The Premier League has released a statement revealing why Joao Pedro managed to avoid a red card after a moment of madness during Brighton 0-0 Brentford. The two sides met in a Premier League clash on Friday night, but neither managed to break the deadlock and the spoils were ultimately shared. Things could have gone differently, though, had the Seagulls been reduced to 10 men and it looked like that could have been the case after Pedro lost his cool and appeared to try and elbow Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk in the head. Fortunately, he missed his opponent, but clearly made an attempt to make contact and VAR took a look at the incident. It seemed certain he would be sent off for the incident, but VAR decided that the incident wasn't grounds for dismissal. It left many confused and now the Premier League has released a statement explaining why he avoided a red card. How the Premier League table would currently look if VAR didn't exist. The Premier League's Statement While it initially seemed certain that the referee's decision to not dismiss Pedro would be overturned after VAR took a look at the incident, the officials decided there was no evidence from the footage that implied the initial decision was clearly and obviously wrong. That's according to the Premier League, anyway, with their statement posted via the Premier League Match Centre account on X (Twitter). The explanation won't satisfy many, but the decision stood and Pedro remained in the game. Throughout his entire career, the Brighton man has been sent off just once. If he'd have actually made contact with Yarmolyuk, that could have changed, though. All statistics courtesy of Transfermarkt and accurate as of 27/12/2024

Total number of Texas fans caught and punished for throwing bottles in Georgia game: ZeroDORTMUND, Germany (Reuters) -Substitute Ferran Torres scored twice including an 85th-minute winner as Barcelona earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday to move to the brink of qualification. In a pulsating five-goal second half, Torres struck twice in 10 minutes after coming on in the 71st minute to lift Barcelona to 15 points, in second place with two games remaining in the league phase. Dortmund twice came from a goal down with Serhou Guirassy scoring both goals but they could not do it a third time after Torres grabbed his second after being teed up by Lamine Yamal. The Germans dropped to ninth in the standings on 12 points, with the top eight earning automatic qualification to the round of 16. “We can be very happy with what we have done,” Barca coach Hansi Flick told reporters. “The first half was wonderful and in the second half, when they scored, we remained calm and solid. “Dortmund played very well with players who have a high pace but we did it well. We conceded goals because of mistakes we made. We can always improve, but today I have to say congratulations to the team because they did it really well,” he said. Barcelona bossed possession from the start and captain Raphinha and top scorer Robert Lewandowski had early chances. The hosts responded with an opportunity of their own through Marcel Sabitzer but it was Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel who was kept busy in a largely one-sided first half as the visitors enjoyed close to 70% possession. Dortmund looked sharper after the break and Guirassy put the ball in the net in the 50th minute before the effort was ruled out for offside. There was nothing wrong, however, when Raphinha latched on to a superb Dani Olmo pass to finish off a quick move in the 53rd minute and put Barcelona in the driving seat with his sixth goal of the competition. The hosts levelled through Guirassy’s well-taken penalty on the hour after the Guinea international was brought down in the box before Dortmund’s Kobel came to the rescue once more, stopping another Olmo shot. He was beaten in the 75th when Torres, who had come on four minutes earlier, slotted in on the rebound after Kobel had punched a Frenkie de Jong volley into his path. Guirassy hit back three minutes later when the Barca defence was caught napping but it was not enough to earn a point as Torres scored again after a superb through ball from Yamal. There was more bad news for injury-plagued Dortmund after defender Nico Schlotterbeck turned his ankle following a header in the last move of the game and had to be carried off on a stretcher after the final whistle. Put politics aside and act on online harms, mother of sextortion victim tells MPsThe NCAA Division I Board of Directors on Monday approved a blanket waiver granting an additional year of eligibility to former junior college transfers in similar positions to Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia , opening the door for a wave of college athletes across all sports to spend one more year in college athletics. According to an NCAA memo, the waiver extends an extra year of eligibility in 2025-26 to athletes who previously "competed at a non-NCAA school for one or more years" and otherwise would have exhausted their NCAA eligibility following the 2024-25 season. The decision from the NCAA comes five days after a federal judge in Tennessee granted an injunction to allow Pavia, a former junior college transfer who played his