The watchdog report examined a number of areas, including whether major intelligence failures preceded the riot and whether the FBI in some way provoked the violence. Claims spreading online focus on the report's finding that 26 FBI informants were in Washington for election-related protests on Jan. 6, including three who had been tasked with traveling to the city to report on others who were potentially planning to attend the events. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is keeping elite company. The Japanese superstar caps 2024 by winning The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the third time, tying him with basketball great Michael Jordan. He trails only four-time winners Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and LeBron James. “I’m very honored,” Ohtani said through translator Matt Hidaka in an exclusive interview with the AP. ”Obviously all the hard work has paid off. Maybe next year, I’ll get the award again.” In balloting by 74 sports journalists from the AP and its members, Ohtani received 48 votes. He previously won the award in 2023 and 2021 , when he was with the Angels. “Growing up in Japan, I did follow Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods,” he said. “I would see their accolades and how they were successful in the United States.” The AP honor has been given out since 1931. Golfer Babe Didrikson won six times, the most by a man or woman. Swimmer Léon Marchand of France, who won four gold medals at the Paris Olympics, was second with 10 votes in balloting announced Monday. Golfer Scottie Scheffler, whose victories this year included the Masters and an Olympic gold medal, was third with nine. The AP Female Athlete of the Year will be announced Tuesday. Moving from the beleaguered Los Angeles Angels to the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, Ohtani won his third Most Valuable Player award and first in the National League, led his new team to its eighth World Series championship and created Major League Baseball’s 50/50 club by hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases. Ohtani signed a then-record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers in December 2023. Already a two-way superstar, he embellished his reputation even further despite not pitching all season while he rehabilitated from a second major right elbow surgery he had in September 2023. Ohtani went wild on offense, making every at-bat a must-see moment. The 6-foot-4 designated hitter batted a career-high .310 while easily surpassing his previous career highs in home runs and stolen bases. In September, he reached the previously unheard of 50/50 mark in a performance for the ages . Against the Miami Marlins in Florida, Ohtani went 6 for 6 with three homers, 10 RBIs, two stolen bases and 17 total bases. "It wouldn’t shock me if he went 60/60 and 20 wins a year from now,” Brad Ausmus, who managed the Angels in 2019 during Ohtani’s second season in Anaheim, said recently. “This guy is the greatest athlete to ever play the sport of baseball and there’s not a close second.” Ohtani said he knew the Dodgers' franchise record for most homers in a season was 49. His previous best was 46, set in 2021. "I kind of wanted to get over that bar,” he said. “I was pleasantly surprised I was able to pass that record.” Ohtani carried the Dodgers offensively during the regular season, and he stayed healthy until Game 2 of the World Series. He injured his left shoulder trying to steal second base against the New York Yankees and finished the Series playing hurt. He underwent surgery a few days after the Dodgers celebrated their championship in early November. "I don’t have full range of motion yet, but it feels a lot better,” he told the AP. “There’s no pain. There’s obviously still a little bit of tightness, but slowly but surely it’s getting better.” Ohtani recently received an updated rehab schedule, and he’s focused on the near-term. “It’s the small steps that I think are very important to get me to the ultimate goal, which is to just get back healthy,” he said. Ohtani is also throwing in the 70 mph range, which is typical for pitchers early in the offseason. "I’m going to continue to ramp up slowly,” he said. The Dodgers’ rotation for next season is in flux, and Ohtani is waiting to see how it shakes out. "We may go with a five-man rotation with a bullpen (game), which is what we did a lot during this season or we may have a six-man rotation,” he said. “But it’s all about balancing out when we can get rest and recuperate. We’ll see where that takes us along the playoff chase. I’ve got to obviously pace myself, but again that situation will guide us to how we get there.” The Dodgers open the 2025 season in Japan, where Ohtani is even more closely watched . "My personal goal is to be fully healthy by the time the opening games do start,” he said. “To be able to pitch and hit would be great, but the situation will kind of guide itself.” Each time Ohtani comes to the plate or steps on the mound, there’s great pressure and expectation for him to perform spectacular feats. "I just go out there and try to stay within myself,” he said. “I can only control what I can control and that’s where you trust your teammates. The guys behind me, you trust they’re going to make the plays for you. I don’t really try to overthink it.” Ohtani generated big bucks for the Dodgers off the field, too. Fans traveled from Japan in droves to see him play around the U.S. At Dodger Stadium, they paid extra for tours of baseball’s third-oldest venue