Artificial intelligence is all the rage these days, and it's making its way into gaming in a big way. Sony and Microsoft have only recently started implementing AI and machine learning into their consoles, with features like the PS5 Pro's PSSR, but PC hardware manufacturer Nvidia has been at it for much longer. The company brought a paradigm shift in PC gaming with its machine learning-based DLSS, and in a recent tour, showed me its ambitions with AI for the future of video games. At a press tour in Bangalore, Nvidia gave me a look at various generative AI-powered demos for gaming and content creation. Most of these demos had already been showcased at various industry conferences before, like Computex, but this was my first time getting hands-on with them. The demos, running on what Nvidia calls RTX AI PCs, included various experiences that use existing and new LLMs (Large Language Models) and run locally on Nvidia's RTX graphics cards. The entire suite of features makes up what's being called Nvidia ACE, a facilitator for the creation and deployment of digital humans in interactive media. These demos all use slightly different technologies to aid content creation and gaming in various ways. In one demo, I talked to an in-game NPC directly to guide me contextually through its progression system while another application makes it easy to search for documents and files on your system much faster than possible on vanilla Windows. One demo assists you with generative AI for creating images in a digital environment, while another is an extension of ChatGPT molded with an AI NPC. It's a lot to take in, so I chose to focus on what matters most to me: gaming. AI NPCs are the hot new thing that Nvidia wants to focus on, and we're starting to see their first real-world implementations in existing and upcoming games. At the event, I talked to an AI NPC in Amazing Seasun Games' multiplayer title Mecha BREAK. Put simply, you can talk to Martel, the in-game mechanic in charge of your mech suits, using natural language. Ask Martel about the objective for the next mission, and she will answer promptly. Ask her what the fastest mech armor in your inventory is, and she will bring it up ready for further customization, which you can direct with voice commands. Sure, you'll have to stick to lore-accurate terms when engaging with her, but it's a pretty cool demo. Is that a feature I see myself using any time soon? No, not after the excitement wears down after the first couple of prompts. While these demos look cool, gamers care more about practicality. I'd much rather use the input mechanics I'm familiar with, like a mouse and keyboard, to customize my in-game character and experience, than rely on an NPC with whom I have to talk. If I need any assistance, I'm more than happy to head to the internet where I'll find plenty of helpful guides and forums where the answers I'm looking for aren't fine-tuned by game creators to suit their needs. Perfect World Games' Legends tech demo was a similar experience. In it, you speak to Yun Ni, a member of a jungle tribe. You can talk to Yun Ni naturally and she can see and recognize objects from the real world using the webcam on your computer. While there is no game surrounding the demo itself, it is impressive how its developers have utilized GPT 4 within a container with a set amount of instructions governing the world Yun Ni inhabits. Ask her about the best cars from Tesla and she'll reply, "What's a car?" How would she know? She lives in a jungle. Hold up an object she might recognize, like a knife, and she'll get excited to talk about its applications in the jungle. Well, she seems to be excited by her replies, but I can't tell if she really is by her voice. She sounds the same as those text-to-speech auto-narrated TikTok videos, so you can guess how lifeless her voice must be. The same goes for Mecha BREAK's Martel, though I keep asking myself why I should care about any of this. There is a short delay between your command/inquiry and Yun Ni's answer as the demo sends data to GPT4 servers. While you're only waiting for a couple of seconds, it's enough to remind you that all of this is exactly what it appears to be: a gimmick. Microsoft also showed off a demo of its Copilot AI assisting gamers inside Minecraft earlier this year, though we've yet to see the feature ship in the current build of the game. There's an argument to be made about how the new wave of AI NPCs, who you primarily interact with using voice input, can be beneficial in the accessibility space. We're not at the point where games are interactive enough to be navigated through using only natural language voice inputs, but Nvidia ACE is paving the way for that future. One could also argue that while these features won't be of use, or be adopted by hardcore gamers, they may reach the casual masses on lower-end hardware. Speaking of hardware, Nvidia's technical product marketing manager John Gillooly tells us that all of these models are running locally on the hardware. We can confirm the same as we interacted with each demo on systems that were not connected to the internet, except for Legends, and they were using consumer hardware like the RTX 4080. The only cost? VRAM. We weren't given specific numbers, but don't count on holding long, meaningful conversations with these NPCs on an RTX 4050. Surprisingly, one demo that was curiously absent from the event was Project G-Assist. Nvidia demoed the AI assistant at Computex earlier this year in its prototype phase, but I didn't see it in action. For those unaware, G-Assist is an AI-powered chatbox that is fed information about your system's specs and the game you're playing. It works similarly to Microsoft's Copilot for gaming, where users can ask questions about the game and get contextual answers. G-Assist will also help gamers optimize their systems with minimal steps, and the closest I saw at the event was ChatRTX. ChatRTX is a local tool that lets you pick any of the publicly available LLMs and personalize them for your system. This includes Llama 2, Mistral 7B, CLIP, and more. Essentially, you can build a personal chatbot that has access to your system, and you can interact with it to find documents and photos and retrieve critical system information. It's a localized version of what Apple is advertising with its big AI makeover on iPhone with Apple Intelligence, except you can customize it to your heart's content. While they're all impressive on their own, what's missing is a sense of coherency. With Microsoft also promising several context-aware AI features in its upcoming PCs and OS releases, why should I care about Nvidia's promises? If most of these features are only available on Nvidia GPUs, will developers integrate them well enough into their projects and leave AMD/Intel users in the dust? There are a lot of questions surrounding the future of AI in gaming and general computing, and every company has a slightly different answer. But even if the hardware and software manufacturers can get together to figure out their goals and present a unified vision to the end gamer, will the consumers even care? At the end of the day, I just want to use my PC to play games and I want my hardware to do one thing: run them well. I do that to avoid talking to people in the real world, and I'm not going to start talking to video game characters. At least not until they start to feel more like a human, and that's probably going to take a while.

