and many others across industries like technology, health care, finance and manufacturing. “UB SEE offers the opportunity to companies and organizations to apply and join this program as leaders in workforce development in Western New York,” said Borden. “Not only are we providing an opportunity for students at UB, and beyond, to get meaningful experience early in their college careers, we are working with reputable employers in our region to help bolster the workforce in the years ahead.” By participating as host sites, companies gain access to emerging talent and fresh perspectives, all while contributing to the growth of Western New York’s future workforce.
