NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks pulled Wall Street to another record amid a mixed Monday of trading. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% from its to post a record for the 54th time this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 128 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. Super Micro Computer, a stock that’s been on an AI-driven roller coaster, soared 28.7% to lead the market. Following allegations of misconduct and the , the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company’s board. It also said that it doesn’t expect to restate its past financials and that it will find a new chief financial officer, appoint a general counsel and make other moves to strengthen its governance. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up the market. Gains of 1.8% for Microsoft and 3.2% for Meta Platforms were the two strongest forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. Intel was another propellant during the morning, but it lost an early gain to fall 0.5% after the chip company said and stepped down from the board. Intel is looking for Gelsinger’s replacement, and its chair said it’s “committed to restoring investor confidence.” Intel recently to Nvidia, which has skyrocketed in Wall Street’s frenzy around AI. Stellantis, meanwhile, skidded following the . Carlos Tavares steps down after nearly four years in the top spot of the automaker, which owns car brands like Jeep, Citroën and Ram, amid an ongoing and an inventory backlog at dealerships. The world’s fourth-largest automaker’s stock fell 6.3% in Milan. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 likewise fell, including California utility PG&E. It dropped 5% after saying it would sell $2.4 billion of stock and preferred shares to raise cash. Retailers were mixed amid what’s expected to be the best on record and coming off . Target, which recently gave a , fell 1.2%. , which gave a more optimistic forecast, rose 0.2%. Amazon, which looks to benefit from online sales from Cyber Monday, climbed 1.4%. All told, the S&P 500 added 14.77 points to 6,047.15. The Dow fell 128.65 to 44,782.00, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 185.78 to 19,403.95. The stock market largely took latest threat on tariffs in stride. The president-elect on Saturday threatened against a group of developing economies if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. Trump said he wants the group, headlined by Brazil, Russia, India and China, to promise it won’t create a new currency or otherwise try to undercut the U.S. dollar. The dollar has long been the currency of choice for global trade. Speculation has also been around a long time that other currencies could knock it off its mantle, but no contender has come close. The U.S. dollar’s value rose Monday against several other currencies, but one of its strongest moves likely had less to do with the tariff threats. The euro fell amid a political battle in Paris . The euro sank 0.7% against the U.S. dollar and broke below $1.05. In the bond market, Treasury yields gave up early gains to hold relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed above 4.23% during the morning before falling back to 4.19%. That was just above its level of 4.18% late Friday. A report in the morning showed the U.S. manufacturing sector contracted again last month, but not by as much as economists expected. This upcoming week will bring several big updates on the job market, including the October job openings report, weekly unemployment benefits data and the all-important November jobs report. They could steer the next moves for which recently began to give support to the economy. Economists expect Friday’s headliner report to show U.S. employers accelerated their hiring in November, coming off that was hampered by damaging hurricanes and strikes. “We now find ourselves in the middle of this Goldilocks zone, where economic health supports earnings growth while remaining weak enough to justify potential Fed rate cuts,” according to Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide. In financial markets abroad, Chinese stocks led gains worldwide as monthly surveys showed improving conditions for manufacturing, partly driven by a surge in orders ahead of Trump’s inauguration next month. Both official and private sector surveys of factory managers showed strong new orders and export orders, possibly partly linked to efforts by importers in the U.S. to beat potential tariff hikes by once he takes office. Indexes rose 0.7% in Hong Kong and 1.1% in Shanghai. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.Forty years ago, Band Aid stirred my Gen X conscience. The Capitals updated Ovechkin’s status Thursday after he was evaluated by team doctors upon returning from a three-game trip. The 39-year-old broke the leg in a shin-on-shin collision Monday night with Utah's Jack McBain, and some of his closest teammates knew it was not good news even before Ovechkin was listed as week to week and placed on injured reserve. Thousands of students, supported by their family and friends, gathered at venues across the coast making for a diverse and colourful formals season. From limousines to tractors to sports cars and even wheelbarrows, entrances were made in spectacular style. Angels Formal Wear owner Patricia Thew said the 2024 formal season was “busier than she’d ever been” managing the demand for dresses and gowns. She noticed that the most popular style by far was the fitted straight dresses. “The girls seemed to prefer that style as opposed to the more classic princess gown,” Ms Thew said. Australia has defended the independence of the top international court after it issued arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister, former defence minister and a Hamas commander. The International Criminal Court (ICC) found there were reasonable grounds that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant bore criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes. This includes