first season at Vanderbilt in 2024, to pursue an additional year of college eligibility next fall. In its memo announcing the waiver, the NCAA also announced that it has filed a notice of appeal to the ruling in Pavia's case. Editor's Picks Vandy QB Pavia granted injunction, can play in '25 4d Dan Murphy Vandy QB Pavia suing NCAA over eligibility rules 43d Mark Schlabach Pavia initially sued the NCAA over its eligibility standards in November, contending that the organization's rules that include a player's junior college years against his overall NCAA eligibility violate antitrust laws in restricting an athlete's ability to earn money from their name, image and likeness. Last week's injunction applied solely to Pavia and would have prevented the NCAA from barring the Vanderbilt quarterback from returning next fall. However, Monday's ruling from the NCAA will now allow other athletes in similar situations -- former junior college players who would have been out of eligibility following this season -- to return for an additional year in 2025-26. The waiver does not extend to all junior college athletes, only those who would have completed their NCAA eligibility this year. Pavia's lawsuit and the subsequent injunction have potentially paved the way for hundreds of former junior college athletes to gain an additional year of eligibility in 2025-26. Pavia completed 59.2% of his passes for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns to four interceptions while leading Vanderbilt to a 6-6 finish in 2024. He joined the Commodores following two seasons at New Mexico State after beginning his college career at New Mexico Military Institute, a two-year junior college. Under NCAA rules, athletes are typically given five years to play four seasons. Among the arguments in Pavia's lawsuit is that the NCAA unfairly counted his time in junior college -- played outside the purview of the organization -- against his NCAA eligibility, and in turn limited his ability to earn money off of his name, image and likeness. Under the new waiver, Pavia will be granted a sixth year of NCAA eligibility next fall. Florida State wide receiver Malik Benson thought he'd used his final year of eligibility after playing for the Seminoles in 2024, Alabama in 2023 and the prior two seasons at Hutchinson Community College. He told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Monday that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal in the wake of the ruling and feels blessed to have an opportunity to play one more year. Benson and his agent had been in touch with attorney Darren Heitner, who works in the college sports space, about filing for an extra year. They had a 28-page complaint prepared, but never had to file it. "I'm just glad that the Lord blessed me with another opportunity and another year," Benson told Thamel. "I will not take this for granted." Benson is expected to be one of many who either return to school or enter the portal to take advantage of the ruling. News surrounding the NCAA waiver and Pavia's lawsuit comes days before Vanderbilt takes part in its first bowl game since 2018. Honda Motor Co said Wednesday it will cancel a tie-up with General Motors Co for a joint self-driving taxi venture, after the U.S. automaker outlined its plan to withdraw from autonomous taxi development. GM said in a release on Tuesday that it would no longer allocate funds for driverless taxi development, citing the "considerable time and resources that would be needed to scale the business" and the pressures of an increasingly competitive market. The two carmakers had planned to begin operations at the taxi venture in Tokyo in 2026 using a self-driving vehicle classified as a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, the second highest of five scales for the technology. Level 4 means the vehicles are fully automated under certain conditions. Honda will sell its holdings in a GM subsidiary in charge of the driverless taxi business to the U.S. automaker. Japan has been falling behind other countries such as the United States and China in introducing driverless taxis. Amid a shrinking population, the country is also grappling with driver shortages in the transportation sector.RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson will not appear at former President Donald Trump ’s rally on Saturday in the battleground state following a CNN report about Robinson’s alleged disturbing online posts, an absence that illustrates the liability the gubernatorial candidate poses for Trump and downballot GOP candidates. Robinson is not expected to attend the event in Wilmington, according to a person on the Trump campaign and a second person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning. Robinson has been a frequent presence at Trump's North Carolina campaign stops. The Republican nominee has referred to Robinson, who is Black, as “Martin Luther King on steroids" and long praised him. But in the wake of Thursday's CNN report , the Trump campaign issued a statement that didn't mention Robinson and instead spoke generally about how North Carolina was key to the campaign's efforts. Robinson's campaign didn't respond to a text Friday seeking confirmation on his Saturday plans. The deadline in state law for Robinson to