Famine is spreading in Sudan due to a war between the military and a notorious paramilitary group that has devastated the country and created the world’s largest displacement crisis, a global hunger monitoring group said Tuesday. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, said it detected famine in five areas, including in Sudan’s largest displacement camp, Zamzam, in North Darfur province, where famine was found for the first time in August. The report said the war has triggered unprecedented mass displacement and a collapsing economy. It said hostilities can result in farmers abandoning their crops, looting and stock destruction. Along with the Zamzam camp, which has more than 400,000 people, famine was also detected in two other camps for displaced people, Abu Shouk and al-Salam in North Darfur, and the Western Nuba Mountains, the IPC report said. Five other areas in North Darfur are projected “with reasonable evidence” to experience famine in the next six months, including el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, it said. Seventeen areas in the Nuba Mountains and the northern and southern areas of Darfur are at risk of famine, it added. The report also said some areas in the capital, Khartoum, and the east-central province of Gezira “may be experiencing” famine-like conditions. It said experts were unable to confirm whether famine threshold has been surpassed due to lack of data. “It is not merely a lack of food but a profound breakdown of health, livelihoods and social structures, leaving entire communities in a state of desperation,” it said. There is widespread hunger, with food in markets scarce and prices high. Aid groups say they struggle to reach the most vulnerable as warring parties limit access, especially in North Darfur province. Ahead of the IPC's report, Sudan’s government said it had suspended its participation in the global monitoring system, according to a senior United Nations official with knowledge of the move. In a letter dated Dec. 23, Agriculture Minister Abu Baker al-Beshri accused the IPC of “issuing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and dignity,” said the U.N. official, who spoke in condition of anonymity to discuss the letter. Sudan's 20-month war has killed more than than 24,000 people and driven over 14 million people — about 30% of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. An estimated 3.2 million Sudanese have crossed into neighboring countries including Chad, Egypt and South Sudan. The war began in April 2023 when tensions between its military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces exploded into fighting in Khartoum before spreading to other areas. The conflict has been marked by atrocities including ethnically motivated killing and rape, according to the U.N. and rights groups. The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. Dervla Cleary, a senior emergency and rehabilitation officer at the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said 638,000 people are experiencing famine. “The situation in Sudan is just awful. It is unacceptable in a world like today,” she said. The IPC report called for a ceasefire, calling it the only way to reduce the risk of famine spreading further." Sudan is the third country where famine was declared in the past 15 years, along with South Sudan and Somalia. The IPC comprises more than a dozen U.N. agencies, aid groups and governments that use its monitoring as a global reference for analysis of food and nutrition crises. The organization has also warned that large parts of Gaza’s Palestinian population face the threat of famine. The NJSIAA boys soccer tournament will officially come to a close on Sunday with four Group finals. "Pet sitter," "chauffeur," "bakery assistant" and other service jobs are drawing a surge of interest in Singapore, according to the 2024 Rising Jobs list by job matching and hiring platform Indeed. While workers in the country eye service and support roles, employers are focused on finding talent in high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, according to Indeed's study which analyzed job postings and click trends on the platform between November 2023 and November 2024. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are "This trend clearly paints a picture of a job market with contrasting priorities — employers chasing innovation while job seekers gravitate toward roles that feel accessible and practical," according to the report. The study shares where hiring demand is growing and the roles that have been trending among job seekers in Singapore. These are the job postings that had the highest growth between November 2023 and November 2024, according to Indeed: "The demand for sales and marketing managers is rising as businesses work to stand out in an increasingly crowded digital marketplace," Saumitra Chand, career expert at Indeed, told CNBC Make It . "As sectors like technology, lifestyle, and e-commerce continue to grow, marketing professionals play a crucial role in driving revenue and shaping brand identity," he