allegations of using starvation as a method of warfare and directing attacks against civilians in Gaza. The warrants are not a finding of guilt. The ICC rejected Israel’s challenge that it didn’t have jurisdiction over the matter. Australia respects the independence of the ICC and its important role in upholding international law. Australia is focused on working with countries that want peace to press for an urgently needed ceasefire. pic.twitter.com/SeHLuAk83Z — Senator Penny Wong (@SenatorWong) November 21, 2024 Australia respects the independence of the ICC and its “important role in upholding international law”, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. “We have been clear that all parties to the conflict must comply with international humanitarian law,” she said in a statement on X. Senator Wong reiterated calls for civilians to be protected, hostages to be released, aid workers to be protected and for more humanitarian aid to flow. Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie said it was troubling that the court had targeted “an elected member of a democracy, of a sovereign nation-state, trying to protect his country from terrorists”. The ICC ruled it had jurisdiction to investigate the situation in Palestinian territories and that states couldn’t challenge the jurisdiction prior to a warrant being issued, “thus Israel’s challenge is premature”. Senior coalition figures have repudiated the court’s argument it has jurisdiction, arguing Australia’s position should be in line with the United States, which rejected the ruling. “They’re supposed to be working with nation states and their legal systems, not seeking to supplant them,” Senator McKenzie said of the ICC. “We would be looking to obviously stand with the United States on this issue.” However, the US isn’t an ICC member state – while Australia is – and Washington previously welcomed a warrant issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin for atrocities in Ukraine. Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the European Commission foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell said they would comply with the ruling. An arrest warrant was also issued for Hamas’ military wing commander Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri for the crimes against humanity of murder, extermination, torture, and rape and other forms of sexual violence. There were reasonable grounds to believe he was also responsible for the war crimes of murder, cruel treatment, torture, taking hostages, outrages upon personal dignity, and rape and other forms of sexual violence, the court found. The decision by the independent court showed international humanitarian law needed to be upheld through fair and impartial judicial processes in all circumstances, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said. “Our collective mind and focus should be on the victims of international crimes in Israel and in the State of Palestine,” he said in a statement after the warrants were issued . Do Americans agree with Republicans' transgender bathroom bans? The history of bathroom access in the U.S. Capitol is part of a broader story about how political representation in the U.S. has been limited to men until recently — female lawmakers didn't have access to a bathroom near the House chamber until 2011 , nearly a century after the first woman served in Congress and four years after the House elected its first female speaker. In January, Delaware Rep.-elect Sarah McBride will also make history in congressional representation, becoming the first openly transgender individual to serve in Congress. But once again, being a trailblazer has come with challenges. In response to McBride's election, South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a resolution last week intended to ban transgender women like McBride from using women's bathrooms in the Capitol. House Speaker Mike Johnson initially equivocated on the issue, but under pressure from fellow Republicans like Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, he issued a statement that all single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House offices "are reserved for individuals of that biological sex ." Mace has since followed up with an even more sweeping proposal , a bill that would apply a transgender bathroom ban to all facilities on federal property. These kinds of bills are often presented by their proponents as efforts to protect women and girls from sexual predators and preserve women-only spaces. Indeed, Mace has frequently invoked her status as a sexual assault survivor when talking about her bill. Critics have shot back that these arguments from Republicans are hypocritical given that President-elect Donald Trump and some potential members of his administration have been accused of sexual assault , and that policing the use of bathrooms in and of itself would be a violation of privacy . For her part, McBride has been dismissive of Mace's proposal, calling it an "effort to distract from the real issues facing the country." Transgender rights have emerged as a relatively new culture war battle in the past decade, and have become a hot-button issue in state and local policymaking. Around 2016, states began passing laws restricting transgender rights, with bathroom access being one of the first targets. (Other states, like California , have also passed laws protecting transgender rights in response.) Beyond bathroom bans, half of U.S. states have now restricted or banned transgender youth from playing in school sports on teams consistent with their gender identity, while 26 states have banned gender-affirming health care for children under 18. Similar policies were included in Project 2025 , the sweeping, Heritage Foundation-penned proposal for federal policies under the next GOP administration. And this year, Republicans across the country leaned hard into anti-trans talking points on the campaign trail. That message may have been effective. In a YouGov/Yahoo News survey earlier this month , 56 percent