Capital Club shutdown jolts San Jose businesses, creates opportunitiesNEW YORK (AP) — Chuck Woolery, the affable, smooth-talking game show host of “Wheel of Fortune,” “Love Connection” and “Scrabble” who later became a right-wing podcaster, skewering liberals and accusing the government of lying about COVID-19, has died. He was 83. Mark Young, Woolery's podcast co-host and friend, said in an email early Sunday that Woolery died at his home in Texas with his wife, Kristen, present. “Chuck was a dear friend and brother and a tremendous man of faith, life will not be the same without him,” Young wrote. Woolery, with his matinee idol looks, coiffed hair and ease with witty banter, was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007 and earned a daytime Emmy nomination in 1978. In 1983, Woolery began an 11-year run as host of TV’s “Love Connection,” for which he coined the phrase, “We’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds,” a two-fingered signature dubbed the “2 and 2.” In 1984, he hosted TV’s “Scrabble,” simultaneously hosting two game shows on TV until 1990. “Love Connection,” which aired long before the dawn of dating apps, had a premise that featured either a single man or single woman who would watch audition tapes of three potential mates and then pick one for a date. A couple of weeks after the date, the guest would sit with Woolery in front of a studio audience and tell everybody about the date. The audience would vote on the three contestants, and if the audience agreed with the guest’s choice, “Love Connection” would offer to pay for a second date. Woolery told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2003 that his favorite set of lovebirds was a man aged 91 and a woman aged 87. "She had so much eye makeup on, she looked like a stolen Corvette. He was so old he said, ‘I remember wagon trains.’ The poor guy. She took him on a balloon ride.” Other career highlights included hosting the shows “Lingo," “Greed” and “The Chuck Woolery Show,” as well as hosting the short-lived syndicated revival of “The Dating Game” from 1998 to 2000 and an ill-fated 1991 talk show. In 1992, he played himself in two episodes of TV’s “Melrose Place.” Woolery became the subject of the Game Show Network’s first attempt at a reality show, “Chuck Woolery: Naturally Stoned,” which premiered in 2003. It shared the title of the pop song in 1968 by Woolery and his rock group, the Avant-Garde. It lasted six episode and was panned by critics. Woolery began his TV career at a show that has become a mainstay. Although most associated with Pat Sajak and Vanna White, “Wheel of Fortune” debuted Jan. 6, 1975, on NBC with Woolery welcoming contestants and the audience. Woolery, then 33, was trying to make it in Nashville as a singer. “Wheel of Fortune” started life as “Shopper’s Bazaar,” incorporating Hangman-style puzzles and a roulette wheel. After Woolery appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show” singing “Delta Dawn,” Merv Griffin asked him to host the new show with Susan Stafford. “I had an interview that stretched to 15, 20 minutes,” Woolery told The New York Times in 2003. “After the show, when Merv asked if I wanted to do a game show, I thought, ‘Great, a guy with a bad jacket and an equally bad mustache who doesn’t care what you have to say — that’s the guy I want to be.’” NBC initially passed, but they retooled it as “Wheel of Fortune” and got the green light. After a few years, Woolery demanded a raise to $500,000 a year, or what host Peter Marshall was making on “Hollywood Squares.” Griffin balked and replaced Woolery with weather reporter Pat Sajak. “Both Chuck and Susie did a fine job, and ‘Wheel’ did well enough on NBC, although it never approached the kind of ratings success that ‘Jeopardy!’ achieved in its heyday,” Griffin said in “Merv: Making the Good Life Last,” an autobiography from the 2000s co-written by David Bender. Woolery earned an Emmy nod as host. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Woolery served in the U.S. Navy before attending college. He played double bass in a folk trio, then formed the psychedelic rock duo The Avant-Garde in 1967 while working as a truck driver to support himself as a musician. The Avant-Garde, which tourbed in a refitted Cadillac hearse, had the Top 40 hit “Naturally Stoned,” with Woolery singing, “When I put my mind on you alone/I can get a good sensation/Feel like I’m naturally stoned.” After The Avant-Garde broke up, Woolery released his debut solo single “I’ve Been Wrong” in 1969 and several more singles with Columbia before transitioning to country music by the 1970s. He released two solo singles, “Forgive My Heart” and “Love Me, Love Me.” Woolery wrote or co-wrote songs for himself and everyone from Pat Boone to Tammy Wynette. On Wynette’s 1971 album “We Sure Can Love Each Other,” Woolery wrote “The Joys of Being a Woman” with lyrics including “See our baby on the swing/Hear her laugh, hear