Syria’s new administration is carrying out a security crackdown against what it has described as “remnants” of former President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, with operations under way in several parts of the country. The official Syrian news agency SANA reported on Saturday that authorities were conducting “a large-scale sweep operation” near the city of Latakia on Syria’s northwestern coast. The push — in an area where al-Assad enjoyed support from the Alawite community — came in response to “reports about [the] presence of elements linked to remnants of Assad’s militias”, SANA said in a post shared on social media. Reporting from the capital Damascus, Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra explained that the new administration said it is not targeting the Alawite community, from which al-Assad hailed. Instead, the authorities said the security operation has focused on soldiers and Syrian army officials associated with al-Assad and his brother, Maher al-Assad, a powerful former military commander. “They say that [they’ve] issued an ultimatum to those people to hand over weapons to the new administration,” Ahelbarra reported, adding that operations also were being carried out in Homs, Aleppo and on the outskirts of Damascus. The push comes days after 14 police officers were killed in what the authorities said was an “ambush” by forces loyal to al-Assad in the Tartous governorate, another area on Syria’s western coast. Interior Minister Mohammed Abdul Rahman had promised on Thursday to crack down on “anyone who dares to undermine Syria’s security or endanger the lives of its citizens”. Syrian opposition groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of the country earlier this month after a rapid offensive that ousted al-Assad after more than two decades in power. A political transition is under way, with Syria’s new de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa – who headed HTS and previously had ties to al-Qaeda – holding talks with a number of Arab and Western diplomats in recent days. Several countries have urged al-Sharaa to ensure that religious and ethnic minorities will be protected amid some recent tensions and fears that any unrest could negatively affect Syria and the wider region. “What happens next in Syria will not only have an impact on the Syrians themselves, but it could spread beyond the country,” said Al Jazeera’s Ahelbarra. “This is why people are concerned about what happens next.” Al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, met with a Bahraini delegation in Damascus on Saturday, as well as with a senior official from Libya’s United Nations-recognised government. “We expressed our full support for the Syrian authorities in the success of the important transitional phase,” Libyan Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs Walid Ellafi told reporters after the meeting. “We emphasised the importance of coordination and cooperation ... particularly on security and military issues,” Ellafi said, while the pair also discussed cooperation “related to energy and trade” and “illegal immigration”. Meanwhile, Lebanese officials and a war monitor said Lebanon expelled approximately 70 Syrian officers and soldiers on Saturday, returning them to Syria after they crossed into the country illegally via informal routes. Many senior Syrian officials and people close to the al-Assad family fled the country to neighbouring Lebanon after al-Assad was toppled on December 8. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based monitor, said Syrian military personnel of various ranks had been sent back via Lebanon’s northern Arida crossing. SOHR and a Lebanese security official told the Reuters news agency that the returnees were detained by the new Syrian authorities after crossing the border.63 creative Elf on the Shelf ideas for the 2024 holiday

Ange: I want to knock Pep, City off Prem summitLiverpool punish rivals’ errors with dominant win over Leicester to stretch leadIowa cornerback Jermari Harris has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season in order to prepare for the NFL draft, according to a report by 247Sports.com . The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. After missing the entire 2022 season due to an ankle injury, Harris was suspended for two games of the following season for his involvement in the gambling investigation into Iowa athletics. He later emerged as the Hawkeyes' top cornerback, earning the team's comeback player of the year award after compiling 42 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups. Harris will finish his college career with 105 tackles and eight interceptions. --Field Level Media
A 26-year-old pharmaceutical company employee in Mumbai was allegedly defrauded of Rs 1.78 lakh and coerced into stripping during a video call by cyber fraudsters posing as police officials. The incident, reported between November 19 and 20, involved fraudsters claiming to be Delhi Police officers who falsely accused the victim of being linked to a money laundering case involving businessman and Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal. The scammers, using multiple phone numbers, threatened the woman with arrest and demanded that she book a hotel room for questioning. During the video call, they tricked her into transferring Rs 1.78 lakh under the guise of bank account verification. The ordeal escalated when the perpetrators insisted on a "body verification," coercing the victim into undressing, reported India Today. Releasing the deception, the woman lodged an FIR on November 28. Mumbai Police have registered a case of extortion and harassment under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. Having overcome the early setback of conceding to Jordan Ayew, with even the travelling fans expressing their surprise they were winning away after taking just five points on the road this season, the home team had too much quality. That was personified by the excellent Cody Gakpo, whose eighth goal in his last 14 appearances produced the equaliser in first-half added time with