narrated by Japanese-speaking guides and to be on the field during pre-game batting practice. A majority of the fans bought Ohtani-branded merchandise, especially his No. 17 jersey. Ohtani’s presence also helped the Dodgers land a bevy of new Japanese sponsors. Because Ohtani prefers to speak Japanese and use an interpreter with the media, he is shrouded in a bit of mystique. Asked before his first postgame series if he was nervous, he dropped a one-word answer in English: “Nope,” which drew laughter. Japanese-born Dodgers manager Dave Roberts observed Ohtani’s behind-the-scenes interactions with his teammates, coaches and staff, and came away impressed. "I really do believe that as good of a ballplayer as he is, he’s a much better person. He’s very kind, considerate, he cares,” Roberts told the AP. “I’m just proud of any fame or glory or award that he receives because he just does it in such a respectful and humble way.” Ohtani relishes his privacy and rarely shares details about himself off the field. That’s why his February announcement via Instagram that he had wed Mamiko Tanaka , a former basketball player, stunned his new teammates and the rest of the world. The following month, after the Dodgers arrived in South Korea to open the season, he was enveloped in scandal when his longtime interpreter and friend , Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the Dodgers after being accused of using millions of dollars of Ohtani’s money to place bets with an illegal bookmaker. His new teammates rallied around Ohtani, who was found to have no part in the wrongdoing, and publicly it didn’t seem to affect him even if he was privately distressed by it. By June, the uproar had subsided. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to federal bank and tax fraud charges and admitted to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani. The public got a glimpse of Ohtani’s softer side in August, when his dog Decoy delivered a first pitch to his owner on their shared bobblehead night. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje exchanged an endearing high-five with Ohtani at the plate. As a result, Decoy became a celebrity in his own right, with his breed (pronounced COY-ker-HUND-che) making the list of the most mispronounced words of 2024. He and Ohtani were mentioned during the telecast of last month’s National Dog Show, where the small Spaniel-type breed was among the competitors. "The number of the breed has kind of dwindled, so by him gaining a little bit of popularity hopefully that brings up the number of his breed,” Ohtani said. “I do feel like we were able to, in a small way, contribute to the popularity of the dog and I’m sure Decoy himself would be happy about that.” Ohtani will be looking to top himself next year while eyeing a repeat World Series title. "It’s almost like right now you can lock in the Most Valuable Player in the National League award because no one has that ability or talent,” Roberts said. "I’m just excited to see what ’25 has for Shohei Ohtani.” AP MLB: https://apnews.com/mlbChiefs Reveal Solution to 'Pop' vs. Hunt 'Problem'

One of the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal is headed to the South Carolina Gamecocks . True freshman Air Noland confirmed Monday that he has decided to transfer to South Carolina. Noland spent last season at Ohio State, where he did not play in any games behind Will Howard. https://t.co/0h4awOu2gU — Pʀᴇɴᴛɪss Aɪʀ Nᴏʟᴀɴᴅ. (@AirNoland_) December 23, 2024 Noland will have all four years of eligibility remaining at South Carolina. Noland’s decision is a bit of a surprise largely because the Gamecocks have an entrenched quarterback. LaNorris Sellers broke out in 2024, throwing for 2,274 yards and rushing for 655 more while tallying 24 total touchdowns. Sellers will be a sophomore in 2024 as well, so Noland does not necessarily have a path to starting anytime soon. A consensus four-star recruit and top five quarterback in the 2024 class, Noland was recruited by the likes of Alabama and Oregon before landing with Ohio State. His visit to South Carolina was the only known one he took after entering the portal this time around. Sindh govt extending best support to Rescue 1122, KMC fire dept: Nasir The Sindh government has been extending the best possible support to Rescue 1122 and the KMC’s Fire Department to protect lives and assets whenever fire emergencies threaten Karachi's high-rises and industries. Sindh Minister for Planning & Development and Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated this while speaking as the chief guest at the 14th Fire Safety & Security Convention-2024 organised by the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH). He stated that the provincial government has been meeting the needs of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and the Rescue 1122 service. This effort ensures that both agencies have access to the latest firefighting and rescue equipment and machinery, helping to minimize losses during fire emergencies, he added. He said the provincial government was fully cognisant of its obligations in this regard but it was equally important that concerned businessmen and industrialists should also show responsibility to preempt fire emergencies. Shah said the industries and multi-storey commercial buildings in Karachi should have adequate safety arrangements against fire incidents. These safety measures should have been taken given the recurring fire emergencies in Karachi, causing massive loss of lives and precious properties, he