MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The top of the NFC standings are towering over the Green Bay Packers as they move toward the playoffs, casting a long shadow shaped like Vikings, Lions and Eagles over what has been an otherwise-promising season on both sides of the ball. For as well as the Packers (11-5) had been playing down the stretch, they left Minnesota with a rather murky outlook for the playoffs after stumbling into a 17-point deficit that proved too large for their late surge in the 27-25 loss to the Vikings on Sunday . “They continued to compete and battle, but you just can’t do that against good teams. The margins in this league, especially against a good football team, are razor thin," coach Matt LaFleur said. "I don’t think we were at our best, but that’s a credit to them in our slow start — and that’s me as much as anybody.” The Packers gained 126 yards in the fourth quarter and still finished with a season-low 271 yards. The defense allowed 441 yards, which was also a season worst. The most glaring set of numbers after this frustrating afternoon, though, was this: 0-5. That's Green Bay's record against the top three teams in the NFC: Minnesota, Detroit and Philadelphia. There's no shame in losing to those opponents that carry a combined 40-7 record into Monday, particularly when four of those defeats — save for the 10-point loss to the Lions on Nov. 3 — came by a total of 12 points. “It’s not about who we can and can’t beat. We can beat everybody. If we figure out how to finish, we’ll win games,” cornerback Keisean Nixon said. But the Packers will more than likely be on the road the entire time they're alive in the playoffs, so any path to the Super Bowl would undoubtedly trigger rematches with one, two or even all three teams from that daunting trio. The Packers clearly aren't overmatched by the Vikings, Lions or Eagles, but in games against those premier foes that significantly shrink the margins for error the Packers have shown a troubling pattern of not meeting the moment with too many ill-timed mistakes and not enough big-time plays. “It's hard when you put yourself in a hole and are down early and just kind of shooting yourself in the foot,” quarterback Jordan Love said. “There’s so much stuff to clean up and get better at, but I think we’re still a really good team. We can put up points. But when you put yourself in a hole, it’s just hard to climb out of that hole. And when it’s a good team like the Vikings, you know, it just makes it even tougher.” The red flag came right away. Josh Jacobs, the NFL 's fourth-leading rusher, had just given the Packers a second first down on the opening drive of the game when defensive tackle Jerry Tillery pushed the ball out and safety Cam Bynum recovered at the Minnesota 38. Jacobs had gone 11 straight games without fumbling until losing one at Seattle on Dec. 15. Now he has coughed up the ball twice in three games. “I feel like it drained the energy out of the team just starting early,” Jacobs said. “I take it personal on getting the team to start fast and things like that. Yeah, that’s on me.” Though the Vikings punted on the subsequent possession, they moved the ball enough to flip the field position. Perhaps wary of the fumble getting in Jacobs' head, LaFleur then called three straight passes from their own 15-yard line, and Love was off the mark on all three to force a punt. After a breakout performance here a year ago in a 33-10 victory over the Vikings that helped the Packers squeak into the playoffs after a rough start and ride the momentum through a first-round win at Dallas, Love looked awfully amid the cocktail of blitzes ordered by Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores that fueled a fierce pass rush. He finished 19 for 30 for 185 yards and one touchdown. “They do a good job of keeping a lid on the coverage. That’s how they play," LaFleur said. "We knew that going in, so there was going to be minimal opportunities to push the ball down the field. You've got to be super efficient. You've got to stay on schedule because once they get you into third down, that’s where they’re really good.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLThang'wa responds to PS Omollo's statement on sale of illicit alcohol in Mt KenyaAbstaining from cigarettes for just one week can extend a smoker’s life by a day, research suggests. A study by University College London estimates that each cigarette, on average, steals about 20 minutes of life from a smoker. This is a higher figure than previously thought, with earlier research suggesting that each cigarette cuts a smoker’s life short by 11 minutes. The research, which was commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care, found that men lost 17 minutes of life with every cigarette they smoke while women lost 22 minutes. Former NBA player Chandler Parsons recently shared his thoughts on Jimmy Butler ’s potential next team. With the Miami Heat star reportedly considering a move to one of four teams – the Phoenix Suns , Dallas Mavericks , Golden State Warriors, or Houston Rockets – Parsons believes that the Mavericks are the best fit. According to Parsons, Jimmy Butler might join the Rockets with the expectation of being the team’s main star, but that wouldn’t be the case. Instead, Parsons thinks the Mavericks would be a more suitable destination for Butler. With Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving already on the team, Parsons believes Butler would understand his role and fit in seamlessly. The Mavericks’ current weakness is their defense , and Parsons thinks Butler’s skills would be a significant asset in addressing that issue. The weakness of the team is defence, I think he can provide them a lot of things and fill a lot of holes they don’t have quite yet . That's not the best situation for him." – @ChandlerParsons Jimmy's best preferred trade destination is... – Houston ( @TeamLou23 's pick) – Dallas (Chandler's pick) – Golden State – Phoenix pic.twitter.com/N4fICxORGb Parsons strongly believes that the Dallas Mavericks make more sense for Butler, given his desire to join a contending team. With the Mavericks’ existing talent and Butler’s ability to fill gaps on defense, Parsons thinks this move would be a win-win for both Butler and the Mavericks. Jimmy Butler addresses speculations about his hair color change amid potential move Jimmy Butler’s frequent hair color changes over the past month have sparked speculation among fans, with each new hue potentially hinting at his next destination. Theories have ranged from yellow for the Warriors to orange for the Suns, fueling the already intense rumors surrounding Butler’s