At the time of his presidency, from 1829 to 1837, Jackson enslaved 95 people, and for nearly a century, more than 300 people were enslaved by the Jackson family. "It is historically significant, after decades of searching, that we are highly confident we have found the cemetery for people who were enslaved at The Hermitage," Jason Zajac, president and CEO of the Andrew Jackson Foundation, said in a statement . During the late 18th and early 19th century, Jackson trafficked people between his home in Nashville and other parts of the U.S. South, and slavery was a primary source of his wealth . When he became the seventh president of the U.S., he brought people he enslaved to the White House . In 1804, Jackson purchased 425 acres (172 hectares) of land in Nashville and named the property The Hermitage. By the time of Jackson's death in 1845, the plantation had grown to encompass more than 1,000 acres (405 hectares). Although the land has changed hands over the years, "nothing has ever been built on the [cemetery] site and crops have never been grown there," Tony Guzzi, chief of preservation and site operations at The Hermitage, said in the statement, "keeping it as undisturbed as possible over the last 180 years." Archaeologists discovered the cemetery in January about 1,000 feet (305 meters) from the main plantation house, on a slight hill at the edge of a creek, after experts used maps, surveys and aerial images to identify graves that were referenced in a 1935 report. The team cleared invasive plants from a 5-acre (2 hectares) search area, which allowed them to see rows of depressions that strongly suggested the presence of a cemetery. To avoid disturbing the graves, the archaeologists used ground-penetrating radar, which "is a crucial first step for characterizing unmarked burial sites such as this one," Steven Wernke , an archaeologist at the Vanderbilt Institute for Spatial Research, said in the statement, "as it identifies probable locations of the final resting places of the individuals buried at the Hermitage." — Long-lost homestead of King Pompey, enslaved African who gained freedom, found in colonial New England — Plantation slavery was invented on this tiny African island, according to archaeologists — Enslaved people were kidnapped from all across Africa, rare look at DNA from colonial cemetery reveals "Locating the physical remains of these individuals is a strong reminder of what this landscape was and what it represented — historically, an elite white space, a plantation and a place of enslavement sustained by arduous labor and sacrifice of Black bodies," Carlina de la Cova , a bioarchaeologist at the University of South Carolina who was not involved in the project, told Live Science in an email. Although the radar study identified 28 possible graves, "not all of them may turn out to actually be graves," according to Zajac, and additional graves may be found in the future. "Our work here is just beginning," he said. Pam Koban, the board chair at the Andrew Jackson Foundation, said in the statement that the cemetery "will become an educational staple that is central to the story of The Hermitage." The Foundation is working to assemble an advisory committee of historians and descendants of people who were enslaved on the property to help make decisions about how to preserve and present the site, Koban said.US agencies should use advanced technology to identify mysterious drones, Schumer says

Dear Heloise: When traveling, I throw a dryer sheet in the bag that holds my shoes. I also put a dryer sheet in each of my gym shoes at home. To freshen my clothes quickly, I put them in the dryer with a dryer sheet on the air cycle. I reuse ones from the dryer to dust with. My sisters place dryer sheets under their bedsheets. Others rub a dryer sheet on their sofas! I love and use many of the suggestions you and others have printed in your column. -- Jackie, Colorado Springs, Colorado SEND A GREAT HINT TO: Heloise@Heloise.com SHREDDED PAPER Dear Heloise: You're a big fan of recycling items, so I thought you might be interested in what we do with shredded paper in our office. Three of us have family in other countries, so we often have to mail Christmas gifts. We have a paper shredder, and when it comes time to empty it, we dump the paper into large plastic bags and save it in a closet. We later use that paper when we mail gifts for various occasions such as weddings, birthdays and Christmas. The word got out, and now there are a couple of other offices in our building that come down for some "packing material." -- Anne H., Milford, Delaware MICROWAVE FUDGE Dear Heloise: When I lived at home, my mother insisted on doing the cooking. She said I always made a mess of her kitchen. In