Mark Lewis wrote what appears to be his last regular column in the Sunday, Oct. 27 print edition of the Vail Daily. The question is why. Lewis in his column stated that the management of the newspaper had decided to “ stop publishing columns relating to national issues and politics and focus on local and state issues.” Over the last few years, I have read most of Lewis’s Sunday columns and I have found them to be fair, and well-balanced with facts on both sides of the issues discussed with the conclusions left to the reader to decide. To me, these columns were timely discussions on issues that affect our daily lives, whether the subject was local, state, national, or just items we are dealing with on a daily basis. As Lewis stated in his column, the newspaper has every right to determine what it decides to publish but the Vail Daily, as the leading newspaper voice in the Vail Valley, needs to accept the fact that most of its readers are intelligent and appreciate people like Lewis who take the time to express their views, which include items other than state and local. The readers deserve more than a “Vail Information Bubble.” Now back to the question of why. I understand that this was a decision made by the editor and the publisher of the Vail Daily, which they have every right to do. A Missouri circuit court judge on Monday declined to restore access to gender-affirming care for minors in the state, ruling in a 74-page judgment that a law banning children from accessing medical care is constitutional. The Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act, which bars medical professionals from providing hormone therapy and puberty blockers to anyone younger than 18, was signed into law by Republican Gov. Mike Parson in 2023. It also bans gender transition surgeries for minors (which are exceedingly rare ), bans prisons and jails from providing gender-affirming surgeries, and prohibits Missouri Medicaid from covering similar treatments for adults. Judge Robert Craig Carter of the 44th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri disputed the findings of medical experts in his ruling, citing a “total lack of consensus” on the medical ethics of treating gender dysphoria. “The evidence from trial showed that the medical ethics of gender dysphoria treatment for children and adolescents are entirely unsettled,” he added. Carter also suggested that treating gender dysphoria could be a slippery slope to depriving the Missouri legislature of its ability to regulate drugs. “Any person — including a minor — would be able to obtain anything from meth, to ecstasy to abortion so long as a single medical professional were willing to recommend it,” he warned. Lambda Legal, a national nonprofit that advocates for LGBTQ civil rights, together with the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri, argued the law is discriminatory on the basis of sex and therefore violates the Missouri Constitution. In the Christmas episode, former winner Sophie from season 8, Dan from season 9, Amelia from season 10, Linda from season 11, George from season 12, and Carole from season 13 are all on hand to compete again under the tent. They’re tasked with the three challenges typical of a Baking Show episode: a Signature Bake (holiday mince pies), the Technical (cinnamon snowflake bread), and a Showstopper, this one called a redemption cake, in which the contestants are told to redeem themselves with a new version of a bake that stumped them in the tent during their first go around on the show. In this episode, the returning bakers are all game for the challenge and haven’t missed a beat, seems that no one has lost any of their mojo under the tent. Typically the New Year’s episode features celebrity bakers, but this season’s festive episode features four more past contestants, season 12’s Jurgen and Maggie, plus season 13 contestant Maxy, and season 11’s Mark to compete in three more festive bakes. I wouldn’t go all out and say this episode is disappointing, but the bakers certainly have struggle moments during the first two challenges – the showstoppers are much more creative and successful, though. Through it all, Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond are on hand to root for (and distract) the competitors, while judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith debate the merits of each bake. Our Take: Watching the holiday episodes of The Great British Baking Show is bizarre experience because, despite the fact that I watch every episode of the series when it comes out, I have almost no memory of the bakers who return for the holiday series. Over the course of the episode, a vague sense of recognition returns, but I wouldn’t say that the return of beloved bakers is the selling point of these specials as much as it’s the general holiday merriment and decor that make these episodes special. You can practically smell the cinnamon and chestnut and orange wafting out of the TV thanks to the festive, holiday-inspired bakes, while the halls of the tent are decked out with boughs of holly and even more twinkle lights than usual. As one-off episodes, the holiday shows lack the thing that makes the regular Bake-Off series so addicting for many of us, the competitive arc, but they include all the other things we love about the show: the supportive and charming bakers, the silly jokes from Noel and Alison, Paul jamming a thick finger into under-proved dough. While the Christmas episode actually feels close and competitive, the New Years episode is more underwhelming, as none of the bakers have especially inspired or impressive bakes, but that’s the thing about this show – even an underwhelming episode still delivers. Performance Worth Watching: Since her arrival to the show, I’ve become convinced that Alison Hammond is the best host this show has seen since Mel and Sue. That case was tossed out earlier this year by a Trump-appointed judge on the grounds that Smith was unlawfully appointed. Smith cited the long-standing Justice Department policy of not indicting or prosecuting a sitting president in his motions to have the cases dismissed. This year, Guilfoyle was replaced at the Mar-a-Lago holiday festivities by Trump Jr.’s new girlfriend, Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson, the Daily Mail reported . Unfortunately for the new lovers, some Trump family allies and insiders are not happy about Anderson’s quick ascension into the family orbit, the Daily Mail also is reporting. The 37-year-old model and influencer was photographed seated next to Trump Jr. at the Christmas Eve dinner table, near the president-elect and his wife Melania Trump. Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner and their three children also attended the Christmas Eve dinner, Page Six reported . Some of the allies and insiders have told the Daily Mail that Anderson “isn’t MAGA enough,” while two friends of Trump Jr. expressed concern that she’s essentially a shallow influencer and “social climber” who is using Trump’s oldest son to snag an even wealthier and more powerful romantic target — someone like billionaire Elon Musk. “It’s one thing to worry about Palm Beach shenanigans making a stop at Mar-a-Lago,” a source close to the Trump transition team told the Daily Mail. “But to let those problems penetrate the White House is a new level of trouble.” The source appears to be referring to what the Daily Mail said was an “open secret” simmering in Palm Beach circles in the late summer and fall — how 46-year-old Trump Jr. had begun “fooling around” with the younger, Anderson, even while he was still engaged to 55-year-old Guilfoyle, a MAGA firebrand and top Trump campaign fundraiser. They straightened it out in overtime, no sweat, because Sam Darnold simply hasn't been fazed. Save for his occasional rash of turnovers, in games the Vikings still managed to win, Darnold proved again on Sunday in defeating the Bears that he's directing a passing attack with the potential to be one of the NFL 's most potent. “I think he’s a mentally tough guy. I think he’s a physically tough guy. I think he’s confident in the guys around him, and I think he’s confident in our system,” coach Kevin O'Connell said after the 30-27 victory. “I think when he just continues to play quarterback at a high level, I think we’re a tough team.” After the defense forced the Bears to punt on the opening possession of overtime, Darnold led the Vikings on a 68-yard drive to set up the game-ending field goal while overcoming a 7-yard sack on the first play and two subsequent setbacks with a false start and a holding penalty. On third-and-10 from the 21, he hit Jordan Addison near the sideline for 13 yards.
