The young Belgian’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed across Europe, with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all vying for his signature. The aforementioned report adds Tottenham scouts have not been disappointed when watching Smets in action this season. Smets is yet to become a household name in European football but his playing style has already drawn comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain skipper Marquinhos . The 20-year-old has been making waves in the Belgium top flight, which is why it is not surprising to see several clubs scouting him. The defender may still be very young but he has already made a combined 74 appearances for Genk and Sint-Truidense. In addition, he won his first cap for Belgium during the November international break—getting 45 minutes under his belt in the shock loss to Israel in the UEFA Nations League.
