No. 24 Louisville women use 16-0 4th-quarter run to beat Colorado 79-71CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday's 44-38 loss to AFC North rival Pittsburgh can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It's become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can't close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He'd just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn't punt until early in the fourth quarter. Burrow lost two fumbles and threw an interception. “We haven’t done enough to earn the win,” coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s a simple as that. It’s nobody else’s fault but our own. We haven’t earned it.” What’s working Turnovers aside, Burrow had another strong game, finishing with 28 for 38 for 309 yards with three touchdowns. Burrow is having a great season statistically, and he hasn't hidden his disappointment and frustration about Cincinnati's narrow losses. ... WR Ja'Marr Chase had a touchdown catch to bring his league-leading total to 13. What needs help The defense missed tackles and couldn't hold off the Steelers, even with Burrow keeping the game close. It didn’t help that LB Logan Wilson (knee) and DT Sheldon Rankins (illness) had to sit out. The Bengals have allowed 34 or more points six times, including in four of the past five games. Cincinnati became the first NFL team to lose four games in a season in which it scored 33 points or more. Stock up RB Chase Brown has been dependable as the featured back since Zack Moss went down with a neck injury. He rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He also had three catches for 30 yards. The second-year back has 677 yards rushing and six TDs. “He’s really coming along, improving his game every single week,” Burrow said. “Pass game, run game, running hard, understanding his protection responsibilities. He’s a guy that practices hard, plays hard, and a guy you can count on.” Stock down The Bengals' coaching staff. Something has got to give. There was no excuse for the defense to play this badly after a bye week. The unit gave up 500-plus yards for the second time this season. Injuries None were reported in the game. Key number 30.3 — The average points per game by the Bengals against teams with a .500 or better record this season. They are 0-7 in those games. Next steps The Bengals will try to regroup before facing the Dallas Cowboys (5-7) next Monday night. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Mitch Stacy, The Associated Presspanalo.999

There are lots of reasons some people who want to get into the stock market never actually start buying shares. One is a lack of funds. But in reality it is possible to invest with just a few hundred pounds (or even less). Another is a lack of knowledge. But, although experience can help, the way I am buying shares now is the same way I would if I had my first stock market moment all over again. How I invest £500 When I have £500 to invest, what I do with it depends on how much else I may already have invested. That is because an important risk management principle is diversifying across different shares in case one (or more!) is disappointing. So, as I already have a portfolio of different shares, I am happy to put £500 into a single share. But I do not – ever – put all of my money into one company. If £500 was all I had, therefore, I would spread it over different shares. I want to invest efficiently, so I use a . In some situations, I use a or may consider using a . What I am looking for Before I start buying shares, I want to make sure I know as well as I can what I am getting into. So I stick to areas I think I understand, meaning I am better able to assess a company’s position and prospects. If I do not understand an area, I can always take time to do some research and improve my knowledge of it before investing. Next, I look for companies I think have a competitive advantage and a target market I expect to remain sizeable over time. One mistake new and experienced investors alike can make is not paying enough attention to a company’s accounts. If it has lots of debt on the balance sheet, that can make it unattractive. Profitable companies have gone bankrupt before now simply because they cannot repay their debt. I also look at . A good business can make for a poor investment if I overpay for its shares. Putting my money where my mouth is One share I think exemplifies my approach is my holding in asset manager ( ). The market for asset management is large and I expect that it will remain that way for the long term (which is my , by the way). With a strong brand, long asset management experience, and millions of customers in multiple markets, I see M&G as having competitive advantages. It aims to maintain or raise its dividend per share each year (although in practice that is never a sure thing). With a 10% dividend yield, the share is a lucrative source of for me. Will that last? One risk I see is that customers pulling more funds out than they put in could hurt profits. In M&G’s non-Heritage business, that happened in the first half of the year. I will be keeping an eye on that risk, as I do like the !AP Business SummaryBrief at 4:29 p.m. EST