said, and professionals skilled in video production, SEO and campaign management are in demand. Additionally, employers and organizations in Singapore are also ramping up their search for those skilled in "transformative technologies" such as machine learning, and civil engineering, which is "driven by Singapore's ongoing emphasis on innovation and infrastructure development," said Chand. That comes on the back of Singapore's then Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's February announcement that the city-state will allocate more than 1 billion Singapore dollars (about $743 million) toward furthering the country's AI development and capabilities. Despite that, workers in Singapore are leaning heavily into service and support roles, as evidenced by Indeed's data, which shows the job postings with the highest increase in clicks from job seekers: "For many, roles like pet sitting or chauffeuring offer something that high-stakes jobs often struggle to provide: simplicity, flexibility, and a sense of control. These positions allow individuals to step away from the relentless pressure of long hours and rapid deadlines," said Chand. Singapore's high cost of living could be another factor pushing some job seekers to find "immediate" and "accessible" roles that allow them to meet their financial needs without extensive training, he added. These roles also align with a growing desire for flexibility after the pandemic, he said. Want to earn more money at work? Take CNBC's new online course How to Negotiate a Higher Salary . Human societies need a radical overhaul to stop the destruction of the planet, according to the U.N. biodiversity expert panel's "transformative change" report. The assessment, the second by the expert panel last week, says overconsumption in richer countries, a concentration of wealth and power, and a society increasingly disconnected from nature were driving ecological destruction. It offered ideas of how to respond to "biodiversity loss, nature's decline and the projected collapse of key ecosystem functions". Taking action will be difficult -- but not impossible, the report said. "It is not just governments. It is not just business. It is not just civil society. It is all of us. We all need to work together," said Arun Agrawal, one of the lead authors of the report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Here are three examples of successful transformations, big and small, according to IPBES. Sea bounty In 2002 Spain suffered what was at the time its worst environmental disaster, when the Prestige oil tanker broke in two, spilling fuel that blackened swathes of the Atlantic coastline. Fishing communities in Galicia responded to the devastation by pioneering a new way to manage a marine reserve, with fishers, scientists and the local authorities working together. The "Os Minarzos" reserve model was "not without tensions", IPBES said. But more than 17 years later, the area has better fishing practices, more species and higher incomes -- as well as improved trust and cooperation. It also inspired new guidelines for the U.N.'s agriculture body and a network of more than 20 million fishers in Europe and across parts of North and South America. Ant Forest China's largest private tree planting project, Ant Forest, is a mobile phone application that rewards users for climate friendly activities. The app boasts that 500 million people have used its program, which gives users "green energy points" for acts like walking or cycling to work instead of driving, and cutting down on plastic and paper. The points grow into a virtual tree, which Ant Forest matches by planting a real tree. "Recognizing a wide range of ecological and social goals, the plants are suited to specific contexts and provide jobs in eco-agriculture and ecotourism in remote rural areas facing environmental degradation in China," the report said. Since its launch in 2016, the project has planted 548 million trees in 13 provinces. 'Power of community' Traditional knowledge from indigenous peoples and local communities is a key aspect of the report, which highlighted the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy in Kenya. IPBES said this "represents a new model for conservation", which tries to tackle a range of issues together, including species loss, incomes and climate change. The conservancy involves community-managed protected areas, as well as activities like river cleaning and tree planting. IPBES said the project has succeeded in creating areas "where both humans and wildlife thrive". "Over a very short period of time, biodiversity reappeared," said Karen O'Brien, another of the lead authors of the report. "The power of community, again and again in our examples, is important."TikTok CEO meets with Trump ahead of January banGuidehouse Names Shannon White Leader of Defense & Security Segment