of Americans said they agreed more that "transgender rights have gone too far, infringing on the rights of women and children," compared to 32 percent who said they agreed more that "protecting transgender rights is essential to ensuring equality for all Americans." And in another YouGov poll last week , a plurality of 43 percent of Americans said they'd prefer their congressional representatives to focus more on upholding traditional definitions of gender, versus 30 percent who wanted them to focus more on protecting the rights of transgender people (12 percent said neither, and 15 percent were unsure). When it comes to specific policies, about half of Americans in that poll (including 78 percent of Republicans and 29 percent of Democrats) seemed to agree with Mace on bathroom bans, telling YouGov they think transgender people should use bathrooms that correspond to their assigned sex at birth, while 34 percent thought they should use bathrooms that align with their current gender identity, or either option. Slightly more voters also seem to favor bans on sports participation, while opinions are split on banning gender-affirming care for youth. In an October UMass Amherst poll , a plurality of Americans, 47 percent, supported bans on transgender individuals' participation in school sports teams matching their gender identity, compared to just 25 percent who opposed them (the rest were undecided). In a Morning Consult poll of registered voters from Nov. 6-7 , 56 percent said they would support and 30 percent said they would oppose banning transgender girls and women from competing in high school and college sports. Meanwhile, 39 percent in the UMass Amherst poll said they would oppose policies to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth, while fewer, 35 percent, said they would support them. And in the Morning Consult poll, more were still in favor of the bans: 46 percent, compared to 39 percent opposed. But public opinion polling on transgender issues is often muddy, likely reflecting a high level of uncertainty and the fact that these are issues many Americans haven't grappled with until recently. For example, in an October CNN poll , registered voters were asked if they supported federal policies that were more supportive or more restrictive of transgender rights: Their answers were about evenly split between those options, but a plurality, 42 percent, said they "don't have strong feelings either way." That indicates that these issues may not be as pressing or important to many Americans as they are to politicians hoping to fan the culture war flames. — Monica Potts Split opinions on Trump's transition so far Trump's presidential transition plans have already caused a stir in Washington, especially over his controversial administration appointees , several of whom seem to have come via the Fox News green room or carry the same types of legal and ethical baggage the president himself carries. One nominee, former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz — whose nomination to attorney general scuttled the release of a House Ethics Committee review of sex trafficking allegations — already withdrew from consideration in the face of high-profile congressional drama over that report and his seemingly narrow odds of being confirmed. So, what do Americans think about Trump's transition and appointees? Fifty-four percent of voters surveyed in a Morning Consult poll from Nov. 15-17 and 59 percent in a YouGov/CBS News poll from Nov. 19-22 said they approved of Trump's transition so far. Of course, Americans tend to give newly elected officials grace as they gear up to take office. By comparison, the same two pollsters, respectively, found that 60 percent and 54 percent of Americans approved of Biden's transition at a similar point four years ago. When it comes to specific officials Trump plans to appoint to his administration, Americans may have an open mind, though many are unfamiliar with or unsure about specific picks. A YouGov/Yahoo News survey taken Nov. 14-18 found that 45 percent of Americans generally approved of Trump's Cabinet nominees so far, while 37 percent disapproved. In the Morning Consult poll, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Trump's choice for ambassador to Israel, had the highest net approval of 13 points among registered voters, though 25 percent said they didn't know or had no opinion about his potential appointment. Unsurprisingly, Gaetz was the least popular appointee on the list, and the only one with negative net approval (-7 points). The most familiar names were billionaire Elon Musk and 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who each had a 5-point net positive approval rating, with just 15-16 percent of respondents undecided about them. Beyond that, 21 percent to 37 percent of respondents said that they didn't know or weren't sure about each of the other appointees in the survey. The YouGov/CBS poll found that 53 percent of Americans feel "excited" or "optimistic" about what Trump will do as president, compared to 46 percent who feel "concerned" or "scared." One thing that hasn't changed, though, is deep partisan polarization over Trump himself. In an Echelon Insights poll from Nov. 14-18, favorable versus unfavorable opinions for Trump were tied at 49-49 percent. The same was true of the incoming majority party, with 48 percent saying they had a favorable view of the GOP, compared to 47 percent unfavorable. Those partisan divides are also evident when it comes to whether Americans think Trump should be allowed to make recess appointments , bypassing Senate approval if any of his appointees meet resistance, though a majority oppose the idea: 54 percent of voters (including 80 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents) said they disapprove of recess appointments, compared to 38 percent who approved (including 68 percent of Republicans and 33 percent of independents) in a Data for Progress survey from Nov. 15-18 . The share of Americans who said the Senate should hold