Monarch Casino stock soars to 52-week high of $86.73Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, said Thursday he is withdrawing his name for the role -- just a day after Gaetz spoke with Republican senators on Capitol Hill about the nomination process. Trump has named Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, as his new pick for the role. Another controversial Cabinet pick, Pete Hegseth, is on the Hill on Thursday with Vice President-elect JD Vance to make his case for the secretary of the Department of Defense job. Meanwhile, Trump continues to announce his picks for top jobs inside his administration. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz , the website where users can purchase a personalized video from celebrity, a day after withdrawing from consideration to be the next attorney general. A source close to Gaetz confirms the account is real. He is currently charging more than $500 for a personalized video message from the platform. Former Rep George Santos also joined Cameo when he was ousted from Congress under much different circumstances. Santos, at one point, was selling videos for upwards of $500, but now has dropped his price to $250. Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who withdrew as President-elect Trump's attorney general pick on Thursday, said in an interview on Friday that he will not rejoin Congress. Gaetz told conservative media personality Charlie Kirk that he does not intend to run for Congress. "I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress," he told Kirk on America's Voices. Sen. John Thune, the incoming Republican leader, is currently at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club for a meeting, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. The meeting comes as Thune is likely to face massive pressure from Trump and his Senate allies to push through all of Trump's nominees as quickly as possible. Shortly after the news broke, Thune told ABC News he respected Gaetz's decision to withdraw from consideration for attorney general. "That's obviously a decision he came to, and I think everybody had to make a decision that’s good for them and their family. And for whatever reason he decided not to pursue it," Thune said. Trump has nominated Pam Bondi as his new pick for attorney general, after Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration earlier Thursday. Bondi is the former attorney general of Florida, serving from 2011 to 2019 and marking the first woman in that role. "For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans - Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again," Trump said in a statement. The position requires Senate confirmation. Bondi has remained in Trump’s inner circle for years and has continued to advise him on legal matters. She was also one of the lawyers who defended Trump during his first Senate impeachment trial. House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest of Mississippi told reporters that Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal from attorney general consideration "settles any involvement that the Ethics Committee should have in any matters involving Mr. Gaetz." He added that the withdrawal "should end the discussion of whether or not the Ethics Committee should continue to move forward in this matter." Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who earlier said he would not be the party’s Senate leader in the new Congress, announced Thursday he will be chairman of the Senate Rules Committee and the Defense Appropriations subcommittee when Republicans take control of the Senate in January. Both positions are significant, given McConnell’s strained relationship with Trump. The appointment to the Rules committee, which maintains the operating procedures of the Senate, is particularly interesting at a time when Trump has suggested he’s interested in pushing the boundaries of the Senate’s normal operating procedure. In his statement, McConnell said, “Defending the Senate as an institution and protecting the right to political speech in our elections remain among my longest-standing priorities.” McConnell could be instrumental in defense of the Senate filibuster or, potentially, recess appointments, which Trump has said he might use to circumvent Senate approval of some of his Cabinet picks, though party leadership still has the final say in these matters. The appointment to lead the defense appropriations subcommittee is also significant for McConnell, who has said he sees advocating on behalf of U.S. self-defense and the defense of U.S. allies as a critical part of his role post-leadership. He could use the post to advocate for additional funding for Ukraine. “America’s national security interests face the gravest array of threats since the Second World War. At this critical moment, a new Senate Republican majority has a responsibility to secure the future of U.S. leadership and primacy. I intend to play an active role in this urgent mission as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, and I look forward to working closely with incoming Chair Susan Collins to accomplish our shared goal,” McConnell said in his statement. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Matt Gaetz "has a bright future ahead of him" after the former congressman withdrew his name from attorney general consideration. "I've worked closely with Matt for eight years. He is an America First fighter -- dedicated to ending the weaponization of the Department of Justice which, after the abuses of the Biden-Harris Administration, needs serious reform," Johnson said on X. . is exactly right: Matt has a bright future ahead of him. "He made his decision to withdraw entirely out of respect for President Trump's administration. Matt is a patriot and I look forward to seeing what he does next," Vance, who joined Gaetz while he met with Republican senators on Capitol Hill Wednesday, added. On launch, the Hello Games title was slammed for being buggy and boring. The Guildford, England-based game maker had promised procedurally generated brilliance but fell somewhat short, at least in the eyes of early players. However, the title has received more than 35 named updates and five content patches in the eight years since its launch, and the hard work has clearly paid off. An ill-fated launch Following lengthy delays, No Man’s Sky finally launched in 2016. There was a lot of early controversy concerning a leaked early copy of the game and the fact that the gaming press did not receive