WASHINGTON (AP) — Micah Peavy’s 24 points helped Georgetown defeat Saint Francis (PA) 82-65 on Saturday. Peavy added six assists and three steals for the Hoyas (4-1). Jayden Epps added 23 points while going 7 of 17 from the floor, including 4 for 12 from 3-point range, and 5 for 5 from the line and also had six rebounds and three steals. Malik Mack shot 4 of 9 from the field and 3 for 4 from the line to finish with 11 points. The Red Flash (1-5) were led by Bobby Rosenberger III, who posted 20 points and seven rebounds. Riley Parker added 20 points for Saint Francis (PA). ___ The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — PGA Tour rookie Patrick Fishburn played bogey-free for an 8-under 64 for his first lead after any round. Joel Dahmen was 10 shots behind and had a bigger cause for celebration Friday in the RSM Classic. Dahmen made a 5-foot par putt on his final hole for a 2-under 68 in tough conditions brought on by the wind and cold, allowing him to make the cut on the number and get two more days to secure his PGA Tour card for next year. He is No. 124 in the FedEx Cup. "I still got more to write this weekend for sure," said Dahmen, who recently had said his story is not yet over. "But without having the opportunity to play this weekend, my story would be a lot shorter this year." Fishburn took advantage of being on the easier Plantation course, with trees blocking the brunt of the wind and two additional par 5s. He also was helped by Maverick McNealy, who opened with a 62 on the tougher Seaside course, making two bogeys late in his round and having to settle for a 70. People are also reading... Fishburn, who already has locked up his card for next year, was at 11-under 131 and led McNealy and Lee Hodges (63) going into the weekend. Michael Thorbjornsen had a 69 and was the only player who had to face Seaside on Friday who was among the top five. What mattered on this day, however, was far down the leaderboard. The RSM Classic is the final tournament of the PGA Tour season, and only the top 125 in the FedEx Cup have full status in 2025. That's more critical than ever with the tour only taking the top 100 for full cards after next season. Players like Dahmen will need full status to get as many playing opportunities as they can. That explains why he felt so much pressure on a Friday. He didn't make a bogey after his opening hole and was battling temperatures in the low 50s that felt even colder with the wind ripping off the Atlantic waters of St. Simons Sound. He made a key birdie on the 14th, hitting a 4-iron for his second shot on the 424-yard hole. Dahmen also hit wedge to 2 feet on the 16th that put him on the cut line, and from the 18th fairway, he was safely on the green some 40 feet away. But he lagged woefully short, leaving himself a testy 5-footer with his job on the line. "It was a great putt. I was very nervous," Dahmen said. "But there's still work to do. It wasn't the game-winner, it was like the half-court shot to get us to halftime. But without that, and the way I played today, I wouldn't have anything this weekend." His playing partners weren't so fortunate. The tour put three in danger of losing their cards in the same group — Zac Blair (No. 123), Dahmen and Wesley Bryan (No. 125). The cut was at 1-under 141. Blair and Bryan came to the 18th hole needing birdie to be assured of making the cut and both narrowly missed. Now they have to wait to see if anyone passes them, which is typically the case. Thorbjornsen in a tie for fourth and Daniel Berger (66 at Plantation) in a tie for 17th both were projected to move into the top 125. Dahmen, indeed, still has work to do. Fishburn gets a weekend to see if he can end his rookie year with a win. "I've had a lot of experience playing in cold growing up in Utah, playing this time of year, kind of get used to playing when the body's not moving very well and you've got to move your hands," said Fishburn, who played college golf at BYU. "Just pretty happy with how I played." Ludvig Aberg, the defending champion and No. 5 player in the world competing for the first time in more than two months because of knee surgery, bounced back with a 64 on Plantation and was back in the mix. Aberg played with Luke Clanton, the Florida State sophomore who looks like he belongs each week. Clanton, the No. 1 player in the world amateur ranking who received a sponsor exemption, had a 65 at Plantation and was two shots off the lead. Clanton already has a runner-up and two other top 10s since June. "Playing with him, it's pretty awesome to watch," Clanton said. "We were kind of fanboying a little it. I know he's a really good dude but to be playing with him and to see what he's done over the last couple years, it's pretty inspirational." Be the first to know
Scott Parker 's Burnley are set to host strugglers Coventry City at Turf Moor on Tuesday in their 17th match of the Championship season. The Clarets enjoyed another victory on the weekend after defeating Bristol City 1-0 on Saturday and are fourth in the second tier with 30 points, while their opponents are 17th with 17 points and are yet to appoint a permanent manager after sacking Mark Robins on November 7. © Imago The hosts played out an even first half against Bristol despite taking the lead thanks to Jaidon Anthony in the 23rd minute, but Burnley's quality ultimately shone through, with the team limiting Bristol to just one open-play shot in the second half. However, Parker's side were forced deeper towards the end of the match, and the manager spoke of how he was relieved by the win, saying: "For 20 minutes in the second half we were as good as we want to be and had great chances to extend our