confirmation hearings on Trump's nominees was even higher in the YouGov/CBS poll: around 3 in 4 overall, including more than half of Republicans. — Monica Potts More Americans trust the polls than not After every election cycle in recent memory, it seems, there's been a litany of articles declaring the death of polling and the end of its utility . With polls underestimating Trump for the third cycle in a row, this year is no different. But in fact, the polls had a pretty good year in 2024: The average error in state-level presidential polls was the lowest it's been in at least 25 years. A good year overall for the polls could help bolster public confidence after two cycles of larger-than-average error and constant narratives of polling's demise. So, how do Americans feel about polls now? It's a bit of a meta answer, but a new poll shows that a plurality of Americans continue to trust polling. Forty-nine percent of respondents in Echelon Insight's latest omnibus poll said that, after the election, they trust polls "a lot" or "somewhat," compared to the 45 percent who said they trust polls "a little" or "not at all." Seven percent said they weren't sure. — Cooper Burton Politics won't be on most tables this Thanksgiving This Thursday is Turkey Day, and according to a new poll , most Americans won't be eating alone: In a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, almost 40 percent of Americans say that they plan to have Thanksgiving at someone else's home this year. But while the TSA is predicting the days around Thanksgiving this year will be the busiest air travel days on record , almost 70 percent of those people also say they don't expect to travel more than an hour away for dinner, and almost 90 percent said that they would be driving rather than flying. As for what they'll be doing there, the most common activities respondents said they're likely to do on Thanksgiving Day were watching sports (35 percent) and talking about work and school (also 35 percent). And despite the reputation the holiday has for political infighting with relatives, only 26 percent of respondents thought it was likely that they would talk about the presidential election. Republicans were more likely to say so though: 36 percent of Trump voters said they expect to talk about the election, while only 24 percent of Harris voters said so. — Cooper Burton

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Mike McDaniel has seen a change in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa over the past month. “He's found a way to improve the way he plays the position throughout the game,” the Dolphins coach said Sunday, after Tagovailoa threw for four touchdowns in a dominant 34-15 win over the New England Patriots. “The most monumental thing that you have to overcome as a quarterback is playing the position regardless of the ebbs and flows," McDaniel added, "so not changing how you play based upon positive or negative results and letting every play stand on its own.” Tagovailoa has mastered that ability to remain even-keeled during Miami's three-game winning streak, McDaniel noted, highlighted by his 317-yard passing performance on Sunday. The Dolphins (5-6) have a thin margin for error the rest of the season but have kept themselves afloat with a strong stretch that includes two-straight 30-point games. With their win at New England (3-9) in Week 5, the Dolphins have swept their division rivals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. Tagovailoa, who moved to 7-0 in his career against New England, entered the game with a league-high 73.4% completion rate and went 29 for 40. He has 11 passing touchdowns and just one interception since returning from injured reserve in Week 8. “We’re still below the .500 threshold, and it’s a long way to where we want to get to," Tagovailoa said. “We’ll enjoy this win, but this next one is going to be big for us.” The Dolphins have a short turnaround with a game at Green Bay on Thursday. Backup Skylar Thompson replaced Tagovailoa with about 11 minutes left in what was already a blowout, but a bad handoff on his first play resulted in a fumble that was recovered by cornerback Christian Gonzalez and returned 63 yards for a touchdown. It cut New England's deficit to 31-15, and Tagovailoa returned the next drive. Miami's defense held the rest of the way. Linebacker Tyrel Dodson intercepted rookie quarterback Drake Maye on New England's penultimate drive, then Miami stopped the Patriots on fourth down on the next. Jaylen Waddle caught eight passes for a season-high 144 yards and a 23-yard touchdown that stretched Miami's lead to 31-0 entering the fourth. Running back De'Von Achane scored on a 9-yard screen pass and then walked into the end zone for an 11-yard TD in the first half. Jonnu Smith finished with 87 yards on nine catches to continue his strong first season as a Dolphin. One week after catching two touchdowns with a career-high 101 yards receiving, Smith found the end zone for a 7-yard TD catch on the Dolphins' second drive. New England was shut out until tight end Austin Hooper got behind the Dolphins defense for a wide-open 38-yard touchdown catch from Maye to make it 31-7 with 13:43 left. Maye completed 22 of 37 passes for 221 yards with 26 yards rushing. But he couldn't overcome an overall sloppy performance by the Patriots in which they got nothing going offensively until the final quarter and had 10 penalties accepted against them. “I always say I hate losing more than I like to win," Maye said. "We got our butts whipped today, and it’s only up from here. We’ve got a bright future and the right players in there for the Patriots.” New England's best drive of the first half lasted 12 plays and covered 80 yards but included three accepted offensive penalties and ended in a missed 45-yard field goal by Joey Slye. The Patriots forced a Dolphins punt and moved down the field again on the opening drive of the second half, with Maye completing an improvised 10-yard throw on third down to receiver Kendrick Bourne. New England then