Shark's FlexStyle devices have a pretty impressive reputation for delivering salon-worthy tresses in rapid time and with minimal heat damage to your hair. In the brand's festive end of year sale, its stylers have been reduced massively, to help you see in 2025 in style. Now costing £239.99 from £299.99 at Shark, beating Boots and John Lewis ' price of £269.99 and £249.99, the Shark FlexStyle 5-in-1 Air Styler & Hair Dryer is a great investment piece that can give your hair bouncy curls - both naturally enhanced with the diffuser and manually with a barrel - volumise, smooth, and dry it effortlessly with less damage thanks to the device measuring heat 1,000 times per second, generating consistent air flow temperatures. The styler comes complete with auto-wrap curlers, a paddle brush, an oval brush, a concentrator, a diffuser and a storage case, meaning you can get five different styles in one fell swoop. Read more: Boots launches huge winter sale with 50% off top brands including Philips and Kylie Jenner Read more: Dunelm shoppers nab 'expensive looking' double bedding set for less than £14 using deal Now, I have this device - specifically the Wicked themed iteration that is currently out of stock (sob!) but I'm sure it'll be restocked in no time - and with shortish, curly and frizzy hair, I must admit I had relatively sceptical hopes for it to transform my hair into sumptuous locks in record time at home, as I'd seen all over social media. But I must say, I was proved well and truly wrong after testing it out for myself having given in to the hype. Let me tell you why. Firstly, the FlexStyler is a stunning piece to look at - it's not your regular, bulky hair dryer that is a faff to transport anywhere. It it long and sleek and has a button to fold it into a right angle (which is the position that dries your hair, rather than styles it). It can fit neatly into your bag without taking up too much room, making it great to travel with and isn't actually too loud. How it works is you need to dry your hair to about 70% with the dryer part of the hair styler in place, at a right angle, then, straighten it up (with the click of a button) to add your desired attachment. Packed with power, it dried my entire head of hair rapidly (taking drying time from 35 minutes to about 10) with its customisable heat and airflow settings to style with the various different attachments. I didn't even need to use the most powerful setting and it cut down my drying time immensely. I will say that using the attachments does take some getting used to - when using the curling barrel, it took several attempts to get the right angle to get the curl how I wanted it - and I've had a few times when the attachment has come out mid flow. Although, that may be my fault. Once you've nailed it, however, in my opinion you are left with enviable hair that looks like you've rolled out of the salon with just one styling device - my picture does not do it justice. My favourite attachment is the oval brush as, for someone with unruly curls, it's sometimes tricky to have silky smooth styles without using a pair of straighteners to get that soft finish, but the brush part cuts through the knots and leaves my hair super silky, it's really lovely. Plus, it gives it volume and makes me feel like I'm part of ABBA with its flicky finish. Although I would have enjoyed having a smaller oval brush to tackle my shorter layers. I enjoy the curler too as, if I want more Hollywood style curls, it's ideal for getting those big, bouncy barrels without the need for a curling tong. Although it is a bit of an investment at £239.99, one of the only negatives I've come across, it's one that I can see lasting for a long time and has all your styling needs in one piece of equipment. And, if it gives your hair that extra bit of protection from heat, it's worthwhile, no? Get the stone 5-IN-1 Flex-Styler here for £239.99 down from £299.99. Shark isn't the only place offering some pretty epic reductions on hair stylers of this calibre. Boots has reduced the price of the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler And Dryer in Strawberry Bronze And Blush Pink to £399.99 from £479.99, meanwhile Bellissima Italia's Air Wonder 8 in 1 Hot Air Styler is now £69.99 down from £129.99.

