Microsoft Issues Flight Simulator 2024 FixQatar tribune Agencies China’s top electric vehicle producer, BYD, gained market share as the world’s largest auto market recorded its fastest-growing month in 2024, setting the company up to surpass its global annual sales goal of 4 million units and overtake sector giants Ford and Honda. BYD has been on an extraordinary expansion this year, growing capacity and undertaking a massive hiring spree to turbocharge revenue that surpassed EV leader Tesla in the third quarter. Aided by robust sales in China, BYD is on course to top its annual sales target of 4 million vehicles, which would put it ahead of Japan’s Honda and Detroit-based Ford for 2024. The Chinese electric vehicle giant delivered 3.76 million vehicles in the first 11 months this year, including 506,804 units sold in November. Bolstered by strong sales led by a competitive lineup of models with its latest plug-in hybrid technology, BYD gained ground over rivals as China’s car sales grew in November at their fastest from a year earlier since January, thanks to government-subsidized auto trade-ins. The number of subsidized car trade-ins totaled more than 4 million as of Nov. 18, according to official data. Without such trade-ins, year-to-date car sales may have contracted versus a 4.4% increase for the January-November period, according to Reuters analysis based on industry numbers. As of last month, BYD’s share of the Chinese auto market, which makes up more than 90% of its total sales, stood at 17.1%, up from 12.5% in 2023, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In comparison, Volkswagen’s two joint ventures with SAIC and FAW Group took a combined 11% market share in the January-November period, compared with 14.2% last year. Copy 11/12/2024 10

Catch our special talk with Ajay Sadhotra, former Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, as he shares his insights and experiences in politics and governanceAttorney-General Mark Dreyfus has opted not to go as far as to label the Melbourne synagogue firebombing a terrorist attack, despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stating he believes it was an act of terrorism. Albanese told reporters in Perth on Sunday: “If you want my personal view, quite clearly terrorism is something that is aimed at creating fear in the community, and the atrocities that occurred at the synagogue in Melbourne clearly were designed to create fear in the community and, therefore, from my personal perspective, certainly fulfil that definition of terrorism.” Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus. Credit: Alex Ellinghausen Dreyfus was more conservative, saying while he thought the prime minister was “right”, he would defer the decision around the formal technical description to the police. He told ABC News Breakfast that the firebombing caused “distress and fear in the Jewish community in Melbourne”, but when asked if he believed it was an act of terrorism, Dreyfus avoided using the term. “I’ll be waiting to hear more from Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police after their meeting today,” he said. “I’m the minister for the Australian Federal Police. I think it’s always important that we let police do their work. We let Commonwealth agencies who are assisting Victoria Police in their work to do just that and let them make the announcements.” Dreyfus clarified that he thought Albanese’s comments yesterday were “right” because he was recognising the “fear and distress” Melbourne’s Jewish communities. “I feel the same set of emotions, he’s recognising that.” Dreyfus also noted that the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police will meet today, with further developments expected from the meeting. ANZ chief Shayne Elliott will announce his resignation this week after nine years in the job, according to The Australian Financial Review . ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott Credit: Arsineh Houspian The AFR said the announcement could come as soon as Monday. His exit would mean three of the country’s big four banks will have had changes at the top this year, following Westpac and NAB. Earlier this year, ANZ’s $4.9 billion deal to buy Suncorp’s banking arm was given the green light by Treasurer Jim Chalmers. ANZ has also been dealing with several internal issues – including a bonds trading scandal that is the subject of a regulatory investigation. The AFR reports that the bank is set to look externally for Elliott’s replacement. Voters have slashed their core support for federal Labor to a new low of 27 per cent amid a deepening dispute over the cost of living, backing the Coalition to deliver more help to households over the next three years. In a rebuff to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the latest Resolve Political Monitor shows that 56 per cent of voters have rejected his new message on the economy – “we have your back” – after years of pressure on family budgets. The survey also reveals that 59 per cent of voters believe they are worse off than when Labor came to power at the last election, with only 13 per cent feeling better off. Asked to name the party and leader most likely to make them better off over the next three years, Australians backed Dutton and the Coalition over Albanese and Labor by 36 to 27 per cent. Meanwhile, the latest Newspoll published by The Australian , also spelled trouble for Labor, with Albanese found to be the weakest prime minister Australia has seen in the 16 years the poll has tracked the “strong and decisive” rating. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is considered to be the stronger and more decisive leader, according to the poll. However, Albanese was still ranked as less arrogant than Dutton and remains the preferred prime minister. Read more of the latest exclusive polling here. With AAP Ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow on Sunday, Russian media reported, hours after a stunning rebel advance took over the capital of Damascus and ended the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. The Russian agencies, Tass and RIA, cited an unidentified Kremlin source on Assad and his family being given asylum in Moscow, his longtime ally and protector. The Associated Press was not immediately able to verify the reports but contacted the Kremlin for comment. RIA also said Moscow had received guarantees from Syrian insurgents of the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic posts in Syria. Assad reportedly left Syria early Sunday, and Syrians have been pouring into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire after a stunning rebel advance reached the capital, ending the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. AP Good morning and welcome to the national news blog from The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. My name is Josefine Ganko, and I’m at the helm of our live coverage for the first half of the day. It’s Monday, December 9. Here’s what you need to know this morning.
MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid conceded three goals in a Spanish league game for the first time this season but still managed to beat Sevilla 4-3 on Sunday with Antoine Griezmann's double helping to make it nine wins in a row for Diego Simeone’s in-form side. Third-place Madrid restored its three-point lead over fourth-place Athletic Bilbao, which beat Villarreal earlier Sunday. Rodrigo De Paul gave Atletico the perfect start when he lashed home a stunning opener in the 10th minute. However, goals from Dodi Lukébakio, Isaac Romero and Juanlu Sanchez put Sevilla 3-1 up early in the second half and Atletico, without the vocal support of some home fans in a dispute over tickets, seemed lost in an unusually quiet at Metropolitano Stadium. Simeone’s side, though, is known for its resilience and it was not long before the fightback began. Griezmann reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute and 17 minutes later, after Simeone made five substitutions in a quarter of an hour, Samuel Lino got the equalizer with a low shot from 30 yards. Griezmann himself got the winner in stoppage time to consolidate Atletico’s third place. The Madrid club now has 35 points, one behind city rival Real and three behind league leader Barcelona. “We struggled to get into the game,” Griezmann said. “We missed the support of the fans behind the goal. But in the end we managed to come back.” Athletic Bilbao consolidated fourth place with a comfortable 2-0 win over Villarreal, the team immediately below it in the table and one of its closest rivals for a Champions League spot. Aitor Paredes put Athletic ahead when he glanced home a corner kick in 14 minutes and Iñaki Williams made it 2-0 midway through the second half. It was the fourth consecutive league win for Athletic but the victory was marred by a silent protest from an organized fan group. The group refused to sing or chant in response to a rift between it and the club president, who reported threats to police earlier in the week. Several Athletic players expressed solidarity with the president and the team did not salute the fans behind the goal after the match. “It’s a very sad win and a time for everyone to pull together,” club captain Óscar De Marcos said in comments reported by newspaper Marca. “The silence was notable during the game but we need to keep doing our job.” Earlier Sunday, Real Sociedad won for the fourth time in a row, beating Leganes 3-0 at the Butarque stadium near Madrid. Three days after his extra-time goal gave Sociedad a 1-0 win at fourth-tier Conquense in the Copa del Rey, Brais Méndez scored again to give the visitors an early lead. Substitute Ander Barrenetxea’s first goal of the league season doubled its lead 10 minutes from time and then Mikel Oyarzabal added a third in stoppage time. It was only the fourth time in 16 matches that Sociedad has scored twice in a league game and the win lifted it into sixth, above Osasuna, which drew 2-2 with Alaves. Alaves took only 37 seconds for Kike Garcia to put the team ahead with a diving header. However, Ante Budimir and Rubén García scored early in the second half to put Osasuna in front before Kike Garcia got his second of the game to tie the scores at 2-2. The point was the first for new Alaves coach Eduardo Coudet but still leaves it in 15th place without a win in five games. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

In the weeks leading up to Donald Trump 's second term, it appears that Vice President-elect JD Vance is nowhere in sight. Instead, Elon Musk – the world's richest person and largest single donor to the Trump re-election campaign – is by Trump’s side at every turn. The pair have been keeping busy since the election. They’ve flown together on Trump’s private Boeing 757, nicknamed Trump Force One. The president-elect attended Musk’s SpaceX launch in Texas. And the X owner joined Trump for Thanksgiving at Mar-a-Lago , even appearing in a family photo. But Musk’s role isn’t limited to “first buddy.” As a member of his inner circle, major donor, and co-leader of the new Department of Government Efficiency , Musk’s role as enforcer and influencer for Trump is starting to take shape. Musk takes on Capitol Hill Musk made the rounds on Capitol Hill last week on behalf of his new boss, aggressively pitching ways the federal government can reduce its spending through the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a nod to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency that Musk promotes. Musk and fellow businessman Vivek Ramaswamy held a private meeting with Republican lawmakers to discuss ways they can slash government spending through DOGE. The task force will also be responsible for finding ways to fire federal workers, cut social programs, and slash federal regulations. Their visit to Capitol Hill also came with a warning to lawmakers – join Trump in making cuts or pay the price. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is leading the House working group for DOGE, told reporters after the meeting that Musk and Ramaswamy said they will have a “naughty and nice list” of lawmakers who support or vote against the spending cuts. Power of the purse Musk’s rise to prominence within the Trump campaign and the incoming administration was likely boosted by the amount of money he spent during the election. According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, Musk spent at least $277 million in political contributions to support Trump and other Republicans, making him the single largest donor of the 2024 election. Nearly $239 million of that total went directly to Musk’s personal super PAC, America PAC , which he quietly established in the spring. He used the PAC to spend $154.5 million on digital ads and get-out-the-vote efforts