tried a double pass with Bourne, whose cross-field throw fell short of Rhamondre Stevenson on 3rd-and-17. DeMario Douglas led the Patriots with 61 yards receiving. Antonio Gibson had six rushes for 30 yards. With the loss, the Patriots will finish their third straight season below .500. Its the first time since 1991-93 New England has had three straight losing seasons. “Once those guys cross the white lines, there’s nothing I can do for them,” coach Jerod Mayo said. "There’s nothing any coach can do for them. It’s my job to continue to prepare not only them, but our coaches as well.” Dolphins: LB Anthony Walker Jr. sustained a noncontact hamstring injury in the second quarter. He was helped slowly off the field by trainers and did not return. Patriots: Host Indianapolis next Sunday. Dolphins: At Green Bay on Thursday. Senior safety Bronson Bonneval and his younger brother, sophomore outside linebacker Richard Bonneval, nicknamed the “Bash Brothers” play key roles on the strong side of the Tiger defense going into Friday’s 3:30 p.m. title game at the Caesars Superdome. Bronson Bonneval is a three-year starter and was a member of the 2022 that reached the DIII final. He played with their older brother, Brock, during his freshman and sophomore years. The older of the two current Dunham players was a wide receiver early in high school before shifting to defense. Dunham coach Neil Weiner describes Richard Bonneval as one of the team’s fiercest and surest tacklers despite his 5-foot-5 frame. “He might be the shortest in stature on the field in the Superdome on Friday, but he is absolutely one of our best football players,” Weiner said. “He's just got a nose for the football. He's always in the right position on defense. He's got great skills covering wide receivers when he needs to, and he'll come up and lay a lick on a lineman that pulls out to block in the run game. He’s just a great football player.” The duo their nickname because of their physical play on the field. It’s a title they proudly claim. “When teams throw a little out route or something, we both close in and then pop them,” Bronson said. “I guess that's where it came from.” Weiner said there have been several times when the two brothers sandwiched an opposing ball carrier to make a tackle. He complimented their ability to communicate on the field. Their communication comes naturally. But it is important to note that playing at Dunham is the first time the brothers have been on the same team since their flag football days. “It’s an incredible feeling, especially when I know he's on the same field as me at the same time,” Richard said. “A lot of people don't or are not able to play high school football. Not only am I able to play, but I'm able to do it with my brother, which is an incredible feeling.” Bronson played the role of the younger Bonneval brother two years ago and now he is the older brother on the team and one of the team leaders. “When I was younger, I always felt like I had a huge role to play and big shoes to fill being on that team with all those older guys,” he said. “They were great leaders for me. Now, I'm the older leader guy and it’s fun. You go out there and do what you do.” Friday’s game is Bronson Bonneval’s last high school game, one he refers to as the biggest game of his life up to this point. “I just want to enjoy it and leave it on the field,” he said. “I want to have no regrets and win this thing.”

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Andrew Ferguson as the next chair of the Federal Trade Commission . He will replace Lina Khan, who became a lightning rod for Wall Street and Silicon Valley by blocking billions of dollars’ worth of corporate acquisitions and suing Amazon and Meta while alleging anticompetitive behavior . Ferguson is already one of the FTC’s five commissioners, which is currently made up of three Democrats and two Republicans. “Andrew has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding, “Andrew will be the most America First, and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our Country’s History.” Related Articles National Politics | Donald Trump is returning to the world stage. The replacement of Khan likely means that the FTC will operate with a lighter touch when it comes to antitrust enforcement. The new chair is expected to appoint new directors of the FTC’s antitrust and consumer protection divisions. “These changes likely will make the FTC more favorable to business than it has been in recent years, though the extent to which is to be determined,” wrote Anthony DiResta, a consumer protection attorney at Holland & Knight, in a recent analysis . Deals that were blocked by the Biden administration could find new life with Trump in command. For example, the new leadership could be more open to a proposed merger between the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Kroger and Albertsons, which forged a $24.6 billion deal to combine in 2022. Two judges halted the merger Tuesday night. The FTC had filed a lawsuit in federal court earlier this year to block the merger, claiming the deal would eliminate competition, leading to higher prices and lower wages for workers. The two companies say a merger would help them lower prices and compete against bigger rivals like Walmart. One of the judges said the FTC had shown it was likely to prevail in the administrative hearing. Yet given the widespread public concern over high grocery prices, the Trump administration may not fully abandon the FTC’s efforts to block the deal, some experts have said. And the FTC may continue to scrutinize Big Tech firms for any anticompetitive behavior. Many Republican politicians have accused firms such as Meta of censoring conservative views, and some officials in Trump’s orbit, most notably Vice President-elect JD Vance, have previously expressed support for Khan’s scrutiny of Big Tech firms. In addition to Fergson, Trump also announced Tuesday that he had selected Jacob Helberg as the next undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment.