the Netherlands international unlucky to have a second ruled out for offside by VAR. Further goals from Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah, with his 19th of the season, stretched Liverpool’s unbeaten run to 22 matches. For Leicester, who had slipped into the bottom three after Wolves’ win over Manchester United, it is now one win from the last 10 in the league and Ruud van Nistelrooy has plenty of work to do, although he was not helped here by the absence of leading scorer Jamie Vardy through injury. It looked liked Liverpool meant business from the off with Salah’s volley from Gakpo’s far-post cross just being kept out by Jakub Stolarczyk, making his league debut after former Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward was omitted from the squad having struggled in the defeat to Wolves. But if the hosts thought that had set the tone they were badly mistaken after being opened up with such simplicity in only the sixth minute. Stephy Mavididi broke down the left and his low cross picked out Ayew, who turned Andy Robertson far too easily, with his shot deflecting off Virgil van Dijk to take it just out of Alisson Becker’s reach. With a surprise lead to cling to Leicester knew they had to quell the storm heading their way and they began by trying to take as much time out of the game as they could, much to Anfield’s frustration. It took a further 18 minutes for Liverpool to threaten with Gakpo cutting in from the left to fire over, a precursor for what was to follow just before half-time. That was the prompt for the attacks to rain down on the Foxes goal, with Salah’s shot looping up off Victor Kristiansen and landing on the roof of the net and Robertson heading against a post. Gakpo’s inclination to come in off the left was proving a problem for the visitors, doing their utmost to resist the pressure, but when Salah curled a shot onto the crossbar on the stroke of half-time it appeared they had survived. However, Gakpo once again drifted in off the flank to collect an Alexis Mac Allister pass before curling what is fast becoming his trademark effort over Stolarczyk and inside the far post. Early the second half Darwin Nunez fired over Ryan Gravenberch’s cross before Jones side-footed home Mac Allister’s cross after an intricate passing move inside the penalty area involving Nunez, Salah and the Argentina international. Leicester’s ambition remained limited but Patson Daka should have done better from a two-on-one counter attack with Mavididi but completely missed his kick with the goal looming. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/IqmAsKylLR — Liverpool FC (@LFC) December 26, 2024 Nunez forced a save out of the goalkeeper before Gakpo blasted home what he thought was his second only for VAR to rule Nunez was offside in the build-up. But Liverpool’s third was eventually delivered by the left foot of Salah, who curled the ball outside Kristiansen, inside Jannick Vestergaard and past Stolarczyk inside the far post.
The Iowa Hawkeyes were hoping that they'd get their starting quarterback Cade McNamara back for their Week 13 contest against the Maryland Terrapins, but he ended up being ruled out for the game. And as a result, rumors began circulating that McNamara's career with the Hawkeyes was over. McNamara suffered a concussion in Iowa's 40-14 win over Northwestern back on Oct. 26th, and ever since then, he's been working his way back to action. While the initial expectation was that he could play against Maryland, the fact that he was mysteriously ruled out led to speculation about his future with the team. Unsurprisingly, the talented quarterback caught wind of these rumors, and decided to quickly shoot them down. Ahead of the Hawkeyes Week 13 action, McNamara shared a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which he rejected the notion that his time with the team is over. pic.twitter.com/h2hihIfOUA McNamara's message notes that while he was cleared to return to practice on Sunday, he had an "adverse reaction" that resulted in him not being cleared to play in live game action yet. McNamara cannot travel with the team either, so there are a couple of big reasons right off the bat as to why he cannot play against Maryland. However, McNamara made it clear that he's doing everything in his power to return to action, and that he was confident he'd be able to play in Week 14 against Nebraska. So with that in mind, the Hawkeyes will be hoping to beat the Terrapins before hopefully getting their top quarterback for a huge Week 14 clash with the Cornhuskers. © Julia Hansen/Iowa City Press-Citizen / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Assuming he does find his way back onto the field for Iowa, McNamara will be looking to get himself back on track, as he had an uneven start to the season. In his eight games, McNamara racked up just 1,017 yards and six touchdowns in the air, while also throwing five interceptions. With McNamara out again, Brendan Sullivan will draw the start under center for Iowa, and he'll be looking to get the team back on track after their 20-17 loss to UCLA back in Week 11. Kickoff for their clash with Maryland is set for 12 P.M. EST on Saturday, Nov. 23rd. Related: Fired College Football Coach Will Be With Historic Program This Weekend