lead. But there was a clear momentum swing after we missed the best of them and we ended up camped in our own half." The Clarets are just two points from the two automatic promotion spots at the top of the table, and are four points ahead of seventh-placed Watford, who are one place from the playoffs. Burnley have scored 19 goals and conceded six times in the Championship, and these are the division's joint 10th best offensive and best defensive records. Parker's team have encountered goalscoring issues in recent weeks, with the club having netted just three times in their last six games, a period in which they drew three, won two and lost one. The hosts' form at home has been strong considering they are unbeaten at Turf Moor in 2024-25, winning four and drawing three, though their victory against Bristol was their first in the past three matches. © Imago As for Coventry, they drew 2-2 with third-placed Sheffield United on November 23, though they may feel they could have earned more than a point given the Blades were reduced to 10 men in the 44th minute. To caretaker boss Rhys Carr 's credit, the draw was the second time they have held a team in the top three to a stalemate in their last two outings having also drawn 2-2 with second-placed Sunderland on November 9. Former Derby County, Chelsea and Everton head coach Frank Lampard appears to be leading the race to replace Robins , but with no official confirmation regarding his appointment, Carr is set to lead the team out on Tuesday. The Sky Blues picked up just eight points in their first 10 league games of the season, but they are in good form having picked up nine points in their last six matches, winning two, drawing three and only losing one. However, while Carr will be pleased that his players are unbeaten in their three most recent away fixtures in the Championship, he will no doubt be concerned that his team were defeated in five and drew three of their prior eight outings on the road. © Imago Burnley have an extensive injury list and will be without the likes of Aaron Ramsey until late December, though midfielder Josh Brownhill is only expected to miss out for a few days due to a knock. Parker has numerous absentees in defence, including left-back Hannes Delcroix , as well as centre-backs Hjalmar Ekdal , Joe Worrall and Jordan Beyer , so perhaps Connor Roberts , CJ Egan-Riley , Maxime Esteve and Lucas Pires will start in a back four. Forwards Lyle Foster , Manuel Benson and Mike Tresor are all ruled out until early next month, and this could mean that Jay Rodriguez continues to lead the forward line in front of a supporting cast of Jaidon Anthony, Hannibal Mejbri and Luca Koleosho . Coventry have considerably fewer injury concerns but will still be unable to select goalkeeper Ben Wilson , as well as forwards Haji Wright and Raphael Borges Rodrigues . The visitors are likely to field Victor Torp and Norman Bassette as a pairing in attack, while Bradley Collins may be protected by centre-backs Joel Latibeaudiere , Bobby Thomas and Luis Binks . Midfielder Josh Eccles is suspended and wing-back Jay Dasilva is a doubt, so expect Jake Bidwell to replace Dasilva and for Carr to select a midfield three consisting of Jamie Allen , Ben Sheaf and Jack Rudoni . Burnley possible starting lineup: Trafford; Roberts, Egan-Riley, Esteve, Pires; Cullen, Massengo; Anthony, Mejbri, Koleosho; Rodriguez Coventry City possible starting lineup: Collins; Latibeaudiere, Thomas, Binks; Van Ewijk, Allen, Sheaf, Rudoni, Bidwell; Torp, Bassette Given Burnley's resilience at home this term, it is difficult to see them losing on Tuesday at Turf Moor. However, the hosts have struggled for goals of late, and they come up against a Coventry side that have snatched valuable points against the division's best. Retail giant Tesco also said a whiskey product promoted by Mr McGregor would be removed from its UK outlets as well as in Ireland. The move by retailers to boycott brands associated with Mr McGregor came days after a High Court jury found he had assaulted a woman in a Dublin hotel six years ago. Nikita Hand had alleged in her civil action that she was raped by the mixed martial arts fighter. He denied the claim. She was awarded €248,603. Stores that will no longer sell products linked to Mr McGregor include the Supervalu chain, Costcutter stores and Carry Out off licences. BWG Foods, a leading retail and wholesale company, said whiskey and stout products associated with Mr McGregor would no longer be listed for distribution across its network of Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL stores. This could see brands removed from about 1,000 outlets. Separately the company that bought Mr McGregor’s whiskey brand will stop using his “name and likeness” in marketing. McGregor sold his Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand to Mexican-owned Proximo Spirits in 2021, in a deal that was said at the time to have valued the business at some $130 million (€123.9 million). The image of the mixed martial arts fighter remained visible on Proximo websites on Tuesday, and the drink remained listed among “McGregor brands” on his personal website. But Proximo has now indicated he will no longer feature in company marketing. “Since 2021, Proximo Spirits has been the 100 per cent owner of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey,” the company said in response to questions. “Going forward, we do not plan to use Mr McGregor’s name and likeness in the marketing of the brand.” There was no immediate comment from Mr McGregor’s representative. Mr McGregor entered the brewing business in recent years with a product called Forged Irish Stout which has been