official review copies. At the time, Hello Games said this was because there was a critical day one patch that was essential to the game. However, some game stores had started selling the title before its official release, so reviewers went ahead and bought their own copies. The subsequent reviews were of a buggy, somewhat broken game. The official launch and aforementioned day-one patch didn’t seem to do a great job of fixing the problems. The game held a lot of promise during announcements. Players were excited at the possibility of exploring some of the 18.4 quintillion unique planets generated. The problem with these procedurally generated planets is that they can’t possibly be checked by humans, and they were found wanting. Furthermore, while every planet might have been topographically unique, there was only a handful of planet types. After visiting a few ice planets, they all look and act the same. Players criticized the game for being boring. On launch, players also lamented the lack of decent storyline quests. They did exist, but they were very loose and did little to guide new players. Finally, the game lacked substantial features that were promised during the early hype, with multiplayer and base building being the most glaring omissions. Improvement and growth While No Man’s Sky can be held up as a prime example of how not to live up to game hype, Hello Games activity since that dreaded day should also be hailed as a huge success. Early updates improved the gameplay a lot, and subsequent releases have improved matters even further. Foundation brought base-building to the game. In the early days, it was still very limited. Players could only expand on existing bases, but it still added much-needed character. Pathfinder brought vehicles and base sharing. The former was a welcome relief as it cut down the tedium of traversing planets, some of which are monstrously big. Atlas Rises did a great job of improving the storyline. The original storyline was lackluster, at best. The Next update was another significant upgrade, this time bringing full multiplayer features and removing some of the base building restrictions. The updates released after launch added a ton of features and also greatly improved existing systems, fixing the bugs that were prevalent during the early days and completely turning the game around. No Man’s Sky was initially considered a technological and programming masterpiece but a gameplay failure. Five years after the launch of the game, Hello Games saw its Steam review move from “overwhelmingly negative” to “mostly positive.” Another three years later, it made the even more difficult transition to “very positive,” with “overwhelmingly positive” as the next target. At the same time, Hello Games, once criticized for poor communication, has been nominated for the 2024 Best Community Support award at The Game Awards 2024 What next for Hello Games? This year alone has seen the launch of Omega, Orbital, Worlds Part I, and Aquarius updates, while players can play or replay all of the year’s expeditions starting this year. As busy as the team seems to be, it is also working on an upcoming fantasy title, Light No Fire . It is another procedurally generated game, but this time only involves a single planet, and the team has likely learned from a lot of its early mistakes.

There’s only so much of substance that Canada can do to assuage President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mouse-elephant relations. To address his concerns over border security — namely illegal migration and drug smuggling — ideas now in play include putting RCMP cadets on patrol ... but it’s an awfully long border, and the Americans, with far greater resources, clearly don’t do a great job of policing their borders either. On the free-trade front, a Harris poll conducted for the Guardian published last week found 59 per cent of Republicans believe the new tariffs Trump is threatening against us would lead to higher prices at the cash register; 69 per cent of Americans believed it overall. Some of them support the idea anyway, in the name of “bringing jobs home.” That said, an Angus Reid Institute poll conducted in late October found just 16 per cent of Trump voters supported a “major tariff” on Canadian goods — versus 66 per cent for Chinese goods and 38 per cent on Mexican goods. So, American public opinion looks like less of an obstacle than Trump himself. Nevertheless, we’re bringing in the Mad Men to make our case: The Ontario and federal governments are both launching advertising campaigns that, if successful, might take some pressure off this country. Ontario’s television ad casts the province as something like America’s best and most faithful companion in all matters great and small. It comes on pretty hot and heavy! “For generations, this ally to the north has been by your side. Ontario, Canada, a partner connected by shared history, shared values, and a shared vision for what we can achieve together,” the narrator intones. In an implicit nod to the idea of cutting Mexico loose from NAFTA, the ad suggests Ontario and the United States “work together” to “bring jobs home.” I was reminded somewhat of a Doctor Who plot line in which evil aliens conquer Earth and brainwash humankind into believing they’re benevolent guardians. (Needless to say, the ad does not mention Canada’s powerful anti-trade dairy industry.) But the ad hits the right practical notes as well: “Ontario is your third-largest trading partner, and the number-one export destination for 17 states. Our longstanding economic partnership keeps millions of Americans working.” I have no idea if the ad will “work,” and neither I suspect do the people who designed it. But it struck me as a reasonable effort. Then there’s the federal ad campaign, which is designed to deliver sponsored links on search engines when people look