The Cornhuskers (4-1) held preseason All-American Ryan Kalkbrenner to four points — all on free throws — while winning on their in-state rival's home court for the second time in the past three seasons. Texas Tech transfer Pop Isaacs scored 25 points for the Bluejays (4-1), while Kalkbrenner had 11 rebounds. Wisconsin transfer Connor Essegian had 15 points for Nebraska. For decades, spacefaring nations have launched thousands of satellites and other objects into orbit, which have become vital to modern life. However, when these satellites age and stop functioning, ever wondered what happens to them? According to NASA , many fragments or objects of these satellites remain in the ever-expanding space junkyard. These objects continue to float in the low-Earth orbit as they are too expensive to be removed. However, these pose severe threats to future satellites and crewed space missions. Recently, in November, the International Space Station took precautionary action to avoid a piece of space junk. A Russian cargo ship docked at the station fired its thrusters for over five minutes to create extra distance between the ISS and the incoming debris, which came from a defunct meteorological satellite. While the object wasn’t on a direct collision course with the station, NASA deemed the manoeuvre necessary to ensure additional safety as it passed by. All this junk floating around in space can lead to a theoretical scenario which is known as the Kessler Syndrome. Space Junk is the debris comprised of old non-functional satellites and other man-made objects that continue to float in the Earth’s orbit. This space debris includes spacecraft, spent rocket boosters and even astronaut’s tool bags they lost during the mission. Since the space age began in the 1950s, around 50,000 tons of material have been launched into orbit, with over 13,000 tons of space objects currently in space as of September 2024. Of the 19,590 satellites launched since 1957, 13,230 remain in orbit, with 10,200 still operational, according to the European Space Agency which cited the data from the U.S Space Surveillance Network. As of December 2022, the International Space Station had performed 32 manoeuvres to avoid space junk since 1999, according to NASA’s 2022 quarterly report. By October 2023, this number had risen to 37, including two in August of that year. The ISS conducted its 39th Pre-Determined Avoidance Manoeuvre in November of this year. The scientists also revealed that it is not a big deal for the space debris crash on Earth’s surface. A family in Naples, Florida filed a complaint against NASA and demanded $80,000 in damages after a piece of space debris from the International Space Station crashed through their house roof, earlier this year, as reported by USA Today. ESA warned that the increasing space debris could lead to a theoretical scenario turned into reality i.e. the Kessler Syndrome that if left unchecked, the growing accumulation of space debris could lead to a dangerous cascade of collisions. As debris multiplies, it could eventually render Earth's orbit unusable for space travel. Last year, Holger Krag, ESA's head of Space Safety said, “We are seeing a dramatically increased use of space, but still insufficient technology to prevent the risks that follow,” in a statement.

Global stocks mostly rose Tuesday, with US and German indices posting records, as markets weighed Chinese stimulus hopes, political tensions in France and the US interest-rate outlook. The NFL suspended Tennessee Titans safety Julius Wood six games on Tuesday for violating the policy on performing-enhancing substances. There are five games remaining this season for the Titans (3-9), so Wood's suspension will bleed into Week 1 of 2025. Wood, 23, went undrafted this spring and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent. They waived him in August, and he caught on with the Titans, who claimed him off waivers. Calgary is getting its second blast of winter in less than a week. Weather warnings have been issued across southern Alberta for 15 to 25 centimetres of snow this weekend on the heels of the season’s first big snowfall Nov. 18. Light snow started this morning, though heavier precipitation will begin in earnest on Nov. 23 and end by Nov. 24. This latest bout of snow forced clearing crews in Calgary to reset their snow plan to focus on “priority 1s” and “priority 2s,” plowing and de-icing major business routes, meaning “priority 3” residential zones will stay wet for a while longer. While city snowplows tackle most of the majors roads, some highways and parts of Calgary’s ring road remain partly covered in snow. The prairie snowstorm could cause drivers to experience sudden, reduced visibility, and highways and road surfaces could be difficult to drive because of the growing pile of snow, Environment Canada said. Accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres will form Nov. 22 amid bursts of heavy snow. Nov. 23 will bring the lion’s share of snowfall with 10 to 15 centimetres expected, before tapering off in the evening. This second bout of winter weather began Nov. 21, when a low pressure zone triggered a “bomb cyclone” system that lashed parts of B.C. before moving further east. The storm hit Southern Alberta and is expected to spread northward through the province. Not everyone is complaining about the sudden wintry weather, though. After a delayed snow season due to warmer-than-usual temperatures, Calgary-based WinSport stated it will open its skiing facilities soon. The sporting non-profit put off its planned Nov. 22 opening due to the mild conditions, but is set to welcome skiers to hit the slopes on Nov. 29.