withdraw as the Republican candidate for governor passed late Thursday. State Republican leaders could have picked a replacement had a withdrawal occurred. Robinson has denied writing the posts, which include racial and sexual comments. He said he wouldn't be forced out of the race by “salacious tabloid lies.” While Robinson won his GOP gubernatorial primary in March, he's been trailing in several recent polls to Democratic nominee Josh Stein , the state's attorney general. “Let me reassure you the things that you will see in that story — those are not the words of Mark Robinson,” he told supporters in a video released Thursday by his campaign. “You know my words. You know my character.” State law says a gubernatorial nominee had until the day before the first absentee ballots requested by military and overseas voters are distributed to withdraw. They were distributed starting Friday. Robinson has a history of inflammatory comments that Stein has said made him too extreme to lead North Carolina. They already have contributed to the prospect that campaign struggles for Robinson could help Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris win the state’s 16 electoral votes. Democrats jumped on Robinson and other Republicans after the report aired, showing on social media photos of Robinson with Trump or with other GOP candidates, attempting to tarnish them by association. Losing swing district races for a congressional seat and the General Assembly would endanger the GOP’s control of the U.S. House and retaining veto-proof majorities at the legislature. “The fallout is going to be huge,” Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University, said Friday. “The Democrats are counting on this ... having a big effect.” But Cooper said Republicans could limit problems to the governor's race only if upward ticket-splitting trends among voters continue. Harris' campaign rolled out a new ad Friday it calls the first to link Trump to a down-ballot candidate. The commercial alternates between Trump’s praise for Robinson and the lieutenant governor’s comments which his critics have argued show his support for a statewide abortion ban without exceptions. Robinson's campaign have said that's not true. The Democratic National Committee is also running billboards in three major North Carolina cities showing a photo of Robinson and Trump and comments Trump has said about him. And a fundraising appeal Friday by Jeff Jackson, Democratic attorney general candidate, also includes a past video showing Republican opponent Dan Bishop saying he endorsed Robinson. “Every North Carolinian when they go to vote ought to look at whether a candidate has done that, because that sends a strong message about who you are as a candidate,” Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, a top Harris surrogate, said at a Friday news conference. CNN's story, which describes a series of comments that it said Robinson posted on the message board more than a decade ago, sent tremors through the state’s political class, particularly Republicans. While the state Republican Party came to Robinson’s defense late Thursday pointing out he's “categorically denied the allegations,” party Chairman Jason Simmons put out his own statement Friday calling them “deeply troubling” and that Robinson "needs to explain them to the people of North Carolina.” U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis , R-N.C., who endorsed a Robinson rival in the primary, said on X that Thursday “was a tough day, but we must stay focused on the races we can win.” He didn't mention the governor's race. U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, chairman of House Republicans' campaign arm, discounted Robinson’s impact in North Carolina congressional races. CNN reported that Robinson, who would be North Carolina’s first Black governor, attacked on the message board civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in searing terms and once referred to himself as a “black NAZI.” CNN also reported that Robinson wrote of being aroused by a memory of “peeping” women in gym showers when he was 14 along with an appreciation of transgender pornography. Robinson at one point referred to himself as a “perv,” according to CNN. The Associated Press has not independently confirmed that Robinson wrote and posted the messages. CNN said it matched details of the account on the pornographic website forum to other online accounts held by Robinson by comparing usernames, a known email address and his full name. CNN reported that details discussed by the account holder matched Robinson’s age, length of marriage and other biographical information. It also compared figures of speech that were used in his public Facebook profile and that appeared in discussions by the account on the pornographic website. This story was first published on Sep. 20, 2024. It was updated on Nov. 22, 2024 to correct which of Robinson’s social media accounts CNN cited in a comparison to language in messages from a pornographic website message board. CNN cited his public Facebook account, not his Twitter account. Price reported from New York. Associated Press writers Kevin Freking in Washington, Meg Kinnard in Chapin, South Carolina and Makiya Seminera in Raleigh contributed to this report.
