U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian said he'll rule promptly on Combs’ bail request after the defense and prosecution file letters by noon Monday fleshing out some of the arguments they made during at a two-hour hearing in Manhattan federal court. Combs’ lawyers pitched having him await trial under around-the-clock surveillance either at his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge scoffed at that location — at an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their $50 million bail proposal, secured by his Florida home, essentially amounts to keeping Combs on house arrest instead of in custody at the troubled Brooklyn federal jail where he’s been held for 67 days since his September arrest. Under their plan, Combs' lawyers said he'll be under near-total restrictions on his ability to see or contact anyone but them. But prosecutors argued that no bail conditions can mitigate Combs' “risk of obstruction and dangerousness to others.” Combs has routinely flouted jail rules while locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, prosecutors said, accusing him of attempting to interfere with witnesses and taint the jury pool. “Really, this amounts to the defendant paying his way out of custody,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik told Subramanian. Defense lawyer Anthony Ricco countered that the prosecution’s portrayal of Combs as "a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions” or “an out-of-control individual who has to be detained” is inaccurate. Another Combs lawyer, Teny Geragos, added that given the strict release conditions they've proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow rules." Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with help from a network of associates and employees while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. His trial is slated to begin May 5. The college football transfer portal swung wide open Monday. With it, seven University of Massachusetts football players have put their names into the portal, looking for a new home next fall. The names that probably stick out are quarterback Ahmad Haston and running back Jalen John, both of whom went into the portal along with tight end Matt Smith, defensive linemen Tyson Walker, Zukudo Igwenagu and Aaron Beckwith, along with wide receiver Anthony Simpson. Hairston seems to be staying put in Amherst, so it remains to be seen if his recruiting efforts will bear fruit. Hitting the portal is all about recruiting, and new football head coach Joe Harasymiak broached that subject during his introductory press conference Friday morning in Amherst. The quarterback has had one of the best stretches of his career since he returned from a concussion in Week 8, keeping alive the playoff hopes for the Miami Dolphins. Tagovailoa threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns — including the winning TD in overtime — to lead Miami to the victory against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets on Sunday. With the win, the Dolphins (6-7) have the same record as Indianapolis, and they two games back of Denver (8-5) for the final AFC wild card. “I don’t think two years ago this game occurs,” coach Mike McDaniel said Sunday of Tagovailoa. “He continues to get better. ... It’s a lot of work, and all of his work is paying off because he’s a naturally gifted quarterback, not only the skill sets but people gravitate towards him. He makes people better. That’s an incredibly important part of that position.” After an up-close look at the way Tagovailoa operates Miami's offense by throwing with anticipation, Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich called him one of the fastest processors in the NFL. (AP) — The North Carolina Democratic Party sued on Friday to block the potential removal of tens of thousands of ballots tallied in an extremely close state Supreme Court race, saying state election officials would be violating federal law if they sided with protests initiated by the trailing Republican candidate. The lawsuit filed in Raleigh federal court comes as attorneys for Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin also went to state courts on Friday to attempt to force the State Board of Elections to act more quickly on accusations contained in the protests. The board tentatively planned to hold a public hearing on the protests next Wednesday, according to a board email provided with Griffin's motion. Griffin wants a final decision from the board earlier. Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs leads Griffin by 734 votes following a machine recount of over 5.5 million ballots cast in their Nov. 5 election. But Griffin, joined by three other GOP state legislative candidates, contend that well over 60,000 ballots shouldn't have counted, casting doubt on election results. The Democratic Party's lawsuit said that some of the protests represent “systematic challenges to voter eligibility” that counter a federal law's prohibition of what's essentially removing people from voter registration lists retroactively after an election. EAGLE-EYED fans are convinced that Marcus Rashford's time at Manchester United is coming to an end. The Red Devils star is facing an uncertain time at Old Trafford after a tough spell of form. Rashford, 27, struggled in Manchester United 's win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. The forward was unable to influence the game and was arguably fortunate to escape a red card in the second half. Rashford flew into a tackle when already on a yellow but avoided further punishment before being hooked by Ruben Amorim . He was not acknowledged by the manager when walking off the pitch and to the bench . Fans spotted the moment and are now convinced that it means that the club will sell him in January. One wrote: "Looks like Rashford is certainly gonna be sold, Amorim didn’t even shake his hand when he came off." A second wrote: "Amorim acknowledges Malacia and Zirkzee. However, finding a buyer could be difficult, with Rashford earning up to £325,000-per-week. His deal runs until 2028, having been signed only in July 2023. Casemiro - 6 He moved the ball forward when he could and recovered from an early blow from Onana. Bruno Fernandes - 7 He was lucky to have escaped an early yellow card. Stung the goalkeeper's gloves in the first half with a good effort. His quick thinking set up Rasmus Hojlund to fire in a late winner. Amad Diallo - 8 Diallo was a rare bright spark in Man United's attack against Plzen. It was his run that led to the equaliser, and he used his pace and skill to get past his defender. Marcus Rashford - 4 Rashford was often loose on the ball and surrendered possession in the attacking third. He received the first booking of the game for a needless foul and was lucky not to be sent off in the second half before being hooked by Ruben Amorim. More airlines are cracking down on carry-on baggage allowances and it spells bad news for travellers trying to save money.  Air Canada's recent announcement to start charging for carry-on larger than a small handpack or backpack sparked outrage around the world. And now the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in India has introduced new regulations around hand luggage allowances on both domestic and international flights. READ MORE: Air New Zealand passengers completely missed Christmas Day From next month onwards, passengers will be restricted to carrying one cabin bag or handbag only weighing up to 7kg onto the plane. The cabin bag size cannot be more than 55cm in height, 40cm in length, and 20cm in width. Airlines including IndiGo and Air India have already updated their baggage policies to align with these new guidelines, local media reported . For tickets issued prior to May 2, 2024, the maximum weight will be as per the prior cabin baggage policy. This is part of the government's efforts to facilitate passenger flow through airport terminals, reduce delays at security checkpoints, and manage the ever-increasing number of passengers. It is why these changes aren't sitting well with passengers already forking out plenty of dollars for flights. From January, Air Canada says it will start charging economy passengers to bring anything larger than a handbag or small backpack on Economy Basic fares for travel within the US, Mexico, the Caribbean and Canada. The airline will slap passengers with C$35 ($39) for their first carry-on and C$50 ($55) for a second. And if you don't plan ahead and pay for the bag when you book your flight, you'll be forced to stump up C$65 ($72). Comments on the airline's social media accused it of being "unethical" and "greedy" over the move, despite it becoming more common with airlines. WestJet – a low-cost carrier considered Air Canada's main domestic rival – already offers an "ultra-basic" fare with no carry-on bag, as does Porter Airlines, based in Toronto. US airline United has a basic economy fare that only includes a small carry-on bag (such as a "shoulder bag, backpack or laptop bag that fits under the seat in front of you"), mimicking the policy of low-cost US carriers Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant. In Europe, Finnair's lowest "superlight" fares, launched in 2023, include only a small under-seat bag – similar to the likes of Ryanair and Wizz.
