For the last few years, a younger generation of Republicans — including Vice President-elect J.D. Vance — has tried to convince their party to (partially) rethink its traditional kowtowing to corporate interests. If they really want to be the party of the working class, it might not be enough to pour contempt on and . What if they combined that with a genuine skepticism of corporate power, and a willingness to use government to police monopolies and make sure markets work for everyone? It was an interesting idea. But even if Vance and his allies were sincere — and there are plenty of reasons to doubt that — the incoming Trump White House is going in another direction. Big business will have than in his first, and the dream of a Republican Party that cares about voters’ pocketbooks, not just CEOs’ salaries, . The idea that this administration will be “populist” in any meaningful sense looks more like a joke every single day. Already, Trump has to fill out Cabinet posts and advisory positions. He is dining with industry lobbyists and promising regulatory exemptions to big companies. And on Tuesday, that he would replace Lina Khan, , as chair of the Federal Trade Commission.Under Khan, the FTC has been at the center of some of the most important action on markets and monopolies over the last four years. Along with Jonathan Kanter, head of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, Khan has reinvigorated antitrust enforcement, challenging giant mergers and bringing lawsuits against tech companies for their exploitative practices. While not all of Khan’s antitrust actions have been successful, she has notched some notable victories. Earlier this year, between grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, arguing the merger would raise prices and hurt workers. After a judge sided with the FTC and state regulators, Albertsons backed out of the deal. Though , her adversarial relationship with large corporations, and particularly with the tech industry, won her some fans on the right. “I look at Lina Khan as one of the few people in the Biden administration that I think is doing a pretty good job,” earlier this year. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., that her past criticism of Amazon was “precisely why she was a good choice for the FTC.” Hawley is just one Republican who has styled himself an anti-corporate crusader; he has to outlaw corporate political contributions, which he says would “hold Corporate America accountable for drowning out the voices of the American people.” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Trump's pick for secretary of state, once a union organizing drive at an Amazon facility, though only because he thought the company was too “woke” and should be punished. The support for Khan from these “Khanservatives,” and the forlorn hope that Trump’s “populism” has anything to do with economics, led some to wonder if Trump might actually let Khan stay on. The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board In July that “Mr. Vance may lobby Mr. Trump to reappoint her in a second term.” Instead, Trump has picked FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson as her replacement. In announcing Ferguson on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that “Andrew has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship.” But this hostility emerges only when Ferguson believes tech companies are censoring conservatives. He recently praised X owner Elon Musk, that the platform’s “current turn toward free expression is due only to its new owner’s unusually firm commitment to free and open debate.” In fact, Musk regularly his own critics on X and trying to quash speech he doesn’t like. Ferguson’s , , demonstrates that he will broadly reverse Khan’s robust antitrust enforcement. In the one-page document, he promises to “reverse Lina Khan’s anti-business agenda” by repealing “burdensome” regulations (i.e. regulations that businesses don’t like) and stopping “Lina Khan’s war on mergers.” And lest Big Tech gets too worried, he pledges to “end the FTC’s attempt to become an AI regulator.” No one should be surprised that conservative support for Khan and opposition to Big Tech was never about the dangers of monopoly power or the well being of consumers. Republicans only get mad at companies when they perceive a threat to their partisan interests. Likewise, they’ll condemn corporate “wokeness” when companies celebrate Pride Month, but they don’t care if those same companies jack up prices, mistreat workers or pollute communities. For all the Khanservatives' claim to be reimagining their party’s stance toward corporations, they lack any broader conception of how much power corporations should have, how government should ensure the proper functioning of markets, or what constitutes genuine competition in the public interest. They’re happy to have the FTC, and the government in general, revert to a reflexive view that corporations should be able to do pretty much whatever they want — so long as it’s conservative officials who are determining where the lines are. Now Vance and his allies’ claims to populism will be truly tested. Are the corporate-oriented officials running key agencies in the new Trump administration going to reverse the Biden administration’s efforts in taking on corporate power? What about the FTC’s recently finalized “ ” rule, which will require that canceling a subscription or gym membership is as easy as signing up in the first place? What about its on “junk fees,” or its ban on onerous ? Based on Trump’s actions since the election, all these moves could be at risk. It’s not just the FTC — we could see the Trump administration end the efforts to get for airline passengers that Biden started, or follow up on threats to neuter the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which protects consumers from financial industry scams and mistreatment (Elon Musk he wants to “delete” the CFPB). Here’s the real measure of the phoniness of the Republican claim to populism: As the next four years progress, watch how often the administration takes the side of consumers when they come in conflict with corporate interests. My bet is on “almost never.” Perhaps Vance was sincere all the times he said he wanted a genuinely populist Republican Party that