her scream.” After his TV career ended, Woolery went into podcasting. In an interview with The New York Times, he called himself a gun-rights activist and described himself as a conservative libertarian and constitutionalist. He said he hadn’t revealed his politics in liberal Hollywood for fear of retribution. He teamed up with Mark Young in 2014 for the podcast “Blunt Force Truth” and soon became a full supporter of Donald Trump while arguing minorities don’t need civil rights and causing a firestorm by tweeting an antisemitic comment linking Soviet Communists to Judaism. “President Obama’s popularity is a fantasy only held by him and his dwindling legion of juice-box-drinking, anxiety-dog-hugging, safe-space-hiding snowflakes,” he said. Woolery also was active online, retweeting articles from Conservative Brief, insisting Democrats were trying to install a system of Marxism and spreading headlines such as “Impeach him! Devastating photo of Joe Biden leaks.” During the early stages of the pandemic, Woolery initially accused medical professionals and Democrats of lying about the virus in an effort to hurt the economy and Trump’s chances for reelection to the presidency. “The most outrageous lies are the ones about COVID-19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, media, Democrats, our doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it,” Woolery wrote in July 2020. Trump retweeted that post to his 83 million followers. By the end of the month, nearly 4.5 million Americans had been infected with COVID-19 and more than 150,000 had died. Just days later, Woolery changed his stance, announcing his son had contracted COVID-19. “To further clarify and add perspective, COVID-19 is real and it is here. My son tested positive for the virus, and I feel for of those suffering and especially for those who have lost loved ones,” Woolery posted before his account was deleted. Woolery later explained on his podcast that he never called COVID-19 “a hoax” or said “it’s not real,” just that “we’ve been lied to.” Woolery also said it was “an honor to have your president retweet what your thoughts are and think it’s important enough to do that.” In addition to his wife, Woolery is survived by his sons Michael and Sean and his daughter Melissa, Young said. Supporters have clapped and cheered in court after a doctor who clashed with regulators over Covid-19 vaccines had a medical ban lifted. Dr William Anicha Bay had his registration as a medical practitioner suspended by the Medical Board of Australia on August 17, 2022 in response to five complaints involving his anti-vaccine activities. Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Thomas Bradley overturned that suspension on Friday after finding Dr Bay had been subject to "bias and failure to afford fair process" over complaints unrelated to his clinical practice. I have won 🏆 the right back to be a doctor 👨⚕️ and more importantly the right for all doctors to speak freely about #vaccines 😊. Truly, God has given me everything 🤲 Praise Jesus and thank you to my wonderful supporters without whom none of this would have possible. Freedom!!... pic.twitter.com/3KEUHMGnpY — The Victorious Dr William Bay🥼 (@DrBillyBay) December 13, 2024 Justice Bradley said he was not entering the debate about Covid-19 vaccines. "The court is concerned only with whether the decision or the conduct (of the medical board) was free from an error," Justice Bradley stated. One of the complaints was that Dr Bay had posted a social media video claiming Covid-19 vaccines had killed his patient and harmed others. Another complaint stated Dr Bay had attended an anti-vaccination protest outside the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) office in Brisbane in July 2022. A health professional filed a mandatory complaint that Dr Bay had interrupted an Australian Medical Association conference while live streaming video to the internet, yelling "stop forcing these vaccines on the people of Australia who are getting killed by them". The medical board found Dr Bay's public statements undermined medical regulators' "position on Covid-19 and the Covid-19 vaccination". It said his statements also "further contravenes the position of local, state and federal government and health authorities, which are in place to protect public health and safety". Justice Bradley said the Covid-19 pandemic was an "extraordinary period of history" in which governments encouraged widespread vaccine use. However, he said that did not allow the medical board to deny Dr Bay information about the complaints or disregard potential bias at hearings. "None of these measures extended the board's regulatory role to include protection of government and regulatory agencies from political criticism," Justice Bradley said. He ordered the medical board and AHPRA to cover Dr Bay's reasonable legal costs as the regulators had extended the proceedings and made partial admissions at a late stage.