Now, the company has upgraded the tech with its new LiveMemory tool. Like Deep Nostalgia, LiveMemory uses AI to make short animated videos from still images that theoretically show what might have happened right after the photo was taken. It's an upgraded version of the same feature, capable of making a kid on a bike in a picture ride away or a couple on their wedding day turn and kiss. Or at least that's the pitch. I decided to try it out myself, as it's easy enough to use if you have an account and the MyHeritage mobile app. However, you only get a few tries with the free trial, and you need to pay up to remove the watermark. To make a LiveMemory, you upload whatever picture you want to see transformed. A few minutes later, you get an email from MyHeritage with the video. To spare my friends and family, I started with a picture of myself and a much-missed pet dog named Malfoy. You can see the resulting video below. Uncanny Nostalgia I was mostly impressed with how much the tech has improved from Deep Nostalgia. The movements of my head and Malfoy's head and body are quite realistic, and his tail, unseen in the photo, does look exactly like his actual tail. Even my wry expression is well observed, considering the AI still had to go on for the video. That said, I don't consider myself that wall-eyed, and while Malfoy's tail looked right, it also looked like it was growing out of the side of his body. We used to joke that Malfoy was a dog built by a committee in the dark, but even he had his tail in the right location. I decided to go simpler and just upload a straightforward portrait of myself at about a year old. You can see how that went below. Boneless boy Again, the expressions are great; it looks like I'm really enjoying a joke, and my head and neck are moving like an actual human being. On the other hand, the AI doesn't seem to realize that the young child in the image would definitely not have that many teeth gleaming in his mouth. Those teeth apparently stole all of the digital bones from my hands. Watching my clay-like fingers squish each other and occasionally pass through each other like monstrous tentacles is more likely to induce nausea than nostalgia. Compare that to the official launch video from MyHeritage, seen below. You can tell that even if there will be a lot of videos that people don't like, the ones that hit the mark will be very popular, just like Deep Nostalgia. GENEVA — The U.N. envoy for Syria is calling on authorities to save evidence from detention centers that were a hub of “unimaginable barbarity” that Syrians have faced for many years and cooperate with international investigators looking into such crimes. Geir Pederson referred to new images from the notorious Saydnaya military prison north of the capital, Damascus, after President Bashar Assad fled Syria as armed groups stormed in to overthrow his government over the weekend. “The images from Saydnaya and other detention facilities starkly underscore the unimaginable barbarity Syrians have endured and reported for years,” Pedersen said in a statement. Documentation and testimonies “only scratch the surface of the carceral system’s horrors,” he added. Pedersen urged authorities to cooperate with U.N. bodies like an independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria, which was created in 2011, and an independent group known as the IIIM that was set up five years later to also compile evidence of crimes. ROME — Leaders of the Group of 7 industrialized nations offered their full support for an inclusive political transition in Syria and invited all parties to preserve the country’s territorial integrity. JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says it struck Hamas militants in two locations in the southern Gaza Strip who planned to hijack aid convoys. Palestinian Health officials had earlier said that the two strikes killed 15 men who were part of local committees established to secure aid deliveries. The committees have been organized in cooperation with the Hamas-run Interior Ministry in Gaza. It was not possible to independently confirm either account of the strikes, which occurred overnight into Thursday. Israel has long accused Hamas of hijacking humanitarian aid deliveries, while U.N. officials have said there is no systemic diversion of aid . A group of men in the video said he was being treated well and would be safely returned home. Georgia quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday announced his plans to enter the NFL draft, five days after having season-ending elbow surgery . Beck, a fifth-year senior, made his NFL plans official on social media. Beck suffered a right elbow injury in the first half of the Bulldogs’ 22-19 overtime win over Texas in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 7 in Atlanta. Beck had surgery on Monday to repair his ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Beck is expected to begin throwing next spring. He aims to