But when it comes to Trump’s nomination of Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has for years spread lies and misinformation about vaccines, Cassidy wants a second opinion. “So I know that sounds novel around here, but I would like to talk to him,” he told The Independent, when asked about his thoughts on the conspiracist.He added that it “seems like a lot of stories are being written, and I have to make sure that I form my opinion on my own.” Cassidy is not alone. The Independent spoke to many of the Republican senators who are doctors and would be responsible for confirming Kennedy, and specifically asked them about his promotion of the debunked theory that vaccines cause autism . Almost uniformly, they did not want to speak about Kennedy’s promotion of health misinformation. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, an OB/GYN, remained mum. “I think it's a long answer, and I'm late for a meeting, so I'm not going to give you an answer,” Marshall told The Independent . Kennedy, the son of the late former Democratic attorney general and senator from New York, staged a campaign for president this cycle, first running as a Democrat to challenge President Joe Biden for the party nomination before running as an independent. Eventually, he dropped out and endorsed Trump. Since then, Kennedy has pledged to “Make America Healthy Again” and in particular target American food companies, as well as health researchers, for an overhaul. But his criticism of vaccines — particularly the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and his postulation that it causes autism — has raised the most alarm bells. In the past, Trump has also speculated about the link between vaccines and autism, once claiming that the United States was experiencing “an epidemic” of the developmental disability. But in 2020, Trump championed the creation of the Covid-19 vaccine during Operation Warp Speed. Kennedy has harshly criticized the Covid-19 shot, and made false claims about its safety. Paul, like Kennedy, criticized the scientific consensus around Covid-19, notably becoming the first senator to test positive for the virus in 2020 . WESTFIELD, N.J. -- Some residents in Central New Jersey say their water still has an odd taste and odor , forcing them to drink bottled water this holiday season. The issue started in the middle of last week for New Jersey American Water customers who use the Raritan water system. Dozens of towns across Union, Middlesex and Somerset counties have been impacted. The state's Department of Environmental Protection said its initial investigation revealed a leak last Monday from a repackaging facility in Branchburg into a tributary of the Raritan River. The facility repackages fragrances, essential oils, and flavorings. New Jersey American Water says testing has confirmed that the water is safe to drink and meets state and federal standards. Residents who have discolored water should run their cold taps only at the lowest level of their residence for about three to five minutes until the water runs clear. Additional updates will be posted on the American Water website . However, some residents say they are going the store-bought route, just to be on the safe side. "At a certain point, how much time and money do you want to spend on water? You know? So you just kind of make do with what you've got," resident Kevin Kast said. New Jersey American Water said the strange odor might stick around for a few more days. "It's just kind of suspect. You know what I mean?" Kast said. "It smells. Kurtis Rourke has made the Jon Cornish Trophy a family affair. The Indiana quarterback received the award Monday, which is presented annually to the top Canadian playing football in the NCAA. Rourke’s older brother, Nathan, currently with the CFL’s B.C. Lions, won the award twice in 2017 and 2018 at Ohio. “It’s awesome,” Rourke said. “Kind of getting introduced to the Jon Cornish Trophy back when Nathan won it a couple of times, I wanted to be able to have a shot and it was one of my goals to be in the conversation, be in the running. “It just means a ton to be recognized just because Canadian athletes don’t get recognized too often. I’m just so glad we’re able to get that recognition and continue to do it for our country.” Rourke finished first in voting ahead of Montreal’s Dariel Djabome, a junior linebacker at Rutgers. Stanford receiver Elic Ayomanor, last year’s winner, was third, followed by Vancouver’s Ty Benefield (sophomore safety, Boise State) and Jett Elad of Mississauga, Ont., a senior safety at UNLV.