Boys soccer photos: No. 8 Southern vs. No. 2 Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Group 4 final, Nov. 24, 2024It was 1942, and the Quit India movement just kicked off. A young K G Subramanyan was sent to Madras Presidency College to study economics, and he was doing well. But Subramanyan was no ordinary student. Coming from a politically charged Mahe in Kerala, where he picked up Marxian and later Gandhian ideals as a teen, nationalism ran in his veins. He organised a picketing at the Madras state secretariat and was sent to jail for six months. IPL 2025 mega auction IPL Auction 2025: Who got whom IPL 2025 Auction: Updated Full Team Squads As was the practice then, he was also debarred from studying in all govt institutions. But the jail stint changed something else in the idealistic youngster; he noticed that not all of his political peers were committed to the cause like him and realised politics was not his cup of tea. His paintings, which he was doing on the side, caught the attention of big names in art such as K C S Panicker, who invited him to study art instead of economics. He didn't join an art college in Madras; his elder brother wrote to Nandalal Bose, Principal of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in West Bengal, and got him a spot there, a move that changed the course of his life. "He moved from the political orbit of Gandhi to the cultural one of Tagore ," says Raman Siva Kumar, his student, associate, and colleague. "It inspired him to respond to the social and political environment through his art, unlike many of his contemporaries for whom art was still about Indian mythological figures." When Subramanyan finished his studies, India became independent, and the artist had to rethink his subjects, style, and mediums. Over his 70-year career—one of the longest for an artist—his work evolved from watercolours and pen on paper to terracotta, children's books, and reverse glass paintings. Post-independence, Subramanyan helped set up a project for vocational training for refugees of Partition. "In 1951, he joined MSU Baroda as a teacher. The profession changed his attitude towards art. Its analytical aspects became as important as expression." Sculptor Ratnabali Kant recalls in her biography of late husband Awani Kant, Subramanyan's student, how the artist advised him to carry a camera, sketchbook, and pencil for a week and start painting only once he found a subject that attracted him, for only then would he "start producing endlessly with pleasure." In a video interview with Priyamvada Kant, the couple's daughter, Subramanyan says, "Teaching and producing one's own works offer two kinds of happiness. A persistent teacher will only restrict a student's development. A teacher in fine arts has little to do for the development of the student except clear the air for them and not ‘consciously' teach. I just pretend to teach." Subramanyan belonged to the generation of progressive artists such as M F Hussain, who used modern cubist vocabulary, but his approach was more cautious, says Siva Kumar. While at the Slade School of Art in London (1956), he studied medieval art, which few other Indian modernists did. "By the late 1950s, he left Baroda to focus on craft, working as deputy director of design for the handloom board. Returning in 1961, he painted still life works with sand and pebbles." Subramanyan's aim was to create an artistic language of his own, not just a style, says Siva Kumar. In 1963, for Tagore's birth centenary, the Union govt commissioned a mural for the Tagore theatre in Lucknow. Inspired by the playwright's ‘King of the Dark Chamber', Subramanyan used 13,000 terracotta tiles, where individual units held no meaning but formed a narrative when grouped. "From a distance, you see abstract shapes, but once you get closer, you see the details," says Siva Kumar. In the 1960s, Subramanyan experimented with sand casting and textile murals, but works from this period, including those sold at the 1965 New York Trade Fair, remain undocumented, says Siva Kumar. The 1960s also saw him working on children's books, which were surprisingly monochromatic, and toys. He also tried glass painting in 2005. All through, his works continued to make political statements, reflected in the children's fables as well. "One story describes how the people made by God looked alike until God gave them a wardrobe and they started dressing differently. The clothes stick to their bodies, and they start fighting." He wanted his art practice to be outside the gallery space, says Abeer Gupta, curator of Arthsila in New Delhi. "He would give away his work to people as gifts for weddings or birthdays." Today, his work is priced at `5 lakh and more. Email your feedback with name and address to southpole.toi@timesofindia.com

