STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Jaylen Reed’s hands were still dirty and his face smeared with eye black as he took a seat in the Beaver Stadium media room. The hard-nosed veteran of nearly 50 college football games looked weary after Penn State pounded Maryland on Saturday, but lit up as he watched media members gather around teammate Audavion Collins next to him. The sophomore was excitedly describing his first career interception. Reed grinned, his pride was evident. One of Penn State’s captains, Reed loves when underclassmen earn playing time. He knows, especially on defense, the No. 3 Nittany Lions (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 4 CFP) will likely rely on them to make a run at their first national championship since 1986. “Having that type of depth, having that type of guy that can step up and play the game every week, that’s something that’s going to help us down the stretch,” Reed said. “Having depth at all positions, I feel like that’s the main thing and I feel like we have huge depth.” Reed knows Collins is far from the only reserve player who has been effective for Tom Allen’s defense this season. The writing was on the wall for Irwin to lose his roster spot should another player earn one. Isaiah Williams, whom was claimed last month, made his debut Sunday against Pittsburgh and played three snaps on offense while also fielding the team's lone punt return of the afternoon. Williams has essentially taken Irwin's role from him. Now that a practice squad spot has opened up, it would not be surprising at all to see Irwin rejoin the team in that capacity. What Shaka Heyward's role will be Taking Irwin's roster spot is Heyward, a second-year linebacker who's spent the last two season on the practice squad. Heyward made a push for the initial 53-man roster back in August but ultimately lost out to rookie Maema Njongmeta. Heyward is now on the roster to help compensate for Logan Wilson's knee injury. Wilson missed the Steelers game after failing to practice throughout the week , and it's unclear if he'll be able to return next Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys. This ensures the Bengals will have five healthy linebackers available without having to elevate Heyward off the practice squad. The team already used an elevation on Heyward back in Week 11. It's also not out of the equation that Heyward could see playing time with the defense. Germaine Pratt and Akeem Davis-Gaither dramatically underwhelmed against Pittsburgh, and the linebacker position could use new solutions. In short, signing Heyward to the roster instead of waiting until the weekend to elevate him doesn't bode well for Wilson returning this week. It's a great opportunity for Heyward to play in his second-ever regular season game, and for the defense to try out new personnel. Five New Yorkers have been charged with felony possession of stolen property, conspiracy and other related crimes, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. The bust served as a reminder to shoppers as the holiday shopping season kicks off in earnest with Black Friday this week to make sure they are supporting legitimate establishments, she said. “When a deal seems too good to be true, I guarantee you, it’s too good to be true,” Katz said. Nationally, businesses lose roughly $100 billion and the average family pays $500 more a year because of the impact of organized retail theft, according to New York Gov.