to support Trump and oppose Vice President Kamala Harris. The billionaire also donated another $20 million to a group that claimed Trump wouldn’t sign a national abortion ban, comparing him to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Musk said he plans to continue to fund and operate his super PAC, potentially using it to challenge Republican lawmakers during the midterms who don’t follow Trump’s agenda. Will Musk’s influence last? It’s hard to say. Trump previously joked that he “can’t get Musk out of Mar-a-Lago.” And NBC News reported that Musk’s constant presence is starting to strain longtime Trump advisors. But for now, as Musk joins in on phone calls with world leaders and travels abroad with the president-elect, it appears the billionaire will maintain his outsized role. Former Premier League official Mark Clattenburg agreed with both offside decisions in the second half of RB Leipzig vs Aston Villa, which saw Unai Emery's side denied a 3-1 advantage before they were pegged back and ultimately snatched victory late on. Villa 's latest European journey took them to Germany to face Leipzig . A John McGinn strike - with barely four minutes gone - was later cancelled out when Lois Openda capitalised on an Emi Martinez blunder. It set up a tasty second half and Emery turned to his weapon of choice in these scenarios - Jhon Duran. The Colombian had not scored since October 30, but first beat Peter Gulacsi with a long-range strike for 2-1, and thought he had made it 3-1 in the 58th minute. READ | I was chatting about Aston Villa at 35,000 feet with the most unlikeliest of people However, VAR Aleandro Di Paolo made use of semi-automated offside technology to review his goal. He found that the goal-scorer was in an offside position earlier in the goal-scoring move, so denied him his brace. "It's very, very tight on the first phase. It's okay on the second phase - because Duran's behind the ball when the pass is made, so they're going to look at first phase - is he ahead of the player?" ex-referee Clattenburg analysed while on duty for Amazon's Prime Video . On the offside verdict, he added: "My feeling is his foot is in an offside position." The lead was still with Villa at least - though that was only momentary. Openda assisted Christoph Baumgartner, who neatly hooked an equalising volley into the top left-hand corner of the goal. This time Openda was under scrutiny of the semi-automated offside, with Clattenburg stating: "This one certainly looked tighter than Duran's one. It looks like his feet are behind, but he's leaning forwards. "That could be what's either playing him on or offside." Clattenburg agreed as a decision was awarded to the home side moments later, with replays of the technology's interpretation showing only the Leipzig striker's lower arm trailing beyond Villa's last defender. Ross Barkley then struck in the 85th minute - albeit with the aid of a big deflection - to ensure a 3-2 win and much better footing to secure automatic knock-out qualification with two games to go.
All-star Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko will make his first start of the season Tuesday. Head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed after morning skate that Demko will be in net when the Canucks host the St. Louis Blues. The 28-year-old netminder from San Diego, Calif., last played on April 24 when the Canucks bested the Nashville Predators in Game 1 of a first-round playoff series. He suffered an injury to the popliteus muscle in his knee during the game and has been working his way back ever since. A number of factors led to Demko starting Tuesday, Tocchet said. “You want him to feel comfortable. You want to, obviously, communicate with him,” he said. “(Kevin Lankinen) was playing well, too. So there wasn’t a pressing issue to get him in. But we want to get him in. We’re excited. Obviously he’s a huge part of our team.” Demko had a 35-14-2 record with a .918 save percentage, a 2.45 goals-against average and five shutouts in regular-season play last year and played in the all-star game for the second time in his career. The veteran goalie is managing his personal expectations as he returns to game action, however. “I think it’d be foolish to say that I’m going to come back and be perfectly sharp and feel like I have my ‘A’ game in game one. Obviously, that takes a little bit of time,” Demko told reporters last week. “Just seeing game reps and things is kind of a last step of fully doing rehab. So I’m not really putting an expectation on that. “Obviously, the way Lanks has played kind of takes a little bit of pressure off of myself to come in and not feel like I have to save the world.” Demko returned to Vancouver’s lineup last week, backing up Lankinen for games against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canucks signed Lankinen to a US$875,000 deal during training camp and the Finnish goaltender has split the crease with Arturs Silovs this season, backstopping Vancouver to a 14-8-4 record. Lankinen has been “unbelievable” this season, Demko said. “It’s been really fun to get to know him and be able to watch him play,” he said. “It’s a challenging position he was put in, coming into a new team and being able to manage the workload that he’s been given.” Demko’s return to the crease should act as motivation for the Canucks’ skaters as the team takes on the Blues, Tocchet said. “I think, when you look at the way Demmer has worked hard to get back, a lot of lonely times by himself, it should give guys juice that you want to play well in front of him,” the coach said. You’d be crazy not to. “Maybe there’s extra shot blocking, situations to get the puck in deep when we’re tired to give him a break, things like that. I think we need to do that tonight for him.”