for information about Canada’s asylum system. It’s the latest of several in recent years that attempts to convince people not to come here and try for refugee status, on account of they’re likely to be rejected. “Claiming asylum in Canada is not easy,” searchers will be told. “There are strict guidelines to qualify. Find out what you need to know before you make a life-changing decision.” That’s certainly good advice. “Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is working to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation about Canada’s immigration system, and to highlight the risks of working with unauthorized representatives,” a government spokesperson told Reuters. Doubtless there is much “misinformation and disinformation” out there on the subject, which “unauthorized representatives” — i.e., human smugglers — spread and exploit. But the problem with the central message being conveyed is that it is easily disprovable. Relatively speaking it is easy to claim asylum in Canada, and it is easy to get that claim accepted — especially for people from certain countries. Some 2023 statistics from the UN Refugee Agency : – Canada issued decisions on nearly 66,000 refugee claims, or 164 per 100,000 Canadians. The equivalent figure in the United States was just 95 per 100,000 Americans. – Of those claims, 99 per 100,000 Canadians were successful, versus just 19 per 100,000 Americans. – The top five countries producing successful refugee claimants to Canada were Iran (4,929), Turkey (4,928), Colombia (3,119), Mexico (3,071) and India (2,919). With nearly 10 times the population, the United States accepted refugee claims from just 662 Iranians, 1,564 Turks, 1,223 Colombians and 824 Mexicans. None of this is to suggest one country is doing it right and the other is doing it wrong — though when it can easily take two years to adjudicate a refugee claim, as it often does in Canada, it’s certainly being done wrong. The main point here is simply that the two countries do refugee-determination very differently, one much more generously than the other, despite the fact that both adhere to the same UN definition of a refugee. That’s always going to be a problem when the two countries have different visa provisions for citizens of certain countries and a gigantic, largely undefended border between them. In a scenario like that, almost every day is Christmas for human smugglers. An unfamiliar outside observer would probably suggest the two countries get their acts together and harmonize their rules and processes on visas and refugee-determination. Said observer would immediately be online-mobbed by furious Canadians, of course; it could become a political nightmare for any party that proposed it; and I don’t take particular pleasure in the idea myself. But it would be a natural extension of the free-trade relationship Canada wants to preserve and nurture. And it’s far more likely to advance our interests in Washington than any advertising campaign. Premier blasts 'unsubstantiated rumours' over turf clubIn its manifesto, Labour promised to tighten the rules around political donations. Officials are now examining a slate of ideas including donation caps and further restrictions on foreign cash. Change will take time, as the plans are still at an early stage and ministers are not due to bring forward proposals until at least 2026. But speculation that Elon Musk could donate $100m to Nigel Farage’s party, Reform UK , will trigger a fresh clamour for stricter rules. The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 stipulates that all donations and loans to political parties worth more than £500 must come from “permissible sources”. The key requirement for donors to be permissible, according to the Electoral Commission, is that they must be registered in the UK – either by being a voter on the electoral register or a UK company, trade union or LLP. They can also be unincorporated associations in the UK. Two potential avenues have been floated: either through the UK arm of the social media company X or by securing UK citizenship, which his father Errol has said he is eligible for because his grandmother was British. Labour has been critical of a reform ushered in by the Conservatives in 2022, which extended the franchise to overseas voters who have been away from the UK for more than 15 years. The change, which came after a protracted legal battle by the second world war veteran Harry Shindler, allowed Britons living abroad for more than 15 years to vote and donate to political parties. In opposition, Labour warned that this would “allow those with tenuous links to the UK, who have spent most of their lives in states that may even be openly hostile to our aims, the right to massively influence our system”. Labour has also previously called on the election watchdog to look into instances where the Tories appeared to have received donations from shell companies and firms that had ceased to exist. There are no limits, but campaigners have argued for them to be introduced for decades. Labour received millions during the last parliament from Gary Lubner, the former Autoglass boss; Dale Vince, the founder of gas and electricity supplier Ecotricity; David Sainsbury, the former chair of Sainsbury’s supermarkets; and his daughter, Fran Perrin. The Conservatives benefited from a series of big donations from the controversial businessman Frank Hester , who gave the party £20m between the start of 2023 and the 2024 general election. Mohamed Mansour, who served as a minister under former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, gave the party £5m . One of the heftiest donations in recent history was £8m from Sainsbury to the Liberal Democrats in the run-up to the 2019 election. Political funding in the US dwarfs that in the UK. Independent fundraising and campaigning groups called super political