said. The planning and development minister proposed the formation of a task force to implement fire safety laws by industries and businesses in Karachi. He said the proposed task force should comprise representatives of the government, relevant civic agencies, industrialists and businessmen to discuss and finalise the strategy to ensure compliance with the fire safety laws by the private sector. Ahmed Azeem Alvi, president of the SITE Association of Industry, suggested that the curriculum for school education and vocational training in Pakistan should include fire safety as a compulsory subject to ensure that the younger generation is trained to deal with fire emergencies. He said the government should incentivise small businesses and industries to adopt the fire safety protocols to protect their workforce and assets. Alvi suggested that the relevant government agencies and representatives of the businesses and industries should enhance their coordination to prevent fire emergencies in urban areas. Junaid Naqi, president of the Korangi Association of Trade & Industry, said that fire safety laws should be taught to school-going children in Pakistan like Japanese students compulsorily are trained to deal with earthquake disasters. He urged the industries to adopt safety laws and the latest technology to prevent the loss of precious lives of labourers due to fire emergencies. Rehana Yasmeen, Rescue Commander at Sindh Emergency Rescue Service, said the Rescue 1122 service since its launching in Sindh had attended to over 700,000 cases of medical emergencies and 22,000 road traffic accidents to save precious lives in distress. She said that soon motorcycle-based rescue service would be launched in Karachi given that emergency assistance couldn’t timely reach densely populated areas where congested roads and streets didn’t allow the operation of the regular vehicles used by the first responders. She told the audience that 79 female rescuers had so far been hired by Rescue 1122 service to lower the gender disparity in the provision of services by emergency relief organisations.Georgia quarterback Carson Beck on Saturday announced his plans to enter the NFL draft, five days after having season-ending elbow surgery . Beck, a fifth-year senior, made his NFL plans official on social media. He suffered a right elbow injury in the first half of the Bulldogs’ 22-19 overtime win over Texas in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 7 in Atlanta. Beck had surgery on Monday to repair his ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles. Beck is expected to begin throwing next spring. He could have returned for a sixth season but instead will enter the NFL draft. Beck posted on Instagram: “The past five years at the University of Georgia have been nothing short of a dream come true and I will forever cherish the memories that have been made.” Gunner Stockton, who took over for Beck in the second half against Texas, will make his first start for Georgia on Wednesday in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Beck has started every game of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He was 24-3 as a starter. Beck passed for 3,941 yards with 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2023 but had more difficulties with turnovers this season as he passed for 28 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards before his injury in the SEC championship game. Georgia coach Kirby Smart stuck with Beck despite a midseason string of eight interceptions in three games. “Obviously, you look at the stats and they aren’t the same stats as the year before,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Saturday when reflecting on Beck's career. “The goal in this league is to win the SEC championship. And he was the quarterback of that team that got us to that game and put us in that position.” Added offensive guard Tate Ratledge: “I think Carson should be remembered as a great player. He’s who got us to this point of the season.” Stockton, a sophomore, completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with one interception against Texas. He signed with Georgia as a highly recruited in-state player from Rabun County High School, where he broke Trevor Lawrence's state high school record for most career touchdown passes and Deshaun Watson's state record for combined rushing and passing touchdowns in a career. “Obviously when he was in high school, he was one of the best to ever do it in Georgia,” Bulldogs linebacker Chaz Chambliss said of Stockton before adding that he “just has that fire in him.” Georgia was preparing to start Stockton before announcing Beck's season-ending injury. Stockton will attempt to join a short list of quarterbacks who have been promoted from backup jobs to win national championships. The list includes Georgia's Stetson Bennett, who began the 2021 season as the backup to JT Daniels before taking over the starting job in October. Lawrence took over for Kelly Bryant during Clemson's 2018 championship season. The best comparison to Stockton's challenge during the CFP era may be Cardale Jones on the 2014 Ohio State national championship team. Jones' first start was the Big Ten championship game following an injury to J.T. Barrett, who began the preseason as the expected backup before Braxton Miller's injury. Stockton led Georgia to a touchdown on his first drive against Texas and has had extra practice time during the Bulldogs' break after receiving a first-round bye in the playoff. “To see his growth since he’s been here, he’s been waiting patiently, he’s been sitting and putting his time in and he’s been working while he was waiting,” Georgia safety Malaki Starks said Friday. “And now he gets a chance to go out there and prove what he can do. And, you know, I believe in him 100%.” Starks, who is from Jefferson, Ga., often faced Stockton's Rabun County teams in high school. “He’s always been, you know, that guy, you know, since I’ve been growing up,” Starks said. “He’s an easy guy to follow. I mean, Gunner is a great guy, you know, very respectful, great parents. I mean, he’s the guy that you want to lead. And a lot of guys have confidence in him. And I think you saw it during games in the SEC (championship game), how much the guys believed in him.