WASHINGTON – For years, Pat Verhaeghe didn’t think highly of Donald Trump as a leader. Then Verhaeghe began seeing more of Trump’s campaign speeches online and his appearances at sporting events. Recommended Videos There was even the former president’s pairing with Bryson DeChambeau as part of the pro golfer’s YouTube channel series to shoot an under-50 round of golf while engaging in chitchat with his partner. “I regret saying this, but a while ago I thought he was an idiot and that he wouldn’t be a good president,” said the 18-year-old first-time voter. “I think he’s a great guy now.” Verhaeghe isn't alone among his friends in suburban Detroit or young men across America. Although much of the electorate shifted right to varying degrees in 2024, young men were one of the groups that swung sharply toward Trump. More than half of men under 30 supported Trump, according to AP VoteCast , a survey of more than 120,000 voters, while Democrat Joe Biden had won a similar share of this group four years earlier. White men under 30 were solidly in Trump’s camp this year — about 6 in 10 voted for Trump — while young Latino men were split between the two candidates. Most Black men under 30 supported Democrat Kamala Harris, but about one-third were behind Trump. Young Latino men’s views of the Democratic Party were much more negative than in 2020, while young Black men’s views of the party didn’t really move. About 6 in 10 Latino men under 30 had a somewhat or very favorable view of the Democrats in 2020, which fell to about 4 in 10 this year. On the other hand, about two-thirds of young Black men had a favorable view of the Democrats this year, which was almost identical to how they saw the party four years ago. “Young Hispanic men, and really young men in general, they want to feel valued," said Rafael Struve, deputy communications director for Bienvenido, a conservative group that focused on reaching young Hispanic voters for Republicans this year. “They're looking for someone who fights for them, who sees their potential and not just their struggles.” Struve cited the attempted assassination of Trump during a July rally in Pennsylvania as one of the catalyzing moments for Trump’s image among many young men. Trump, Struve said, was also able to reach young men more effectively by focusing on nontraditional platforms like podcasts and digital media outlets. “Getting to hear from Trump directly, I think, really made all the difference," Struve said of the former president's appearances on digital media platforms and media catering to Latino communities, like town halls and business roundtables Trump attended in Las Vegas and Miami. Not only did Trump spend three hours on Joe Rogan's chart-topping podcast, but he took up DeChambeau's “Break 50” challenge for the golfer's more than 1.6 million YouTube subscribers. Trump already had an edge among young white men four years ago, although he widened the gap this year. About half of white men under 30 supported Trump in 2020, and slightly less than half supported Biden. Trump's gains among young Latino and Black men were bigger. His support among both groups increased by about 20 percentage points, according to AP VoteCast — and their feelings toward Trump got warmer, too. It wasn’t just Trump. The share of young men who identified as Republicans in 2024 rose as well, mostly aligning with support for Trump across all three groups. “What is most alarming to me is that the election is clear that America has shifted right by a lot,” said William He, founder of Dream For America, a liberal group that works to turn out young voters and supported Harris’ presidential bid. With his bombastic demeanor and a policy agenda centered on a more macho understanding of culture , Trump framed much of his campaign as a pitch to men who felt scorned by the country’s economy, culture and political system. Young women also slightly swung toward the former president, though not to the degree of their male counterparts. It's unclear how many men simply did not vote this year. But there's no doubt the last four years brought changes in youth culture and how political campaigns set out to reach younger voters. Democrat Kamala Harris' campaign rolled out policy agendas tailored to Black and Latino men, and the campaign enlisted a range of leaders in Black and Hispanic communities to make the case for the vice president. Her campaign began with a flurry of enthusiasm from many young voters, epitomized in memes and the campaign's embrace of pop culture trends like the pop star Charli XCX's “brat” aesthetic . Democrats hoped to channel that energy into their youth voter mobilization efforts. “I think most young voters just didn’t hear the message,” said Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, a liberal group that engages younger voters. Mayer said the Harris campaign’s pitch to the country was “largely convoluted” and centered on economic messaging that he said wasn’t easily conveyed to younger voters who were not already coming to political media. “And I think that the policies themselves were also very narrow and targeted when what we really needed was a simple, bold economic vision,” said Mayer. Trump also embraced pop culture by appearing at UFC fights, football games and appearing alongside comedians, music stars and social media influencers. His strategists believed that the former president’s ability to grab attention and make his remarks go viral did more for the campaign than paid advertisements or traditional media appearances. Trump's campaign also heavily cultivated networks of online conservative platforms and personalities supportive of him while also engaging a broader universe of podcasts, streaming sites, digital media channels and meme