A friend of mine used to say that the first question we ask when we’re introduced to a new piece of technology is, “How can I use this to have sex?” To that end, here’s how to use a Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, Apple Vision Pro, PSVR, Vive, or other VR headset to have sex...or watch virtual porn, anyway. (If you're wondering what else you can do with your Quest 3 or 3S, here's a guide to the must-have apps for both.) How to watch VR Porn with a Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S or other VR headset It’s almost comically easy to have an “entry-level” VR porn experience in virtual reality with any headset that isn't manufactured by Apple. (More on that below.) Entry level porn VR porn viewing, step-by-step Lock the door. Put on your headset. Click on your web-browser-of-choice Navigate to a site that hosts VR porn. Free video megasites like Youporn have a VR section, or just use Google to search something out. Clicking on a video should launch you into VR—but "should" is doing a lot of work. These are random files hosted on janky free porn sites, so don't be surprised if you need to do a little trial-and-error to find one that works right. That’s all you need to know to get a taste of the VR porn thing, but because of the massive file sizes of VR video, streaming is likely to be choppy, and free movies are usually not in the highest resolution—again, janky but free. To get a better experience, you’re going to have to (gasp) pay to watch it. Suggested headsets for VR porn-viewing: Valve Index VR Full Kit Meta Quest 2 Meta Quest 3 HTC Vive Pro 2 How to watch VR porn with a Meta Quest 3 and 3S The above instructions for streaming "regular" VR porn work on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets, but the "3 series" has front-facing pass-through camera arrays that add a new wrinkle to "adult content": augmented reality. Getting your pass-through-porn on can be fairly complicated, so here's a separate post that goes into detail about how to get augmented reality porn to work on your Meta Quest 3 and 3S . How to watch Porn with an Apple Vision Pro Apple's Vision Pro can stream, download, and play “normal” videos (both adult and "mainstream") on gigantic virtual reality screens easily through its web browser, but immersive, 3D videos produced specifically for virtual or augmented reality will not work on your Apple Vision Pro's browser. Part of the issue is that WebXR, the programming interface for accessing augmented reality and virtual reality devices, is not automatically enabled in the Vision Pro's browser. Not having WebXR enabled means no VR porn, but it also means you won't have access to a slew of non-adult VR and AR content like web-based games, tours, productivity apps, etc. Here's how to turn WebXR on: Open Settings. Select Apps. Select Safari. Scroll to the bottom of the window and select Advanced. Scroll to the bottom of the window and select Feature Flags. Under Experimental XR Features, enable WebXR Device API and WebXR Hand Input Module. Under WebKit Feature Flags, enable WebXR Augmented Reality Module and WebXR GamePads Module. Exit Settings. Open Safari, or if it's already open, refresh a WebXR-enabled page to check it is working. But even with WebXR enabled, you still can't launch full VR porn videos on an Apple Vision Pro—yet. I spoke to Alex Novac, of VR Porn site SexLikeReal, and he said, "a lot has been done on our end to make things work with AVP. It's a great tool for videos. Will be making a huge update soon." Advanced VR porn viewing Pick a VR website. Because VR porn is relatively new, more costly to produce, and has a smaller audience than “normal” adult videos, there aren’t an overwhelming number of sites dedicated to it. Most of them have sample videos to view, and some provide single-day access for very cheap so you can see if you dig it. Check out this list of the most well-known producers, and make a choice. Did you lock the door? Open the browser, navigate to your newly chosen site and enter your credit card digits. Membership fees vary from site to site, but expect a range of $20 to $30 a month. From here, you can stream full-length videos at very high quality, but the streaming might still be choppy. If so... Download and save video to your device — These videos can be over 10 gigs, so it might take a little bit. Play the video —Major VR headsets come with great video browsers, but if you want advanced features, download Skybox for 10 bucks. That way you can save video to your PC and stream from your computer easily. Get the right player : Some adult VR sites are configured to work best with specific browsers or video players, and you should be directed as to what to install. If you want to get really advanced, you can delve into the world of ( link is NSFW ) virtual reality sex toys . These are devices designed to vibrate and oscillated in sync with videos. I have no idea how well these work and I'm not super anxious to find out. Is virtual reality porn any good? Now that you know how to view porn in virtual reality, you have to ask yourself if you should . Virtual reality’s “you are there” immersion provides an experience that is markedly different from traditional porn, but it’s not necessarily better. Like all things of this nature, it comes down to personal