Daily Post Nigeria Be more transparent with yours data billings – NCC tells network providers Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Sponsored Be more transparent with yours data billings – NCC tells network providers Published on November 24, 2024 By Daily Post Staff The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stressed the need to address consumer concerns over data depletion and billing transparency amid growing data consumption, fueled by digital advancements. According to the commission, Nigerians spend an average of 4 hours and 20 minutes on social media daily, far above the global average and underscoring how deeply embedded digital interaction is in our lives. Quoting DataReportal, the NCC noted that the world’s internet users are spending less time watching television, stressing that the average daily television viewing has fallen by over 8% in the past year, as viewers are now spending more time on their telephones, tablets, and smart TVs streaming programs that they would previously have watched on broadcast television. Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, who disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at the 93rd Telecoms Consumer Parliament with the theme “Optimising Data Experience: Empowering Consumers through Awareness and Transparency in a Consumer-Centric Telecom Industry”, noted that in 2024, Nigeria’s daily data usage averaged 336 gigabytes per second, marking a 39% increase from the previous year. He added that this is a clear indication of the data-driven lifestyle many Nigerians lead. He observed that despite this, many consumers feel their data depletes faster than expected, adding that earlier this year, NCC analysed consumer complaints, revealing data depletion and billing issues as top concerns. Maida stated that in response, the commission directed Mobile Network Operators and ISPs to conduct audits of their billing systems, which reported no major issues. He said, “However, perceptions persist due to two main factors, including the impact of high-resolution devices and improved technologies on data use, and the complexity of operator tariffs. With the advent of 4G and 5G, as well as devices with ultra-high-definition screens, data consumption has naturally increased. For example, while viewing a photo on Instagram might have required only 100 kilobytes of data five years ago, today, with advanced camera resolutions, a photo can consume between two to four megabytes when opened on Instagram. “According to Tech Advisor, an online resource that offers tech reviews, spending an hour on Instagram can use an average of 600 megabytes of your data, while streaming platforms like YouTube would use about 3.5 to 5.4 gigabytes per hour. Improved technologies go beyond their purchase cost to our pockets; they also come at a cost to data. Because they have better screen resolutions, they consume higher quality media that consumes more data. This is the same for our increasing digital habits: according to DataReportal, the world’s internet users are spending less time watching television; the average daily television viewing has fallen by over 8% in the past year. These viewers are now spending more time on their telephones, tablets, and smart TVs streaming programs that they would previously have watched on broadcast television.” Maida said that DataReportal notes there are now over 5 billion internet users, with Nigeria alone accounting for 132 million connections, pointing out that the commission is working to address consumer concerns about data usage. She added: “Recognizing these challenges, the Commission, in collaboration with major operators, launched a Joint Industry Campaign on Consumer Awareness on Smarter Data Usage. Our message emphasises empowering consumers with the knowledge to optimise their data usage. For example, many smartphone users may not know that their devices can track data usage and allow them to set limits on the amount of data they want to use.” He explained that high-definition streaming services like Netflix consume substantial data—about three gigabytes per hour in high definition, or seven gigabytes in ultra-high definition—adding that the Commission believes that an informed consumer is a better-equipped consumer, leading to a clearer understanding of data consumption and reducing misconceptions about data depletion. Maida lamented that the industry also faces challenges such as vandalism and theft of telecom assets, which frustrate operators’ efforts to deliver quality telecom services. He said that in July 2024, through NCC’s advocacy and collaboration with key