action committees (Super Pacs) can raise unlimited amounts of cash for presidential candidates – as long as they do not coordinate with candidates’ campaigns and disclose their donors. Musk’s Super Pac reportedly spent about $200m to help elect Donald Trump this year. There are concerns that the UK political donations system, which campaigners say is already not fit for purpose, is unprepared for the prospect of involvement from US billionaires such as Musk. From the Archive: In independent India - A struggle beyond freedomWien, Austria, Dec. 04, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aurora Finanzen , a rapidly growing trading platform specializing in delivering high-impact results for German investors, has officially cemented its position as the leading choice for crypto and financial trading in 2024. The star edge rusher has been a dominant force for San Francisco's defense this season, , and even an interception. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses is a cornerstone of the 49ers' pass rush, and his absence leaves a significant void. The injuries to Purdy and Bosa present a as they look to rebound from last week's loss. With key players sidelined, all eyes will be on how Allen and the rest of the team step up under pressure.Blame it on the food and drink?Amid an unprecedented cyberattack on telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon, U.S. officials have recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps to ensure their communications stay hidden from foreign hackers. The hacking campaign, nicknamed Salt Typhoon by Microsoft, is one of the largest intelligence compromises in U.S. history, and not yet fully remediated. Officials in a press call Tuesday refused to set a timetable for declaring the country’s telecommunications systems free of interlopers. Officials had previously told NBC News that China hacked AT&T, Verizon and Lumen Technologies to spy on customers. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. In the call Tuesday, two officials — a senior FBI official who requested to not be named and Jeff Greene, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency — both recommended using encrypted messaging apps to Americans who wanted to minimize the chances of China intercepting their communications. “Our suggestion, what we have told folks internally, is not new here: encryption is your friend, whether it’s on text messaging or if you have the capacity to use encrypted voice communication. Even if the adversary is able to intercept the data, if it is encrypted, it will make it impossible,” Greene said. “People looking to further protect their mobile device communications would benefit from considering using a cellphone that automatically receives timely operating system updates, responsibly managed encryption and phishing resistant” multi-factor authentication for email, social media and collaboration tool accounts, the FBI official said. The scope of the telecom compromise is so significant that Greene said it was “impossible” for the agencies “to predict a time frame on when we’ll have full eviction.” The hackers generally accessed three types of information, the FBI official said. One type has been call records, or metadata, showing the time and numbers that phone calls were made. The hackers focused on records around the Washington, D.C., area, and the FBI does not plan to alert people whose phone metadata was accessed. The second type has been live phone calls of some specific targets. The FBI official declined to say how many alerts it had sent out to targets of that campaign, but the presidential campaigns of both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, as well as the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told NBC News in October that they had been informed by the FBI that they had been targeted. The third has been systems that telecommunications companies use in compliance with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), which allows law enforcement and intelligence agencies with court orders to track individuals’ communications. CALEA systems can include classified court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which processes some U.S. intelligence court orders. The FBI official declined to say if any classified material was accessed. Privacy advocates have long advocated for the use of end-to-end encrypted apps. Signal and WhatsApp both automatically implement end-to-end encryption in both calls and messages. Google Messages and iMessage also can encrypt both calls and texts end to end. The FBI and other federal law enforcement have a complicated relationship with encryption technology, historically advocating against full end-to-end encryption that does not allow law enforcement access to digital material even with a warrant. But the FBI has also supported forms of encryption that do allow for some law enforcement access in certain circumstances. Despite the fact that the hacking campaign was first publicly disclosed in the lead-up to the election, the United States does not believe it was an attempt to sway results, the FBI official said, and is instead a massive but traditional espionage operation by China to gather intelligence on American politics and government. “We see this as a cyber espionage campaign, not dissimilar to any other approaches. Certainly the way they went about it was very, very specific about the telcos and the ISPs, but it fits into the cyber espionage bucket,” the FBI official said. In a statement to NBC News, Ron Wyden, D-Ore, one of the Senate’s fiercest privacy advocates, criticized America’s reliance on CALEA as it leaves such sensitive information unencrypted. “Whether it’s AT&T, Verizon, or Microsoft and Google, when those companies are inevitably hacked, China and other adversaries can steal those communications,” he said.