pages open to hearing him. “The right has been wildly successful in infiltrating youth political culture online and on campus in the last couple of years, thus radicalizing young people towards extremism,” said He, who cited conservative activist groups like Turning Point USA as having an outsize impact in online discourse. “And Democrats have been running campaigns in a very old fashioned way. The battleground these days is cultural and increasingly on the internet.” Republicans may lose their broad support if they don't deliver on improving Americans' lives, Struve cautioned. Young men, especially, may drift from the party in a post-Trump era if the party loses the president-elect's authenticity and bravado. Bienvenido, for one group, will double down in the coming years to solidify and accelerate the voting pattern shifts seen this year, Struve said. “We don’t want this to be a one and done thing,” he said. ___ Associated Press writer Joey Cappelletti in Lansing, Michigan, and AP polling editor Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux contributed to this report.
Could the Rolls-Royce share price hit £6 – or even £7?5 Powerful Ways to Streamline Your Work Processes with AIPresident Joe Biden's trip to Angola next week is his first to Africa as president, and the first visit to Angola by an American leader since independence from Portugal in 1975. It comes as the governing People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party prepares to celebrate 50 years of rule, and Angola gets ready to host the US-Africa Business Summit in mid-2025 The Biden administration has tried to increase its Africa engagement since 2021, through sharpened focus within its Africa network, increased official visits and important new initiatives such as the Lobito Corridor. The Corridor is planned as part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), a G7 initiative designed to compete with Chinese influence head on, in Africa and beyond. In these respects, US-Angola relations are at their strongest since 1993. This is a dramatic change. During the Cold War, Angola was a one-party Marxist-Leninist state, allied to the Soviet Union and Cuba. The country fought a long civil war with UNITA, a rebel group supported by apartheid South Africa and the US. (UNITA was the second largest recipient of US covert aid after the Afghan Mujahadin until 1992, poisoning relations between Washington and Luanda). The tide began to turn in May 1993, when President Bill Clinton formally recognized the government elected in Angola's first ever multiparty elections. US oil companies, Chevron and Exxon, have prospered in the country, and Angola was an important source of US oil imports. That continued until 2006, when this trade plateaued and then sharply declined following the US shale boom. Luanda's subsequent relationship with Washington has been patchy. At the end of the civil war in 2003, the Angolans complained to a senior US official that Washington supported an international donors conference for Afghanistan, but not for Angola. The reply, reportedly, was blunt. Bilateral relations with the US subsequently cooled, and Angola sought diplomatic and economic relations with China - resulting in $45 billion of infrastructure investment over the last twenty years. Angola still owes Chinese lenders $17 billion, constituting about 40 per cent of its total debt. However, Angola's strategic importance to Washington has increased in the last five years. There have been two key drivers for this. The first is João Lourenço's ascendency to the Angolan presidency in 2017, after almost 40 years of rule by former President Dos Santos. Lourenço's administration has seen Angolan foreign policy move away from ideology towards pragmatic multipolarity, becoming truly non-aligned. Luanda has sought to reduce its closeness to Beijing and Moscow, voting in favour of the 2022 UN General Assembly resolution condemning the Russian annexation referendums in Ukraine. Meanwhile Angola has deepened relations with the US - but also the UAE, Turkey and France. In early October the country joined Le Francophonie as an official observer, and Lourenço is due to visit Paris in early 2025, following the visit of Emmanuel Macron to Angola in 2023. Angola has also indicated it would like to join the Commonwealth. Second, Angola's strategic location is important for Washington. Angola has played a valuable mediation role to end confrontation between the DRC and Rwanda in recent years - it shares a long northern border with the DRC. Biden will be keen to ensure Angola's continuing support for those efforts. US officials were deeply involved in meetings on the fringes of this year's UN General Assembly, working to get a DRC- Rwanda ceasefire (signed in Luanda this July) to stick. President Lourenço is also seeking election to chairperson of the African Union in 2025 - an appointment that Washington would welcome. Biden will also focus on the Lobito Corridor. This project, to rehabilitate a 1,300-kilometre railway linking Angola's coast to the mineral fields of the DRC and Zambia, is the first strategic economic corridor launched under the PGII. The Corridor runs from the port of Lobito, on the Atlantic Ocean, to the town of Luau on Angola's north-eastern border with the DRC and a further 400 kilometres into the DRC mining town of Kolwezi. A branch line to Zambia is also envisaged. The project is intended to transport resources including copper and cobalt, critical for a new generation of batteries that will power the energy transition. The resilience of the strategic mineral supply chain is important for US and European technology industries. The Corridor is also intended as a crucial demonstration that the West can deliver