The “Fictions of Art” section of the book, the first of five, features examples of Lethem writing parallel to, rather than directly about, an artist’s work. “I couldn’t do art writing, or perhaps I wanted to invent another version of what art writing would be,” he explains, “so, I wrote what I always wrote: scenes and situations and voices, characters and set pieces, sprung from my response to the art.” The resulting text is not ekphrastic writing, nor is it the kind of straightforward fiction of the kind Ann Patchett, Louise Erdrich, Richard Russo, and company penned in response to Linden Frederick’s dark paintings of Maine . Lethem’s piece on Fred Tomaselli, for example, takes the form of a letter to a friend describing a visit to the artist’s studio in Brooklyn. In the course of relating their interactions, he does offer some critical reading. “His work is celebratory,” Lethem states, “and I find it explosively happy even when the drugs or some of the other imagery takes on a somewhat ominous overtone.” But the rest of the piece is more entertaining than incisive, an account of their day in Williamsburg that includes lunch at Peter Luger’s. Lethem’s texts are often wonderfully absurdist, echoing his fiction, such as his surreal detective story, Gun, With Occasional Music (1994). In an homage to Perry Hoberman , a new media artist who often incorporates machines in his installations, he offers a series of droll vignettes. Here’s one: “You call Missing Persons, and get your own answering machine. You wait to leave a message, but the beep never comes. The beep never comes. The beep never comes. Beep.” This amusing bit of farce aligns with Hoberman’s focus on people and technology. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Part of the pleasure of this collection is the diversity of art practices Lethem covers. In one section he pays tribute to graffiti, which, he writes, “inserts itself like the blade of a knife between creation and destruction, between publicity and furtiveness, between word and image, cartoon, icon and hieroglyph” — an eloquent way to describe this fugitive art form. He also highlights his love of comics and cartoons, “objectified books,” and the Italian verbo-visual artist Mirella Bentivoglio’s stone typewriter, among many other subjects. The collection ends with two essays related to the author’s father. In the first, “My Father Has Started a Painting” (which also serves as the foreword to a new book of Richard Brown Lethem’s poems, Roots, Stones & Baggage (2023)), he shares memories of how the aforementioned childhood household with its studio and library shaped his worldview. Lethem admits up front to suffering some artist envy. “I’m sure I’m not the first writer,” he muses, “to yearn for the seemingly more grounded and absolute situation of the painter or sculptor, who dwells in what looks to be an enviable realm of craft, routine, and expertise.” As a once-upon-a-time painter himself, in identifying with visual artists, Lethem is “searching for a lost self,” as he puts it. With this collection of sundry tributes to painters, sculptors, and the like, he is well on his way to finding it. An energized SMU squad will carry a three-game winning streak against up-and-down Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for each team on Saturday in Dallas. The game is the first for the Mustangs' basketball team as a member of one of the nation's perennial powerhouse leagues, but don't expect SMU (7-2) to wilt in the spotlight. The Mustangs lambasted Alabama State 101-72 on Tuesday in their most recent outing. Their two losses came against Butler on the road by 11 points and against Mississippi State at home by five. Kario Oquendo poured in a season-high 20 points to lead seven SMU scorers in double figures in the win over Alabama State. Matt Cross added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs while Samet Yigitoglu and Chuck Harris scored 12 points apiece. Yohan Traore and B.J. Edwards each had 11 and Jerrell Colbert hit for 10. "I think it's finally getting to the point where we are starting to figure out how to play as a team," Oquendo said. "You can see it from game to game. We're getting better, and every practice, we're getting better. I believe the more games we play together, the more the things start coming together." SMU is second in scoring per game in the ACC (averaging 88.3 points) and assists per game (16.4). The Mustangs lead the ACC in rebound margin (plus-10.9), total rebound average (43.3 per game) and offensive rebounds (15.2 a game) -- all in all, an impressive start to their campaign. Boopie Miller is the SMU leader in scoring average (15.6 points per game) and assists (5.8), with Cross the top rebounder (7.5 per game). The Cavaliers (5-3) head to Dallas after an 87-69 loss at No. 13 Florida on Wednesday in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Elijah Saunders scored 19 points for Virginia while Isaac McKneely added 12 points -- all on 3-pointers. The Cavaliers, however, had no answer for the Florida defense, committing 15 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Gators. Virginia led 18-9 early but were down by four at halftime. They got to within a point after a deep basket by Saunders in the opening minute of the second half, but that was as close as the Cavaliers would come. "Overall, I was very, very pleased with the first half," Virginia interim coach Ron Sanchez said. "I think that we handled adversity well. This group is on its way of becoming who they're going to be. It's painful growth, but you grow nonetheless." McKneely leads the Cavaliers with 13.1 points per game, followed by Saunders at 10.3. Jacob Cofie is the top rebounder at 6.4 per game, while Andrew Rohde has a team-best average of three assists. The teams have met just once before, with the Cavaliers outlasting SMU 76-73 in the semifinals of the Corpus Christi Challenge on Nov. 29, 2013. --Field Level Media