LAS VEGAS — Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. "As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It's an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world's premier racing series, and we're committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world," GM President Mark Reuss said. "This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM's engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level." The approval ends years of wrangling that launched a U.S. Justice Department investigation into why Colorado-based Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1, would not approve the team initially started by Michael Andretti. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Towriss is now a major part of the motorsports scene with ownership stakes in both Spire Motorsports' NASCAR team and Wayne Taylor Racing's sports car team. Walter is the chief executive of financial services firm Guggenheim Partners and the controlling owner of both the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and Premier League club Chelsea. "We're excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1," Towriss said. "Together, we're assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world." Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 world champion, will have an ambassador role with Cadillac F1. But his son, Michael, will have no official position with the organization now that he has scaled back his involvement with Andretti Global. "The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team," Michael Andretti posted on social media. "I'm very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!" The approval has been in works for weeks but was held until after last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix to not overshadow the showcase event of the Liberty Media portfolio. Max Verstappen won his fourth consecutive championship in Saturday night's race, the third and final stop in the United States for the top motorsports series in the world. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti's dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years, and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA. The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they've already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti's application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1's current grid. "General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners," Ben Sulayem said Monday. "I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application." Despite the FIA's acceptance of Andretti and General Motors from the start, F1 wasn't interested in Andretti — but did want GM. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. "Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024," F1 said in a statement. "Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." Yet another major shift in the debate over grid expansion occurred earlier this month with the announced resignation of Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, who was largely believed to be one of the biggest opponents of the Andretti entry. "With Formula 1's continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive US brand like GM/Cadillac to the grid and GM as a future power unit supplier could bring additional value and interest to the sport," Maffei said. "We credit the leadership of General Motors and their partners with significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1." President Joe Biden faced mounting criticism Monday for his decision to issue a sweeping pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, with detractors not only citing the breadth of the pardon itself but also the degree to which it breaks with the president's history of extolling the virtues of the judiciary as a bulwark against executive abuses of power. In fact, Biden took aim at these very abuses during a speech in July, in which he warned of a "dangerous precedent" created by the Supreme Court's decision that expanded the view of presidential immunity. "This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America," Biden said in July. "No one is above the law, not even the president of the United States." Biden's remarks were a response to the Supreme Court's July 1 ruling that expanded the view of presidential immunity, and which he criticized as fundamentally changing the separation of powers . "With today’s Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity, that fundamentally changed," Biden said in July. "For all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president can do," he added. (Alex Brandon-Pool/Getty Images) In their decision, justices writing for the 4-3 Supreme Court majority said that presidents are entitled to absolute immunity from any actions taken within the scope of "core constitutional powers" of the office. A presumption of immunity also applies to other actions taken while holding office, they said. Biden strenuously objected to that ruling, citing deep concerns over the risks of unchecked power in the executive branch — and the erosion of what he described as necessary parameters for a sitting president. The presidency, Biden said then, "is the most powerful office in the world. It’s an office that not only tests your judgment. But perhaps even more importantly, it’s an office that can test your character." "You not only face moments where you need the courage to exercise the full power of the presidency," Biden said in his speech. "You also face moments where you need the wisdom to respect the limits of the power of the office of the presidency." In announcing the pardon, Biden criticized the unfair investigation and prosecution of his son, a process he said was "infected" by politics and led to a "miscarriage of justice." "No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong," the president said in a statement Sunday. President Biden blasted a ruling by the Supreme Court earlier this year which he said essentially made it so there were ‘virtually no limits’ to presidential power. (Getty Images) But some critics also cited fears that Biden's pardon could further erode the public's view of the Justice Department — giving credence to Trump's frequent complaints that the Department of Justice is a political apparatus capable of being "weaponized," rather than a department that strives to act independently and largely without political influence.
