World reacts to ICC arrest warrants
Mr Carter, a former peanut farmer, served one term in the White House between 1977 and 1981, taking over in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. After his defeat by Ronald Reagan, he spent his post-presidency years as a global humanitarian, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His death on Sunday was announced by his family and came more than a year after he decided to enter hospice care. He was the longest-lived US president. His son, Chip Carter, said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love. “My brothers, sister and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” World leaders have paid tribute to Mr Carter, including US President Joe Biden, who was one of the first politicians to endorse Mr Carter for president in 1976 and said the world had “lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian”. He said: “Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. He added: “On behalf of the people of Ireland, may I express my sympathies to President Carter’s children and extended family, to President Joe Biden, to the people of the United States, and to his wide circle of colleagues and friends across the globe.” Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta and Washington DC before being buried in his home town of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and finally, the White House, where he took office as the 39th president. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked for more than four decades leading the Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. Under his leadership, the Carter Center managed to virtually eliminate Guinea Worm disease, which has gone from affecting 3.5 million people in Africa and Asia in 1986 to just 14 in 2023. Mrs Carter, who died last year aged 96, had played a more active role in her husband’s presidency than previous first ladies, with Mr Carter saying she had been “my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”. The family of Wicklow woman who was seriously injured in a collision in Siciliy two months ago have provided a new health update on her condition. Hannah Leonard was training for the Dublin Marathon on Friday, October 4, 2024, in Sicily when she was ‘sent flying across the road’ by a vehicle. The incident, where the young woman was launched ‘approximately 15 feet across the road’, occurred at a pedestrian walkway when Ms Leonard was in the final few kilometres of a long-distance run. After ‘landing on her head’, Ms Leonard ‘suffered devastating brain injuries’ and underwent three hours of life-saving neurosurgery where a large piece of her skull was removed in order to access her brain and relieve the pressure. Over two months on from the incident, Ms Leonard’s father Kevin wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser , set up to assist the family with medical costs, that his daughter is the hospital’s ‘longest resident’. ‘Our evening routine at visiting time remains the same, waiting in the ICU waiting room until the nurses to let us in. Looking around the waiting room, it is clear at this stage that Hannah is the longest resident, the faces have all changed since we began to visit with her. ‘The other families in the waiting room, while none of them have much English, are all very welcoming to us as and each evening they try to enquire about Hannah’s condition. The people of Catania are very similar to the Irish, kind, caring, compassionate and welcoming,’ he said. Mr Leonard said his daughter ‘had a run of clear tests for infection’, which were all negative, and her family is hoping she will be allowed ‘to move to the next stage in her recovery’. He went on: ‘Her team at the hospital tried a new approach which worked and we are so blessed to have them fighting in Hannah’s corner. For now we play a waiting game, the infection had been holding up her progress and now we wait for the prosthetic to arrive so the next surgery can be completed. ‘The doctors changed approach with the material for the prosthetic which meant it has been ordered from America and not from Europe. As of last night we know that it has made it as far as customs in Rome, so it now just needs to make it to Catania. ‘We still notice subtle changes in Hannah each evening, her left eye is fully open most nights and when we turn the corner into her ward it is like she is looking straight at us almost with an air of expectation,’ he said. The post continued: ‘Some nights as we visit she sleeps, it doesn’t stop us from talking to her. Other nights she is awake and gets a little more responsive each time. Her left eye following us, her mouth moving as if to join in with the chats, there were some reflex moves last night when her knees were squeezed. ‘All small but positive changes. We don’t think that we will see her right eye open until the prosthetic is in place. Hannah has been taken off a lot of the medication she was on, there is no need for the ventilator and she continues to maintain all her own organs. ‘We are over 9 weeks into this journey, which no doubt will be a long one but Hannah has the self determination and strong will to get through it. Her surgeon remarked that if she wasn’t so fit and mentally strong we would not be seeing the progress we are seeing.’ Adding that he tells Ms Leonard ‘how proud’ he is of her every night, Mr Leonard said the family’s strength is ‘taken not only from the loved ones’ but from the support they’ve received since her injury. ‘We hear many miraculous stories of people in similar situations which give us a lot of hope. The National Yacht Club generously used their end-of-year table quiz to raise funds for Hannah. One of Hannah’s best friends will be holding a music night in The Martello in Bray on December 22 and a group of her school friends are holding a raffle for her. ‘Our other children continue to get amazing support from their schools, Loreto Bray and Presentation College Bray.