sold in some off-licences, supermarkets and several pubs On Sunday the Rape Crisis Network Ireland urged retailers to stop selling products associated with Mr McGregor. Before lunchtime on Tuesday the Barry Group, which operates the Costcutter stores and Carry Out off-licences, became the first to say it was dropping Forged Irish Stout and Proper Twelve Whiskey . “This action reflects our commitment to maintaining a retail environment that resonates with the values of our customers and partners,” it said. Shortly afterwards Musgraves, which owns the Supervalu and Centra outlets, followed suit. Tesco said it would be removing Proper No 12 whiskey from sale. It does not stock Forged Irish Stout. . [ Court battle looms over who will pay legal costs in Conor McGregor case Opens in new window ] The Barry Group, one of Ireland’s leading retail food and alcohol wholesale providers which operates the Costcutter and Carry Out off-licence outlets told The Irish Times on Tuesday that it had “made the decision to remove Forged (Irish) Stout and Proper Twelve (whiskey) from circulation to our network”. Meanwhile, it is understood that BWG Foods, one of the country’s leading retail and wholesale companies, has decided to delist products linked to Mr McGregor and will no longer be distributing them across its network of Spar, EUROSPAR, Mace, Londis and XL stores. On Monday, the developer of the ‘Hitman’ video game series said it was removing content featuring Conor McGregor. IO Interactive said in a statement on social media: “In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately”. “We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr McGregor from our storefronts starting today.” A number of industry sources maintained that while Forged Irish Stout is on sale in some pubs, it is not widely available. The Press Up Group, the country’s largest hospitality group, said it “never stocked any of Conor McGregor’s brands”. One Dublin off-licence operator said on Monday that his store would not be selling McGregor products again. Damien Martin of Martin’s off-licence in Marino in Dublin said his store did not generally stock such products but had previously secured a case on request for a customer. He said in the aftermath of the court case last week, his store had no interest doing so in the future. [ ‘I know what happened in that room’: the full story of the Conor McGregor case Opens in new window ] Supermarkets Lidl and Aldi also said they did not sell any products owned by Mr McGregor. On Sunday, the Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) urged retailers to stop selling Mr McGregor’s stout and whiskey products in the aftermath of the jury’s decision in the High Court. Clíona Saidléar, RCNI executive director, said companies making money from his alcohol and other products need to look at whether they want to align themselves with a man found by a civil jury to have sexually assaulted a woman. Ms Saidléar said on Monday that she had not heard anything back from retailers on the issue. Separately the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said following the jury decision on Friday, calls to the national helpline had almost doubled over the weekend while the number of first-time callers have increased by 50 per cent. U.N. talks aimed at halting the degradation and desertification of vast swathes of land started in Saudi Arabia on Monday after scientists fired a stark warning over unsustainable farming and deforestation. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called it a "moonshot moment": a 12-day meeting for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), looking to protect and restore land and respond to drought amid the onslaught of climate change. The last such meeting, or "Conference of the Parties" (COP) to the convention, held in Ivory Coast in 2022, produced a commitment to "accelerating the restoration of one billion hectares of degraded land by 2030". But the UNCCD, which brings together 196 countries and the European Union, now says 1.5 billion hectares (3.7 billion acres) must be restored by decade's end to combat crises including escalating droughts. A day before the COP16 talks in Saudi Arabia, home to one of the world's biggest deserts, a new U.N. report warned that forest loss and degraded soils were reducing resilience to climate change and biodiversity loss. "If we fail to acknowledge the pivotal role of land and take appropriate action, the consequences will ripple through every aspect of life and extend well into the future," UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw said in the report. Land degradation disrupts ecosystems and makes land less productive for agriculture, leading to food shortages and spurring migration. Land is considered degraded when its productivity has been harmed by human activities like pollution or deforestation. Desertification is an extreme form of degradation. Activists accused Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, of trying to water down calls to phase out fossil fuels at last month's COP29 U.N. climate talks in Azerbaijan. However, desertification is a perennial issue for the arid kingdom. "We are a desert country. We are exposed to the harshest mode of land degradation, which is desertification," deputy environment minister Osama Faqeeha told AFP. Saudi Arabia is aiming to restore 40 million hectares of degraded land, Faqeeha told AFP, without specifying a timeline. He said Riyadh anticipated restoring "several million hectares of land" by 2030. So far 240,000 hectares have been recovered using measures including a ban on illegal logging and expanding the number of national parks from 19 in 