Trudeau directs key adviser to deliver renewed national security strategyFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Breece Hall could play Sunday at Jacksonville after missing a game with a knee injury. Hall has been dealing with a hyperextension and injured MCL in his left knee that sidelined him last Sunday at Miami. But he was a full participant at practice Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. Hall was officially listed as questionable on the team's final injury report. “He looks good right now,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “So it’s promising.” Hall leads the Jets with 692 yards rushing and four touchdown runs, and he also has 401 yards receiving and two scores on 46 catches. A pair of rookies helped New York offset Hall's absence last weekend, with Braelon Allen rushing for 43 yards on 11 carries, and Isaiah Davis getting 40 yards on 10 attempts and scoring his first rushing touchdown. “We’re hopeful and we’ll see how it goes,” Ulbrich said of Hall. The Jets will get star cornerback Sauce Gardner back after he missed a game with a hamstring injury, but New York's secondary appears likely to be without cornerback D.J. Reed because of a groin injury. Reed was listed as doubtful after he didn't practice Thursday or Friday. “It’s been something that’s kind of lingered here and there,” Ulbrich said. “It’s gotten aggravated and then it went away, and then it got aggravated again. So, it’s just dealing with that.” Backup Brandin Echols is out with a shoulder injury, so veteran Isaiah Oliver or rookie Qwan'tez Stiggers could get the start opposite Gardner if Reed can't play. Kendall Sheffield also could be elevated from the practice squad for the second game in a row. Ulbrich said kick returner Kene Nwangwu will be placed on injured reserve after breaking a hand last weekend at Miami. The injury came a week after he was selected the AFC special teams player of the week in his Jets debut, during which he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble in a loss to Seattle. “To put him out there with a broken hand, just thought it’d be counterproductive for him and for us as a team, so it unfortunately cuts the season short and what a bright light he was,” Ulbrich said. “What an amazing future I think he has in this league. With saying that, he’s already been a really good player for quite a while, so (it's) unfortunate, but he’ll be back.” Offensive lineman Xavier Newman (groin) is doubtful, while right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and RT Morgan Moses (wrist) are questionable. SMU feeling good heading into ACC opener against VirginiaAMD shares dip 2% amid AWS AI chip demand concernsThe US State and Treasury departments said they hit Georgian Dream party founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili with penalties “for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia for the benefit of the Russian Federation”, according to a statement. The designation of Mr Ivanishvili is the latest in a series of sanctions the US has placed on Georgian politicians and others this year. Those sanctions include freezes on assets and properties those targeted may have in US jurisdictions or that might enter US jurisdictions as well as travel bans on the targets and members of their families. “We strongly condemn Georgian Dream’s actions under Ivanishvili’s leadership, including its ongoing and violent repression of Georgian citizens, protesters, members of the media, human rights activists, and opposition figures,” the State Department said in a statement. “The United States is committed to promoting accountability for those undermining democracy and human rights in Georgia.” Mr Ivanishvili is a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia and served briefly as Georgia’s prime minister. In 2012, he founded Georgian Dream, Georgia’s longtime ruling party. Critics have accused Georgian Dream of becoming increasingly authoritarian and tilted towards Moscow. The party recently pushed through laws similar to those used by the Kremlin to crack down on freedom of speech and LGBT+ rights, prompting the European Union to suspend Georgia’s membership application process indefinitely. In October, Georgian Dream won another term in a divisive parliamentary election that has led to more mass protests. Last month, the country’s prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced a four-year suspension of talks on Georgia’s bid to join the European Union, fuelling further public outrage.Top 10 leading startup cities in India 2024 including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Gurugram and more