on infrastructure projects in Africa. It may also help to engage the US private sector in broader investments on the continent, which have to date remained tepid (beyond hydrocarbons and critical minerals). But funding for the Corridor looks more uncertain following the election of Donald Trump. The Lobito project is aimed to compete with China. But both Western and Chinese firms will be able to use the infrastructure it delivers. In fact, a joint venture between Chinese Zijin Mining and Canada's Ivanhoe Mines was the Lobito Atlantic Railway's first customer. That may make its value questionable to Trump, a US president who will likely define his administration in large measure by competition with Beijing. Regardless, Biden's trip to Angola is a reminder to future White House incumbents that, unlike during the Cold War, the world is no longer defined by superpower competition. African leaders living in a multipolar world will not tolerate being caught up in a competition between Washington and Beijing. Should Trump fail to back Lobito, EU and African Development Bank investment is likely to continue. Donald Trump and his successors should take note: Angola, and countries like it, have many partners to choose from in a world of increasing competition for access to Africa's vital resources. Anthony Edwards’ leadership had to take another step forward this week for TimberwolvesOTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s latest swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump, calling opponent Kamala Harris’s loss a setback for women’s progress, was “not helpful” to ongoing negotiations over a potential 25-per-cent border tariff, said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Thursday. “I think the American people voted pretty decisively for the Republicans, and for President-elect Donald Trump in particular,” said Smith. Smith’s rebuke echoes similar comments from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who said premiers raised their concerns with Trudeau on a call with the prime minister on Wednesday evening. Ford said he was “sure the prime minister got that message loud and clear.” Smith was speaking to the media Thursday after Alberta announced a $29-million border patrol team intended to stop the flow of fentanyl over the U.S.-Canada border. Trump has demanded that Canada crack down on the drug and threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian goods if enforcement doesn’t improve. “The concerns that president-elect Trump has expressed regarding fentanyl are, quite frankly, the same concerns that I and the premier have had,” said Alberta deputy premier Mike Ellis in an interview with the National Post on Thursday. “The stuff is going all over the place,” said Ellis. “North, south, east and west.” The section of the U.S. Border Patrol that includes Montana, Wyoming and Idaho has apprehended 1.2 kilograms of fentanyl at Canadian border crossings between October 2023 and September 2024, two-thirds of its total drug haul. Just one kilogram of fentanyl can yield up to 500,000 doses of the powerful synthetic opioid, say police. Ellis said that he wasn’t worried the border patrol team would divert resources away from shutting down fentanyl super labs like the one recently discovered in the northwestern Alberta town of Valleyview , 1,000 km away from the Montana border. “At the risk of stating the obvious, the facility in Valleyview wasn’t just manufacturing and selling product for the neighbourhood,” said Ellis. Ellis said that there was only so much the province could do to curb the booming in-house production of fentanyl and other synthetic street drugs, which he attributed to Ottawa’s lax approach to punishing drug crimes. “Production is up because of soft on crime policies,” said Ellis. “It’s as simple as that.” “The consequences of getting caught (in Canada) are maybe a couple years’ house arrest. Whereas, I could be looking at 10 to 20 years in prison if I go and commit the same crime across the border in the U.S.” Ellis joined Smith earlier in the day for the unveiling of the Interdiction Patrol Team, a new specialized unit of the Alberta Sheriffs dedicated to sweeping the area near the province’s border with Montana for drugs, guns and human trafficking. The unit will include 51 uniformed officers and 10 heavy-duty drones rigged for the area’s cold temperatures and high winds. The unit is expected to be operational early next year. Federal Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc is expected to announce new border security measures next week. LeBlanc’s office did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the announcement out of Alberta. Longtime Tesla investor Ross Gerber on why Musk’s ties to Trump might not boost the EV makerJust over six months from its full release, XDefiant is now confirmed to be shutting down. Executive Producer Mark Rubin confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), announcing servers will close on June 3, 2025. After weeks of speculation regarding player count and ongoing support , XDefiant is officially on its way out. Support for Ubiosft’s FPS is being tapered off in the coming months, with refunds being offered for any players who purchased premium bundles in the past 30 days. New downloads of the game will no longer be available, meaning only players with the game installed can continue grinding if they so choose. Season 3 will still roll out as planned, though no new content is prepared for the period beyond that. Hello XDefiant Fans, I am unfortunately here today to announce that XDefiant will be shutting down. Starting today (December 3, 2024), new downloads and player registrations will no longer be available. We will still release our Season 