transform the land into a resort featuring 20 villas, a spa, a restaurant and a planetarium. “It’s a place of alignment. Kosmos is a place of connection,” Jadue Zalaquett said. “Kosmos, in a way, is a place to heal, and the San Luis Valley has a lot to do with healing.” He bought the property for $11,000 in December 2020. But with glass domes for stargazing and expensive price tags to stay the night, Jadue Zalaquett’s ambitious brainchild falls snugly into the category of “luxury ecotourism.” His site is an ideal spot for admiring constellations and distant galaxies. According to the National Park Service, the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is considered an International Dark Sky Park. Jadue Zalaquett said the area is a class two location on the Bortle dark-sky scale, which translates to “ truly dark ” skies. The resort’s planetarium will include a 1-meter telescope. In terms of getting visitors to Kosmos, “that’s gonna be the biggest attractor,” Jadue Zalaquett said. Development is still in the early stages, but it’s already garnering attention from the public: More than 12,000 Instagram users follow the resort’s page where project renderings and updates are shared. Kosmos plans to open its first villa early next year, said marketing operations manager Jennifer Geerlings. Although it’s still under construction, the resort has already booked more than 2,000 reservations, she added. “A lot of it, for some people, is the excitement of being the first to be able to stay in an experience like this,” Geerlings said in a phone interview. “There’s really no other resort that’s doing this.” While Jadue Zalaquett put about $500,000 toward getting the project off the ground, a crowdfunding campaign raised $1.9 million, Geerlings said. Donors paid a one-time fee to receive 50% discounts off their reservations for early 2025. So instead of paying the usual $700 nightly rate, they booked at $350 per night, Geerlings said. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye,” Geerlings said. “A planetarium is something that’s never been at a resort before.” In November, director of field operations Auston Duncan stepped over sagebrush and loose hardware to outline the state of construction on the project. An unfinished villa offered a hint of what’s to come. The rectangular building with exposed wooden rafters and newly-installed glass sliding doors will soon house a bedroom and a bathroom. Jeremy Stephen, the founder of Steamboat Springs-based Evolve Construction , built the villa out of hempcrete , which is made of hemp, water and lime. It works as an eco-friendly insulator, helping to mitigate heating and cooling costs and lending itself to the vision of Kosmos as a resort with sustainability in mind. On one side of the villa, a hot tub will be installed. On the other, a dome made out of glass and wood from Ekodome will cover the kitchen and loft area. The development will occur in phases. Next year, 16 stargazing villas (which hold up to four guests) and 4 galaxy villas (which hold up to eight guests) will be constructed, Geerlings said. Every stay includes an hour of a guided stargazing experience and telescope training. In 2026, the amenities will be built out. Those include the Mediterranean-style restaurant and the wellness center with spa features like hyperbaric chambers, a sauna and a cold plunge. In 2027, the planetarium will be added to the resort. To ensure dark skies, guests will park their cars and use electric golf carts to navigate the resort, Jadue Zalaquett said. He mentioned that discussions with consultants on the stargazing center included a NASA representative, who was interested in hosting a mission workshop at Kosmos next year. Both the planetarium and the spa will be open to the public, Geerlings added. All in all, it’s a bold plan. And Kosmos is looking to hire to make it happen. Right now, the business is in search of employees to lead their stargazing experiences. So far, it’s recruited a former Great Sand Dunes ranger, Geerlings said. The team is considering college students from Adams State University in Alamosa as interns. Kosmos will also need to staff resort operations, including housekeeping, security and front desk workers. “We’re gonna try and hire pretty much everyone locally,” Geerlings said. For Jadue Zalaquett, taking on an endeavor like this runs in his blood. He currently lives between Alamosa and Boulder, but Jadue Zalaquett was born in Chile and grew up in Miami. When his family migrated to Chile, they ran hotels. Several paternal relatives work as architects. However, Jadue Zalaquett didn’t initially follow the family business. Instead, he worked in technology startups for almost a decade. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he visited the San Luis Valley. He realized that, although the Great Sand Dunes were located less than a half hour away, tourists could only choose from a few lodging options. So came the idea for Kosmos.