American Airlines expands tech to curb line cuttingFans flocked to the reboot of Bullseye with Freddie Flintoff with the show being crowned ITV's most watched over the weekend. The remake of the classic darts contest saw former sportsman Fred take to the oche with a new set of contestants. And the Christmas special on Sunday brought in a huge 3.3million viewers, with many praising the cricketer's talents. Taking to Twitter /X, one fan pleaded: "This already deserves a new series commissioned. They haven’t messed with the original format whatsoever and it shows. Flintoff absolutely class too. Get it sorted ASAP please ITV ." A second added: "Hopefully they will make a new series out of it." Others declared the show a success and labelled Freddie a "great presenter", while there was also special praise for darts sensation Luke Littler. The teen whizz stunned as he through a perfect three darts with ease. It's thought Bullseye's final viewing figures could double or triple in total when catch up service ITVX's figures are incorporated. And now, it's claimed the show's bosses are under pressure to bring it back permanently. The game show was originally presented in the 80s and 90s by Jim Bowen. Former Ashes legend Freddie, 46, took over from the late comic's old role for the one-off Christmas special. However, it's though bosses are keen it will become a regular series in the future. When Freddie announced the role, he said: "I love the darts and Bullseye was one of my favourite shows as a kid. I can’t quite believe I’ll get to host this Christmas special," before repeating one of the former host's famous catchphrases: "You can't beat a bit of Bully!" The role was Freddie's first TV commission, besides his recent documentary Field of Dreams, since his horrific crash. The former cricketer and TV presenter nearly died during a horror crash in December 2022. The ex-England cricket ace was filming for Top Gear at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey when disaster struck. He suffered serious injuries after the Morgan Super 3 trike he was driving, alongside a member of the film crew, somersaulted and smashed into the track. His injuries included broken ribs and facial injuries, with the star needing to be airlifted to hospital. He stayed out of the spotlight since the crash but returned to TV in August for his Field of Dreams on Tour, where he helped coach an unlikely cricket team from Preston to tour India. * Follow Mirror Celebs on Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

The airline provided the aircraft in 2019 as part of a partnership deal, reportedly to boost its marketing efforts by associating with the superstar. Drake’s personal brand and influence extend far beyond music, making him a perfect ambassador for Cargojet. The era of “Air Drake 2” has begun, with the aircraft undergoing a fresh paint job (the third repaint since Drake acquired it) to mark its next chapter. According to Billboard , the redesign has been hinted on social media, teasing fans with behind-the-scenes glimpses of the creative process. While details of the new livery are being kept under wraps, Air Drake 2 appears to embrace a moodier aesthetic, with an overcast sky and striking lightning elements. In contrast, the original Air Drake design drew inspiration from the cover art of Drake’s 2013 album Nothing Was the Same, featuring a serene blue sky with fluffy white clouds. The evolution of digital art is deeply intertwined with advancements in technology, as tools like graphic design software, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI) become more sophisticated and accessible. Current Digital Art Trends NFTs and Blockchain Technology Perhaps one of the most significant trends in digital art is the rise of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). Operating on blockchain technology, NFTs have revolutionized how digital artworks are bought, sold, and owned. In 2021, high-profile NFT sales captured headlines, with digital artists like Beeple selling a single artwork for an astonishing $69 million at a Christie's auction. This trend has significantly impacted U.S. digital artists, providing them with new avenues for monetization and establishing their work in the traditional art market. As NFT marketplaces expand and evolve, artists continue to explore the potential of blockchain to authenticate digital creations and offer unique ownership experiences to collectors. Virtual Galleries and Online Exhibitions With the Covid-19 pandemic accelerating the shift to online platforms, virtual galleries and exhibitions have become more commonplace. Artists have adopted sophisticated digital tools to curate immersive experiences that replicate the feel of traditional galleries. Platforms like Spatial and Artland allow for interactive experiences, enabling artists to present their work to global audiences without geographical barriers. This trend is not only democratizing access to art but also fostering community engagement as artists connect with viewers in innovative, digital environments. Augmented and Virtual Reality Experiences The integration of AR and VR in the art world is pushing the boundaries of creativity. U.S. digital artists are increasingly using these technologies to create immersive installations that challenge traditional notions of viewing art. For instance, AR applications allow viewers to experience artworks in their own spaces, bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds. Meanwhile, VR provides entirely new environments for exploration, enabling artists to tell stories and engage audiences in ways that were previously unimaginable. Generative Art and AI Collaborations Generative art, where artists use algorithms and code to create outcomes, has gained traction in the digital art community. Artists are exploring the relationship between creativity and technology by collaborating with AI programs to generate artworks. This innovative fusion blurs the lines between human creativity and machine learning, challenging conventional artistic practices and raising questions about authorship and originality. American artists such as Refik Anadol and Mario Klingemann are at the forefront of this movement, creating stunning visuals that harness the power of AI to push the boundaries of artistic expression. Social Media as a Platform for Artists The role of social media in the promotion and dissemination of digital art cannot be overstated. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter have become vital tools for artists to share their work, connect with audiences, and build their brand. The dynamic nature of social media allows for real-time interaction and instant feedback, helping artists gauge public interest and evolve their practices. Moreover, social media influencers are increasingly collaborating with digital artists, amplifying their reach and showcasing diverse perspectives within the art community.