stakeholders, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a Presidential Order designating telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure, stressing that this Executive Order strengthens the commission’s ability to address issues of vandalism, tampering, and unauthorised access to telecom infrastructure. The EVC noted that the current macroeconomic challenges and the rising cost of business in the country are impacting the ability of operators to make the necessary investments in the sector, stating that the Commission is mindful of this and is actively working with other arms of government and stakeholders to address these issues and ensure the industry’s sustainability. Also speaking, ALTON Chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, said that the demand for data has soared exponentially, adding that we are in an era where consumers rely on data to power nearly every aspect of their lives, including homes, cars, offices, and even places of worship. He observed that this growing reliance on data has also challenged service providers to meet and exceed customer expectations, adding that the service providers have taken significant steps to ensure enhanced data quality, expand coverage, and improve connectivity across Nigeria. Adebayo stated that the service providers have embarked on tariff simplification, which aims to provide consumers with a clear understanding of data costs and their choices. “Tariff simplification benefits consumers by offering them more straightforward and transparent data plans that are easier to compare and understand. With simplified tariffs, consumers can make more informed choices about which data packages suit their needs, budget, and usage patterns, empowering them to take control of their data experience. In response to the feedback from consumers, our industry has also concluded a comprehensive study on the reasons behind data depletion,” he added Related Topics: NCc Promoted Don't Miss NCC to resolve telecoms, banks’ USSD debt issue with CBN You may like NCC to resolve telecoms, banks’ USSD debt issue with CBN NCC moves towards digital justice ARO DAY 2024: Foremost Nigeria-born South African preacher to storm Arochukwu for Light of the World Crusade CustomWritings’ Professional Help with Quality PPT for Academic and Career Success Get Ready to #BeatTheDrop as Coke Studio 2024 Unleashes Next-Level Music, Culture, Rewards Zenith Bank rewards Hackathon Winners with N77.5m cash prize at Zenith Tech Fair 4.0 Advertise About Us Contact Us Privacy-Policy Terms Copyright © Daily Post Media LtdTwo Bendigo businesses have teamed up to help deliver an extra 361 hampers this festive season. or signup to continue reading Stonemans Village IGA and Keating's Transport were approached by Anglicare after an anonymous donation left the - but no workforce to put them together. One week after Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs lost for the first time in the 2024 NFL season, the defending Super Bowl champions rebounded with a close 30-27 win over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Chiefs held an 11-point lead heading into the final quarter, but the Panthers, led by second-year quarterback Bryce Young, stormed back to tie the game at 27 apiece with 1:46 remaining in the game. But Kansas City has an MVP quarterback of their own in Patrick Mahomes, who led the Chiefs 57 yards down the field to set up a 31-yard game-winning field goal by kicker Spencer Shrader as time expired. After the game, as Kelce was headed back to the locker room, a few Panther coaches passed by, which prompted the All-Pro tight end to comment on the Chiefs' win. "Good game, guys," Kelce said. Mahomes completed 73% of his passes for 269 yards and three scores while adding five carries for an additional 60 yards. The quarterback had the most crucial play of the day, putting the Chiefs in field goal position on a 33-yard scramble in the final minute. Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images With the win, Kelce and the Chiefs become one of two teams to reach the ten-win mark, along with the Detroit Lions. At 10-1, Kansas City still sits in first place in the AFC standings, with the 9-2 Buffalo Bills right on their rear. They will get AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, on Friday, Nov. 29, back at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Meanwhile, the Panthers, after winning their previous two contests, fall to 3-8 on the season, still holding a top pick in the 2025 NFL draft. They will remain home in Charlotte as they also take on a divisional foe in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 13. Related: Brittany Mahomes' One-Word Message To Patrick Mahomes After Chiefs-Panthers