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Israeli attorney general orders probe into report that alleged Netanyahu's wife harassed opponents

Canadians bristle - or shrug - at Trump's trollingQatar tribune The global fight against climate change could face a grave threat with the election of Donald Trump whose rhetoric suggests he will make a sharp pivot towards fossil fuel dominance, the Al-Attiyah Foundation writes in its latest Special Report titled Trump 2.0: Implications for Energy, Environment, and Trade. In an interview with Fox News in the build up to the November presidential election, Trump explained his plans for United States fossil-fuel production if he wins, saying: “We are going to – I used this expression, now everyone else is using it so I hate to use it, but – drill, baby, drill. Despite such strident remarks, Mr. Trump’s zeal to amp up oil production and repeal the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the landmark climate law that is pouring more than $390 billion into electric vehicles, batteries and other clean energy technology, will quickly face a political test. A cornerstone of the outgoing President Joe Biden’s climate policy, the IRA has already attracted over $200 billion in clean energy investments since its enactment. Although a complete repeal of the IRA is unlikely due to bipartisan support, as much as 30% of its climate funding could be at risk. Electric vehicle (EV) tax credits, valued at $12 billion, are particularly vulnerable, potentially undermining the rapid growth of the U.S. EV market. Meanwhile, China leads globally, with more than 50% of its newly registered cars being EVs or plug-in hybrids—twice the global average. Trump’s proposed rollbacks could leave the U.S. trailing in this critical sector, further delaying domestic progress toward reducing emissions. In parallel, Trump’s administration is expected to champion fossil fuel-aligned technologies, such as carbon capture and “blue” hydrogen, which could sustain jobs. While these measures may boost traditional energy sectors, they risk slowing advancements in renewable energy infrastructure and grid modernisation. The IRA’s technology-neutral tax credits, extended until 2032, have been a driving force behind renewable energy projects, but Trump’s policies may shift focus to emissions mitigation tied to fossil fuels, aligning with his “energy dominance” strategy. On the global stage, Trump’s energy agenda could deepen geopolitical tensions. Proposed tariffs on clean energy imports, alongside his confrontational trade stance with China, might disrupt supply chains and elevate costs for key energy technologies. During his previous term, tariffs on Chinese solar panels reached 25%, inflating domestic production costs and slowing clean technology deployment. Similarly, his withdrawal from international climate agreements and easing of environmental regulations could strain collaborations with allies and impact global efforts to mitigate climate change. During his campaign, Trump extolled the United States’ energy resources saying they have “more energy — we have more liquid gold, as I call it, under our feet than Saudi Arabia, than Russia, than anybody” and that “we’re going to be energy-dominant”. To this end, Trump’s fossil fuel agenda also highlights the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other sensitive areas for potential drilling, aiming to boost U.S. oil and gas output. However, higher production costs—ranging between $64 and $70 per barrel for new wells—could limit profitability. Even with regulatory easing, these initiatives may take years to materialise fully. While Trump’s policies may bring short-term economic benefits to fossil fuel sectors, the long-term implications for the U.S.’s role in clean energy leadership remain uncertain. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jaren Jackson Jr. had 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, Zach Edey also scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies set a franchise scoring record in blowing out the skidding Toronto Raptors 155-126 on Thursday night. Desmond Bane added 19 points, Jaylen Wells scored 17 and Ja Morant had 15 points and nine assists as Memphis won for the third time in four games. Toronto lost its ninth straight and fell to 1-14 on the road. RJ Barrett led the Raptors with 27 points, and Scottie Barnes added 26. Chris Boucher finished with 15. Both teams played porous defense for three quarters and each had reached 100 points before the fourth started. A burst by Memphis in the third took the lead to 22. The 155 points were the most given up by the Raptors this season. Takeaways Raptors: Despite the skid, Toronto had played close games recently. Of the previous seven, only one was decided by more than 10 points.