is skeptical of corporate power. But that’s almost certainly not what we’re going to get. "If I rode a dirt bike through Cronulla mall, I would be in big trouble, but these guys can ride a silent dirt bike through the mall and get off Scott-free." An older man said, "They come up behind you are 20km/h and fly by you on the footpath which is just a metre wide. It is the parents who need to teach their kids to ring the bloody bell". Mr Kennedy said it was an issue "that needs the entire community to step up, and that includes federal, state and local governments, parents and schools". He said police had been more pro-active since Superintendent Don Faulds took over as Sutherland Shire Police Commander in July. "Action is starting," he said. "I have seen police in the mall multiple times and at Caringbah station. I appreciate it's not as fast as we would like, but Sutherland Shire is leading the way. It's a tough job police have." Mr Kennedy said, "Some of the Catholic schools have started educating parents about what is a legal e-bike". "If it goes over 25km/h or is over 500W, it is not an e-bike, it is a moped [requiring registration and the rider needing to be licensed]," he said. Inspector Dave Parker, from Sutherland Shire Local Area Command, said police made an educational visit to Cronulla mall on Thursday last week with a pop-up stall, and involving youth liaison officers and council officers. He also said, on October 31, an enforcement operation was conducted across the region, in which 115 bicycle offences, 84 of them involving unregistered vehicles ("a good percentage would be e-bikes"), and 53 registration offences were dealt with by police. Inspector Parker said only people of licence age (16 or over) could be issued with offence tickets. "Enforcement is being taken, but when we get into the juveniles, if they are not of licence age, we can't be issuing traffic tickets for licensing offences when they aren't old enough to hold a licence," he said. "We will be continuing pop-up events and other educational events around Sutherland Shire in conjunction with the council." Inspector Parker said plain clothes police would be utilised. "The last thing we want is for a police car with lights and siren tearing off some off after some kid on an e-bike," he said. Inspector Parker said police had the power to impound e-bikes after certain offences, "but then we also get into the storage issue - they have lithium batteries." Cronulla MP Mark Speakman said the Legislative Council inquiry into e-bikes finished taking evidence at the end of October and was expected to provide a report by early in the New Year after which the government had six months to respond. "I think the message that comes through loudly and clearly this morning is that, while we look at age limits, speed limits, registration and licensing and carrying IDs, reducing the wattage from 500 to 250, there is a need for action right now when it comes to enforcement, signage, import control and education," he said. Mayor Jack Boyd said council rangers did not have the power to issue fines or even ask for ID. He said the council would be erecting larger signs, particularly on the Esplanade, stating e-bikes and other bikes were not permitted. Former councillor Leanne Farmer suggested that, as well as using existing laws in enforcement, a social media education campaign should be conducted using "people that adolescents listen to", such as Nicho Hynes and Blakey Johnston. SACRAMENTO — Months after he was convicted of ordering murders throughout the California prison system, an imprisoned leader of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang allegedly attacked two corrections officers who were escorting him back to his cell. Ronald Dean Yandell, 62, allegedly drew a knife on two prison guards as they were escorting him to his cell from a medical appointment at California State Prison, Sacramento on Nov. 22. No staff were injured in the fight, but they did deploy pepper spray on Yandell, causing him to drop the weapon, according to a news release by the state prison system. The incident came two months after a different corrections officer injured Yandell during a transport, allegedly knocking him down and striking him while he was handcuffed. Yandell had filed a lawsuit alleging prison and federal authorities retaliated against him for political advocacy work just days before he was injured. Yandell, a former West Contra Costa resident, has not been charged in connection with the Nov. 22 incident, but it was being treated as a double attempted murder, authorities said. Prison officials say they plan to send the case to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office. Yandell is currently awaiting sentencing in a federal racketeering case, where he was convicted of conspiracies to commit murder, smuggle drugs and other contraband in prison and serving as a leader of the notorious prison gang. Most of the convictions centered on a wiretap of Yandell’s contraband cellphone in the late 2010s, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Tensions have been brewing in the Sacramento prison where Yandell and his co-defendants are housed. One of his co-defendants, Brant Daniel, recently accused prison staff of attempting to set him up to be killed through a planned transfer to a prison in Corcoran. Another of Yandell’s co-defendants, Danny Troxell, traded death threats with him during their trial last March, before both men were convicted. Yandell is also known for political advocacy work, having helped arranged a peace treaty between rival prison gangs and serving as a leader of a prison-wide hunger strike in the early 2010s. The strike helped scale back the rampant use of solitary confinement. He has accused law enforcement of retaliating against him by bringing on the racketeering case, though a federal judge recently denied a motion to throw out the convictions based on those grounds. If Yandell is charged in Sacramento court, it’s unlikely to have much effect on his life trajectory. He is already serving a life sentence for murder and manslaughter convictions in Contra Costa, and faces a life sentence in the federal case. The incident is the third bit of violence being treated as an attempted murder of a prison staffer in California so far this month.