future. I can change my hair whatever color I want to and there’s no subliminals in my hair. I’ve been changing them lately, orange is the brightest color I had so thats what I went with. Butler has publicly backed his agent’s defense, praising their close relationship and solidarity in the face of rumors. The strong bond between Butler and Lee has been evident in their joint response to the speculation. As Butler approaches the end of his contract, worth $48.8 million, with a player option of $52.4 million looming for next season, the rumors about his future have reached a boiling point. Despite the speculation, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that Butler’s top priority remains securing a new deal with the Miami Heat , ahead of any potential trades. Burnley star James Trafford is high on Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper wishlist Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has just one senior goalkeeper in his ranks now following Guglielmo Vicario’s ankle surgery. Vicario suffered an ankle fracture in the Spurs’ 4-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and having played through it for an hour, potentially aggravating the problem in the process, he underwent surgery which has ruled him out of action until February at least. Fraser Forster has deputised in goal for the injured Italian in recent games. The experienced glovesman has done a decent job for Ange Postecoglou’s side, though, at 36, he is far from a long-term option and is out of contract at the end of the season ( Transfermarkt ). Thus, there could be concerns about whether the veteran goalkeeper will be able to manage to play a match almost every three days between now and until Vicario returns from his injury. According to a report from the Daily Mirror , Tottenham are plotting a January swoop for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. Ange Postecoglou has given the club chiefs the green light to make a move for the Englishman, who could cost £20million. James Trafford joined Burnley from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and made 28 Premier League appearances last season. He couldn’t help the Clarets maintain their top-flight status. The young goalkeeper has enjoyed a strong season in the Championship, leading the stingiest defensive unit built under the tutelage of Scott Parker. Trafford has made 21 league appearances , keeping an impressive 12 clean sheets and conceding only nine goals. He has been among the key reasons why Parker’s Burnley are third in the Championship. The aforementioned report adds Trafford is currently ahead of Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Sheffield Wednesday novice Pierce Charles on Spurs’ wish list. The chiefs at the Hotspur Way view the 22-year-old, who received his first call-up to the England senior squad in November, as a goalkeeper who has ‘growth’ and could ‘push’ Vicario at N17. Trafford is as accomplished with the ball at his feet as he is with the ball heading towards the goal. He has a season’s worth of Premier League experience under his belt and possesses the qualities as well as the potential to develop into a top-class goalkeeper at White Hart Lane. In addition, Big Ange and Spurs will struggle to find a better option at a supposed £20million set in the winter transfer window. All in all, Daniel Levy must not hesitate to splash the cash for Trafford and lure him away from Turf Moor to North London. Japanese monkeys living in Launceston will be prevented from reproducing due to concerns of disease and inbreeding within the group. For more than 40 years, visitors to Launceston’s City Park have been able to view the macaques frolicking about in an enclosure. But by 20250 it is expected there will be no monkeys left in the park. In 2000, it was revealed the herpes B virus had spread through the monkeys, although previous discussions of euthanising the troop were politically unpopular. The monkeys which given to Launceston by Japanese sister city Ikeda in 1981. Picture: City of Launceston Now there are increasing concerns about a lack of genetic diversity within the group. The City of Launceston has decided to desex the male members of the macaque troop to prevent the animals from breeding. It is expected that the desexing of the troop will take two years to complete. The council said while it was grateful to receive the monkeys, by today’s standards they would not keep these animals in an enclosure. They also said it was important to take into consideration the needs of the monkeys and the greater community. On Thursday afternoon, a council meeting voted 10-1 in favour of sterilisation, after hearing there were signs of miscarriages and stillbirths in the troop. Japanese macaques play about in Launceston's City Park. Picture: City of Launceston “We know the Launceston community cares very much about the welfare of the City Park monkeys,” Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said. “That’s a sentiment that’s also very much shared by both councillors and staff. “The inability to introduce new genetic stock and the serious impacts on their health and wellbeing means we need to begin to consider the future of the troop. “[The] decision was a difficult one, but it prioritises the welfare of the monkey troop so we can keep them as healthy and happy as possible for as long as possible. Mr Garwood said he would write to the mayor of Ikeda following the decision. Councillor Andrea Dawkins said if the city was offered this same opportunity today the city would be unlikely take it. “There is a lot of interest in these monkeys as there should be because there is so much interest in the way humans react with animals and we take it for granted they are a part of our lives,” she said. “Communities have changed and animals in captivity for the enjoyment of humans is some; thing we’ve moved through.” Originally published as Launceston council to sterilise iconic Japanese macaques More related stories Animals Dog act: Moment sick dog dumped in yard A dog is set to have life saving surgery after it was allegedly dumped in a random yard with a heartbreaking note. INDIANAPOLIS — The Detroit Lions experienced some injury scares during Sunday’s 24-6 win over the Indianapolis Colts, but head coach Dan Campbell is optimistic about most of them. Receiver Kalif Raymond (foot) is the one to worry about. He was hit hard while returning a punt about midway through the third quarter, and he remained down on the field for a few moments. He eventually got up and walked off with a noticeable limp, appearing to favor his left foot. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content.