2016 to more than 500, Faqeeha said. Other ways to restore land include planting trees, crop rotation, managing grazing and restoring wetlands. "We found ourselves caught in a vicious cycle that we must break," UNCCD executive secretary Ibrahim Thiaw told the conference in Riyadh. "We can only achieve this if we move beyond the silos that hinder our collective action and if we adopt a holistic approach that recognizes the constant interaction between desertification, biodiversity loss, and the acceleration of climate change." Thousands of delegates have registered to attend the December 2-13 COP16 talks in Riyadh, including "close to 100" government ministers, Thiaw said. The event comes at a parlous time for the COP environmental meetings, which bring together the signatories to various treaties to try to strike new agreements. Last week the COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan came to a contentious end, as a pledge of $300 billion to help poorer countries transition to cleaner energy was slammed as too low by developing nations. On Sunday in Busan, South Korea, deeply divided negotiators missed a deadline to reach a landmark global treaty to curb plastic pollution. And last month, talks in Colombia -- also called COP16 -- ended without a roadmap to ramp up funding for species protection. They will resume in Rome in February. Matthew Archer, assistant professor in the Department of Society Studies at Maastricht University and author of "Unsustainable: Measurement, Reporting and the Limits of Corporate Sustainability", was dismissive of the Saudi meeting. It is part of the "COP charade (that) is totally incapable of facilitating the kind of political action that might sufficiently address the socioecological crises we are facing", he told AFP. "I wouldn't hold my breath for COP16 to yield a tenable solution to desertification," added Archer.Boardroom donkeys to blame – but Welsh rugby will rise againMILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo was available for the Milwaukee Bucks against the Washington Wizards Saturday night after missing one game with swelling in his left knee. Antetokounmpo sat out the Bucks' 106-103 NBA Cup victory at Miami on Tuesday. I’m not one to get into politics, especially when it comes to sports, but President Elect Donald Trump just made a decision that is sure to infuriate a large portion of the New York tri-state area. No, I’m not talking about the boarder, the economy, or climate change. I’m talking about foreign policy. Namely regarding the United Kingdom. Donald Trump has announced that investment banker Warren Stephens will be his ambassador to UK and not Woody Johnson like he was during the last time Trump was in office. I am pleased to announce that Warren A. Stephens, one of the most successful businessmen in the Country, has been nominated to serve as the United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James's, a role in which he will act as our Representative to the United Kingdom. Over the last... The move to go from Johnson to Stephens means that Woody will remain free to continue to run the Jets into the ground for the next four years as he has for the past two decades. The move comes as a surprise to many around the Jets as many were preparing for Johnson to return to his post overseas after Trump was elected back in November. There is still some hope that Johnson will receive some post within Trump’s administration, but Johnson has reportedly coveted a return to the UK after his last posting there. If Woody were to be shipped off as many Jets fans hoped, his brother Christopher Johnson would likely take his place running the New York Jets. Christopher did not do very well in his first go-round running the organization, but the belief is that he is much more level-headed than his brother and would likely have learned from his past mistakes, something Woody is unable or unwilling to do. Woody Johnson’s tenure as the owner of the New York Jets since he bought the team from the Hess family has been filled mostly with terrible decisions and propensity to chase back pages instead of Super Bowls. Woody is someone who knows very little about football, but will not shy away from inserting himself into football decisions as opposed to leaving those decisions to those qualified to make them. This season has been a banner year for Johnson’s ineptitude, starting with forcing his GM to make several moves this offseason that Joe Douglas was against. One of which was signing Tyron Smith to play left tackle, a move that backfired when Tyron was terrible this season and is now likely out for the season . Woody gave much of the power in the organization to Aaron Rodgers, giving him everything he asked for at the expense of the team that was being built prior to his arrival. Woody tried to force the Jets to bench Aaron Rodgers four games into the season. After firing his head coach after only five weeks, Johnson then forced Douglas to make moves he did not think prudent like signing Haason Reddick and trading for Davante Adams. Johnson finally fired Joe Douglas during the bye week and has made a public spectacle of the Jets yet again. It is clear to everyone except Woody Johnson that the thing that is most wrong with the Jets organization, is Woody Johnson. Now it appears that any hope of Johnson leaving the team for a few years is off the table. Johnson will likely continue to hear chants of “sell the team” wherever he goes as fans are beyond frustrated with his tenure as owner. Keep those chants coming Jets fans. If there is one thing we know about Woody Johnson, is he hears everything. So, make sure you keep saying it loud for him.