Tim Cook defends Vision Pro’s sales performance with three wordsSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers returned to the state Capitol on Monday to begin a special session to protect the state's progressive policies ahead of another Trump presidency. The Democratic governor, a fierce critic of President-elect Donald Trump, is positioning California to once again be the center of a resistance effort against the conservative agenda. He is asking his Democratic allies in the Legislature, who hold supermajorities in both chambers, to approve additional funding to the attorney general's office to prepare for a robust legal fight against anticipated federal challenges. Democratic Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel on Monday introduced legislation to set aside $25 million for legal fees to respond to potential attacks by the Trump administration on state policies regarding civil rights, climate change, immigration and abortion access. “While we always hope to collaborate with our federal partners, California will be ready to vigorously defend our interests and values from any unlawful action by the incoming Trump Administration,” Gabriel said in a statement. California sued the first Trump administration more than 120 times to various levels of success. “We’re not going to be caught flat-footed,” Newsom said at a recent news conference. Trump often depicts California as representing all he sees wrong in America. Democrats, which hold every statewide office in California and have commanding margins in the Legislature and congressional delegation, outnumber registered Republicans by nearly 2-to-1 statewide. Trump called the Democratic governor “New-scum” during a campaign stop in Southern California and has relentlessly lambasted the Democratic stronghold over its large number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally, homeless population and thicket of regulations. Trump also waded into a water rights battle over the endangered delta smelt , a tiny fish that has pitted environmentalists against farmers and threatened to withhold federal aid to a state increasingly under threat from wildfires. He also vowed to follow through with his campaign promise of carrying out the mass deportation of immigrants without legal status and prosecuting his political enemies. Before the special session was set to begin, state lawmakers swore in more than two dozen new members and elect leaders for the 2025 legislative session. Hundreds of people also demonstrated around the Capitol on Monday to urge the Legislature to try to stop Trump's mass deportation plans . They carried banners that said “Not one cent for mass deportation” and “MAGA out of California.” “With the results of the presidential election, we need our state elected officials to use every tool and every resource they have available to them to protect our immigrant Californians,” protester Deborah Lee said. State Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office will protect the state’s immigration population, while Newsom last week unveiled a proposal to revive a rebate program for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates a federal tax credit for people who buy electric cars. Newsom is also considering creating a backup disaster relief fund for the wildfire-prone state after Trump’s threats. Bonta announced legislation Monday aimed at bolstering reproductive rights in the state, including by allowing the attorney general to seek monetary penalties against local governments that infringe on those rights. The proposals are part of the state's efforts to safeguard against threats to abortion access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade . Republican lawmakers blasted Newsom and his Democratic allies over the special session. Rep. Vince Fong, who represents the state’s Central Valley farm belt, said California should work with the incoming Trump administration instead. “Gavin Newsom’s actions are tone-deaf to the concerns of Californians who disapprove of the direction of our state and country,” Fong said in a video on social media. Legislators also are expected to spend the year discussing ways to protect dozens of laws expected to be targeted by the Trump administration, including one that has made the state a sanctuary for people seeking abortions who live in states where such practices have been severely limited. California, the nation’s most populous state, was the first to mandate that by 2035 all new cars , pickup trucks and SUVs sold in California be electric, hydrogen-powered or plug-in hybrids. The state also extends state-funded health care to all low-income residents regardless of their immigration status. Newsom hasn't provided details about what actions the lawmakers will consider but said he wanted funding in place before Trump's inauguration day, Jan. 20. The state spent roughly $42 million in litigation costs during the first Trump administration, officials said. California is projected to face a $2 billion budget deficit next year, with bigger shortfalls ahead. Gabriel, who sued the first Trump administration in 2017 when it tried to end a program to shield young immigrants from being deported, said lining up the funding now is “a wise investment." California successfully clawed back $57 million between 2017 and 2018 after prevailing in a lawsuit to block the Trump administration from putting immigration enforcement conditions on certain federal law enforcement grants. Another legal victory over the citizenship question in the 2020 census forced the federal government to return $850,000 to the state, according to the attorney general's office. “We are positioned, if necessary, to be the tip of the spear of the resistance and to push back against any unlawful or unconstitutional actions by the Trump administration,” said