college, we had our meals in the dining hall, so I never really learned how to cook. But now I have my own place, and I would like to make a recipe I saw in your column a couple of years ago. I don't know the name of it, but it was a fudge recipe where you could microwave the ingredients. It sounded good and so easy to make. Would you reprint this recipe? I want to take it to a family gathering for Thanksgiving. -- Jeffery M., in Boulder, Colorado Jeffery, the recipe you're thinking of was called "Matthews' Microwave Fudge," and it was indeed very easy to make. Here is the recipe: -- 1 pound of powdered sugar -- 1/2 cup cocoa -- 1/4 teaspoon butter or margarine -- 4 tablespoons milk -- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract -- 1 cup chopped pecan or walnuts Combine all the ingredients except the nuts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until all the ingredients in the mixture are melted and smooth. Remove and stir periodically. When the mixture is smooth, remove it from the microwave and stir in the nuts. Spread the fudge into a buttered 9-by-5-inch loaf pan and allow it to cool completely before cutting it into bite-sized pieces. -- Heloise REUSING STOCKINGS Dear Heloise: Last week while I was making soup, I wanted to put certain spices in a square of gauze or cheesecloth and found that I had neither in my house. I looked around and finally found a clean nylon stocking I no longer wore or needed. I placed the spices in a square I had cut from the nylon stocking and tied it at the top! It worked very well! -- Louella T., Livingston, MontanaMarianne Williamson launches bid to become next DNC chairIsrael strikes Houthi rebels in Yemen's capital while the WHO chief says he was meters away

Whilst Carlos ‘Black Jag’ Ulberg failed to secure his sixth finish under the UFC banner, the New Zealander was able to extend his winning streak to seven with a hard-fought victory over veteran Volkan Oezdemir at UFC Macau. Following the unanimous decision victory out in China earlier today, the popular Kiwi would call for a fight against former UFC light heavyweight title challenger, ‘The War Horse’. Carlos Ulberg calls out former UFC title challenger after win in Macau Carlos Ulberg vs Volkan Oezdemir on the main card of UFC Macau wasn’t exactly the barnburner that fans were hoping for, but it was still an entertaining fight that played out mostly on the feet. Ulberg was able to control much of the bout with his superior distance management and when the time came, cracked the Swiss veteran with some powerful straight shots; ultimately, the significant strike stats read 98-96 in favor of the Kiwi, as did the judges’ scorecards. Despite the knockout shot eluding him, the fight went according to plan from start to finish as he told Maddyn Johnstone-Thomas that “the main thing was for me to keep my range, make him miss and make him pay. “I’m most proud of having to use my right hand this time, I’ve been using the left hand to try to find the knockout [before] but just to stay focused and go the full three rounds against a veteran in the game, I finished him at his own game.” Whilst Ulberg didn’t get the chance to call out anyone in the octagon, he did have one name in mind when he spoke with the UFC News crew after its conclusion... ‘The War Horse’. “Obviously, Khalil had that opportunity last time so I think for our next step, my next step would be against someone like Khalil Rountree Jr .” UFC MACAU : Petr Yan sends message to Dvalishvili after flawless win over Figueiredo Rountree is coming off a tough fourth-round knockout loss to Alex Pereira and currently sits as the #6 ranked light heavyweight in the world – ahead of Tuesday’s update, ‘The Black Jag’ hunts from the #10 spot. Should Rountree want some extra time to rest and recover from that Pereira fight, Ulberg noted that he’d love to make his return at UFC 312 in February 2025 – which takes place at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. “It would be nice, it’s always nice to compete in front of our home fans but if anyone else closer to the title would be ready to fight me in such a short space of time, yeah.” Social media reacts to Carlos Ulberg going the distance with Oezdemir Volkan Oezdemir represented the biggest test that Carlos Ulberg has faced in the octagon to date, something that isn’t lost on his supporters. Whilst the vast majority of fans had the fight going in Ulberg’s favor, that isn’t to say that the global MMA community was unanimously impressed with his unanimous decision victory. In fact, there are countless posts floating around social media suggesting that whilst Ulberg is Top 10 material, he isn’t quite there when it comes to the upper echelon of the 205lb division.