3 content in the near future (exact date... “We regret to inform you that we are initiating the sunset process starting today,” a Ubisoft blog post outlined shortly after on December 3, 2024. While the game will remain playable through to June 3, 2025, no new players will be able to download the game and join in. Meanwhile, any player who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack , the most expensive cosmetic pack at launch, priced at $69.99 USD, will be issued a full refund. On top of that, any players who purchased digital currency or Season Passes in the last 30 days will also be fully refunded. Acknowledging the game’s progress, Rubin expressed how proud he was of the development team for sticking to their guns. “[XDefiant] broke internal records for the fastest game to surpass 5 million users and in the end we had over 15 million players play our game,” he claimed on X. Related: Of course, news of XDefiant’s demise comes just weeks after the most recent update from Rubin , who argued the game wasn’t going away anytime soon. “There are no plans to shut down after Season 4,” he claimed just weeks prior on October 16. While admitting at the time, that “numbers [were] down,” Rubin remained adamant about long-term support for the FPS. At this stage, leakers had already unearthed all sorts of planned content , including crossovers with the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and more. On the back of XDefiant’s end, Ubisoft studios around the globe have been impacted. Up to 277 employees are reportedly being laid off as Ubisoft closes its San Francisco and Osaka offices and ramps down its Sydney office too. Half of the remaining XDefiant team will be transitioned onto other projects, according to insider Stephen Totilo . XDefiant was initially touted as a rival to Activision’s FPS juggernaut Call of Duty. Employing a number of former CoD developers and professional players alike, open communication was at the forefront of it all. Built from the ground up as a free-to-play FPS, it had a turbulent development with multiple delays on the path to its early 2024 release. When the full game finally landed, it did so with a wide range of bugs and performance issues, but nonetheless struck a chord with a smaller audience. In the months that followed, new content drops added Factions, maps, weapons, and expanded progression systems, while frequent updates continued to iron out the early kinks ranging from netcode problems to overpowered abilities (looking at you Spiderbot). By the time servers close, XDefiant will have been live for a total of 378 days.WASHINGTON: Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk’s net worth has surpassed $400 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, setting a new milestone Wednesday for the world’s richest person. The jump in wealth, the business news outlet reported, came after SpaceX and its investors agreed to purchase as much as $1.25 billion of insider shares in a transaction that valued the rocket and satellite company at about $350 billion. The transaction increased Musk’s personal wealth by about $50 billion to $440 billion, Bloomberg said. Musk’s wealth, largely based on the share price of Tesla and the valuation of SpaceX, already took a huge leap after Donald Trump won last month’s US presidential election. Tesla’s share price is up by about 65 percent since the vote in November. “What’s really crazy about this is that almost no investors wanted to sell shares even at a $350B valuation!” Musk wrote in a reply to a post on X referring to the Bloomberg report. He added that SpaceX has reduced the number of shares it bought back from employees in order to bring in some new investors. Musk has been a prominent political donor and advocate for Trump, pumping a staggering $270 million into the Republican’s campaign. He has been an ever-present sidekick for Trump since his election victory, inviting him to watch a rocket launch in Texas by his SpaceX company. Musk’s businesses all have varying degrees of interactions with US and foreign governments, and his proximity to Trump has raised concerns that Musk will be able to give advantage to his own interests. Musk is also expected to secure a reduction in regulations for Tesla as well as elimination of tax credits on electric vehicles that will punish the car-maker’s rivals. Trump has selected Musk to co-head the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, which is set to deliver billions of dollars of cuts in federal spending and slash government red tape. Besides Tesla, Musk also heads brain technology startup Neuralink. Both SpaceX and Neuralink rely heavily on government regulation and policy and could benefit from a business-friendly administration. Musk also owns social media site X and tunnel builder The Boring Company. Musk is followed on the billionaires list by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos – with a net worth of $243.7 billion, while Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is in the third spot with a net worth of $223.4 billion. — AgenciesCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dominic Zvada kicked a 21-yard field goal with 45 seconds left and Michigan stunned No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday, likely ending the Buckeyes ’ hopes of returning to the Big Ten title game. Kalel Mullings broke away for a 27-yard run, setting up the Wolverines (7-5, 5-4) at Ohio State's 17-yard line with two minutes remaining in the game. The drive stalled at the 3, and Zvada came on for the chip shot. Ohio State (10-2, 7-2, No. 2 CFP) got the ball back but couldn't move it, with Will Howard throwing incomplete on fourth down to seal the Wolverines' fourth straight win over their