taste. I checked out a little bit of the stuff (for research purposes only, of course), and, without going into too much detail, here are the pros and cons: Locked-in perspective: The idea of putting the viewer right up in the action means the camera is locked to your perspective. If you like that kind of thing, it’s gravy for you, but if you don’t ... well, you gave it a shot. The performance: The camera/you feel very close to the performers in VR porn videos and the illusion is fairly convincing, but actually selling that kind of intimacy requires acting talent. It’s a different kind of performing than film or stage altogether, and, at the risk of being negative, many pornographic performers don’t have the chops to really pull it off, so it can just feel weird, and not sexy-weird. Again, your mileage may vary. Limited content: Because it is more expensive and more difficult to shoot VR video, and there is a smaller audience, it seems like almost all VR porn is geared toward a mainstream porn audience. If you share the tastes of the majority of porn viewers, you’ll be happy. If you’re into something more esoteric, you might find it difficult or impossible to find what you like, at least until more pervs join the virtual world. Gender-bending: Most virtual reality porn is designed for heterosexual men, but not all of it. There is VR porn from the point of view of queer people, which provides maybe the most unique possibility of VR porn: putting yourself in the skin of someone else. Looking down at yourself and seeing a different body (one that doesn’t skip ab day) is strange enough, but looking down and seeing a differently gendered body is positively freaky in the best possible way. I can only assume this will lead to a new age of empathy and the end of sexism and homophobia. For couples? Realistically, most porn is going to be consumed solo, but some couples are strapping on headsets (and maybe other devices) and incorporating the virtual into their shared real sex lives. I think a real experience while wearing a headset would be a little ridiculous, but maybe I'm just old-fashioned.Former pharma exec was allegedly part of $38M insider trading scheme, feds say

DETROIT (AP) — Starting in September of 2027, all new passenger vehicles in the U.S. will have to sound a warning if rear-seat passengers don't buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalized the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren't fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver's seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don't fasten their belts. Front-center seats will not get a warning because NHTSA found that it wouldn't be cost effective. The agency said most vehicles already have warnings for the outboard passenger seats. The rule also lengthens the duration of audio and visual warnings for the driver's seat. The front-seat rules are effective starting Sept. 1 of 2026. Rear passengers consistently use seat belts at a lower rate than front passengers, the agency says. In 2022, front belt use was just under 92%, while rear use dropped to about 82%. About half of automobile passengers who died in crashes two years ago weren’t wearing belts, according to NHTSA data. The seat belt rule is the second significant regulation to come from NHTSA in the past two months. In November the agency bolstered its five-star auto safety ratings to include driver assistance technologies and pedestrian protection. Safety advocates want the Department of Transportation, which includes NHTSA, to finish several more rules before the end of the Biden administration, because President-elect Donald Trump has said he’s against new government regulations. Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, urged the department to approve automatic emergency braking for heavy trucks and technology to prevent impaired driving.Chris Jericho Dishes on Facing Fellow WWE Alum Matt CardonaCable Conduit Systems Market: $7.31B in 2022, Expected to Reach $14.62B by 2031

Ilona Maher, America's biggest rugby star and "Dancing With the Stars" runner-up, has waltzed herself over to the United Kingdom to play for the Bristol Bears. Maher announced the move on her TikTok account Monday after months of speculation as to whether she might join the Premiership Women's Rugby league. Rumors began to circulate in October that she was in talks with the Bristol or Gloucester teams, but the season started while Maher was competing on the popular reality series "Dancing With the Stars." The show, which films in Los Angeles, ended last week with Maher — and here with her partner, Alan Bersten — placing second. She added to the speculation that her playing career was headed across the pond when she posted over the weekend from an airport on her way to London. But Maher finally put the rumors to rest in videos on her social media, saying, "The Eagle has landed." "I'm looking forward to calling Bristol home as we gear up for the Rugby World Cup 2025 played here in England," Maher joked. She went on to joke if she could "get a roast" after filming the