Gabriel, who chairs the budget committee. During Trump’s first presidency, Democratic attorneys general banded together to file lawsuits over immigration, Trump’s travel ban for residents of Muslim countries, the environment, immigration and other topics. But Trump has one possible advantage this time around: He was aggressive in nominating conservative jurists to federal courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court. ___ Associated Press journalists Haven Daley and Sophie Austin contributed to this report. Vienna: The Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani stressed that just, comprehensive and enduring peace won't be achieved without the enforcement of international legitimacy's resolutions and Arab Peace Initiative; on basis of the two-state solution principle; and the establishment of the independent, Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. This was stated in a message from HH the Amir, on the annual event organized by the United Nations Office in Vienna to mark the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People". The message was delivered by HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Austria and its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and International Organizations in Vienna, Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi. In this message, HH the Amir said that solidarity with the Palestinian people this year earns a special significance, especially given the collective punishment and genocidal war those oppressed people are enduring, which spare no civilians, homes, infrastructure, schools, universities, places of worship, or hospitals, and affect thousands of children, women in refugee camps, patients, the wounded, ambulances, doctors, and humanitarian workers, who are all victims of this brutality. HH the Amir further emphasized that the occupying forces have not refrained from obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people and have engaged in their forcible displacement, in an unequivocal contravention of international humanitarian law. Consequently, solidarity with the Palestinian people today stands as, foremost, a resolute rejection of injustice and an unwavering affirmation of their inherent right to a dignified life on their land, as well as their fundamental right to self-determination. HH the Amir highlighted the overwhelming humanitarian consequences of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in widespread destruction of its cities and villages, and has spilled over into the West Bank and to the sister country Lebanon, stressing that it is imperative to urgently put an end to the violence and reaching a ceasefire that would halt the bloodshed, the humanitarian catastrophe, and the suffering of the prisoners and detainees. His Highness reiterated the State of Qatar's unwavering commitment to exerting every single possible effort in mediation to facilitate the achievement of an agreement that would accomplish this objective, underlining that the persistent failure of international community and the United Nations in halting the bloodsheds and double standards in enforcing the international law, international humanitarian law and human rights international law when it comes to the Palestinian people, albeit the clear international stances and demands, as well as the UN General Assembly's resolutions and the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s orders, will only lead to further bloodsheds, impunity and diminish the confidence in international laws and system. HH the Amir reiterated his utmost condemnation of the repeated assaults on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, emphasizing that any attempts to compromise the historic and legal status quo of Islamic and Christian sanctities in the occupied East Jerusalem, along with the temporal and spatial division of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the undermining of the freedom of Muslims to pray therein are attempts that are null and void under international law and the relevant United Nations resolutions. The State of Qatar is at the vanguard of countries that scramble to provide economic and humanitarian support for the brotherly Palestinian people, alongside the political and moral support, and has engaged in the humanitarian efforts to deliver urgent aid to the Gaza Strip and evacuated the wounded and their families, in addition to establishing field hospitals, emphasized HH the Amir. In addition, HH the Amir announced that the State of Qatar has increased its contribution this year to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and has pledged USD100 million to support humanitarian efforts for the Palestinian people. HH the Amir expressed his deep appreciation for the United Nations system, led by its Secretary-General, affirming solidarity with the international organization in the face of the relentless campaign targeting it and the legitimacy it represents, condemning attempts to undermine UNRWA. He expressed gratitude for the agency's efforts and the significant sacrifices it has made. His Highness lauded UNRWA's indispensable positive role on behalf of the international community in fulfilling its commitment to the Palestinian refugee issue until a final resolution is achieved, noting that millions rely on its humanitarian, health, food, and educational services, as it constitutes the backbone of international efforts to address the dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. HH the Amir reiterated at the conclusion of his message his gratitude to the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories (UNSCIIP), as well as the United Nations Division for Palestinian Rights, for their unwavering efforts in mobilizing international support to assist the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights.
