Terming Manmohan Singh one of India's most distinguished leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the late Congress leader made extensive efforts to improve people's lives. Per the report, part-time tax consultant Lori Mosura abandoned the Democratic Party and backed Trump because, in her opinion, "He is more attuned to the needs of everyone instead of just the rich." She added, "I think he knows it’s the poor people that got him elected, so I think Trump is going to do more to help us." Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the first person of India's minority Sikh faith to hold that office, died in New Delhi on Thursday at age 92. A renowned economist, he was known as the father of economic reforms in India but was seen as a weak leader by many, including some within his party, the Indian National Congress. "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji," Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X. "Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. ... As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people's lives." Singh served as prime minister between 2004 and 2014, but political commentators say it was his time as finance minister in the early 1990s that was most significant. His policies during that period set India on the path of economic liberalization and globalization. "Wise, thoughtful, and scrupulously honest" is how former U.S. President Barack Obama described Singh in his memoir A Promised Land. Singh was born on Sept. 26, 1932, in a village called Gah in what is now Pakistan. His family migrated east when Great Britain divided the subcontinent into independent India and the Muslim-majority nation of Pakistan in 1947. The partition triggered mass migration and sectarian violence that killed hundreds of thousands of people, including Singh's grandfather. An Oxford-educated economist, Singh in 1991 drafted what economists call one of the most radical budgets in India's history: It opened up the country to the free market. "Let the whole world hear it loud and clear. India is now wide awake," Singh proclaimed during his budget speech . "The budget declaration was a shocker because it almost turned on its head most of what was the received economic wisdom of the day," says Rajesh Chakrabarti, a finance and public policy expert. Until 1991, Chakrabarti explains, India had been a socialist, public sector-dominated and import-restricted economy. When Singh became finance minister, the situation was dire. India was in a severe balance of payments crisis. "We were importing far, far more than what we were exporting, and our foreign exchange reserves had touched a low," says Chakrabarti. "India had to actually ship out gold — that means physically putting its gold reserves in ships and sending them to [banks in] London, to get money for running the economy." Singh's landmark budget opened India's economy to foreign direct investment, cut import duties and put an end to the Permit Raj, a complex system of regulations and red tape that discouraged private investment. In 2004, Singh was once again thrust into the limelight when Sonia Gandhi, the Italian-born matriarch of the Congress party, named Singh to the top job after she declined to become the prime minister following the party's landslide victory. But critics called him the Gandhis' " puppet ," ridiculed his soft-spoken manner and said he lacked oratory skills. "Humility was his strength and, at some level, his weakness, because he could not play to the gallery," says Rasheed Kidwai, author of a book on the Congress party. Even so, he steered India through several international and domestic crises, says Kidwai. "When the world economy tottered in 2008, India stood firmly," he says. While Singh was in office, "there was no confrontation with difficult neighbors like Pakistan and China," despite a deadly 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai by Pakistani militants. Kidwai says Singh was particularly successful when it came to foreign policy. "He was not one-dimensional," he says. "[Singh] had very good relations and functional ties with Iran, and at the same time he was highly welcomed in Saudi Arabia." Under Singh's leadership, India drew closer to the U.S. on multiple fronts. Notably, the two countries agreed to a nuclear deal lifting a decades-long moratorium on nuclear trade. Singh's other achievements included accelerating India's economy and launching a social welfare program that guaranteed employment in rural areas. But his second term was marred by corruption scandals followed by the worst-ever defeat for his Congress party in the 2014 national elections. Singh did not run again for office in those elections, which were swept by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. He was absolved of wrongdoing in the corruption scandals. After leaving office, Singh continued to live in Delhi with his family. He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, a historian, and their three daughters. With countless videos catching the attention of the news media and social media users daily, there are likely wild videos you'll recall from 2024 that we overlooked. Still, we're