video, saying it was a big reason she was there. Bears head coach Dave Ward described Maher's signing as a "coup" in a statement Monday , adding that her style offers the team "a new dimension." "She is one of the biggest names in women’s sport, let alone rugby, and we believe she will add real value to our programme on and off the field," Ward said. According to the team, Maher will train with the Bears before spending the holidays in the U.S. and is set to return for a three-month deal starting in January. The league final is scheduled for mid-March. Maher has amassed more than 3 million TikTok followers and another 4 million on Instagram. The 28-year-old athlete rose to fame during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, posting hilarious TikToks from the Olympic Village as the Covid pandemic restricted fans and family members from in-person spectating. Her star has only brightened since the Tokyo Games, as Maher was part of this summer's team that brought the U.S. its first rugby title in 100 years. Fans diligently followed her posts from the Paris Games. The U.S. women's team won bronze at the 2024 Olympics , the furthest the team has ever gotten at the Games. Upon returning home, Maher took yet another challenge by signing on to join "Dancing With the Stars." She described it as a show she used to watch with her family and something that outside her comfort zone. "I think I'm also doing it again to show that rugby players are so multidimensional," Maher told ABC's "Good Morning America " in September. "We go out there on the field and we're beasts, but I can be a beauty, I can dance, I can do all these things. Throughout the competition, Maher occasionally struggled, and at one point even broke down crying after a rough attempt at a jive. But fans praised the Olympian for her vulnerability and determination, voting for her week after week. She also became the first female celebrity on the show to lift her partner in a dance. Maher's followers were thrilled to hear the news that she's joining the Bears, and among those cheering her on were her "DWTS" cast mates. "Let’s go!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you. And can’t wait to see you kill it," Bersten commented on Maher's Instagram . The Premiership Women’s Rugby league is also going to be a slight change in format for what many are used to seeing Maher play in. She typically plays rugby sevens — with seven players per team, as is the style at the Olympics — but the league plays 15s, with 15 players per team. The 15s not only has more players, the matches are also significantly longer. The smaller squad is on the field for two 7-minute halves, whereas the traditional rugby 15s is played in two 40-minute intervals.NANOBIOTIX to Introduce Vision for Transforming Drug Design and Development with Next Nanotherapeutic Platform on 19 December 2024PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was minding his own business during practice recently, doing his due diligence while running his route when the ball suddenly came his way. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was minding his own business during practice recently, doing his due diligence while running his route when the ball suddenly came his way. Washington wasn’t sure what option he was on the play. he certainly wasn’t first. Probably not even second. Maybe not even third. Washington was on the back side all by his lonesome while a sea of wide receivers and running backs zig-zagged across quarterback Russell Wilson’s field of vision. Only, Wilson didn’t like what he saw. Not enough to throw it anyway. So he pivoted to his left and found Washington wide open for a big gain. Asked if he was surprised to find the ball in his hands, Washington nodded. “A little bit,” he said. “I don’t know. I don’t know what was going on with the other people.” Wilson did. He almost always seems to these days for the first-place Steelers (9-3), who find themselves atop the AFC North behind the play of their resurgent 36-year-old quarterback, who has taken a decidedly democratic approach to resurrecting his career. The nine-time Pro Bowler threw the ball to 10 different players while piling up 414 yards last week against the Bengals. Sure, mercurial star George Pickens got the ball. But so did Washington. And third tight end MyCole Pruitt. And wide receiver Ben Skowronek, who turned his second catch of the season into a 23-yard gain on a drive that ended with one of Wilson’s three touchdown passes. “You never know when it’s coming your way,” Skowronek said. Not with Wilson at the controls. Fourteen different players have at least one catch this season for the Steelers. That includes Mike Williams, whose lone grab a month since being acquired from the New York Jets is a 32-yard rainbow for the winning score in the final minutes against Washington. It also includes Skowronek, who spent the early portion of the season on injured reserve and worried he’d sort of lost his place in line while he rehabbed. Skowronek and his teammates have quickly learned that with Wilson, there is no “line.” During