bitter rival. “You come to Michigan to play this game,” Zvada said. “So, it's the biggest one of the year. It's the one that everyone looks forward to, and to be able to come in here and take the win, it's amazing.” This Ohio State loss in the “The Game” might have been the toughest of the past four because Michigan was unranked and wrapping up a disappointing season. The Wolverines were also playing without a couple of top players: tight end Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson. The Buckeyes were favored by 21 points, the widest point spread for this rivalry since 1978, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Records — and point spreads, for that matter — rarely mean much when these two teams meet. “Our defense played outstanding," Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said. "We held a high-powered offense to 10 points, 77 rushing yards.” The Buckeyes were off all afternoon. Howard was 19 for 33 for 175 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and Jayden Fielding missed two field-goal attempts. The run game was hardly there. “It's hard, man,” an emotional Howard said. “I really don’t have much right now. I do know we're a two-loss team. We're going to get into the playoffs and make a run. But, I mean, this one hurts.” Mullings was Michigan's primary weapon. He rushed for 116 yards and the Wolverines only touchdown of the game in the first half as neither team could get much going offensively on the frigid afternoon. “They made plays, we made plays, so as the game wore on you could definitely, slowly feel them starting to lose confidence, lose that energy and lose that faith,” Mullings said. Howard was clunky all day. In the first half he threw an interception from deep in his own territory that led to Michigan's touchdown. He went out for a play in the second quarter to be checked for a head injury. After the game, he said he was fine. “We're very disappointed, and never thought this would happen right here,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. “We expected to win this game and go play in the Big Ten championship game.” After the game, Michigan players attempted to plant their flag at midfield and were confronted by Ohio State players. A skirmish ensued as both teams pushed and shoved before being separated. Michigan: Did just enough and caught Ohio State on an off day. Ohio State: It's inexplicable how badly the Buckeyes played in their biggest game of the season. They would need No. 4 Penn State and No. 10 Indiana to lose later Saturday in order to make it into the Big Ten title game next week. There has been talk all season about how many of the Ohio State team leaders, including receiver Emeka Egbuka, running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end Jack Sawyer, chose to return for another year instead of entering the NFL draft because they wanted to beat Michigan at least once. Those players were inconsolable after the game. One of them, linebacker Cody Simon, was asked how he felt. “I just can't speak that right now,” Simon said. “I feel like we let the whole Buckeye nation down.” Michigan will wait for a minor bowl game. Ohio State, assuming either Penn State or Indiana wins on Saturday, will see how the final College Football Playoff rankings shakeout on Dec. 8. NEW YORK — Donald Trump’s attorneys have asked the judge who presided over his criminal hush money case to dismiss the indictment and vacate the jury’s guilty verdicts — arguing their client is a victim of the same “raw politics” President Joe Biden cited in pardoning his son, Hunter, according to filings made public Tuesday. “President Biden argued that ‘raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,'” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove wrote in the lengthy and politically charged filing, referring to Biden’s weekend statement announcing a 10-year pardon for his son. B.C. Premier David Eby said he supports the proposed “all-of-Canada approach” to respond to president-elect Donald Trump’s tariffs threat. Trump has said both Canada and Mexico need to address illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. or face tariffs on all American imports. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a second virtual First Ministers’ Meeting on the Canada-U.S. relationship. In the past, Eby has had some strong words about the proposed tariffs and the impact they could have in British Columbia. That did not change following the meeting on Wednesday. “President-elect Trump’s unjustified threat of tariffs on Canadian goods would be a disaster for workers and businesses on both sides of the border, and we support the proposed all-of-Canada approach to respond to this threat,” Eby said in a statement. “At (Wednesday’s) national meeting, I brought forward the issues and the solutions I have been hearing from people and businesses in British Columbia. We will keep doing our part in B.C. to bring together business and labour leaders to safeguard local industries against Trump’s tariffs, and keep good jobs right here in B.C.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said after the meeting that the federal government has agreed to his “specific asks” to add police resources to the border and have Health Canada share data on where fentanyl found in Canada is originating from. “They have a plan, but it’s one thing to have a plan. Now we have to implement it,” he told reporters at Queen’s Park. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who also co-chairs the revived cabinet committee on U.S. relations with LeBlanc, told reporters several premiers spoke “strongly in favour of a robust Canadian response to unjustified tariffs” if Trump follows through on his threat in January.