taking time to look back at compelling videos that captured the attention of the nation — and the world — over the past year. From a whale breaching and landing on a boat to first responders making dramatic rescues, here's a look at some of the wildest videos we saw in 2024: Two people were thrown into the ocean after a whale landed on their fishing boat off the New Hampshire coast on the morning of July 23, and the entire incident was caught on video. The wild video shows the whale breaching, propelling fish out of the water. As the massive animal's mouth closes, it flops over onto the rear of the nearby fishing boat with two men aboard. See the video in the player above. A driver was saved from a fully submerged pickup on Sept. 11, 2024, in New Orleans as Hurricane Francine prompted a flash flood emergency. A good Samaritan, Miles Crawford, was in the area and when Crawford figured out what was happening he ran back to his home, grabbed something to break the truck window and saved the man’s life. A dramatic video captured in November shows a man being rescued after dangling from the edge of a cliff in San Francisco, California. The California Highway Patrol helicopter responded to the scene as the man struggled to hold on. A video released by the California Highway Patrol shows a crew member being lowered from the helicopter by a hoist to grab the man. The San Francisco Fire Department said the man did not sustain any injuries. A snowboarder narrowly escaped an avalanche on Mount Washington's Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire in December 2024. It was all caught on camera. Patrick Scanlan, of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, said that while such situations are common, it is rare to catch such a scenario on camera. He said the incident serves as a crucial reminder for those eager to hit the slopes early in the season. The avalanche happened to be on a low angle and was moving slowly. The partial failure of the Rapidan Dam in Minnesota forced a landmark in Mankato to fall into the Blue Earth River . An 11-year-old boy recorded a dramatic video of the structure collapsing into the water. The house belonged to the owners of the Rapidan Dam Store, but fortunately, no one was home at the time. Due to Minnesota's historic flooding, the ground under the house had been undermined by water rushing around the 114-year-old dam, which partially failed in late June. A small plane made an emergency crash landing on the golf course in Northern California on Aug. 4. It came to rest at the pro shop, the Sacramento Fire Department said. The pilot walked away with a minor cut to his hand. No one else was hurt. Video shows several sunbathers at a popular Rhode Island beach screaming in late July when an enormous swarm of dragonflies suddenly overtook them. It happened at the crowded Misquamicut Beach, in Rhode Island. A dog was blamed for sparking a fire at an Oklahoma home in early August. The Tulsa Fire Department shared a video showing a dog getting a hold of and chewing on a lithium-ion battery that appeared to be in some type of charger. The dog chewed on it until the battery exploded, causing a dog bed to catch fire. Cameras were rolling when the ground opened up and swallowed part of a soccer field in Illinois in June. Aerial footage of the scene, which was provided by KMOV , shows the massive hole that was left behind on the athletic field in Alton, Illinois, which is around 22 miles outside of St. Louis, Missouri. The sinkhole opened up on Wednesday, June 26, and as a video shows, it even swallowed a stadium light post on the property. The sheriff's office said the individual was climbing back down the tower after livestreaming a video to his social media. The aviation team was able to direct ground deputies to the location of the climber. Koalas are normally found in eucalyptus trees, but one couple came home in Australia were were shocked to come home one November day to find one in their bedroom . Video showed the koala scurrying around the house, presumably looking for a way out, as Fran Dias Rufino, the homeowner, screamed frantically in the background. Koalas rarely attack people and are most often seen at the tops of trees, lazily chewing eucalyptus leaves. Rufino said her husband later used a blanket to shoo the koala away, and it found its way to the door. A life-saving scene played out on Sept. 12 on a busy stretch road in Michigan with a heroic act by a sheriff's deputy . Deputies Nicole Miron and Anthony Gross, with the Macomb County Sheriff's Department, were notified that a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck was driving erratically. Gross was driving, and Miron rolled down her window and tried to get the driver to stop, but he appeared to be in a daze. The driver managed to briefly hit his brakes and that's when Miron climbed from her passenger seat into the moving truck. The deputy was able to stop the truck.Sarae Croley-Battle posted 20 points with eight rebounds and four assists while Alyssa Iduh recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead Piscataway to a 62-48 win over Woodbridge at the Woodbridge Holiday Tournament.