his six starts since returning from a calf injury, Wilson has thrown it wherever, whenever. “It’s like in baseball,” said Wilson, a former minor league second baseman. “You’ll never hit a home run if you don’t swing. And I really believe that you’ve got to swing, you’ve got to trust guys. You’ve got to be able to trust yourself.” Something that hasn’t been an issue for Wilson for years, even if he arrived in Pittsburgh at a crossroads following an abrupt fall from grace in Denver. The Steelers couldn’t sign Wilson to a one-year deal for the veteran minimum fast enough, and Wilson wasted little time building a rapport with players who were relative strangers. What began with throwing sessions in San Diego has morphed into team dinners and Friday nights where Wilson and first-year offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will hole themselves up in the team facility poring over tapes and bouncing ideas off each other until their wives call wondering where they are. On game days, that work manifests itself in various ways. It’s tight end Pat Freiermuth drifting toward an open area while Wilson scrambles, as he did two plays after Skowronek’s grab for a 25-yard touchdown. It’s Wilson calling an audible at the line of scrimmage late against Cincinnati to hit Van Jefferson for a 43-yard gain that led to a clinching field goal. It’s not just good for the stat sheet, it’s good for the vibes. “Morale is a big part,” Smith said. Guys who want to be invested. Spreading it around is beneficial in a myriad of ways. It means players don’t feel they are “decoys on every play,” as Smith put it. It also means once you put it on film, it means opponents have to find a way to defend it. And the more things an opponent has to defend, the better for an offense, particularly one led by a quarterback who will make his 195th start on Sunday when Cleveland (3-9) visits. “Russ has seen every coverage,” Skowronek said. “He’s ran all these concepts before. So he knows progressions like probably the back of his hand.” Besides, Wilson knows he can’t just preach about the importance of being unselfish without practicing it a little bit too. That means giving opportunities to those who have worked for it, no matter where they might fall on the depth chart. “I think that the best part about it is that we’re all super close,” Wilson said. “And I think that bond is really everything too, and just the understanding of each guy and the relationships that we have together, it’s fun. We’re having a great time.” It sure looks like it. The Steelers are averaging a healthy 28.7 points since Wilson recovered from a calf injury that forced him to watch the first six games from the sideline. For the first time in a long time, Pittsburgh no longer has to rely exclusively on its defense to get by. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. While Mike Tomlin will never get comfortable with the idea of getting into a shootout — blame his defensive coaching roots before taking over in Pittsburgh in 2007 — it’s nice to know his team can match opponents score for score if necessary. Another one could be looming against the Browns, who piled up more than 500 yards in a loss to Denver on Monday night. If one materializes, Wilson is ready to do whatever is necessary and find whoever is necessary, regardless of pedigree, salary or resume. “We got to love that part of it,” Wilson said. “We can’t fear it. We’ve got to want it. We’ve got to expect it. We’ve got to embrace it. We’ve got to challenge that. We’ve got to be in those moments and be locked into that moment. I think we do an extremely good job of that.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement Advertisement
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Amazon Web Services will invest another $10 billion to bolster its data center infrastructure in Ohio. The company and Republican Gov. Mike DeWine announced the plan Monday. The new investment will boost the amount it has committed to spending in Ohio by the end of 2029 to more than $23 billion. AWS launched its first data centers in the state in 2016 and currently operates campuses in two counties in central Ohio, home to the capital city of Columbus. The new investment will allow AWS to expand its data centers to new sites, but the company said those locations have not been determined yet and noted that its investment plans are contingent upon the execution of long-term energy service agreements. AWS said the new data centers will contain computer servers, storage drives, networking equipment and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, including artificial intelligence and machine learning. In June 2023, AWS said it would invest $7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data center operations in central Ohio. That was on top of $6 billion already invested through 2022.Rosen Law Firm Announces Investigation of Breaches of Fiduciary Duties by the Directors and Officers of Southwest Airlines Co. - LUVCurrencynewsbreaks Analyst Upgrades And Strategic Focus Drive Optimism For Paypal Holdings Inc.
