Pressure on acute hospitals across the country is expected to continue despite plans being in place for a surge in hospitalisations in the post-Christmas period. Members of the public have been advised to use alternative healthcare services for treatment where appropriate. “The healthcare system and in particular our acute hospitals have been working well over the Christmas period, with senior clinical staff on site ensuring patients are discharged when possible, and ensuring efficient patient flow through Emergency Departments,” said HSE chief executive Bernard Gloster. "We expect pressure to continue over the coming days and we would urge the public to use alternative healthcare services for treatment such as GP, GP out of hours, injury units and pharmacies when appropriate. But if patients are very sick and in an emergency situation, they should of course come to their nearest emergency department.” The HSE has advised that emergency departments are always available to treat seriously ill patients and the sickest patients will be seen first. Those with less severe injuries and symptoms may have to wait to be seen. Hospital visiting restrictions may also be in place due to circulating infections, or infection prevention and control purposes, with members of the public advised to follow guidance on the HSE website in relation to these restrictions. On Monday, the HSE's Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Colm Henry warned there could be 800-900 cases of flu in hospitals countrywide by the end of the year with a peak expected in January. Flu cases are expected to continue to rise as people return to work and children return to school. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the HSE said additional daytime GP expanded clinics are available from some practices from today, along with additional supports for out-of-hours services. Flu and Covid-19 vaccinations also remain available for target groups. They also reminded members of the public that a local pharmacy can offer advice for treating the common cold, with GP out-of-hours services also available for urgent care. DULUTH — The boys hockey team from Mankato West High School arrived at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center early Saturday morning, but they were missing something important for hockey teams — their stick bag. Coach Nate Olsen thought something strange must have happened. Maybe they never made it on the bus or somehow ended up on another team’s bus. ADVERTISEMENT The Scarlets had already lost two one-goal games, and they arrived at the Heritage Center for an 8 a.m. game against Anoka to conclude their participation at the annual Holiday Classic tournament. “It’s 7 in the morning, you’re getting the bus unloaded, you have everything there and all of a sudden, when you go to look for the stick bag — there’s no sticks,” Olsen said. The team did their “due diligence,” according to Olsen, but the equipment manager was “adamant” he put the bag on the bus the night before. Officials at the Heritage Center were able to pull up security camera footage to confirm he was correct. “We could see him taking the bag from the locker room and out the door and into the bus,” Olsen said. “Unfortunately, sometime from late yesterday afternoon to early this morning, our stick bag disappeared.” Staying at the downtown Holiday Inn, the Scarlets’ coach bus was parked overnight on West First Street. As they began to suspect theft, they reported the incident to the Duluth Police Department and gave an inventory of what was missing. Duluth police public information officer Mattie Hjelseth confirmed the report and said the investigation remains active. Officers were working to follow any leads, and no further information would be released on Saturday, she said. ADVERTISEMENT Officers saw a man walking in the 100 block of East Third Street with a few of the items just before 11 p.m., Hjelseth said in a statement early Sunday morning. The man told officers he found the items behind Chum. He didn’t match the suspect's description but was arrested on an unrelated warrant, Hjelseth said. Police are making arrangements to return the items. Heritage Center Director Jeff Stark put out a call for local help to find the sticks on social media. “We are aware of this theft of property and are assisting the team and law enforcement with trying to locate and recover their stolen sticks,” Stark wrote. “This incident happened while the team bus was parked overnight at their hotel. If you have any information, please contact the Duluth Police Department so we can try and obtain a positive outcome for the Mankato West players and families.” Olsen said he estimated there were 30 to 40 sticks in the bag worth a “rough estimate” of $10,000-$12,000. He said parents are also working with the list to cross-reference what was lost with what is missing, but either way it’s a “big deal,” particularly on the heels of the holiday season. “That’s usually a more expensive month for most families,” Olsen said. “Now try to come up with $6-800 to be ready to practice and play — even if there is a resolution on the back end, that resolution is not going to have cash in people’s pockets by Monday.” The referee scheduled to work the early game Saturday told Olsen he’s been officiating hockey for 37 years and had never seen anything like this, but the veteran coach said they were trying to stay positive. “The dust will settle and we’ll be OK long term,” Olsen said. “It’s just a unique circumstance we’re going to have to fight through and we’ll be better for it, but it’s quite a story — there’s no doubt about it.” ADVERTISEMENT This story was updated at 9:44 a.m. Dec. 19, with information about some of the items being recovered. Then they lost their patience on offense before finally losing their game. Utah Tech, behind Aaliyah Ibarra’s 36 points off the bench, rallied from an early deficit to knock off McNeese State 79-69 Saturday afternoon inside the Legacy Center. Shooting 30 free throws to McNeese’s eight, the Trailblazers improved to 3-3 while the Cowgirls fell to the same record. “We only had one good quarter and you have to have four,” said McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy. The Cowgirls got off to a fast start, leading 25-20 at the end of the first quarter behind some hot shooting. That was after taking a 22-20 lead with 3:25 left on Azjah Reeves’ layup. However, the Blazers closed quickly which was a sign of things to come. “I thought we settled the last three quarters,” said Kennedy. “We were not attacking like we should have. We have to be better and have to compete.” A strong second quarter for both teams kept things interesting as the Trailblazers led 48-46 at the half. However, McNeese really struggled from there as both teams had problems in the third quarter. Utah Tech led 61-60 heading into the fourth quarter. That’s when the Cowgirls went from cold to fridged, missing their first nine shots from the field. That allowed the Blazers to pull away, outscoring McNeese 13-1 over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Press buzz aside, the measure is welcomed by retailers who could seamlessly move from their Halloween decorations to Christmas trees and glittered ornaments. It also generated an incentive for people to buy things “ahead of time,” “before the December price hike,” etc. But beyond that, the truth is that in Venezuela Christmas is felt way before December 24. In fact, our country is a living example of a famous slogan created by a Colombian radio station: “Since September it feels like December is around the corner.” Venezuelans have the holidays on their minds during the last trimester, and they start planning the most important gastronomic traditions: , ham bread and chicken salad. The is the main event, with its long preparation often becoming an opportunity for families to gather and catch up. There are many theories concerning its origin. One says that it was created from the scraps that the elites gave to their slaves during colonial times. Another is that it takes on a Spanish pie but made out of corn flour due to the shortage of wheat. But the theory I like the most – with solid bibliography to back it up – says that the can be traced back hundreds of years, to pre-Hispanic times, when Indigenous peoples prepared a corn dough wrapped in its own leaves and cooked in clay pots. Now, the stew that fills the does have a lot to do with the Spaniards, and it was later adapted and perfected. So a deconstructed has pre-colonial elements: corn and (achiote). As a result, as time went on, became an instrument for popular classes to express their hopes and frustrations.
